If He Can Attack Obama, Why Can't He Debate Obama? watch!
huffingtonpost.com — Apparently, even though John McCain doesn't want to debate Barack Obama, he doesn't have any problem attacking him -- even after suspending his presidential campaign.

- busterpratt, on 09/25/2008, -14/+249If you voted for Bush last election. You should be put in a 8 year election timeout box.
- cg4et, on 09/26/2008, -1/+45That wouldn't be a good idea. I am just one of many former Bush voters who will be voting for Obama this year.
I have yet to meet a Kerry voter who is planning to vote for McCain.- septicmadman, on 09/26/2008, -16/+6Given that logic and assuming you wanted Obama to win, then not allowing those who voted for Bush last election cycle would guarantee Obama's victory.
- roxgod666, on 09/26/2008, -2/+22Why did you vote for him in the first place?
- JLSN, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5Thank you. It is way refreshing to see someone take a real look at the choices.
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 09/26/2008, -3/+8I'm in the same boat you're in, cg4et.
busterpratt seems like a guy that would want to make it a law to throw you in jail if you don't agree with him. - busterpratt, on 09/26/2008, -2/+9I didn't say I would require it by law. I'm just suggesting that those who did need to have a little time to think.
- akchrs, on 09/26/2008, -6/+5My vote for McCain will cancel out your vote for Obama. Why bother even showing up.
- mmcxiiad, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3i guess so your vote for mccain actually does get canceled out instead of counting.
Although the truth is, unless you live in the same state that isn't really true. Presidents get elected based on the Electoral College... not the popular vote. - PhoenixAvatar2, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5@roxgod: Fear mostly. I'm the same as cg4et, I wasn't old enough to vote in 04 but I would have voted Bush if I could have. 9/11 happened in the second week of my high school freshman year, I watched Powell present his evidence to the UN about mobile chemical weapons labs on train cars on the tv during my world history class. Now that I'm older, I've gotten over the fear and know that thanks to Bush's lies, we're pretty well *****. Hindsight's 20/20 but what good is it if you don't use it.
- xtmno3, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5@roxgod666:
(I am not OP, but I voted for Bush as well)
I openly admit I made a mistake and voted for Bush in '04. My reasoning was twofold:
First, I honestly didn't like Kerry, he seemed too fake. At the time I thought Bush was too stupid to muff things up any more than he did, so I felt he was fairly harmless in that respect.
Second, I reasoned that the person who got us into a pointless war would be able to get us back out.
These were both errors in judgment on my part, and I apologize for them. Please do not attack these points because you are now preaching to the choir. I no longer defend that stance, and hope people don't assume I am that stupid any longer. - Schmich, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1You know, living in Switzerland I had I no doubt in my mind that Bush would lose in 2004. I thought there was no chance he would win. I would have thought the same about McCain today, but really nothing surprises me anymore so I'm not going to think anything and just see what happens...
All I will say is, USA don't let us down again and make us look up to you again!

- Kannebas, on 09/26/2008, -5/+14Sort of...
- DarkPrincess74, on 09/26/2008, -3/+27yes, he "won" both elections just like he "graduated" from yale.
- akchrs, on 09/26/2008, -3/+3And the liberal/progressive democrats LOST twice.
- batkins, on 09/26/2008, -2/+4And then bush ruined the country, are you proud of that or something because it almost sounds like you're bragging about voting for a retard who turned out to be the worst president in history...
- kolobcreek, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3Simple he's trying to show everyone that Obama is a junior senator and that he's been in Washington since before they created dirt. Its all obviously a political maneuver.
- cowninja, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2So if I disagree with you on politics then I shouldn't be permitted to vote? nice.
- tkstock, on 09/26/2008, -4/+3No. Liberals would never want to restrict your voting rights, never. Unless, of course, you're not liberal.

- TehMoos, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Actually, my mom voted for him in 2000 (she was unable to vote in 2004, she was really tired and had a stroke earlier that year) and is voting for Obama this year. She just didn't know any better back then and followed whatever our church told us.
- tkstock, on 09/26/2008, -1/+1So which church does she go to now? Trinity?
- TehMoos, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1No. :) We still go to our same church, but I'm teaching her to be more open minded... Or she's still a sheep and just following what I say...

