McCain Admits He Doesn't Know How To Use A Computer watch!
huffingtonpost.com — No need for commentary. Who can't use a computer? Oh yeah my grandparents.
- 4296 diggs
- digg it
- rahamm, on 06/11/2008, -23/+680This is how all of us who use a computer get f-ed in the A we elected someone who knows nothing about them. His policies on the Internet, and other media will reflect just that. Please Diggers consider this.
- Sfenton, on 06/11/2008, -80/+17I have no clue how a gun works, or how it is made but I clearly understand the second amendment that we deserve and honor to protect. Just because I have never used one, doesn't make me an idiot on the subject.
Compare Obama's policy to McCain's policy on technology and business. You will find McCain's policy much more favorable to business, LESS TAXES.- rahamm, on 06/11/2008, -3/+64You compare Obama's policy to McCain's on Internet privacy and net neutrality and you will find Obama's honours the 4th Amendment while McCain does not. Don't quote the Constitution at me not only that but but McCain has done nothing to the but NOT honoured the Second amendment either.
He is the one who voted to limit the number of bullets per clip to ten and he is the one who voted to make trigger locks mandatory. He has not been a friend to gun owners. Gun Owners Association grades him a D-. If McCain by some fluke, gets elected, we'll all be clinging to our religions. It will be all we have left. He already made inroads into our first amendment right and has also voted to shut down gun sales at gun shows. He and Lieberman co authored a bill to shut down gun shows altogether but it failed...for now.
I would not expect you to know that because you have never used a gun much like McCain and computers thanks for proving my point. Could you have set me up better with your example? In the end he doesn't understand them so can I expect him to make an educated decision about them. Much like you and your Second Amendment and McCain.- mechnoch, on 06/11/2008, -0/+36Oh snap!
Also, I don't get people who think that the only possible thing that could benefit business is "LESS TAXES". Sure, taxes are one component, but doing things to spur competition and innovation should also be taken into consideration.
(NET NEUTRALITY, FTW!) - gn0stik, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8Agreed JM is no Darling of gun owners. I also agree that the US should pass no law restricting access to internet content. However the internet is not purely an American phenomena, and is therefor not strictly subject in any way to the US constitution. We can only watchdog ourselves on this.
- masterm1nd, on 06/11/2008, -17/+4I know I'll be buried, but to be fair, Obama supports the second amendment even less than McCain.
- rahamm, on 06/11/2008, -2/+13At least he supports the 4th Amendment, as well as the first, and the 14th, McCain has nothing on those. In fact we could down the list I think the Constitutional Law Prof (Obama) might know a little more about the Constitution then a man who, as I see it, does not respect a word written on it.
- masterm1nd, on 06/11/2008, -12/+1Rahamm, the founding fathers would be rolling in their graves at the thought of both candidates. Socialism is the antithesis of America.
- rottencod, on 06/11/2008, -2/+13masterm1nd: no, America is defined by the American People. If the American People decide to elect Obama as our president, then that choice IS American, by definition. There is no such thing as the American People doing something "unAmerican." It's called self-government. You should check it out sometime.
- thirteenthcor, on 06/11/2008, -2/+2Define socialism rahamm
- zombies187, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3Apparently it would really help out the repubs if Obama endorsed socialism. Hmmm that seems like a negative strategy. I think it would be great if McCain had something to endorse. I haven't seen it.
- DavidBGie, on 06/12/2008, -5/+1George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, JFK, Ronald Reagan. All the great presidents (and ones not mentioned) didn't know how or even know what a computer was. That doesn't mean they didn't know how to lead a country. At the top level of managing a country computers are just trivial. Lower administration and lawmakers can take care of those details. The president needs to worry about the big picture. Is this not common sense?
- mechnoch, on 06/11/2008, -0/+36Oh snap!
- daebat, on 06/11/2008, -5/+20you're a f*cking idiot sfenton. people like you get george bush into office and then wonder why you're bitching 4 years later.
- Sfenton, on 06/11/2008, -7/+1How am I an idiot? I voiced my honest opinion, if you would like to talk about Gun control and which candidate is for the second amendment, that will easily go to McCain. If you would like to argue with me, compare legislations passed and voted on by each candidate. You want to talk about net neutrality? Do you really want the government to have more control of our lives, remember what we did with AT&T? Have you seen how it is almost the same as it was before? That was called government intervention.
- rahamm, on 06/11/2008, -2/+2I think the candidate for second amendment rights is Bob Barr. Not only that McCain has Pissed on the 4th Amendment your argue is moronic that is the problem. You want to vote on the Constitution the vote would go to Obama, you want to vote on the second Amendment the vote goes Barr. McCain loses all around.
- MWeather, on 06/11/2008, -1/+4"How am I an idiot? I voiced my honest opinion"
You just answered your own question.
- Ebonsteel, on 06/11/2008, -7/+17Holy ***** - all you mindless GOP-bots know how to do is gurgle "LESS TAXES!"
***** idiot. - Mohdoo, on 06/11/2008, -6/+13You got owned really, really, really, really hard. Consider this next time you choose to post.
- cwmather, on 06/11/2008, -8/+8Wow, you all are brutal. Someone has an opinion that doesn't match yours and now he's a f***ing idiot?
Self righteous pricks.- MacEnvy, on 06/11/2008, -1/+4Welcome to the Internets. Pull up a chair, grab yourself a Molotov Cocktail.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Quite frankly we need to RAISE TAXES. Even if it does cause a recession. If we don't do something to curtail our national debt soon we will be in a lot worse situation than a recession. Someone needs to pay for our wars.
- JumpingJack79, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Sfenton, Obama would exempt startup companies from tax, to promote business growth and innovation, i.e. he would cut taxes for those who really NEED that. McCain would not do that. He would only cut taxes for the ALREADY RICH companies. How does that help "business"?
Also, do you realize that taxes are used for government services? Currently the country is spending A LOT more money than it "earns" (for the Iraq war among other things). The US is already 9 TRILLION dollars in debt to other countries (most notably China). If China alone stops lending money, the US can no longer function. Do you want to be that dependent on foreign countries or would you want your country to finally stand up on its own feet?
Sure, "lower taxes" sounds great, but it is terribly short-sighted. It's like buying a house on a loan that you can't pay off. And you know what happens then, don't you...
- rahamm, on 06/11/2008, -3/+64You compare Obama's policy to McCain's on Internet privacy and net neutrality and you will find Obama's honours the 4th Amendment while McCain does not. - DangerMouse9, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8If you mean the liberty to get shot at in an unjust war, or the liberty to get ***** in the ass by Papa Gov't, then I don't want those liberties.
It'd be nice to know specifically what the ***** you are talking about, but I suppose that's too much to ask for. - laserdog, on 06/11/2008, -2/+12Obama will only raise your taxes if you make more than 600k a year.

