If Obama's A "Celebrity," What's McCain?
cbsnews.com — McCain emerged as the most popular Republican in Hollywood following his 2000 primary defeat, winning more screen time than the rest of Congress combined. He made cameos in “Wedding Crashers” and “24,” saw his memoir turned into a popular biopic on A&E, and appeared more than 30 times on late night comedy shows. So isn't McCain a celebrity, too?

Is that really the kind of person we want as prez?

There's nothing exotic or complicated about how phenoms are made in Washington, and, more to the point, how they are broken.
"Andy Warhol said we all get our 15 minutes of fame," says Barack Obama. "I've already had an hour and a half. I mean, I'm so overexposed, I'm making Paris Hilton look like a recluse."
That is pretty much the who and the why of Sen. McCain's explanation of his ad, is it not? It turns out he wasn't mocking Sen. Obama so much as channeling him. Or making a mini-documentary out of the Post's article.

What the hell do you people want? John Kerry was a decorated war veteran with a purple heart and you beat him up for that. Now Obama's not good enough because he doesn't have military experience? I'll take Obama, Kerry or Gore any day over the current president, whose daddy got him a choice position flying planes during Vietnam or over McCan whose daddy did the same.
P.S. Thank you for your service. I may not agree with you, but I certainly appreciate the sacrifices you have made. - 26thMARINES, on 08/04/2008, -3/+2tree, i wouldnt vote for kerry because of how he got his medals. he was there for publicity only and only long enough to get what he needed to make it to office. he got his medals by getting small cuts on him from the bush. i get that from a rose bush. plus his wife, omg, how could anyone want to see that woman more than we already did. and gore, mr anti-capitalist and global warming fruitcake... minus all that, kerry wasnt the worst. but he was definitely no true verteran like sam nunn and them. again i only beat up kerry personally because of how he got what he did... i respect he went and fought, but the truth is known he really didnt fight.
obama doesnt have any experience. i am not beating him up for that, there is nothing to beat up. if he had some sort of experience to judge i would, be he changes his decisions based upon what is right for him at the time. like today, drilling.. the other day fisa, yall just need to know all he cares about is himself, but so does mccain, but mccain is not acting like moses here..
thanks for your comments, even tho we disagree, it was profressional.

FYI, Obama has ZERO respect for the military. That is good news as the military has ZERO respect for him.- 26thMARINES, on 08/04/2008, -6/+1very true brother.... and since then they havent changed a bit, they run to germany now as well...
- Cuchanu, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3Although you are in the military and admittedly know more people in the military than I do; most of the people I know in the armed forces are not fans of Bush or the war. Some will be voting for Obama because they don't want to fight a war they don't believe in.
That's not to say that there aren't plenty of people in the military that don't like Obama, I don't doubt that, I'm just sharing my experience.
And please explain to me why not wanting to fight in Vietnam or Iraq makes you "scared" or as 26thMARINES put it "crybabies"? If you really look at the two wars and study the reasons for invasion it is clear that they were corporate wars. And some people may not have a problem with that but to me the military's purpose is to protect our country, not promote capitalism.
FYI when there is a war to protect our country a lot of those "scared liberal crybabies" will be there fighting. Until then we will continue to hope our government stops fighting wars that make the rich richer and kill hundreds of thousands of poor people to do so. - 26thMARINES, on 08/04/2008, -5/+1cuchano, unfortunately the liberals that are here crying, wouldnt even fight if they marched on our shores.. they already have sort of, it is called the illegal invasion. liberals are always anti-war, that wont change. it doesnt matter what the war is about, soldiers are told to go fight without question. if they didnt want to fight, they shouldnt have enlisted. this war was agreed to by both parties, but only one side wants to cut and run, and this isnt a war anymore, it is a rebuilding phase and dealing with insurgents. the war was won in days, with small battles lingering after, but these arent battles anymore. crytard is just upset because he was too fat to be in the military, or perhaps too gay, it has to be one of them reasons to hate the military in turn means hate america to be that way. but is he really much different than the senators that just walked out on the american people? most likely no, only difference is he cries here, they cry in the senate.
- jezsik, on 08/04/2008, -1/+426thMARINES, don't forget that it was liberals who founded the United States. As for cutting and running, my how easily you swallow the party line. You're quite right that the war was won a long time ago, but when do we end the current occupation? Tell me, soldier, how do you stop a civil war?
- 26thMARINES, on 08/04/2008, -2/+0jezsik, i dont know how to stop it. maybe thats why i am not a president or a general. but, we stopped it in germany, italy, japan, etc... twice. we stopped it in man wars. problem is those then that were fighting, actually cared about living and prospering. the ones we fight today, only want to die for allah, we just speed up the process for them. i guess you do it by letting the mass of people decide, and they are deciding. 1% will fight you, but when the other 99% stand firm, the 1% just goes away... how do you stos still a civil war here? its still going on, we just arent all killing each other as much anymore. iraq is going in the right direction, anyone that says otherwise is foolish and not in touch with reality.
- jezsik, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Why haven the generals, with all their years of experience, been unable to stop the civil war? Has anyone successfully stopped a civil war? I've looked into it and found no example in history of an outside force, mixed in with two waring factions, achieving any real peace. Why are you so willing to sacrifice the lives of your comrades - because "sacrifice" is the right term - to ATTEMPT to achieve this unattainable goal? There was no civil war in Germany, etc., that was a land grab, plan and simple. The only reason we're in Iraq is become some fool (with a history of bad decision making) decided we should get involved without considering the reality of the consequences and is unwilling to admit he made a mistake. I, for one, am not willing to commit lives, our economy, and the principles on which the country was founded, to a cause that is nothing more than an opportunity to let war profiteers get rich.

