Huckabee Falsely Claiming To Have Theology Degree
cbn.com — The bright lights just keep getting brighter for Mike Huckabee. Now he's being asked about something he told us here at CBN last month. Political producer Robin Mazyck asked him a question about fighting the war on terror and here was his answer: "I'm as strong on terror as anybody. In fact I think I'm stronger than most people because I truly...

If you replace "theology degree" with "religion degree", does it dilute his point? He has a religion degree and 75% of a theology degree.
If you don't like the guy, there's plenty of other (perfectly valid) stuff to criticize him about. He's a fundamentalist wackjob and half of his supporters would faint if they knew what the "fair tax" actually was. Let's run with that. - cashman57, on 12/16/2007, -6/+5http://www.ronpaul2008.com/about/
Congressman Ron Paul is the leading advocate for freedom in our nation’s capital. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dr. Paul tirelessly works for limited constitutional government, low taxes, free markets, and a return to sound monetary policies. He is known among his congressional colleagues and his constituents for his consistent voting record. Dr. Paul never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution. In the words of former Treasury Secretary William Simon, Dr. Paul is the “one exception to the Gang of 535” on Capitol Hill.
Ron Paul was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Gettysburg College and the Duke University School of Medicine, before proudly serving as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the 1960s. He and his wife Carol moved to Texas in 1968, where he began his medical practice in Brazoria County. As a specialist in obstetrics/gynecology, Dr. Paul has delivered more than 4,000 babies. He and Carol, who reside in Lake Jackson, Texas, are the proud parents of five children and have 17 grandchildren.
While serving in Congress during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dr. Paul’s limited-government ideals were not popular in Washington. In 1976, he was one of only four Republican congressmen to endorse Ronald Reagan for president.
During that time, Congressman Paul served on the House Banking committee, where he was a strong advocate for sound monetary policy and an outspoken critic of the Federal Reserve’s inflationary measures. He was an unwavering advocate of pro-life and pro-family values. Dr. Paul consistently voted to lower or abolish federal taxes, spending and regulation, and used his House seat to actively promote the return of government to its proper constitutional levels. In 1984, he voluntarily relinquished his House seat and returned to his medical practice.
Dr. Paul returned to Congress in 1997 to represent the 14th congressional district of Texas. He presently serves on the House Committee on Financial Services and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. He continues to advocate a dramatic reduction in the size of the federal government and a return to constitutional principles.
Congressman Paul’s consistent voting record prompted one of his congressional colleagues to say, “Ron Paul personifies the Founding Fathers’ ideal of the citizen-statesman. He makes it clear that his principles will never be compromised, and they never are.” Another colleague observed, “There are few people in public life who, through thick and thin, rain or shine, stick to their principles. Ron Paul is one of those few.”
He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.
He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.
Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress.

(http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/VIDEO_FLASHBACK_ ... ) I mean, seriously, do you want a liar like that who is boldly and brazenly confident that God is on his side as president? - gadgetlust, on 12/16/2007, -1/+11Earn an honorary one or earn a real one?
I have an M.Div. It took 4 years to get my undergrad degree, then the equivalent of 4 more to do my masters. I'm not saying that everything we studied seemed relevant to life in the real world, but the academic study of theology can be fascinating stuff when you begin to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes. People have tried to get away with all kinds of ***** in the name of God throughout history -- and unfortunately, some things have yet to change...
Shrug. - Lapsarian, on 12/16/2007, -2/+3Thank you, you said what I was going to but without the swear words. I'm in my first year of a M. Th and it is fascinating and difficult and yes, academic. People who mock higher education in religion have no idea what they're talking about and drive me up the wall. It's cool to hate religion these days, and anyone studying it must be a sucker for that kind of 'fairytale.' At least someone else gets it.

- blowtorch324, on 12/16/2007, -3/+4You're very correct Tyger, although you won't get that trough the anti-Christians on Digg. I think technically his degree was in Religion, but people like to argue semantics. Perhaps he mispoke, but I don't believe he was trying to misrepresent his credentials.
- Nanellen, on 12/16/2007, -1/+3You're right. He completed his BA at Ouachita (pronounced Wachita) and completed 46 credits towards his Masters degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. It takes 91 credits for a Master of Divinity degree there or 50 credits for a Master of Theology degree. Don't know if that has changed since 1981. But he served as a Baptist minister for about 15 plus years.