- funkedup, on 06/11/2008, -2/+44I think a president should be required to use a computer, in this day and age there is NO excuse not to. I don't think they need to learn any complicated programs but basic computer skills are essential.
- diggrnumber1, on 06/11/2008, -1/+35he wouldn't be able to graduate from high school today without knowing basic computer skills. i guess he needs to go back.
- hahafaha, on 06/11/2008, -13/+9Why on Earth should that be a requirement? He has absolutely no need for one. That is precisely what aides are for.
Don't get me wrong, I'm an avid computer user, but it's absolutely not necessary to do a good job as president.- yohnstoppable, on 06/11/2008, -1/+18Not knowing basic computer skills is about the equivalent in this day and age to not knowing how to drive.
- selrahc, on 06/11/2008, -6/+6Is knowing how to drive a necessary skill for a president? I honestly don't care if the president knows how to use a computer, drive, swim, or fly a helicopter as long as he can and will consult more knowledgeable people on those things if an issue ever arises.
- cramtod, on 06/11/2008, -0/+24Let me guess, his aides are going to carve his email into blocks of stone for him to read so he can use a technology he's comfortable with?
Computers are a handy tool. His lack of computer skills doesn't disqualify him for president. His lack of curiosity and willingness to expand his skills should. - DangerMouse9, on 06/11/2008, -0/+10@selrahc
You want him to make policy based on what his aides tell him about computers, or worse yet what the RIAA/MPAA/etc. lobbyists do? - guitaristanyc, on 06/11/2008, -0/+11My father is a little older than McCain and he only started learning how to use a computer about 7 or 8 years ago - if he can do it, McCain sure as f**k can.
- lisaawesome, on 06/12/2008, -0/+7Shoot my dad is just a few years younger than McCain and recently got his very first laptop. He can't do a lot on it but he knows how to check e-mails, get on MySpace, and play online poker at least. I thought it was pretty cool until my dad asked me one day if you had to be truthful when making a MySpace account.
- Spudster, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1While the president isn't REQUIRED per se to be good at using a computer or knowing how to drive, it's something you would certainly expect them to have if you're choosing the most important job in the world.
- oldgal, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1I am an old fart and I have been a technician since I got out of college in the mid 60s. Although I am recently retired, I worked mostly on the edge of state-of-the-art stuff. Never has it been so important for the leadership in this country to understand the potential of new technologies. The younger generations understand the newer technologies intuitively and will take it places us old farts (who have to struggle to learn it) would never dream of. This is called the future. If the U.S. wants to remain competitive it needs leadership that understands the younger generations and their technologies. It is particularly crucial as infrastructure is being built and standards are being established. All of the folks I know 65 and older believe McCain is just too old in world-view and in technology-view.
- JumpingJack79, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1This is like saying that a president doesn't have to know how to read and write - he can have aides for that. Technically that's true, but it is very inefficient and certainly I'd say that a person lacking such basic knowledge is not fit for a president.
And then, what ARE the requirements for a president? Just the willingness to push the red button?