- Dumbledorito, on 08/04/2008, -11/+73All of his recent gaffes aside, McCain's "fame" is playing out like a political version of Mae West's downward spiral.
Mae was a sex-pot who still thought she was sexy long after she became old, fat, and dumpy. She became a parody of herself, especially when compared to her earlier work. McCain has the big problem of a long Senatorial record (you voted against just about everything someone likes at least once) along with years of speeches you can't erase, giving your opponents lots of material for flip-flops, opinions that aren't popular anymore, etc.
Plus, McCain's "maverick" trademark is in direct contrast to his embracing of current Republican policies and strategy, further eroding his credibility. This downward slide started several years ago when he visited Bob Jones University to court the more radical right-wing of the GOP base. Claiming that he's a "maverick" now is just as embarrassing as a 60 year old former silicone-queen trying to make a porno.- SheilaNoya, on 08/04/2008, -3/+9LOL - Excellent analogy.

But my guess is that he's very aware of his increasing senility, and knows this is his "one last chance" at being President. It is extremely sad though, having to watch him lose the last bit of his dignity, running this disgraceful campaign (I would of preferred to remember him, as he was). And it will only get worse, from this point on. In the next 3 months, he will undoubtedly try to make Hillary look like a Girl Scout, in comparison.

Brits will get this.- cambob76, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3I got it. I used the Google. Not very funny.
- andrewtheart, on 08/04/2008, -2/+1You don't need to be of a particular race to understand obscure references when you have Google at your side. The entire Internet is of one race - Anonymous (no affiliation with Anon :P)
- Coffeedemon, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Brit would not be a race anyway. Maybe a culture or a definition of current or original geographical occupation.
- andrewtheart, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1Sorry, wrote that comment early this morning :P

- Guncrazy, on 08/04/2008, -10/+4McCain was a celebrity when the media wanted a Republican who played grab-ass with the Democrats. (See: McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act; McCain-Kennedy Immigration Reform Bill; "I'm the best suited to work with Democrats." --McCain, February 2008).
In other words, he was a celebrity Republican in a Democrat-dominated media.
Now that the media have a true Democrat to celebrate--and get elected--well...no ***** McCain is going to get ignored. The ***** should have expected it.
God damn the GOP for not giving us a CONSERVATIVE candidate. - PepeGSay, on 08/04/2008, -2/+7Well at least we've finally come full circle to an article that just comes out and says "Obama's rubber. McCain is glue. Bounce of him stick on you."
- vimbuza, on 08/04/2008, -16/+11OK OK OK. I'm done with digg for now. This site has been nothing propaganda. Used to be fun. Maybe we'll see you after the election.