- Jitgos, on 12/16/2007, -4/+4There are too many real stories about how awful a president he would be to focus on this little matter. I even submitted one, but there's no reason to nit pick at every word and fault. Honestly we all know most of us have a tendency to slightly exaggerate ourselves from time to time. The only merit I can give this story is that I guess it could be looked at as part of a pattern of deceit.
- WilliamDavis, on 12/16/2007, -3/+1Agreed. If he told me in a conversation that he had a theology degree and then I found this out, I wouldn't even consider it a lie.
I think the real news here is that CBN is making an issue out of it. I always kinda took them at face value, and just believed they were wrong a lot. When CBN is bashing Huckabee, it makes me wonder what their real agenda is.

- zefferin, on 12/16/2007, -9/+4For the record:
He graduated magna cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University, completing his bachelors degree in 2½ years before attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He has two honorary doctoral degrees: a Doctor of Humane Letters, received from John Brown University in 1991, and a Doctor of Laws from Ouachita Baptist University in 1992.
I wonder if the original poster bothered to check the facts before cutting and pasting this from the Drudge Report? - vhold, on 12/16/2007, -2/+3The bottom line here is that your credentials are really secondary to your ability to be president.
It's the quality and honesty of your ideas that is truly important. Sure, you can be a quadruple PH.D. and mathematically the best president possible, but will you actually follow through on any of your promises? My personal experience is that no president in the last 30 years has held true to their promises, and I'm sure that's been the case for longer then I've been alive. The traditional criteria for judging presidential candidates is a joke.- NSResponder, on 12/16/2007, -3/+2A theology degree isn't a credential. As scary as it was to have Bush drape the bible around his administration, it will be even scarier when the next papal president gets elected. Bush just claims to be acting on behalf of God to garner support. The next guy is probably going to actually believe that he is acting on behalf of god. That's really scary.
- NSResponder, on 12/16/2007, -5/+2Umm... So, the guy lies about having a degree that means nothing anyway?
I'd put that rather far down on the list of reasons not to vote for him.
-jcr - cashman57, on 12/16/2007, -3/+4A huckster presidency would be a disater. He will continue the Bush policies in line with the CFR.
If you want a president who is beholden to the CFR you have many choices.
If you want a candiidate who will not attack other countries and can restore the Constitution you have one choice.- onanobj, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Only one? Kucinich?
- ChristPissed, on 12/16/2007, -4/+7Mike HucksterHasBeen is your typical christain, a liar and a fascist and a traitor to the Constitution.
- blowtorch324, on 12/16/2007, -2/+2Your name and comments are sickening. Shame on you.
- neopolaris, on 12/16/2007, -3/+3YOU don't know what a real Christian is, so stow it Gilligan.
- flashback99, on 12/16/2007, -4/+5You guy's all keep relying on 'science' and 'rationality' which is limited. If you BELIEVE you have a Theology degree - you have it. Because science can't touch what you BELIEVE.
peace out.- mindovermat, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1word.
- Dennis88, on 12/16/2007, -7/+0I have a Theology degree. From Cambridge. Eat my *****.
- gcopenhaver, on 12/16/2007, -0/+9I'm surprised no one thought about the fact that Pat Robertson, the guy that endorsed Rudy Giuliani, is the man that founded the CBN. This was at least an informative article, however. Let all the other guys tear each other down, while Ron Paul gets more and more attention and support. No one has found any real dirt on Ron Paul yet, and it's very doubtful they will. Donate to Ron Paul's campaign today! Have fun at your tea parties today! http://www.teaparty07.com - http://www.ronpaul2008.com/donate
- HalfGiraffe, on 12/16/2007, -3/+6Buried as inaccurate. Here's what he said: I have a bachelor of arts in religion and a minor in communications in my undergraduate work. And then I have 46 hours on a master's degree at Southwestern Theology Seminary. So, my degree as a theological degree is at the college level and then 46 hours toward a masters -- three years of study of New Testament Greek, and then the rest of it, all in Seminary was theological studies, but my degree was actually in religion." Seems reasonable to say he has a theology degree. Arguing otherwise would be splitting a very fine hair.
