Giuliani over his head in campaign debts
rawstory.com — “We are deeper in the hole than I thought we would be, ” John Gross, the campaign’s treasurer, wrote in an e-mail message obtained by the Times. “We cannot prefer any one creditor. We probably could make a 10% payment to all creditors but not much more.'

- cashman57, on 02/14/2008, -4/+71Gee now he will need to be bailed out. So sad. I guess that's what happens when you believe what the media tells you about being a frontrunner and a viable candidate.
Did the gun grabbing New York lawyer really think all that crap was true?- stonedslacker, on 02/14/2008, -1/+26Maybe they should try to organize a Giuliani money bomb - $9.11 from each supporter.
- willfe, on 02/14/2008, -1/+5Nuts to that. He's not even worth $0.0911 to me.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2$9.11 for each supporter will get him around $911, if even that. He was way behind RP in almost every primary and caucus. People seriously don't like this *****.
- midbc, on 02/14/2008, -0/+9don't worry the American tax payers will end up flipping the bill for it some way
- Chupacabra82, on 02/14/2008, -0/+11Well, I don't think he's worried. Now 9/11--there were times when he was worried.
- Frnnkdlxx, on 02/14/2008, -3/+1Maybe he can get a loan from the Ron Paul Campaign.... Aww hell, for his pathetic run, I feel like chipping in $9.11. And a defibrillator to protect against asbestos, just to keep him on his toes. The rat bastard.
- MacEnvy, on 02/14/2008, -2/+6How does a defibrillator (electric current) protect against asbestos (airborne carcinogen)?
- alittleroy101, on 02/14/2008, -2/+1It doesn't.

- rmxz, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4I don't think he believed it for a second. He just saw it as an opportunity to deepen his connections with deep-pocketed corporations that he can use in his ongoing consulting business work.

- stonedslacker, on 02/14/2008, -1/+26Maybe they should try to organize a Giuliani money bomb - $9.11 from each supporter.
- magoghm, on 02/14/2008, -6/+85Two comments about this:
1. Where did he believe he was going to get the money to pay back that debt if he had gotten better results in Florida. From more donations? Or, once he was President, stealing tax payers money to pay back that debt?
2. I do not have any numbers, but my intuition tells me that John McCain might very soon find himself in a very similar situation.- chrisbarr, on 02/14/2008, -3/+18As for number 2, I really really hope so. He's just a Crazy old man with an "R" by his name that represents nothing.

- nospinhere, on 02/14/2008, -10/+6Other then hoping that McCain might find himself in a similar situation, what makes you think that he actually will be? As the Republican front runner, he won't have any problem raising funds in the future. Thanks for the heads up that you were actually going to make two comments.
- brufleth, on 02/14/2008, -2/+5I love the people who seem to get their political news from Rush and completely ignore that most voting republicans are supporting McCain. He really doesn't need to go too nuts with campaign spending until the general election because he has the party nomination all but wrapped up. So he can save lots of his pennies and then have a spending surge in the last few months before the election to boost his image. Unlike Obama and Clinton who have to keep spending like mad right now.
Rudy was just in way over his head. The guy was a mayor of a city which half the country views with contempt. What kind of credentials are "I happened to be holding office during 9/11?" The guy lacked any substance and with various groups like the fire fighters speaking out against him he lacked any credibility in the public eye.- magoghm, on 02/14/2008, -1/+8"The guy lacked any substance and with various groups like the fire fighters speaking out against him he lacked any credibility in the public eye." I guess you can say exactly the same things about McCain, just replace firefighters with Vietnam veterans.
- brufleth, on 02/14/2008, -2/+2What?
He spent five years as a POW. His father was an admiral at the time and when his captors figured this out they offered to release him. McCain instead stuck to the "first in, first out" rule and refused to be released unless they released everyone else they had captured before him. Mind you he had several ribs broken, a broken shoulder, and was stabbed. They brutally beat him until he signed a confession which he purposefully used disjointed language in to show he was being forced to write it. He then refused to sign another confession despite further torture.
After all that he still didn't leave the military and after coming back from Vietnam continued to serve. He probably only left because his attitude and injuries would almost certainly have kept him from living up to his father and grand father (both four star admirals).
Maybe I missed something but from what I've read he had a pretty rough stay in Vietnam. He had to go through intense physical therapy just to get his legs to bend again and he still can't raise his arms over his head.- magoghm, on 02/14/2008, -1/+4I wasn't in Vietnam, so I can't say what the facts are. But I do know that there's seems to be rather large group of Vietnam veterans who are against McCain because they claim he's more a traitor than a hero.
- thall, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2I hear conflicting reports about what McCain really went through as a POW
- brufleth, on 02/14/2008, -2/+2What?
- GARussell, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2"The guy was a mayor of a city which half the country views with contempt." I agree, A big problem with the US media is that they are out of New York, and think that everyone thinks the world of them. It was just a few months ago that the media were telling us that Rudy and Hillary would be the two candidates, with Bloomberg probably joining in to give America the choice of three New Yorkers. Now that the American people are voting, we find out that that is not what they want.
- magoghm, on 02/14/2008, -1/+8"The guy lacked any substance and with various groups like the fire fighters speaking out against him he lacked any credibility in the public eye." I guess you can say exactly the same things about McCain, just replace firefighters with Vietnam veterans.
- rmxz, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3For #1. Of course he didn't believe he was going to get money to pay back the debt. If he cared much whether or not debt holders aren't reimbursed, he probably wouldn't have gone that far in debt.
- Tweekster, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1campaigns never care about stiffing creditors. ALL Campaigns work that way.