That reflects how McCain Understand the Internet. You are misinformed on the subject and look stuipd becuase of it.
That is just one example of how McCain is out of touch BTW.- FriedMoose, on 06/11/2008, -2/+2Prison planet as your source? Read the actual bill
It states that companies that WILLFULLY do not report child porn will be fined. It also states NEGLIGENT companies will be fined. Negligence=The failure to use reasonable care. The doing of something which a reasonably prudent person would not do, or the failure to do something which a reasonably prudent person would do under like circumstances. A departure from what an ordinary reasonable member of the community would do in the same community. - rahamm, on 06/11/2008, -2/+6That is right just attack the source and dismiss it.

It says negligent companies will be fined. Not if some random bozo posts an image on your forum. So...rather than it being your compelte lack of the law, it is their lack of computers that makes it think that it is NOT OK for you to distribute other people's creative works without their permission?
You are the ***** ignorant one. Not them. - yevkasem, on 06/11/2008, -3/+5i'd rather have a president who admits to not knowing enough but who is smart enough to seek competent help (that's what advisers/cabinet members are for) than one who insists s/he knows everything about everything and screws it all up.
that being said, john mccain needs quite a bit of help.- warrenterr, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1I don't think his help would be that competent...
- oldgal, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1If you look at the subject-matter advisers for McCain, it is pretty obvious what his stand will be on any given issue - the solution is set, all they have to do is find the problem. If you look at Obama's, it is not at all obvious. Obama likes to hear all points of view - gives me more confidence in creative solutions that identifies problems and solves them.

- JumpingJack79, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1This is A LOT more important than just the net neutrality question! Would you want a president that doesn't know how to read and write? This is basically the same as that!
And it shows that he is incapable of learning! If he can't learn how to use a computer (not even to send an email, a very simple task), how can he learn to run a country?!?!
He only knows what he has learned in his youth, that is how to drop bombs on other countries, and that is NOT the job of a president.

