dolores.newsvine.com — Latino voters are as diverse as America. There is no easy way to get their vote, but Obama is the one facing the biggest challenge with this electorate. What can he do?

- BlankVerse, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I had high hopes when I clicked on the article, but was very disappointed with it. It's much more about Latinos in general, than about the Latino vote. It is also a very, very general article with absolutely no hard facts.
Here's the real problem for Republicans: Most Latino are either immigrants, or first or 2nd generation Americans. That means that with Republicans sponsoring anti-immigration legislation starting with California Proposition 187 in 1994, they have turned a population that is generally socially conservative and a likely recruiting ground for Republicans, into a population that votes overwhelmingly for the Democratic Party outside of the Cuban-American population in Florida. With Sen. John McCain being wishy-washy on immigration issues, he is not going to get much of the Latino vote this year--certainly not anywhere near the percentage that Bush got in 2000.
Add to that, the fact that most Latino politicians are Democrats. They are going to work very hard to get Sen. Barack Obama elected. You will see many prominent Latino politicians, such as Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor of Los Angeles, and Bill Richardson, governor of New Mexico, stumping for Obama, as well as quickly responding to any of McCain's appeals and attacks in the Spanish-language media.
The one thing that Obama needs to work on is that he hasn't generated the same level of enthusiasm that has been seen among young voters and African-American voters. Still, there is plenty of time until November to work on voter registration drives, as well as the other sorts of grassroots efforts that helped him in the Democratic primary. - mecanofan, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Too bad you didn't like the article. Glad you already know so much about Latinos and didn't get anything out of the piece.