- dasunst3r, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2Yeah, because after 9/11, it is important that we make sure we get as much money out of the terrorists as possible. /sarcasm
- gypsi, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4why do y'all hate freedom?
- needsmorecoffee, on 02/14/2008, -1/+59And largely because Rudy apparently likes to travel in high style. Politicians are just ridiculous at this point.

I bet they don't pay the full 10%. Maybe about 9.11%.
_- cashman57, on 02/14/2008, -4/+7LMAO!
I bet you are right!! - PeppermintPig, on 02/14/2008, -0/+11Anybody who earned their way to that kind of money would have the know-how and desire to pay that debt off.

- manicmarvin, on 02/14/2008, -5/+41Thank God that ***** didn't get his hands on the U.S. budget, but I'm sure Obama/McCain will go on an insane spending spree too.
- DeviantDragon, on 02/14/2008, -3/+20Ironically enough only Guiliani's and Paul's plans for government spending resulted in a decrease in spending. Paul's by a much more significant amount of course.
- Akronos, on 02/14/2008, -1/+19That would be assuming Guiliani actually did what he said he would.
- keepinithamsta, on 02/14/2008, -1/+12Of course Ron Paul would reduce spending, he wants to get rid of anything that spends more than a couple thousands dollars.
- JigoroKano, on 02/14/2008, -1/+6Domestically Guiliani might have wanted to, but defense spending wouldn't have gone down and that is our biggest problem right now. Even Paul has said we could actually afford some of these social programs if we would just pull back our military forces and keep them strictly for defense.
- brheath, on 02/14/2008, -2/+3The difference is that Obama CAN AFFORD an insane spending spree.
- andshewas, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2That doesn't make it right.

