Bush Wrongly Credits McCain For 'Working Hard' on GI BIll
huffingtonpost.com — as Bush acknowledged the House and Senate members who came together to support the bill, he slipped in the name of one who labored to obstruct the bill -- Senator John McCain. McCain was given the same credit as those who had steered the passage of the bill from day one.

- jabberwolf, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Democratic is an adjective ! not the pronoun for the DEMOCRAT party. ( He just didn't capitalize Democrat)
He was correct and YOU are still a ***** retard!
The Democrats LOST on this and had to go through an appropriations bill that did NOT get the grants for those in part time military positions but FULL TIME military for 3 years!
Again Democrats, propaganda, and Olberman are shown to be the way of the most retarded people on earth... and apparently they post on digg!
- jabberwolf, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1Democrats had to go through an appropriation bill that gave Mccain and Bush what they wanted not what Hagel wanted. Mccain wanted this bill, but did not want the pay off for school grants to be given too early but saved for more senior soldiers to become officers. It is now after 3 years FULL SERVICE they get grants for schools.
Democrats wanted partial service. So why are Democrats claiming victory?
Plus ensured that the troops were funded through 2009!!!
- grlykool, on 07/01/2008, -7/+77Hagel and Webb fought the adminstration (and McCain) tooth and nail for this bill.

- wonderlandpr, on 07/01/2008, -6/+65What ELSE will George Bush lie about, with the OK, wink, nod of John McCain?
NOW Bush lied when he stated that he, Bush and McCain supported the GI bill. They did NOT.
Bush was against is and only signed it because he had to.
McCain was totally against it, yet Bush credited McCain as a supporter.
IF you love the truth in this Country, make sure that this LIE, a direct LIE of the President with John McCain's OK, gets out there.
Webb should speak out on this. Maybe he will when he runs with Obama as Veep. I vote for that team today and any day.- dbhalla, on 07/01/2008, -5/+3its hard to find a digg topic with the words "bush" and "right" in it

- BarbArt, on 07/01/2008, -8/+55This really pissed me off tonight because I know the history of this bill, and McCain has opposed it from the start. I was yelling at Bush on the TV and my husband told me, "Republicans lie. Write it down; remember it; put it in your wallet. Republicans lie."

If 71% of diggers disapprove of Bush then all the down-digging of conservative opinion here would be no surprise. It's more that you have to go out of your way to get into a context that not a partisan forum against Bush.
- LukasSmith, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1Actually believe it or not I am myself not fond of Bush. I think you missed the part where I was offended by the generalization of Republicans. As if Republican party is party of lies, Democratic party is not. Since the democrat party has been pretty much sleeping for the last 8 years I remind you of the Clinton years. I am offended by this typical partisan bashing.

I think I'm funny.... not. hehehahaah.
Geez. the whole "not" comedy shtick is lame.
If only you understood the truth. It has nothing to do with the democrats being wrong and the republicans being right.
BOTH parties are just two branches of a control mechanism, designed to occupy the voting masses while those who own this country do whatever they want. That is the truth. Once you realize it, that truth will really set you free.

John- superkendall, on 07/01/2008, -4/+5The only politicians who have called for a draft in recent times are Democrats. Republicans, and independents concerned that we need a strong military, realize that a draft based military is simply not as effective as a force that is full of people who willingly went into service.
- hellsing47, on 07/01/2008, -5/+4Stop posting.
- TheInformer, on 07/01/2008, -8/+4If any party is going to re-institute a draft, it's going to be the Democrat. Why? When the Republicans are in power, there isn't really any problem in getting people to sign up for the military, because they know the Republicans are pro-military. The Democrats, on the other hand, have shown themselves to be anti-military if anything, and people won't be so eager to join. The number of men and women will decrease. Draft.
A draft being instituted is a reach, but it's far more likely to happen under a President Obama than a President McCain or President Barr. - jlab, on 07/01/2008, -2/+2That's exactly what people were saying last election and it didn't happen.
- Dibou, on 07/01/2008, -5/+1This is the same Democrat fear-mongering that happens every election. The evil Republicans will DRAFT YOU! Oh no!
Then the Democrats put up a draft bill that the Republicans vote down.