- masterm1nd, on 06/11/2008, -6/+3Sorry to burst your bubble, but even you had to first learn how to use a computer before you knew how to use a computer. If he had been taught to use a computer and attempted for years, and still couldn't get it, then you guys would be right. I take it Obama is an expert and has experience in all of that, right. Face it, you just don't like McCain. Which is fair, but you have a moot point. There is a reason presidents have specialists designated in specific areas.
- lisaawesome, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4I don't know what kinda old people you hang around with but I know plenty of old people who all have computers. The group I happen to know could be described as your stereotypical deep south, uneducated, white trash. And they all e-mail each other to tell them which child/grandchild is in jail or knocked up. If you want to run this country in 2008 and beyond you had better goddamn know how to work a computer. It's one thing to be an old retired man with no interest in today's world or its technology, but it's an entirely other thing to be the leader of the United States of America and have no interest in today's world or its technology. There is nothing to be said that can excuse the potential leader of the free world from being absolutely withdrawn from one of the biggest social and technological revolutions of all time.
- masterm1nd, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Ok, well that makes sense if you are a single issue voter and your mostest importenest issue is the presidents computing abilities.
- MWeather, on 06/14/2008, -0/+1"I take it Obama is an expert and has experience in all of that, right."
You really need to stop drinking the two-party kool-aid.
- Gerz1219, on 06/11/2008, -1/+21"The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should." - John McCain
John McCain is surprisingly candid about his cluelessness with economic matters. He expected this to be another national security election, and just figured he wouldn't have to bother crafting an economic plan after eight years of the most fiscally irresponsible administration in American history. Now he just says the words "tax cuts!" reflexively, without proposing any realistic way to cut spending (pork barrel spending is a fraction of the budget, which McCain doesn't seem to know, and he wants to stay in Iraq indefinitely at infinite cost).
He's also clueless about Iraq, constantly mistaking different ethnic groups and forgetting which factions are allied with each other. When it was pointed out to him that his policies completely contradicted the will of the American people, McCain sneered, "Well, again, I disagree with what the majority of the American people want." [translation: "I am stubbornly out of touch with reality."]
It's inexcusable for a president in the 21st century to be unable to use a computer. McCain will need to have any technology-based legislation explained to him by lobbyists and power brokers, which means he won't be able to exercise his own independent judgment and he could be talked into anything. That could have a major impact on the global economy for decades to come.- masterm1nd, on 06/11/2008, -7/+1Definition of clueless: totally uninformed about what is going on; not having even a clue from which to infer what is occurring.
As you can see, clueless is an exaggeration and completely inaccurate regarding both your examples. If you guys wouldn't embellish so much I wouldn't have much of a rebuttal... - Gerz1219, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7That's not a very firm rebuttal. You are essentially arguing that instead of being *totally* uninformed about what is going on, McCain is merely dangerously ignorant about the most serious issues facing the country.
- masterm1nd, on 06/11/2008, -6/+1Gerz, if it's not true it's not true. In case you haven't realized, each candidate has there own areas of expertise and lack in other areas. On the two things that matter most, the war and economy, McCain scores a 1 and Obama scores a 0. I can guarantee you exaggeration and overstating of your case is counterproductive, but something tells me you want to learn it the hard way.
- MWeather, on 06/11/2008, -1/+3War doesn't matter. The only countries that pose a threat to us have nukes. Even if we cut military spending in half, that would still be true.
I don't think our choice of president is going to matter to someone prepared the end all life as we know it.

Seriously, what does a President NEED a computer for? Sure, sending and receiving messages at a fast speed would be good, but there is also mail or the telephone. The President also has staffers doing all the little things for him.
Pretty much, the President is just the guy who makes all the decisions. He does not need a computer to do that. Frankly, I find it disgusting that one would think it "would be a terrible mistake" to elect someone who cannot use a computer. It just shows how dependent they themselves are on one.- dafunkmonster, on 06/11/2008, -3/+3Indeed. I respect the wisdom and knowledge of my grandparents, and they have trouble sending and receiving emails. If I had grown up in the absence of computers, it would be hard for me to pick it up too. Running the country involves experience, leadership, good decision making skills, and a solid moral foundation.
And honestly, I'm not surprised McCain went back in time to pick a favorite. Aside from a very small handful of recent movies, everything that Hollywood produces these days is absolute crap. And the fact that he can rattle off the entire cast after 50 years? That's impressive to me. - MidnightRealism, on 06/11/2008, -2/+4Direct use of computers may not come into play, but being able to make reasonable judgments in regards to the technology therein based on a good understanding of how they work would surely be a positive, wouldn't you say?