- blowtorch324, on 12/16/2007, -1/+1Thanks for reading the article --- most of the other people on here don't bother and jump to conclusions.
- deadbob, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Normally people with "theology degrees" mean masters or higher. say http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Divinity, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Theology, or at least a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Divinity. A BA in religion is a very aggressive interpretation of a "theology degree". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divinity_(academic_di ... might help with all the TLA that come after most Priests/Pastors
- marknight, on 12/17/2007, -0/+0Thank you. It doesn't look like many people actually read the article. He may have overstated his degree, but it's still a degree in religion with additional work in theology, which was the point of what Huckabee was saying. That he had one and other candidates didn't. Huckabee had better start realizing how fickle and hair splitting national politics is if he wants to go much further.
- ElwoodHerring, on 12/16/2007, -4/+4So now you need a theology degree to be considered as U.S. presidential material?
Oh dear, oh dear oh dear. There goes the U.S. of A. - a country with a great future behind it... - an0nymous, on 12/16/2007, -1/+2He lied about a matter of public record.
Anyone really want this dim-bulb to be president?- Nanellen, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1He did not "lie". His degree is in RELIGION.
- KJSatz, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3Oh no his degree's actually in RELIGION, but he said it was in THEOLOGY! ***** a blimp!
- Lapsarian, on 12/16/2007, -0/+0The difference is considerable and, in the context of his comment, worth noting. A BA in religion can cover ALL aspects of ALL religions - my last year in college I took Biblical Hebrew, Old Testament Short Story, Asian Mysticism, and Islam. A M. Th, especially one that involved three semester of NT Greek (which is a BITCH to learn), is focused on Christian theology specifically. At college now, even the courses I take on the Hebrew Bible come with a Christian slant, because that's the main focus of this college (which is also a seminary.) Huckabee was talking about the theocratic nature of the war "with Islamofascism," and in that kind of discussion, a theology degree wouldn't be as useful as a Bachelor's in religion, assuming he did Islam in undergrad.
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1***** a blimp? IDK if you made that up, but that phrase now holds a special place in my vocabulary.
- bunkybrewman, on 12/16/2007, -1/+0ALL politicians lie. Why should Huck be any different?
- Nanellen, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1His degree is in RELIGION. Why is that different than a degree in THEOLOGY and why do you care?
- andergriff, on 12/16/2007, -1/+1 For those who like the Nanny State, but prefer that it be served up in the
cadence of a preacher, then I'd suggest Mike Huckabee, a former Arkansas
governor and a Baptist minister. Writes National Review's Jonah Goldberg:
"Huckabee is a populist on economics, a fad-follower on the environment and
an all-around do-gooder who believes that the biblical obligation to do
'good works' extends to using government - and your tax dollars - to bring
us closer to the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth."
:-))))) - weside, on 12/16/2007, -3/+3All these dumpster-digging stories about him that have been on Digg have only put him more in the public eye, as he is now neck and neck with Rudy, who's barely Republican as it is, with Dem values. Your smear stories simply bring attention to him amongst those that might not know him, who then go on to learn about his values and platform, and thusly throw their support behind him.
Huckabee in '08.
Keep the stories coming, you idiotic liberal, athiest, pro-drug, pro-baby killing, Digg Nation. You're only helping his cause :) - Delphium226, on 12/16/2007, -1/+1Thats all we need, more ***** Christian Taleban polluting our government. Not much different from Iran.
- JoeVet, on 12/16/2007, -3/+4This makes you anti-Hucksters look really foolish. He has a BS in religion. The study of religion is theology. Therefore he has a theology degree. Nobody really has to lie to discredit this Bozo do they? Just look up his statements. This article should have been more about him calling this a religious crusade and that he wants to lead that crusade. The truth is much more condemning then the made-up crap about his degree.
