Barack Obama's Global Tax Proposal Up for Senate Vote
nationalledger.com — A nice-sounding bill called the "Global Poverty Act," sponsored by Democratic presidential candidate and Senator Barack Obama, is up for a Senate vote on Thursday and could result in the imposition of a global tax on the United States. The bill makes levels of U.S. foreign aid spending subservient to the dictates of the United Nations.

- lechtellhavel, on 02/15/2008, -8/+13Let's get our priorities right first. Pay off the national debt and THEN let's demonstrate our generosity to the world. At this time, probably the biggest favor we could do for the world would be to get out of Iraq—and that we CAN afford!
- theuniversal, on 02/15/2008, -11/+6"The bill makes levels of U.S. foreign aid spending subservient to the dictates of the United Nations."
That isn't true. All the goals and spending amounts are dependent - as always - on congress agreeing to them. Signing on to the UN goals means that the U.S. would agree to boost its foreign aid to 0.7% of GDP by 2015. By 2015! The article says it would add 0.7% to what the US already spends - that's false.
0.7% of GDP is not high compared to other developing countries. And by comparison, US baseline military spending is now at about 3.5% to 4% of GDP, and that doesn't include much of the current war costs. We don't live in a bubble. Aside from the humanitarian goals, extreme poverty around the world is directly linked to terrorism and US national security. Not sure why some people can't see that the US benefits from a more stable world, and spending a small amount to help reduce the world's most extreme poverty and worst diseases is a good investment. Republicans Chuck Hegel and Richard Lugar are also co-sponsors of this bill.- theuniversal, on 02/15/2008, -3/+6developED countries
- Troika37, on 02/15/2008, -1/+10I'll digg you up. I believe this is a valid argument with valid counterpoints.
I don't believe the issue is whether or not we should spend more to eradicate what you correctly identify as global problems. The issue is whether or not to cede our sovereignty to the United Nations, whether or not we should allow a foreign body to tax this government. Please realize that we're not talking about membership dues, we're talking about the UN taxing the US. - Iconoclast25, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3Our military spending should be far higher than it is now, with at least one more Marine and 6 additional active duty Army divisions, plus much larger Naval and Air Force assets. We piss away far too much on foreign aid, social programs and the like which could be reduced or totally eliminated.
- InRussetShadows, on 02/24/2008, -0/+3First, the US does not answer to what other countries spend or do not spend. They can spend 100% of their GDP on camel feces, for all I care. That is not a sufficient argument for our country to do likewise. The US military spending should be oh, let's say 50% higher, and social programs (economic redistribution) should be 50% less -- don't forget that defending the country is one of things that the Constitution mandates. It doesn't mandate foreign aid. It sure as freaking heck doesn't mandate subservience, in ANY way shape or form to the U.N cabal of tyrants!
Oh, and Lugar and Hegel are RINOs. - runderwo, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1The regime of foreign aid plunders individuals in the originating country to subsidize corrupt tyrannical regimes, and has the end result of turning people against the subsidizer.
Private humanitarianism, while morally correct, subsidizes an impoverished state of existence, encourages dependency, and encourages unsustainable reproduction.
Only free trade permanently eradicates poverty, along with tyranny, the perennial benefactor of poverty.
- Nighttime, on 02/15/2008, -1/+18The legislation would commit the U.S. to spending 0.7 percent of gross national product on foreign aid, which amounts to a phenomenal 13-year total of $845 billion over and above what the U.S. already spends.
Where will we get the money, borrow it from China?- p0s3r, on 02/15/2008, -0/+12Obama is going to raise the capital gains tax to 28.5%.
Obama is going to set the highest income tax bracket rate to 39.5%
Obama is going to raise the corporate tax rate to some ungodly number.
Obama is going to remove the Social Security tax ceiling so all earnings are subject to Social Security. A net $1T tax increase.
Thats how, on paper, he plans to pay for all his handouts and entitlements and this new Global Tax. Unfortunately, he, like most democrats do not have even the slightest understanding of economics.
He has no desire to balance the budget. All he wants to do is increase taxes, increase spending, increase the size of government, and hand over as much of our national sovereignty to the UN as possible.- Navigator7, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5Liberalism on the hoof.

Is Obama for gun control?- Troika37, on 02/15/2008, -1/+15So the UN overrides the 2nd Amendment, and Obama's ok with it? Where are his loyalties?
- Iconoclast25, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12He's a globalist first, American *maybe* second although I suspect he would define himself in other ways.
- BECoole, on 02/17/2008, -0/+10I totally agree. Obama is someone who would sell out America without a second thought.
I really don't think that in his heart of hearts he considers himself an American so much as he does a "citizen of the world".
I predict that if he is elected there will be a purge of all things patriotic.

Obama will turn the US into greater Cuba. Watch and see. - Indyanna, on 02/15/2008, -2/+17Will the OPEC countries also give .7% of their GDP to poverty-stricken countries? And what is a poverty-stricken country anyway? Who decides? Will the poor single-parent families of Mississippi (just on example) receive aid from the UN? Or will it go to poor of oil-rich Iran?
Obama is bad news, folks. Bad news. - Iconoclast25, on 02/17/2008, -0/+15NOTHING this country does should be under the dictate of the useless nabobs.
- RGWX, on 02/17/2008, -0/+15Oh come on...aren't you all willing to pay giant new taxes for HOPE? ;)

Bad stuff. NWO kind of bad. - bullcutter, on 02/17/2008, -0/+10I didn't particularly like Barack before the election, but then out of the process of elimination I was gonna vote for him, but knowing about this bill kind of makes me re-weigh things a bit.
The only reason this story's not a bigger part of the news is probably because Hilly (and everyone else?) wants the same. It looks like a noble and good deed on paper and reads well off the U.S. government statistics website, but I don't think more money would change the minds of the people who already despise us. Especially after they _do_ know the statistics and that we give more in foreign aid to Israel each year than all of Africa. - kyleain, on 02/18/2008, -1/+7God and Ron Paul!
