McCain: I Never Said That I Don’t Know Much About Economics
thinkprogress.org — This week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is traveling through Colombia, making a push for a free-trade agreement. In an interview with ABC this morning from Cartagena, McCain was asked about his now infamous statement that he doesn ’t understand economics well. McCain quickly interrupted the interviewer, denying he ever said this.

"Oh, I am gonna vote for a complete political moron just because he is in my political party." No sir, that just shows that you are a moron. Anyone who just blindly votes for their party is an idiot. You should see what each candidate has to offer and then vote for the best candidate. Anyone who only votes for their party all the time no matter the candidate is a fool.

- makenshin, on 07/02/2008, -2/+6Yes, no doubt he has said he is not very good with economics. His denial of this is a sign probably, that he realizes that foreign policy and war is much less important to American's at the moment than the economy. There are a lot of things I disagree with Obama on, but I feel between him and McCain, Obama would do a much better job on improving our economy. Though I am looking toward third parties more than these two, probably voting for Barr.

Say NO to Barack Obama, because NObama is the Wright choice!- solesoul, on 07/03/2008, -4/+10Wow...just wow. 2 things: 1) raising taxes is necessary to increase revenues so we can move out of recession, 2) if you're voting against Obama, please vote against him for reasons other than the non-controversy of Rev. Wright.
- Charlotte_Web, on 07/03/2008, -6/+6 Wow...just wow. You're going to solve a recession by taking even MORE money away from people and businesses? I don't think so.
- theaceoffire, on 07/03/2008, -2/+4Where do you think we are getting the $5000 a second for war now? We are borrowing it from China.
Where do you think we get money to pay them back? Taxes.
No matter who gets elected, the amount we owe will have to be paid back in taxes. - fulibs, on 07/03/2008, -6/+4How incredibly stupid can one person really be? Are you really that brainwashed by B.O. that taking more of your hard earned money is going to help you, or anyone else, in a recession?
I will try to ignore the fact that Rev. Wright is a racist anti-American that influenced B.O. for nearly 20 years of his life when I cast my vote. - tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -5/+4How exactly is giving more money to the federal government going to get us out of recession?
OK, I will vote against Obama because
1) His Social Security plan will bankrupt America and destroy the economy all by itself
2) His mandate to get the troops out of Iraq will squander all the gains made in the past year
3) His lack of experience will jeopardize our ability to deal with the Middle East and will most likely have a detrimental effect on the War on Terror
4) His plan to raise taxes in general will destroy the economy if his Social Security plan doesn't.
5) His Universal Healthcare plan will put people health in the hands of the feds, which are the same people who brought you Katrina response and the Iraq War.
And the list goes on. - chevyorange, on 07/03/2008, -3/+5Don't you know, theaceoffire, we can just keep spending and cutting taxes and everything will be just dandy! We're America!
I can't stand people posting that Obama is going to raise taxes. His plan is to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans. From what I understand middle and lower class will remain the same or get cuts. - stormkrow, on 07/03/2008, -4/+6tkstock:
Time for school so pay close attention:
1) He will tax the wealthiest 5% of the nation at a higher rate and do away with Bushco paydays for the uber-wealthy. So if you're uber-wealthy buck up otherwise that sounds lie the best idea I've heard in a long time
2) Squander? Gains? Chevron, BP, Exxon-Mobil or Total's gains? We went to war for Oil. PERIOD. Sorry that argument holds no water when held up to the light of truth.
3) Lack of experience? Let's see he whooped ass all over the Clinton machine and still has the exact same staff he started with. McShame has a revolving door staff of uber-loobbyists at his disposal; admittedly doesn't know anything about the economy, the internet, habeus corpus and has flip flopped more times in the recorded history of man that he belongs in the Guinness Book of World Records. Yeah that's real "experience". Experience enough to be a Wal-Mart greeter perhaps.
4) I guess you're a billionaire then? Right? Worried about losing that 4th house?
5) Bush brought us the Katrina response. Lay blame where blame is due. And to think that we're the greatest nation on earth and we haven't done what every other country on the planet has already done. Why? Because we have to protect those wonderful insurance companies.
Class is over.
I highly suggest you check the facts before posting your opinion; as it's just that an opinion with little merit and no footing.
