Democrat Travis Childers Beats Republican in Mississippi
paullevinson.blogspot.com — Fordham Prof. Paul Levinson: "The most significant election result tonight was not Hillary Clinton's big win over Barack Obama in West Virginia, but Democrat Travis Childers' win in the northern Mississippi. Why is Childers' victory so important? ... Childers was stridently opposed by Republicans who sought to link him to Barack Obama."

- supercynic, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4This is great news; not so much b/c a Democrat was elected, but because a Republican was not elected here in the belt buckle of the Bible Belt. The Karl Rovian politics that have dominated this state since Haley Barbour's ascension to the governorship may finally be waking people up to just how counterproductive their policies are. Put simply, perhaps the pendulum may start swinging back toward the middle now that people have seen just how ugly and unproductive the far right is.
- azpat, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6That's twice now that the "Link someone to Obama" plan backfired on the GOP! Supers need to realize that an Obama ticket will mean lots of good things for other Democrats running in other elections.
- michael532111, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2I agree. A very significant element of this particular election is not only that a Democrat won a Republican seat in Mississippi, but that he did so by being directly and very visibly linked to Obama. Republicans thought such a link would sink Childers' chance of winning, but the exact opposite happened. You can be sure the Democratic superdelegates, many of whom will be up for re-election this year, are taking notice of Obama's coattails this early in the game.