- rationalbeats, on 07/01/2008, -4/+22Hey *****,
- LukasSmith, on 07/01/2008, -15/+5I think they are missing the point here. McCain was not happy with giving extra benefits to soldiers. At least not before more years went by. I imagine in the world of politics his side gave a bit and gained a bit. But I would say his ultimate gain was the Democrats passing full payment for another year of Iraq War with 0 strings attached. What I really want to know is why didn't this reach digg.com? Dare we not criticize this holy group of men and women called the Democrat Party?

“McCain needs to get on the bill,” Webb told reporters after a Christian Science Monitor breakfast meeting on Wednesday. He said legislation mirroring the post-World War II GI bill should not be considered a “political issue.” […]
Webb’s bill has 51 co-sponsors, including nine Republicans. Webb, a former secretary of the Navy, said he may have to get 60 co-sponsors to ensure Senate passage, but then added that many more Republicans could vote for the bill if McCain endorsed it.
From another article:
McCain:
The Constitution of the United States gives no authority for the Congress of the United States to set lengths of tour or lengths of duty in the military and I hope we will steadfastly reject this kind of micromanagement, which would create chaos.
This morning on CNN, Webb rebutted McCain’s assertion that the Senate has no role in troop deployments:
Well, first of all, Sen. McCain, who I’ve known for 30 years, needs to read the Constitution. There is a provision in Article I, Section 8, which clearly gives the Congress the authority to make rules with respect to the ground and naval forces. There’s precedent for this. - pintomp3, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5the bill had 58 co-sponsors, mccain wasn't one of them:

- bluesman3535, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0Yes Dennis Prager starts nearly every radio show of his with this technique. And there has been a successful linking of 'liberal' with 'the left'. So Prager just says things like 'The Left hates George Bush so much they can't see anything else on this issue' etc. I have to conclude Prager is either delusional or a propagandist due to the large and growing number of people on the RIGHT who hate GWB!
- PhilLesh69, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I'm not entirely sure what you just said, but I am a lifelong republican, who even voted for GWB in 2000.
However, at this point, I have learned that the entire two-party system is just a divide and conquer strategy. The people who own this country present us little people with a hand full of divisive issues, like immigration, abortion, gay marriage, offshore drilling or exploring ANWR, and we easily get distracted with such meaningless issues.
Meanwhile, our industrial base is shipped off to cheap-labor nations, our military is being ground to the bone, and our economic situation has evolved to a point where the richest of the rich, the top 1% control more than 50% of our wealth, and the poorest of the poor control less than 1% of the wealth.
We once had a nation that had a large middle class. We were once on the right track. Then Corporatism gained the upper hand, and now we have reverted to the same old historical vertical heirarchies, where the rich control everything, and everyone else is a wage slave to the wealthy.
I think maybe that is why McCain was so opposed to the enhanced GI Bill. He benefits when everyone else is kept from advancing economically. - bluesman3535, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0Time for some honesty! I voted G Hw Bush.....Dole was a joke so stayed home, then GWB twice. I'm a Conservative libertarian! Now can I have my 2000, and especially trusting 2004 vote back? GWB is an idiot and has proven it 100 times!~ Where is the newer wing at Yale marked 'Bush'? I cannot accept that GWB earned a legit degree, without family influence or money, from any higher institution. It's BS! Isn't it obvious? Americans should demand common sense from the highest office!