Vote Republican-Kill a Soldier!!!! - tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -4/+3Jeez, stormkrow, could your filter be any more distorted? I would bury just for using "uber" way too much in your post, but I'll do it for other reasons. Now it's time to leave the pre-school and go to college:
1) Under the Obama SS plan, a person who makes $1 million per year will pay $93,000 more in taxes. Sounds great for you, right? Well, do you think that $93,000 just sits in a bank or under a mattress? No, it's invested in other companies which create jobs, spur innovations, etc. So, that's $93,000 taken out of the economy and put into social welfare. And that's just one person. You have to understand the impacts of his policies, not just the simplified "tax the rich is a good thing". It all sounds great in sound-bites until you understand the impacts.
2) If we leave Iraq precipitously, the Maliki govt will fail and sectarian violence will increase again. This will make it easier for jihadists to operate in the region and rally against the US. You can argue that the original intent of the war was oil, but now it's about saving our asses, because our enemies have flocked to the region.
3) So, you tout Obama's "experience" as running a good campaign against Clinton? Doesn't that just mean he's a good politician with a smooth line? The fact that he wants to talk with our enemies without precondition gives America the position of weakness. Sure, Ronald Reagan talked to our enemies, but from a position of strength.
4) I'm far from a billionaire, and far from being a millionaire, and I'm worried about losing my ONLY house.
5) You think Bush was solely responsible for the Katrina response? You're laughable. I don't even need to justify that with a response. I heard on NPR this morning - they interviewed someone from England about their socialized medicine. He said it was "pretty good" and he thought paying $10 / gallon on gas and 17.5% sales tax was worth it. So who is it costing more? There will be nothing more expensive than "free" healthcare.
Oh, and your "Vote Republican-Kill a Soldier!!!!" comment is right down at the level of your argument. Hopefully you'll learn to argue on an intelligent level sometime.
You need to grow up and learn to do some thinking for yourself rather than swallowing every piece of bread the democrats throw you.
Oh, going back to my question - how will taxing the rich take us out of recession? - ramiro, on 07/03/2008, -2/+4"raising taxes is necessary to increase revenues so we can move out of recession"
...
I can't think of anything to reply to such an incredibly imbecile statement as this (tax your way out of a recession). Obama voters are worse than I thought.
The only response you deserve is to get a good spanking with a dead cat until the poor feline meows. - tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3ramiro, that quote made my list: http://tomstock.wordpress.com/digg-posts/
- SpinningHead, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1Obama's tax cuts are bigger than McCain's for 90% of the population
http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/11/news/economy/candi ...- tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4Everyone gets a tax cut under McCain's plan.
Notice how the person making $2.9 million is taxed almost $1 million more under the Obama plan? Where is that $1 million coming from? It will come out of their investments in other companies which creates jobs and spurs innovation. Essentially, it will come out of the economy - and that's true for everyone who makes over $250K. The economy won't be able to handle that and would increase the need for social welfare.
People think the "evil rich people" have all this extra money in bank vaults at their house, when in fact it's invested in the economy. Take it away and you subtract it from the already-sour economy. Not a good plan at all. - SpinningHead, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1yes, bushenomics has served the economy so well. You've described supply-side economics. It didn't work for Hoover and it didn't work for Bush. People invest because of company revenues which come from people at the bottom spending money.
- chaosblade77, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0@tkstock
I can't say I know too terribly much about economics, but it sounds like that argument works against itself. Yes, the money is being pulled from our economy to pay off our country's debts, which in turn should increase the value of the dollar again right? That would benefit people just as much as having more money in the end, since the price of things like gas would fall, causing other products that are going up in price due to increased transportation charges to also decrease.
Besides, isn't it better to take from the people with more money than the people with less money? Would you rather the people who make under $250k (AKA the vast majority) get those tax increases, and have even less money going into those companies that the wealthy have money invested in?
That's how I see it at least.
- tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4Everyone gets a tax cut under McCain's plan.

- tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1That's the funny thing - do you think McCain, or Obama would be making economic policies? No, it will be their surrogates who have expertise in that area.
- CaptainShaun, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Additionally, isn't most of this stuff handled by congress? I'm not American, but my understanding is that congress drafts legislature, not the executive. It is also my understanding that the president's only direct involvement in the legislative procedure is the ability to veto a bill.
- tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1The White House can also draft legislation to be passed on to Congress, but I don't think that's the usual route. Normally they get someone in Congress to draft it, I think.

At least McCain admitted that he's an idiot when it comes to economics. Ron Paul supporters think they have it all figured out based on some youtube videos that explain how the time value of money is a global conspiracy. But you are living in the matrix.

Another president who if not for the powerful influence of his family would not even qualify for a job in the food service industry beyond that of picking vegetables some corporate farm. I would think that after two terms of Bush we would all recognize the need for a leader that can read above a 5th grade level.
- ohpiddle, on 07/03/2008, -5/+4Where was the footage of McCain saying that he was not strong on economics? The whole footage. Robin really had nothing to say to McCain after his comment, no follow up questions, nothing at all. - headinthesand, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5So lets just go ahead and elect John McCain so that we can be embarrassed four to eight more years that he is our leader and every time he makes a public speech some ***** flys out of his mouth. Just as long as Neo-Cons have there faith in God that John McCain won't start WWIII. Wake up people.... Wake up....
- zephyear, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1i don't mccain would live for 8 more years
- tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2In all fairness (not that you'll care), he didn't say he didn't know much about it, he said he didn't know as much as he should about it.
You can know a lot about something and still feel that you don't know enough about it. - obamayomama, on 07/03/2008, -6/+2Just like the "100 years" comment, taken out of context, skewed and twisted to serve the left's agenda. It's funny how these posts rail against McCain for being disingenuous while the whole premise of this article is so. And for your information, headinthesand, you and your like minded friends that use the term "Neo-Con" need to do a little research and understand that it was coined and refers to ex-hippies from the 60's that saw the error of their ways and became conservatives. It was never a blanket term for conservatives (hence the prefix.) I guess it sounds cool and does a good job demeaning those you don't agree with, though, so it serves your purpose, huh?
- Ouhei, on 07/03/2008, -2/+5What exactly is taken out of context about saying he doesn't know much about economics to saying he is strong on economics and never said he was weak on it?
How is there any other way to take that? Had he said, I now know more about economics than before because I've been studying up, then you MIGHT believe him. But he's denying he ever said it.- obamayomama, on 07/03/2008, -3/+2He said that he doesn't know much about economics RELATIVE to what he knows about foreign affairs. That doesn't necessarily mean that he's ignorant on the subject.
- tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2FTA: “The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should,”
Albert Einstein may have thought he didn't know as much about theoretical physics as he thought he should - it doesn't mean he didn't know a lot about it.
- Ouhei, on 07/03/2008, -2/+5What exactly is taken out of context about saying he doesn't know much about economics to saying he is strong on economics and never said he was weak on it?
- tcpik, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5the comments on that site are great.
“The best thing about Alzheimer’s is you get to hide your own Easter eggs.” –John McCain, September 1999
LOL- obamayomama, on 07/03/2008, -3/+0I can't find the Alzheimer's quote you cite anywhere... guess you just make ***** up as you go along, huh? *****.
- tcpik, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1comment #18 dick head.
- obamayomama, on 07/03/2008, -1/+0Oh OK, then that makes it true... if you were any dumber you'd have to be watered twice a week.

- x2wenty4x, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7Welcome to a world with Youtube McCain. Your BS flip flopping and contradictions won't go unnoticed.
- bshock, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1And we never said that McSame knew a lot of about honesty.
- tkstock, on 07/03/2008, -3/+1Obama's plan for Social Security:
Under the Obama SS plan, a person who makes $1 million per year will pay $93,000 more in taxes. Sounds great for you, right?
Well, do you think that $93,000 just sits in a bank or under a mattress? No, it's invested in other companies which create jobs, spur innovations, etc. So, that's $93,000 taken out of the economy and put into social welfare. And that's just one person. Everyone who makes over $250K / year will be significantly impacted. That's a LOT of people and a LOT of money coming out of the economy.
You have to understand the impacts of his policies, not just the simplified "tax the rich is a good thing". It all sounds great in sound-bites until you understand the impacts.
I think Obama could learn a few things from McCain on the economy. - banderwocky, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2To funny! Flat out blatant lie.
- obamayomama, on 07/03/2008, -1/+0To, too and two. Learn them.
- carterartist, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1wow. that was taken out of context? He said what now?
I think you fail to see how the man made a point blank statement, then denies over and over that he ever said it.
That was the point of all this, not the fact that he's an idiot when it comes to economics, we only need to see how bankrupt his campaign is to learn that. - aookay, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0Pops needs to take his memory pills
- ragingflamerboy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1okay, i'm all anti-McCain,. however, he's going to be the one to get in office because:
a: america is stupid.
b: see a.
Now that being said, and I'm an obama-lover. (Jus' love me some black men!) - this was taken outta context. He never said that he doesn't know much about econom nom nom nom. He said he didn't know as much as he should. wtf people. - djdingo, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1That's what I don't understand about McCain, he says one thing then says the other but completely denies ever saying the first thing to begin with. Um...hello? Every single thing you say in public is most likely recorded and it can be found within a matter of minutes on the Internet.
I've seen the video where McCain says he doesn't know anything about economics. Sounds like he needs to see it himself.
Don't forget, McCain doesn't even know how to use a computer!- BlacklabelSAR, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Being computer illiterate is the new Amish.