But I think Democrats would take that seat in a special election as well.

- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/26/2008, -1/+19Actually, half of all American voters are that stupid. You know Bush is a two-term President, right?
Also, have you seen the latest polls? McCain is up by a point since suspending the campaign.
I don't agree with it, but the fact is we are a nation of blissful ignorance. - enigmaneo, on 09/26/2008, -1/+13Voters are stupid
- BooneFaustus, on 09/26/2008, -0/+8Yeah the smart ones don't vote. I kid, I kid...... or do I?
- SSPink, on 09/26/2008, -0/+11Yeah, in case anyone doesn't understand politics, that was video of a candidate campaigning. He sent out talking points to his surrogates about how to campaign on the "campaign suspension", he had a campaign interview with Couric, he held campaign press conferences, and he sent out his campaign surrogates to promote the campaign. This is simply a political stunt that only served to muddy the process in Washington. The only thing that he suspended is his campaign commercials for a few days in an effort to save some money so he can hope tp compete in the last few weeks of this campaign. He is having to spend money in states like Indiana, Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, and Missouri, states he was supposed to win. His campaign doesn't have the money to compete in almost to twenty swing states. The money saved by this stunt might not be much, but the election doesn't really begin until the after the debates, so if he suspends his television ads and pushes the start of the debate season back, he may shorten the real election run-up enough to compete monetarily with the Obama campaign's vast coffers.
- VinnieDaMac, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Just the Republican ones.
- kolobcreek, on 09/26/2008, -10/+3Dude I see the bleeding heart ***** you guys put out..... And you think we're stupid? Your stuff doesn't even make sense unless..... Democrats are the party of the "Emotional Thinkers". Try using some logic instead of the Micheal Moore "Shock Slogan Handbook". Maybe you'll get some of those "stupid people" to vote with you.

Any questions? - funkyloki, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3And exactly what does that have to do with McCain's faux-suspension of his campaign? When you suspend your campaign, you should not be doing ads, your "surrogates" should not be doing interviews, YOU should not be doing interviews, and you shouldn't be running ads. He's still doing all of that, including running ads, something he said would stop when he announced the "suspension". On TV last night in my town (Reno), on a major network was an ad attacking Obama. The man is a liar, a political panderer, and has everyone of his ideals down the river to the Republican campaign machine.
So tell, me what does your comment have to do with those facts.Calling him on his lies is not bleeding heart. Is it too much to ask that the man do what he said he was going to do?

#1 Palin.... Who is the only unknown in this election? Who are the news networks going to keep on the front page and in the prime time? (Why? because they sell ads. People want something new to read)
#2 Keep Palin/REPs in the headlines by metering the number of interviews she does.
#3 Show everyone that Obama is a Jr Senator by showing him up in WA. (How many sit downs has Obama had with a president?)
#4 Keep them on the defense by keeping the reacting to McCaine's actions- stigmataman, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1"3 Show everyone that Obama is a Jr Senator by showing him up in WA. (How many sit downs has Obama had with a president?)"