"Because I don't think he has the experience"
What experience? Obama has far more experience doing good for the people of America than McCain has. Nobody can deny the greatness of McCains military service but that doesn't make him a great president. He's got the wrong ideas about.. almost everything.
"and he definitly lost some respect over that church thing."
The preachers than McCain has associated himself with are FAR, FAR nuttier than any that Obama has ever been involved with. Who cares what their preachers say, anyway? I'm voting for Obama, not his preacher.

We may not like his policies, but please, don't lower yourself by disrespecting someone who, even in that prison camp, was considered a hero.
He was given the chance to be released due to his father's status as a promoted admiral, only to deny it so that others who were there in the prison camp before him, along with the enlisted were release before him. From there, he was beaten nearly for 4 years straight.

- Sfenton, on 06/11/2008, -63/+28Since when was being able to use a computer a requirement for being a president? Last time I checked all the previous presidents were able to do their job without the use of a computer. I know it may seem hard to digg, but there are people in the USA have not use a computer or find no need to use one. I remember the stat that 1 in 5 have never emailed before.
Why can't we actually argue about the issues such as NET NEUTRALITY rather than arguing about his lack of using a computer and sounding like assholes about people who have never used a computer.
It's like saying I have never used a gun but I can't have an opinion about the second amendment.
"McCain is senile and senseless, I can't believe he has never used a Xbox360 before or a PS3. Hes probably too old to learn how to use a Wii. Because the Republican candidate doesn't know a ***** thing about computers.- Sfenton, on 06/11/2008, -2/+4Well he obviously understands the conservative policy of less government intervention.
"His take: there should be as little government regulation of broadband as possible. The market should be allowed to solve the Net-neutrality issue: 'When you control the pipe you should be able to get profit from your investment.'"
"I’m all for the government encouraging competition, but I’ve found over time that less government involvement is better. Unless there is a clear-cut, unequivocal restraint of competition, the government should stay out of it. These things will sort themselves out. "
We need a government that should stay out of our lives as much as posible- suttercain, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2"Well he obviously understands the conservative policy of less government intervention. "
Except when it comes to abortion, the legalization of drugs and also homosexual marriage. Hmm... the Republican conundrum, less government except in personal freedom issues, we through that statement out the door.

- mechnoch, on 06/11/2008, -5/+27Ok, so given the fact that he does not know how to use a computer, we can infer that he probably doesn't understand how the internet really works. How can you expect him to make responsible and intelligent executive decisions on issues like NET NEUTRALITY when he probably can't understand the jargon?
Also, I think that people who don't understand how to use a gun, should avoid second-amendment arguments. You can have your opinion, sure, but it's just that, opinion. - Lagger, on 06/11/2008, -8/+34Being able to use a computer is pretty much a requirement to work at McDonalds.

Are you high?!?! How is that even a serious question? Who gives a flying fig about net neutrality, how could you possibly vote for a person who doesn't even know how to use a computer. A 6 year olds know how to use a computer, the terrorist are using computers, you are using a computer. Its 2008 for the love of Christ.
Personally I am voting for the guy who can send a email when he needs to get a message of importance to a foreign diplomat. But thats just me, I am silly in assuming the president of the US is suppose to be a competent intelligent and savvy person.- Latimer, on 06/11/2008, -8/+4"The terrorists are using computers"