Spend, spend, spend. And only be able to afford 10% of your bills.
The party of fiscal responsibility shows it's true colors again.- teadrinker, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4There is no such thing as a party of fiscal responsibility any more. This is why there is talk of Republicans splitting into fiscal conservatives and Christian evangelicals (social conservatives)
- Cleaner44, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2That's a fact. Rudy is a moron and would drive the Unites States even deeper into debt.
- GuacamoleSan, on 02/14/2008, -0/+46Let's see 9/11 get you out of this one
- TheNeptune, on 02/14/2008, -0/+8Don't give him any ideas, he made quite a bit of money off 9/11, a repeat wouldn't be good for freedom loving Americans.
- lasenorita, on 02/14/2008, -0/+11Giuliani collected $11.4 million dollars in one year by talking about his experiences on 9/11. I'm sure he'll find a way...
- insomniac8400, on 02/14/2008, -1/+67Maybe Ron Paul will give him a loan.
- jmpeagle, on 02/14/2008, -0/+28do you think he would make such an unwise financial decision?
- bjornski, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1NEVER lend Republicans money.
It won't be paid back, and they'll constantly be dickering on now "their burden" is too high, and that everyone around them would be so much better off if you reduced their payments.
- bjornski, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1NEVER lend Republicans money.
- DiggLive, on 02/14/2008, -16/+4You mean actually doing something with the money he has? No way!
- bjornski, on 02/14/2008, -6/+7Yes.
What IS Ron going to do with all that money?
He can't keep it. And it'd be stupid to buy more blimps......- Brad324, on 02/14/2008, -2/+12I say he builds an airship and travels around the world - it's the only way to save the world! I've learned this from every RPG I've ever played.
- dagnome1984, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2Reminds me of Dragon Quest 4
- darion, on 02/14/2008, -1/+9Dr Paul never bought any blimps. That was private people with their own agenda. I dont even know what hes bought with it? Maybe he wants to spend it but looks at the price and said wtf thats too high I wont buy that.
- bjornski, on 02/14/2008, -1/+3I'm being dugg down, but NOBODY is answering the question on what Ron Paul will do with all of that money that he raised. You guys gave him MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars, and he's spent very little of it.
He can't keep it. What is he going to do? - redstorm986, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1He's most likely going to save it as a preconvention push if McCain doesn't make the required number of delegates. Hopefully he can get delegates to change their minds or something. I don't exactly know how that process works.
- GuacamoleSan, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2BLIMPS! We need more Blimps! Its the only answer! Thousands of them!..no wait...Millions of them!
- bjornski, on 02/14/2008, -6/+7Yes.
- Bamont, on 02/14/2008, -1/+1I'm sure Paul can afford it. I wonder, after he loses the nomination - will he return the money?
- jmpeagle, on 02/14/2008, -0/+28do you think he would make such an unwise financial decision?
- insllvn, on 02/14/2008, -0/+28It couldn't happen to a nicer *****, and i mean that.
- Berkana, on 02/14/2008, -2/+23Good! Maybe now 9iu11ani and his supporters can sympathize with the nation, which is in debt from borrowing huge sums of money to fight an unwinnable war. If only Bush and Cheney were in this situation. . .
- MewTwo, on 02/14/2008, -2/+12This reminds me of that dreadful day of September 11th... we felt over our heads, we were confused, we still do...

- PeppermintPig, on 02/14/2008, -0/+8We don't know if he's learned anything yet. Learning about debt requires one to suffer the consequences and pick up the pieces.
- bjornski, on 02/14/2008, -0/+6He hasn't learned *****. It wasn't HIS money he was spending.
It was borrowed and donated money.

- Qtip42, on 02/14/2008, -2/+33It's only sweet because he laughed at Ron Paul at so many of those debates...who's in debt and out of the race now? At least paul got a few delegates and started a movement.
- ajwinder, on 02/14/2008, -16/+3Oh please, maybe an internet movement, but you can't honestly think the Paul campaign did one bit of lasting good...
- dagnome1984, on 02/14/2008, -0/+7He has 37 republican representatives, Ron Paul supporters, running for office on his platform. http://www.ronpaulforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23 ...

- lazyfisherman, on 02/14/2008, -1/+10Eh, it's weird.. I've seen people, Bush supporters, listen to Ron Paul speaking only once and be converted. He touched people in ways I didn't think he would. Some of these people voted for Ron Paul even after they knew he wasn't a viable candidate anymore. His candidacy changed minds and did some lasting good.
- darion, on 02/14/2008, -2/+2Hes still running for 2008. He only suspended his march to the white house due to other problems he has to deal with first. Its still a long way off from voting so hes got time.
- brufleth, on 02/14/2008, -2/+2He won't get the nomination and if he's even on the ballot it would have to be as a third party.

- brufleth, on 02/14/2008, -5/+2I understand the idealist attitude that he "started a movement" but he's hardly the first "different" candidate that has run. Please take a look at Nader in the 2000 election or hell, even Ross Perot. Paul is just another in a line of idealist candidates.
The biggest difference I can see with Paul is that his ideas would largely not work at all. Getting rid of most government departments and regulations would just turn the US into a purely corporate controlled clone of China. We'd be back to the 80 hour work week, no health insurance at all, and the destruction of the middle class.- dylio, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1The only reason your speculations fall short about Paul's platform is that your own crystal ball is foggy, so stop trying to see into the future.
He proposed changes that he would have like to implemented, but don't fool yourself he would get rid of your precious safety net in one day. Thats as absurd as this illegal occupation in Iraq.