Its just like how they say nukular. - TunaFishGangsta, on 09/26/2008, -2/+6Funny that the "neo conservatives" are is the whiniest most liberal party out there today. Ideally this would be a contest between Ron Paul, Bob Barr, and Barack Obama. That would give people something to think about from three candidates who are truly more conservative than McCain.
- jdibiase, on 09/26/2008, -5/+4"How did I know he was going to mention those dam Town Hall meetings!!" Because it's directly on point and shows why it's ridiculous to say McCain is scared to debate Obama.
- MelvinSchlubman, on 09/26/2008, -1/+7McCain is scared of a straight-up, serious debate with Obama. His current attempt to avoid, or at least delay, the prez & VP debates at least hints at that.
I confess to scratching my head a little over why McCain thinks his invitation to these town hall meetings is so compelling. Obviously, McCain thinks that's an advantageous forum for him. Why would that be? I think because the questions would mostly be softball compared to the ones expected in the 3 formal debates. There'd be more opportunities for McCain to use Rove-style attacks on cultural wedge issues. The formal debates would more consistently ask issues-oriented Qs -- less likely to get "boxers vs briefs" junk Qs, and wedge issue Qs by plants (like that phoney "press reporter" who was a plant at Bush White House press conferences).
That said, I don't want pols to only be buffered from we unwashed masses by the 4th estate. I want the campaigns to have some grilling by regular citizens. My quibble: I think McCain would be overmatched in the debates (we'll see), so he's trying to spin these town halls as equal to or more valid than the 3 debates. And, he'd love to keep Gov. Palin in her bubble and a million miles from any debate. - tdrizzle, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2You're going to get buried but you're completely correct.
- stigmataman, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1Why should Obama participate in a format that McCain's better at? How about they give speeches back to back on their policies and plans? And if McCain says no, we call him scared. The debates are a healthy compromise.
- funkyloki, on 09/26/2008, -1/+1Town hall meetings are not debates, and Obama was correct to pass them over. Why? Because town-hall meetings that are specifically setup by the McCain camp would have had the deck completely stacked against Obama. Officially sanctioned debates would not. Talk about bias.
- MelvinSchlubman, on 09/26/2008, -1/+7McCain is scared of a straight-up, serious debate with Obama. His current attempt to avoid, or at least delay, the prez & VP debates at least hints at that.
- basefx, on 09/26/2008, -1/+2This was a debate planned well in advance that both campaigns agreed to, infact the mccain camp pushed to have the first topic be about foreign policy since that's his supposed strong point, so for him to bring up that foolish beef about the townhalls, as if this were something obama was inviting him to and he's returning the snub is disingenous at best. Honestly what kind of strong leader would be this petty?

- btschul, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7McCain : Keep troops in Iraq
Obama : Keep SOME troops in Iraq
See the difference? - CZzyzx41, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3McCain: Keep troops in Iraq indefinitely. 100 years is just fine with me.
Obama: Keep some troops in Iraq for now. Pulling them all out at once would be stupid. Create a deadline by which we will slowly pull our troops out over the course of 2-3 years, allowing us to get our attention off of Iraq and onto Al Qaeda where it should have been all along.
Yup you're right. Virtually identical. Oh and while Biden has actually MET with foreign leaders, Palin might have once seen a Russian and talked to a couple Canadian people. - funkyloki, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3To be fair, Palin did a whirlwind one day tour with foreign leaders attending UN meetings and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. We have no idea what they talked about since the press was not allowed to attend, save for a few cameramen that were allowed in at each meeting for about 15 seconds, and it was the first meetings she ever had with foreign leaders, AND it was more a ploy to prove later that she now has foreign policy experience, AND they were some remarkably short meetings, but to say now that she has never met any foreign leaders is no longer factual.

- hokie15102, on 09/26/2008, -24/+10Funny how this article is on digg....but no one ever mentioned how Barack Obama was too scared to hold town meetings with McCain during this run up to the election. Not to mention that Obama was also too much of a baby to have any debates on Fox News. So, in essence, Obama will talk to the big bad Armadinahjad but not Fox News? That makes sense.
I've said it for a long time now...Obama just isn't what America thinks he is. This just doesn't add up.- dysfunction, on 09/26/2008, -13/+6I'm strongly opposed to McCain, but you do have a point. The headline is ridiculous, asking 'why can't McCain debate Obama', when Obama did refuse a series of debates with McCain.
- enantiodromia, on 09/26/2008, -4/+23for the 800,000th time, the "town-hall" meetings were not open to the public, were invitation only, and controlled by McCain. why on earth would anyone agree to that? would McCain agree to a 'debate' hosted at Berkeley, where the only people invited were ACLU lawyers?
also, do you really think for 3 seconds that a "debate" on FOX News would be anything other than a Right Wing circle jerk? if you want to be a legitimate news outlet, you don't tell your interviewees to "shut up" and ask the producers to kill the mics of someone opposing you.- OddMoniker, on 09/26/2008, -0/+8Good point about Fox. It would be a sight to see though...Seam Hannity would ask really easy questions to McCain and Palin, and then turn around and let Obama and Biden have it. Fox IS unbalanced...not the ONLY unbalanced news organization, but certainly the MOST unbalanced.