- ...---..., on 06/11/2008, -1/+10Being able to read is also not a requirement of the presidency - nor is the ability to do simple addition. But... would you elect a guy that couldn't do these common things?
- Gemfinder, on 06/11/2008, -1/+6Like another poster said, if he didn't know a pixel from a hole in the ground, and was clued-in on everything else, this wouldn't be an issue. Computer illiteracy is easily amended.
But given McCain's general temperament and his apparent mental state, he's probably clueless for keeps, as in "Doesn't know, doesn't wanna know."
Do you really want a President who doesn't understand 80% of the people he's governing? And yes, he'd be a pushover to the anti-Net Neutrality brigade.
And since he's a Republican (read: anarchic capitalism), during his tenure we'd probably see the 'Net completely monopolized by...take your pick. Fox News? Comcast (with the ***** customer service record in corporate America)? Walmart?!?
Wanna pay $299.99/month for Internet service — and only be able to access "recommended sites" that spoon-feed you what they want you to see and nothing else, regularly crash your machine three times an hour and are riddled with sloppy code?
It would happen, Amigo. The monopolists in media would salivate at the thought of a clueless President who wouldn't know bugger about what they're doing right under his nose. And they'd have free rein to shaft the Buying Public because nobody at the top level would lift a finger against them.
Illiteracy is illiteracy. He doesn't have to use a computer if he doesn't care to, but for the sake of our personal lives let him be at least conversant when his aides and Congress warn him about a massive hacker attack, rampant censorship or a hostile takeover in the corporate sector.- sassip, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3Gem, I agree. I had a friend who was 87 when I taught him to use a computer. He was by no means proficient, but he did have a curiosity about the emerging world around him. I would think that is a pretty useful attitude for a president of the US.

I'd say that his experience is worth 1000 times more than knowing how to use a computer (which, like I said, can just be handled by someone else, not necessarily him...).
- abby11, on 06/12/2008, -1/+1WRONG!TRY AGAIN LATER
- btattersall, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2As Obama has stated countless times, there was never an administration with more political experience than the second Bush white house...
That is of course, the first term, before most of them were fired, arrested, summoned, questioned, or forced to quit to avoid scrutiny.
I would say that having a strong understanding of prevailing cultural forces, and the ways and means of the people would have as much, if not more importance for a candidate to the presidency. - mechnoch, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1I offer the converse argument. Obama has a firm grasp on reality, and has a clear vision of what the future holds. I believe that this is 10^1000 times more important than 'experience in politics', since Obama can surround himself with people who have more 'experience in politics' to get the ***** done that he knows needs to get done. Obama has enough experience in politics to know how the system works. He has a law degree and taught at Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago before becoming an Illinois state senator, and then a US senator. He's been studying politics for pretty much his entire life, and knows how politics works. McCain, on the other hand, has been in racking up 'experience in politics' for his entire life, and doesn't even know how the modern world (ie computers) function.
That's why I'm voting for Obama. He gets it.
- flumkin, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4You can't argue with sfenton.
The bar is pretty low for conservatives these days. Republican candidates only have to be smarter than a hamster for their party to support them. Bush proved that.

- Kzoo, on 06/11/2008, -1/+0Generally, wisdom comes with age; age by itself shouldn't be an issue (except -maybe- if the candidate is so old that dying during his term is a real concern, even without the added stress of the job). That's why there's a -minimum- age limit for the president and not a maximum.

- ligyron, on 06/11/2008, -4/+4Naa, if McCain wins it wouldn't be because he's white. It'd be because Americans are scared of change and the same reason they elected George Bush twice
- ender7074, on 06/11/2008, -2/+0Or maybe they dont want the "change" that Obama is offering. I, personally, have no use for expanding government control over my life, pouring tons of money down the sinkhole that is the global warming farce, and having my taxes raised by around 20%. Maybe thats why people wont vote for him.
- skidooer, on 06/11/2008, -1/+3But McCain is balding. I've read before that the public would never vote in a president that didn't have a full head of hair. Then again, I've also heard they would never vote in a black person or a woman.

The most liberal leaning members on the Supreme Court don't own computers or answering machines because they can't figure them out.
The truth is that older people give up wanting to learn new technology once they hit 50.- haxsk8, on 06/11/2008, -7/+3Yes the truth.

- UglyBunny, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah its not the age, its the willingness to explore new technology vs. stay in your old ways. McCain's politics and actions have mirrored this attitude.
- pyg13, on 06/12/2008, -0/+4Yep, 62 and still going strong. Of course I don't spend all that much time on Digg, Slate, and Wired...it cuts into my CS:S time! ;-)
- agentsarahjane, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1My grandparents are McCain's age (in their 70's) and definitely use a computer. I know so many folks in their age group who can and DO use a computer just fine. That being said, the rest who do not use one don't have an interest in it ... it's understandable because it's not easy learning to use them long ago, however today's computers are more user friendly and don't require too much in the way of technical know-how and so many community colleges, community centers etc teach people how to use the computer. The avoidance in spite of these resources and advances looks to me that they do not want to have any part of what the world now offers and have no interest in trying anything new. Computers are a sign that the world has changed and McCain is trying to hold onto old fears and beliefs.
- haxsk8, on 06/11/2008, -7/+3Yes the truth.