- vimbuza, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1plus everyone is so NICE here.
- JimSwarthow, on 08/04/2008, -4/+8I think they're both idiots, btw - that said, am I the only one who thinks calling the leader of the free world a "celebrity" isn't necessarily a "good" thing? I mean this isn't American Idol we're talking about here.. we're talking about the person who's gonna be steering the ship for the next 4 years w/ 300,000,000 people aboard. having a "celebrity" at the helm doesn't exactly fill me w/ a whole lotta confidence.
- SreyaNotfilc, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1I believe the issue here is that at least for the past 16 years America wasn't totally behind their leader. half agreed and half opposed our current president. The media seems to be bent of swaying opposing beliefs towards Bush that it's hard to root for him (even if you voted for him in the past election(s)).
I guess the celebrity term has emerged not because one candidate is better than the other. I believe it's more of, who would you rather have displayed as the "face of the nation"? Or better yet, which one has the best potential to be the gleam in the nation's eye. Both candidates have good qualities and both have bad ones as well.
The way I see it is that (about a year or so) after the election (where we can settle down and accept the fact that XXXX is our president), who would the country really be pleased to see when an imporant issue arises? Who would we look at without rolling our eyes from every word our new president says? Other countries see our headlines and read our news. We are suppose to be the world power, but how can we if even our democratic nation is opposed to our current president that we voted in, ya know?
Basically, there is a need to have our country love our leader, and our leader to love our country. Many believe that our last great leader was JFK. He was a celebrity as well as have a good head on his shoulder. We as a country yearns for days like that again. Heck, I'm 24 and never had felt that yet. Hopefully in my lifetime that will happen. On can only hope...- JimSwarthow, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1"Many believe that our last great leader was JFK."
and many don't know American history. doesn't matter which side of the aisle you prefer, Google the Reagan Administration and take a look at those numbers.. then compare them w/ JFK's. not even close. maybe if he'd lived he woulda made a "difference", I dunno. hot wife or not, in his 3 short years he stumbled every bit as much as the next guy. Reagan coulda won a 3rd term if he'd decided to pull a Hugo Chavez and amend the Constitution. - I'm not taking a political side here I'm just stating the plain facts as they happened as well as how I remember them. - JimSwarthow, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1I have no idea why someone dugg you down, btw. it wasn't me. I don't necessarily agree w/ your POV but I do appreciate the fact that you're not hysterical w/ partisan rhetoric. unlike 99.936% around here
- SreyaNotfilc, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0That's fine. They can digg me down if they want. I do appreciate that you gave an explaination on why you dissagree with me instead of phantomly opposing my views (i.e. the red thumbs down button lol). I just wanted to give my opinion on why one would care if our politicians are celebrities. Now-a-day politicians will become celebrities no matter what. Usually this is in a negative sense. We basically use satire to point out their flaws instead of understanding their point of view and reasoning for their political proposals. *shrug* that's just the way we are. Now one can argue that Reagan could've won a 3rd team. Clinton could have won a 3rd term. Heck, even George W. could have won a 3rd term. Many people were opposed to his view during the second election. Celebrities made it their agenda to vote him out of the office (Puff Daddy's Vote or Die lol). Judging from the media, it seems as if no one wanted Bush around, but he still remained in office. I'm not giving my views on him because it's really not needed in this argument. I'm no history major, but to me it seems as if Kennedy embodied the spirit of the American culture at that time. Not saying that Reagan didn't do anything for this country, but it does seem as if JFK had this wonderful aura around him. There are many books and video about that man and his influence on the nation. I'm not sure about his politics (since all you read in history class is about his assassination) but that man did capture a lot of attention from his nation, and many people were willing to follow him. If all you had were hear-say and the media (be it Hollywood, News Sources, PBS) there seems to be a very lopsided view on JFK. That is, that he was this "great" person. *shrug* Then again, context also plays into it as well. There were a lot of serious issues going on back in that time period, and the way he'd handled it may have swayed people's lasting views on him.
If asked about what I would remember of JFK I would say "great speaches, space race, cold war, civil rights, assasination". If I was asked about Reagan I would say "Genesis' Land of Confusion video and Jelly Belly". As you can see the media is so powerful that one president is (perhaps unjustly) over-shadowed by the other. That's all.
I like this argument though. I think I should read up on these two presidents (in my free time "ugh") to find out what exactly these two men had accomplished. As you can see, those who haven't followed our history but have heard from popular media outlets can have a more scewed outlook towards our history.
Look at France. When someone mentions Marie Antoinette we immediately think of "Let them eat cake!", and her beheading. Initially we may think that she was very aloof and cared less of her people, but after researching a different story emerges. That's the media spin and hear-say for you.
Anyway, thanks for the arguement!

- toytoyota, on 08/04/2008, -6/+6I bet McCain hadn't even seen the ad that his people made until it was talked about. When I look at that guy, I just see a man doing what his people tell him to do, no leader there.
- Fanboy88, on 08/04/2008, -2/+7The celebrity bit is lame. Who wants a president who isn't popular? A president or presidential candidate is going to get special treatment. IMHO, the people who are whining about this are cry-babies. Ron Paul or Obama can fill a stadium with 40,000 people. McCain can't.
- ftx437, on 08/04/2008, -13/+7People need to stop praising obama as the chosen one..HE'S NOT!

- truck87bp, on 08/04/2008, -7/+4McCain is an embarrassment to the American public. His campaign has Damaged the Republican Party and the Democratic party. He has openly demonstrated just how stupid Washington thinks of the general population. I think most good Americans will be so glad when the Election is over that they will go out for a walk the following night just to get away from the TV Politics.
Who ever is elected, they better count on having to working for the People or will be out on the street so fast it will make their head spin. Impeachment will be demanded by the people to stay on the table. - Sparuuto, on 08/04/2008, -4/+3Do you think he realises Arnold Scwarzenegger is a "celebrity" as well?
- atarideath, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5Well he must have also forgot about Ronald Reagan.

- runCMD, on 08/04/2008, -8/+2Q: If Obama's A "Celebrity," What's McCain?
A: The next president of the United States of Americal. LOL.
I actually prefer the line. McCain's the leader, Obama's the loser. Even if Obama manages to take nomination when his album drops ... the nation still loses as a whole - for having to listen to it for 4 years. - idleminded, on 08/04/2008, -1/+5http://www.spike.com/video/john-mccain-on-24/26961 ...
Ha! I had never known McCain made an appearance on 24. That's pretty funny. He doesn't even get a good cameo. - brooklynart, on 08/04/2008, -2/+0Simple. He's Jealous with more than a tinge of bitterness. You can see how he positions his messages in a category cloud image of his rss feed over at http://blog.brooklynartproject.com/?p=187. Pretty interesting especially when you compare it to Obama's. Gotta love how web 2.0 stuff is filtering all the talking points. :)