- enantiodromia, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4but this is the same thing over and over again. these people cry because Obama didn't get tricked into these one sided "town halls", even though it would have been monumentally stupid to agree to such a thing, and they keep harping on it over and over...
- hokie15102, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0Thanks Enigmaneo. I really respect the fact that you like to hear others opinions...even when you don't agree. You know, I thought that was supposed to be the point of digg.
And as far as the town halls...I've never heard that they were supposed to be 1 sided. And if they were, then couldn't Obama of used his leadership skills to make them even?! I really don't think Obama even tried.
- funkyloki, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1You must have forgotten where Obama went on Bill O'reilly's show. You know, the one on Fox News?
And lets not get into the town hall meetings, which were not sanctioned by the Federal Election Committee, and were solely and specifically setup by the McCain camp. Why would candidate agree to such a biased forum? To refer to these town hall meetings as debates is not correct. And BTW, Obama did attend the Saddleback Forum, which was more like a town hall meeting than a debate. It has nothing to do with cowardice and everything to do with impartiality.

So, today I fought with my friend about politics and he is a supporter of John McCain. He told me that "maybe John McCain is kind of right, how much worse can we get?" I exploded with rage. It is so SCARY to me that someone who is as educated as him can say this. Think of others who aren't interested in politics. It's so frightening to me that America can be led by a man who didn't think we had an economic crisis until practically yesterday. We are SO close to another Great Depression and it leaves such a bad taste in my mouth that someone can actually think that it can only get better. The USD could be worth a quarter of what it is now, unemployment can sky rocket, inflation could go through the roof and America could be screwed. I am honestly freaked out that someone can look at these news stories and look the other way. I'm nervous.
- trickyt, on 09/26/2008, -0/+9I agree with these concerns. Additionally though, I don't believe 700 billion is enough to stem the tide. My worry is that this 700 billion will just be more sandbags, and when that's not enough, just keep piling more on. I don't think any amount of money can replace a sound foundation.
There will be serious fallout from whatever happens: on the one hand, many unintended consequences doing a bailout, on the other hand, a complete lockdown of the credit market due to a confidence crisis. This economy WILL grind to a halt without lending. I'd argue a debt economy is inherently unstable, but it's what we have. This has been going on for far too long, and I can only hope that everything works out to result in an orderly debt deflation & deleveraging instead of chaos. There will be many unintended winners and losers in all of this, and perhaps some intended winners and losers.- trafficlight, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7To continue the hurricane analogy:

-Well no ***** McCain. Its because Barrack isn't an idiot. Hmm, lets think about it. You want him to do many "town hall" debates in random towns that most likely wont be broadcast live to the entire country. Will only likely get 30 secs or so of random coverage on different media outlets like The Daily Show, or some other random place (the occasional few very bad debates).
So you get the chance to get up there with him, look like an idiot in front of maybe a thousand people, and a town, figure out exactly how Obama is going to attack you at the REAL debates. Then you could devise some devious plan for when the real debates happen. Instead, your stuck going to the debates now not ready, and your going to look like a complete idiot to the ENTIRE country. From the get go it was obvious that McCain used the financial crisis so he can look like the guy whos saved the US! Most likely if economics will be discussed in the debate he will use this for all his argument.

