Greg Mitchell: A 'Terrible' Debate Performance
huffingtonpost.com — We've come to lower our expectations for real debates in the "debate" process, but this one was terrible. Who picked the questions from the six million sent in online plus the dozens from the people in the hall? The transcript for the last half hour could have been typed up in advance.

- Soughtout, on 10/08/2008, -1/+7From the article: "Brokaw kept complaining that the candidates were not staying within their time limits--and then did nothing to stop them beyond pleading with them to, maybe, keep an eye on the flashing lights, pretty please, huh?
And his "follow up" questions were weak." - HartgE46, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4I really used to like and respect this man, now he's in company with Charles Gibson.
- LOVE10, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3Tom was horrible! He should have let the candidates give their complete answers. Isn't that the point of the debates?
- KyleRayner, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1Complete answers? Is my sarcasm meter broken? Their "answers" were stump speeches that usually had nothing to do with the question at hand.
- col381, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3The major problem was that since both candidates insisted on going over the time allocated for the initial comments, there was never any time left at the end for any back-forth debating. In the end it was very unsatisfying - basically tag team canned speech making from both of them.
That said, it was clearly Obama's night - McCain looked figgity, pasty and not at all well. I think he needs a rest. - rootsm3, on 10/08/2008, -1/+2Ok I know this really irrelevant to the whole issue, but was I the only one who noticed that one woman in the audience in section F with the crazy eyes? She was ridiculous.
But back on topic, the whole thing was a disaster. I heard the same talking points over and over again. Tom was irritating and unprofessional. The questions weren't what I was expecting. That being said, Obama had grace where McCain was devoid of any sort of charisma or personality. He looked like a grumpy old man. - Michael9636, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1The biggest looser in this "debate" was Tom Brokaw. His questions were inane. He appeared on the verge of stumbling several times. After the candidates' initial response, there was supposed to be a short back-and-forth debate. Instead, Brokaw inserted himself with weak questions not related to the subject just discussed. And finally, was it just me or did anyone else detect a strong pro-McCain bias both in Brokaw's demeanor and questioning? It's sad to see a once great reporter diminish himself. Brokaw should go back in retirement and stay there.