- RRJackson, on 06/11/2008, -0/+16Have you ever seen, "A Streetcar Named Desire"? Know anything about Method Acting? Brando played Stanley Kowalski in the Broadway production of the play, where his acting drew the attention of everyone who saw the show. Later he starred in the movie and it went on to win four Academy Awards and establish Brando. That started a whole generation of actors dedicated to The Method, including people like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman. In a very real sense, you could say that "A Streetcar Named Desire" was indirectly responsible for movies not sucking in the 70's. Because those Method actors brought a sense of realism to their work that hadn't really been part of the Hollywood aesthetic before they came along.
Yeah...silly old man. He likes old people movies.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1A0p0F_iH8- Dumbledorito, on 06/11/2008, -5/+1So will it come as a complete shock to him that movies are now in color?

- badger500, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2And he sees Viva Zapata!, Streetcar Named Desire, and On the Waterfront as somehow comprising a "trilogy". Huh?
- RRJackson, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3Well, they're all Elia Kazan movies. I don't see a real connection there other than that, but all of Kazan's films from that era were kind of thematically intertwined, so maybe there's something I'm not picking up on. Kazan isn't exactly a popular name in Hollywood because he cooperated with HUAC in the 50's. In fact, the Academy honored him in 1999 and there were protests outside the venue. The WGA issued a letter condemning the Academy for honoring him. It actually got really ugly. He died a few years later and there were even people with signs and stuff outside his funeral. Despite that, his style is unmistakable. He almost always worked with method actors and he never seemed to fall back on convention.
One of my favorite movies of all time is a Kazan film called, "Wild River" that was finally released as a Region 2 DVD a couple of years ago, but still hasn't been released here in the States. It's about a TVA project to build a dam. Montgomery Clift plays a TVA official who comes to clear people off the land that will be flooded by the project. We see newsreel footage at the opening of the movie showing how violently the area floods every year, so the audience understands that the displacement to new homes is probably in the best interests of the locals. But we also see how hard it is on them to abandon their lives. Kazan doesn't give anyone an easy way out. Basically the movie just shows how progress and change tears up lives sometimes and you don't get to feel better by making the TVA man evil or the locals saints. In fact, my sympathies went back and forth through the whole thing the first time I saw it. Kazan's work was like that.

- jzuska, on 06/11/2008, -20/+5Great. I don't know how to use Obama's Learjet.
- Jareth86, on 06/11/2008, -0/+8Learjet? I don't have one of those! Why, Obama must be one of them damn elitists I've been hearing about!
- buddhistMonkey, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1One thing John McCain DOES know about is jets. He uses his wife Cindy's corporate jet for his campaign, even though he has to exploit a loophole in his own campaign finance reform legislation to do it. Of course, he put that loophole in there himself, so that he could skirt the letter of the law for his own benefit.

- saqer, on 06/11/2008, -35/+12who the ***** cares...
you people pretend that the president the one responsible for net neutrality and that it takes an experienced computer user to understand those types of issues...
buried- saqer, on 06/11/2008, -12/+5bury me..
it only goes to show...u diggers are just a bunch of sensationalists waiting for the next anti-[insert name, idea, etc] article to digg- MadCactus, on 06/11/2008, -2/+2You're free to add your own sensationalist articles to Digg, ya know. And while you're at it, you can add a completely inflammatory title to said article as well. YAY DIGG!
- dafunkmonster, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1Yea, I'm about ready to block digg from my router, effective until december.
- katieedwards, on 06/11/2008, -5/+6Net neutrality is not the only issue here. People are commenting on the fact that one of the presidential candidates is so out of touch with the times that he can't even operate a computer. The Internet has a huge presence in the media and the daily lives of the people. How many people do you know in high up positions anywhere that have no computer skills?
- saqer, on 06/11/2008, -4/+1u pretend as if it's too late for him to learn and that he can never learn...
- katieedwards, on 06/11/2008, -2/+2On his abundance of free time???
Just like my grandma did???
Just sayin' - HowboutBBQribs, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1I would expect the leader of the country to already possess these skills, not be learning them during his presidency :. Not having basic computer skills in this day in age is not acceptable unless he plans on being just a regular average joe senior. Not that all seniors are computer illiterate.