- brufleth, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2Which does what? Makes some coin for airlines because people are flying to Washington?
A guy I work with attended an anti war protest in Washington. He had to take days off from work and fly down. He said there were easily tens of thousands of people there. People who had served as well as family of people who have died. There were speeches and he said it was really quite amazing.
There was virtually zero media coverage of it. Almost nobody heard about it. The media is more interested in sport starts possibly taking steroids than politicians being fiscally irresponsible. I hate to be so pesimistic but it really doesn't seem like protests achieve much politically unless you can get mass media coverage. You'd have to have a 200,000 person hunger strike to get anyone's attention these days.

- kanundro, on 02/14/2008, -1/+14Guiliani got put back in his place. See this is one of many reasons why New Yorkers dislike him with a passion. Even his supposed "leadership" of 9/11 couldn't save him from his own douchebaggery. And yes agreed he had this coming to him...ironically he laughed at other candidates (mainly Ron Paul) but yet... RP is still in the race and still has a lot of funds and Guiliani? Yea.

- Deliguy, on 02/14/2008, -0/+12This quote right here scares the crap out of me thinking about how closely we came in this country to have these types of creeps running the spine of our country through clenched teeth.
"The biggest chunk of those flights came via Elliott Asset Management, a New York hedge fund known by some as a "vulture fund," so-named because they buy debt cheaply from cash-starved countries, and then sue them for the full repayment. The head of the firm, Paul Singer, is in charge of Northeastern fundraising for Giuliani."

- Rioracer916, on 02/14/2008, -0/+9Sometimes in an ownership society you get PWNed...enjoy your debt. It's karma for using a national tragedy to further your career, while the real heroes are slowly dying of respiratory illnesses.
- OgniAsuob, on 02/14/2008, -0/+6That's the best news of the day. What a wanker.. If you'd lend ***** of money as a "normal person" and then offer to repay 10% you would spend a serious amount of time folding towels and having sex with your mates. In prison.
Bring back the Guillotine!!! ..sorry, the Giulianotine. - ka2err, on 02/14/2008, -0/+9That would leave roughly 9/11 of his creditors unsatisfied...
- jm4847, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4Now that's justice.
Also could someone please screen cap this when it gets 911 diggs? - ch1gz, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4screw Giuliani, I wanna know more about this Elliott Asset Management.
"they buy debt cheaply from cash-starved countries, and then sue them for the full repayment" wtf? - kurtwinter, on 02/14/2008, -0/+5If Guiliani read my comments over the past year, he would've known he didn't have a chance in hell in winning.
9/11 - ladalang, on 02/14/2008, -0/+6Why doesn't he take the billions he made off the fallen victims of 9/11 and pay off his debt. Piece of *****. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy
- Tweekster, on 02/14/2008, -2/+0since when he did he make billions
are you retarded?
- Tweekster, on 02/14/2008, -2/+0since when he did he make billions
- yellowcakewalk, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4Well, I'd love to help out Rudy the Ghoul, but it just wouldn't be right. Helping people is what socialists do. Wouldn't want to be labeled socialist. No sir.
- JoePython, on 02/14/2008, -2/+1I dislike Giuliani as much as anyone, but I couldn't let this one go by.
Helping people is not what socialists do. Socialists vote to take money away from other people in order to "help" people.
Helping people out of one's own pocket is what conservatives do - check the rankings of charitable donations by state (per capita). None of the "blue" states are even in the top 20.
- JoePython, on 02/14/2008, -2/+1I dislike Giuliani as much as anyone, but I couldn't let this one go by.
- vermax, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3oh i am loving every minute of his fall to shame. and i can't really feel much pity for anyone stupid enough to extend this Weasel credit, what did you think this bastard would do? man the US dodged a massive bullet, this guy would have been the end of us.
- radix2, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4Republican==fiscal responsibility? Actually that is not fair to the real/traditional Republicans, as the ticket he was running on places that credo up pretty high. Thank [your random god] he dropped out before he had a chance to really screw with fiscal policy.
The question remains, how did he let the campaign get so much in debt? - BuzzFriendly, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3I guess "conservative" only applies to his social policies and not his fiscal spending. Maybe he will apply his refund from the government to help pay the bills. And to think some fools were going to vote this guy in the manage the US economy.
- reuscel, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Well, this certainly made my morning.
- kap79, on 02/14/2008, -0/+0America's Mayor ladies and gents!