Credit goes to whoever made up that name for McCain. It was a fellow digger, I just can't remember who. - deadbaby, on 09/26/2008, -3/+14Palin did the same thing. She said politics shouldn't be interjected after saying America was "waiting for John McCain" because they didn't trust Obama. When she was asked why she believes that even though there's no data to suggest that is true -- and to the contrary there is data to suggest it is untrue -- she didn't really have any answer. It was one of those weird hypocritical arguments that worked on many levels. She has no ground to criticize anyone on experience and was clearly interjecting politics into it.
Policy differences aside I think it's time to stop the arrogance and lies. I'm still hopeful that there will be an exodus of Republicans who realize that while they may not agree with Obama on all of the issues the country really can't take another 4 years of this partisan civil war we have going on. From the perspective of a Republican voter I don't think it would be so bad to lose this election, dust yourselves off, clean up your act, and come back in 2012 and beyond. This guy just can't be President. I think if Republicans stop and examine their conservative roots they understand that. Neither Bush nor McCain have been good for the Republican party. You need someone who can actually unite the country behind your ideas and really sell your way of thinking to work with Democrats to make it a reality. Not another "you're either with us or against us" guy. Face the facts, the democrats are probably going to make some big gains in congress. They will not allow McCain to do much of anything. That is a political reality. A vote for McCain is a vote for 4 years of gridlock and it will be bad for everyone involved. - ancientshoes, on 09/26/2008, -17/+4If obama get elected, you should all be terrified.

obama cant win on the issues you idiots- dropbox, on 09/26/2008, -2/+8Town hall meetings are not debates. They are designed to be a Q&A without any structured crossover. These sort of engagements are what you see every time a candidate holds a news conference or audience attended Q&A. The only difference between those and McCain's idea is that both candidates would be in the same place at the same time, giving the illusion of debate -- without any what-so-ever.
Obama knows this, and it's why he chose to simply run his own campaign with his own meetings and let the American people decide. He knew it would take way too much of his time to attend, I think the number was ten, meetings while already under a busy schedule.
And now that the real debates are here, what happens? McCain runs and hides, just like his campaign chief and Palin. They want to keep themselves away from real questions, instead focusing on personal attacks.
And as a side note, the idea of personal attacks is a logical fallacy. Substituting evidence for abusive remarks is not a reasonable, or logical, way to disprove the claims or position of another person. You need to display opposing facts, instead.

- Toodyblampon, on 09/26/2008, -9/+1If you are referring to McCain postponing the debate there are many reasons for this. He wants to serve the country, and he wants to do what he was elected to do. Im not fully supportive of him, but all that I am saying is that at least he is doing his elected duty. We are in a crisis right now and something must be done NOW. Senator Obama should join him not write this off as a ploy to avoid a debate.
So digg me down for this if you please, but hes doing what is right.- yisforyeti, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3I would digg you down if I thought you were trolling, but I feel like you actually believe what you're saying. The problem with what McCain is doing is that, if his reasons for suspending his campaign are exactly what he says they are and nothing more, he should be in Washington spending every waking moment working with other lawmakers to solve the current crisis. Instead, he's showing up on CBS news talking about Obama. You have to admit that that's really, blatantly dishonest.
- funkyloki, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2If he was truly thinking of country first when he said he was suspending his campaign, he would have stopped doing interviews, he would have stopped running ads, and he would have had none of his surrogates on TV attacking Obama, which he also did AFTER he claimed he was suspending his campaign. Ads are still running, he is still campaigning, and his surrogates are still attacking.
I agree, if he had done what he said he was gonna do, more power to him. But some things I think you are overlooking if he was so diligent in his work:
-He hasn't voted since April.
-He sits on none of the committees that deal with this bailout, therefore the only thing he can do about this is talk to people, which he can do over a phone and does not need to suspend his whole campaign to do it, and vote on it, which he can fly back, do, and leave all in one day.
-The debate he is planning on not attending costs the taxpayers of Mississippi $5,000,000 for nothing, and Mississippi has gone to great lengths to setup. They may not be able to reschedule it without major hassles, so so much for looking out for the taxpayer and overspending.

The reason you're not good at the economy is that you're not good at math. (If you want to deal with most earmarks awarded per person you should talk to your running mate.) Listen, the problem is there's 700 BILLION dollars in financial liabilities and Paulson and Bush are asking for a blank check. I'd rather the banks cannibalize each other, then split up if necessary, and new banks fill the voids. However, in the advent this bill passes, I want some protection (i.e. collateral), a chance at making money back and then some, and regulations to be put back in place that worked well for over 70 years. He's going to Washington to "fix the economy" that he had a hand in breaking, and he wants to take a pot shot at earmarks?!? Earmarks are not the problem. Talk about out of touch.