Buried. - Julik, on 07/01/2008, -11/+5McCain was for increasing benefits of the GI Bill... Don't let this garbage internet publication tell you otherwise.
The difference was that he wanted the benefits to scale with your time in service, which is how it should work. For those that don't know how it works, you basically pay $100 a month for a year ($1200 total) to sign up for it. Right now if I was using the full benefits of my GI bill I could get over $1200 a month for school. That is plenty for me to get my degree. Combine that bill with the different scholorships and grants available out there. That does not even include any financial aid benefits (depending on your income).
He did help get the wheels in motion with the bill, but when it was finalized he wanted to go a different direction with it, which I believe was the right way to go. The men and women who put in 10-12 years deserve to get more out of it than I do when I only put in 4 years.- mychaleg, on 07/02/2008, -2/+21200 a month is enough for you to get your degree huh? Please give me your life, because I'm going to COMMUNITY college and can't do it full time because the GI Bill doesn't cover my expenses enough for me not to work...and I'm by no means living a lavish life.
I don't expect it to cover all my bills, but now with my tuition covered and a monthly allowance I'll have a chance to attend full time and maybe even transition to working part time.- Julik, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1A guy I worked with for 4 years in the military is going to the University of Washington on his GI Bill... Finacial Aid and a couple scholarships that all he had to do was write an essay. That is by no means a community college.
Also there is only so much money for the GI Bill. Why should 4 years of service give someone the same amount as 12 years of service? They should give a little more to the people that stayed in longer, and the only place to get it from is the ones who got out after 4.
Also that has nothing to do with garbage publications bashing McCain for something he was in support of. - Julik, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Also I just noticed you were complaining that you cannot go to college full time because you have to work. When I was in the military I went to college full-time... Even more than full time some semesters. No one says you cannot go to college full time and work, if you want to work hard enough to get it done you can accomplish it.
You could also talk to your state reps, most states have additional benefits for veterans who return to the state they signed up in. For example, Illinois will give you 4 years of college free at a state university (undergrad degree) if you sign up in Illinois and return there when you get out of the military. In addition to that you also get your GI Benefits. So you may want to check out if your state offers anything similar.

Yet HuffPost's shills keep putting out misinformation and digg keeps eating it up. If you think that the GI bill that just passed is the same thing that McCain opposed, you should actually read the texts of the old version and the final version. Don't take my word for it, read the two versions, read the competing bill that McCain sponsored before the compromise was made, and come to your own conclusion. And bury this HuffPost crap.

- bipolarruledout, on 07/01/2008, -2/+3In other news up is down and down is up in the current white house. If this surprises you then you have been living under a rock or you suffer from a common brain disorder known as neoconservatism. Seek the help of anyone with a three digit IQ.
- jwalt1776, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0Then I shouldn't seek you, in recognition of that fact. Thank You!