- owenkun, on 06/11/2008, -11/+20See, this is McCain showing us how he's not a namby-pamby ELITIST like Mr. Barack "Osama" Obama! ^_^

- NinjaPig, on 06/11/2008, -17/+11Maybe he uses Linux and doesn't want to admit it!!!
GIVE HIM A CHANCE GUYS!!- john2kx, on 06/11/2008, -5/+2title says he doesn't know how to use a computer..
One would think that would encompass all operating systems, no? - buenit, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8One would think you would pick up on sarcasm, no?
- coreyb42, on 06/11/2008, -2/+1Yeah, if he used Linux, he would have said the word "Microshaft" at least once, and spewed out a diatribe about open source being the best thing ever. I don't think I've ever met anyone who's ashamed of using Linux...
- HowboutBBQribs, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3Lol wow guys, he clearly was joking, note the obnoxious caps.
- john2kx, on 06/11/2008, -5/+2title says he doesn't know how to use a computer..
- twoifbysea, on 06/11/2008, -14/+2At least he can bowl more than a 30...

- Jareth86, on 06/11/2008, -14/+195Ron Paul uses windows. Where is your god now?
- Godlike, on 06/11/2008, -24/+15Ron Paul = Irrelevant.
- Callik, on 06/11/2008, -8/+36Well technically speaking he only said PC without mention of OS. So it could be linux! Really!

ummmmm nvm- stfucupcake, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2lol.
- dafunkmonster, on 06/11/2008, -2/+16No. Ron Paul uses windows. I would bet my life on it.
And no, using linux does not make you cool. If it did, you'd be getting laid right now instead of commenting on a digg video showing old white guys explaining their favorite hardware platform. - nebkiwi, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1dream on..
- imbob, on 06/11/2008, -1/+16becasue its free ;)
- ronaldst, on 06/11/2008, -2/+34McCain is a Mac user. I mean Apple told us, in their TV ads, that Mac users can't do video, plug cables and turn things on.
- dafunkmonster, on 06/11/2008, -3/+10I'm torn between digging you up or buring you.
But, you insulted mac users. I must therefore digg you up. - meishme, on 06/11/2008, -0/+7MACcain

- ssawyer06, on 06/11/2008, -12/+13Anyone who still supports Ron Paul doesn't realize that he doesn't believe in evolution.
- s1mph0ny, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4Yeah, that's what I look for in a president. Who gives a ***** about international politics, we should interview everyone over historical politics.
Mr. Obama, do you believe that Abraham Lincoln was justified in invading the south when their secession didn't involve slavery?
- s1mph0ny, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4Yeah, that's what I look for in a president. Who gives a ***** about international politics, we should interview everyone over historical politics.
- nebkiwi, on 06/11/2008, -0/+8I was under the impression that on digg, Steve Jobs is God.. ah well, my bad.
- ZeRux, on 06/11/2008, -4/+7He was...back in the days when digg was mainly a tech-news website. Today, digg is mainly a pro-Obama political website.
- DutchGuilder, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5Dugg for the Conan reference, whether intentional or not.

- mdmiamifl, on 06/11/2008, -23/+7Honestly, who cares if he can't use a computer?! Does that really matter in leading this country? Ask yourselves that.
- mabs0, on 06/11/2008, -2/+10Yes, it does matter. Think about it. The simplest job today requires that you have some minimal computer skills. With the complexity of today's world, can you imagine the President of US attempting to run the country using the good-old pen and paper style?
- Grova, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1Uh....are you serious?
Oh, I get it. That was sarcasm. - licnyc, on 06/11/2008, -1/+4Counter terrorist expert: President McCain- the terroris