- blipblipbeep, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0Lol soul. I bet they bark.
- TimDigg, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure his feet are ok
- Pedestrian101, on 07/01/2008, -9/+3Huffail forgot to mention that Obama has never led or even been a major part of any legislation. The bills that he "co-sponsered" in the Illinois State Legislature were given to him by the lead Democrat in the legislature, though he did no actual work for them. LiberFail.
- Sogui, on 07/01/2008, -8/+2Actually McCain worked with Webb to add an amendment so that the GI Bill's benefits could be transferred to the soldier's wife or children. Webb acknowledged that this was an important feature that McCain had suggested.
Of course all the idiots on Digg are parroting the Huffington Post's EARLIER articles "But, But McCain fought Webb tooth and nail on this Bill!" What they failed to realize was that McCain was very passionate about veteran's benefits and he worked hard on his own version of the bill that would enhance benefits for soldiers who stayed in service longer (and he delivered a compelling speech on this point) and allowed transferability of benefits. Ultimately McCain's stubbornness on the issue allowed for an even MORE generous GI Bill to be passed! How dare he! - CyphreDias, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Pretending to be a simpleton and a hay-seed in order to get the upper hand in a scam is a classic power maneuver. The Bush family are blue-bloods from the east coast. Bush Jr's southern accent is not real. He has been trained from birth in the art of deception. Bush takes the heat while his elite friends and family benefit. Bush offers himself as the scape-goat. Don't be stupid people. It's all staged. Wake-up. The Dems and Reps are all the same party and the Huffington post is a propaganda machine no different than faux news or any other mainstream media source.
Ron Paul would have been a good choice, although I disagree with "free trade". I see "free-trade" as slave trade, because it creates a dynamic that encourages robber-baron business practices that result in slave-wages. To compete, all other countries will need to also lower wages. Before long, we have neo-feudalism. Protectionism is good. Being vulnerable is bad. Self-sufficiency is good. Dependence is bad. Seems like common sense, but the Orwellian press has everyone's head all turned-around. - Calcularius, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1Of course, the only place we'll see this in the media is Huffington post... I dare not send any links to that site if I'm trying to persuade a misguided Republican.
This should be a front page AP article, but the "liberal media" somehow misses this stuff. - jacothedevil, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2and this is surprising why?
- ADINSX, on 07/02/2008, -3/+3I'm a democrat, and an Obama supporter, but seriously, digg (talking about digg here, not huffpost) is so incredibly biased it is ridiculous. Even well thought-out posts that have any kind conservative tone are buried to hell, while any dime-a-dozen "Impeach bush" post is dugg like it is some kind of gold. I actually digg many insightful conservative posts that I believe have been unfairly buried, just because they'd never see the light of day otherwise.
Anyway, McCain was detrimental to this bill's passing, regardless of his reasons, and therefore deserves no credit from Bush (who himself is in no position to be GIVING credit).- bluesman3535, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0Not true on the bias, I get buried all the time bashing the right,or left! Anybody can sign or log on to Digg,so get over it! Kitchen too hot for ya? I hear Pleasantville.com might be for you!~
- jwalt1776, on 07/02/2008, -5/+0"Bush can't do anything right!"
Bush says No. They say yes.Bush is winning the surge in Iraq meeting 15 of the 18 Benchmarks, that the Iraqi Government had to succeed in, are now being met by, "Leaps and Bounds!" and I bet you will only hear the Democrats saying that "We shouldn't be there in the first place!" When in fact my neighbor said at the beginning of this war that, "We gotta get rid of this nut-case!" She, said nothing about, Weapons of Mass Destruction. Now that's all I hear, "Bush Lied People Died!" 98 percent of congress voted on going to War, and saw the exact same material that, "The Bush Administration Saw!"
No Terrorist attacks in the USA since 9-11, and I've never heard a Democrat give him credit for that.
Ya, know what the Democrats have done for us, "Obstructed with the progress of the war, 3 months after they approved it!; they gave us corn based ethanol, that now has left this country in shambles, due to lack of farming of other crops, for food! And the funniest thing about that, is that it was supposed to help the environment, and it emits more carbon in the air than, gas and oil. IRONIC ISN'T IT!
Specially since, Obama has his pockets lined, with corn ethanol commodities!
Wise-Up Democrats, you have to be in successive (month-wise) negative growth and we are still having positive growth, so stop bending the truth that, we are in a recession. We haven't been and will not be in one, unless, Taxbama wins the Presidency and crashes the stock market. Then see how many poor there are in this country - Hillsfar, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1It's the same as when Bush and Cheney linked Iraq with Al Qaeda. Enough Americans believed. In this same manner, Bush sows his seeds of lies into gullible American minds, cementing McCain as fighter for the GI Bill.
- bynddrvn, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Agree, the main stream media just spewed out whatever crap Dubya & Co said about Iraq. Amazing, the truth is that Osama bin Laden HATED Iraq and Saddam Hussein, he called them "socialist infidels" in an interview! Osama only started supporting Iraq when it became a choice of supporting the US or Iraq. The dems should grow some balls like Kucinich and impeach these bastards!
- jerrycurley, on 07/02/2008, -1/+0You know what is kind of funny? How the Obama spammers still claim to not be spamming, yet they take an articlethat has absolutely NOTHING to do with Obama, and they use his picture for the submission.
- LBTS, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1You know what else is kind of funny, besides your blatantly racist digg name? Obama supported Veterans by promoting the passage of the G I Bill, while John McCain worked tirelessly in opposing Veterans on this bill.
Perhaps the OP, in using Obama's picture, was merely pointing out that Obama is the one Bush should have been correctly crediting for helping pass a bill that aids our Veterans.- jerrycurley, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0What the *****? Racist digg name?
And don't embarrass yourself even more. It has been thoroughly proven that there is a coordinated effort to spam digg with any and every Obama story.
(It will not get one even ONE additional vote come November, by the way.) - LBTS, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Yes, racist digg name. You think people are stupid. How ironic.
The Jheri curl (often incorrectly spelled Jerry curl - the source for jerry rig - and/or Jeri Curl) is a hairstyle that was common and popular in the African American community in the late 1970s and throughout the '80s. wikipedia.

- bynddrvn, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1We need to spend the 4th of July weekend and anytime we get writing letters to the main stream media. They need to cover issues like this. Somehow they have managed to mention just about ever absurd rumor about Mr. Obama but they give McCain a free pass for making misstatements, flip flopping on issues, and outright lying. This needs to stop, they are not helping our democratic process, and they are hurting us by not reporting on the issues that will have a direct impact on our lives.
