McCain: Iraq Is ‘A Peaceful And Stable Country Now’
thinkprogress.org — Today, Time Magazine published an interview with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) that it conducted aboard McCain ’s campaign airplane. Reporters James Carney and Michael Scherer described McCain as “prickly” and “at times, abrasive” during the course of the interview. Carney and Scherer noted to McCain that the Iraqi government is calling for a deadline

- rotundo, on 10/05/2008, -2/+10Pardon my French, er "Freedom", but what McCain said here is ***** disgusting. Have the goddamn decency to admit that Iraq is still a mess, man. Yes, violence is down from it's incendiary 2006/2007 peak. It is still absolutely awful. It's similar to 2004/2005 violence levels. Just because it got momentarily worse doesn't make the current situation "good".

We won't know the final outcome of the Iraq war -- whether it was worth it or not -- for a decade. My bet is that it wasn't worth it.
I think McCain is still caught up in wanting to undo Vietnam. He wants the glory of the WWII allies. What he doesn't understand is that some wars, the kind we've been getting into for the past couple decades, you can't "win". Even if Iraq violence is eventually under control and the country recovers (maybe in a decade?), we didn't "win" anything. We lost, they lost. The only time you can win a war is when you have a clear aggressor and they surrender. That was not the case here. No number of dead Iraqis is going to change that. There can be no military "win" here for the US. We will have gained nothing.- siszam, on 10/05/2008, -1/+5I know it wasn't "worth it" now. I knew it when I watched our "shock and awe" killing people on tv and when the first American was put in harms way.
- lajaw, on 10/05/2008, -8/+5Compared to Chicago and DC, he is very much correct.

@@@@
America has always been particularly violent - more murders and a higher rate of murders than any of the Western, industrialized countries. This violence in America accelerated with the availability of cheap hand-guns.
BTW: I have not heard of any car-bombings or mortar attacks in either Chicago or D.C. as there are, weekly, in Baghdad... - bobbarkerbilly, on 10/05/2008, -0/+7You had better actually read the article that makes the charge you're using. That article does not include Iraqi civilians.
http://cbs2chicago.com/local/chicago.summer.shooti ...
Do you really stand behind an article that doesn't count Iraqi civilians as deaths that count? - siszam, on 10/05/2008, -3/+4Ralph, I don't know about Chicago but hand guns have been banned in DC for a while. When citizens are denied their right to be armed then criminals take over. You can't blame violence on guns when they aren't allowed. Do the research. Cities with more gun restrictions have higher crime.
- bobbarkerbilly, on 10/05/2008, -1/+5siszam,
Did it ever cross your mind that maybe more gun restrictions were put into those cities because of the ALREADY high crime rate. - Ralphdraw3, on 10/05/2008, -2/+2When citizens are denied their right to be armed then criminals take over. You can't
@@@@@
This is NRA mythology. I am talking about handguns not hunting guns or other non-concealable weapons.
Why are there so many murders, crimes and shootings in the United States, if an "armed" society - such as ours, is a safe society???
BTW NRA stands for National RIFLE Association, not National Handgun Association...
- Ralphdraw3, on 10/05/2008, -2/+7Compared to Chicago and DC, he is very much correct.

Dude, I like animals, but I also like pork tenderloin sandwiches and suede. When you're a little kid you can imagine a world where everyone lives some kind of Brady Bunch life and nobody ever has to be unhappy. In the real world we either do the things that will provide for our own or we perish. When I was a kid this country had around 6% of the world's population and used 65% of the world's resources. The only way to maintain ratios of prosperity like that (which we haven't been able to do) is to walk on other people to exploit their resources. And in the process of doing that we make enemies and so we have to put them down, too. Either man up, move somewhere else or get out of the way. Because if you're an American you have to at least tacitly acknowledge what that means.

The bomber in Baghdad al-Jadida blew himself up by the roadside
Suicide bombers have struck near two Shia mosques in Baghdad, killing at least 20 people and wounding another 54, Iraqi security officials have said.
The attacks came as worshippers left the mosques after prayers for Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan.
Ten people died in a suicide bombing in the Zafaraniya district, while another 10 were killed in Baghdad al-Jadida.
Six other people from one family died when gunmen opened fire on a minibus in Baquba, north of Baghdad, police said.

Find me something that suggests that we are indeed deliberately and systematically killing every Iraqi. We are fighting an unpopular war, and in war noncombatants get killed. There are people in each branch of the ruling party who are horrible, and people who are wonderful, and most people are somewhere in between. This isn't a Republican versus Democrat problem (in fact, very few problems are). This is a republic versus empire problem. The citizens want a republic, where our rights are respected and government is limited by law. Our "rulers" want an empire, where they have absolute power. As long as we let them distract us with this right versus left nonsense, we won't notice the freedom versus tyranny reality.
- jimbo92107, on 10/05/2008, -3/+15Peaceful and stable? The best way for John McCain to verify his claim would be to walk through Baghdad alone and ask some Iraqis.
- zaneperry, on 10/05/2008, -4/+3Aug 28th is hardly today. This already made it to the front page 38 Days ago.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) = Sen. John McCain C(R-AZ)Y - SaperKain, on 10/05/2008, -2/+12Throw the republican thugs out of office. All of the them. John McCain doesn’t even deserve his senate seat for this *****.
- Cosmo96, on 10/05/2008, -25/+2Probably about as safe as Chicago........125 shot dead in Chicago over summer, total is about double the U.S. troop death toll in Iraq for the same time period.

This is right in the Messiah Obama's back yard!- Tracknod, on 10/05/2008, -0/+14All for another FAILED war... the war on drugs :(
- bobbarkerbilly, on 10/05/2008, -0/+11So Iraqi civilian deaths don't count? You're the lowest of the lowest pond scum.
- siszam, on 10/05/2008, -2/+8Gun control creates unarmed victims. But how does the violence in Chicago make McCain right or the illegal occupation justified? Your warped Republican reasoning fails.
- FairNUnBalanced, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4Any other racial groups not counting as human beings?
Unbelievable.- phroztbyt3, on 10/05/2008, -1/+1Cosmo.. technically you just proved that Obama has had more military experience than Mccain... if you have a comment like that. He's been battling in wars since he was a pup ;)...
Wheres your Maverick now.. ass.

- wherearemymeds, on 10/05/2008, -2/+17The last tally I saw (about 2 wks ago) for Iraqi CIVILIANS killed was over 1,200,000.
Mccain, what the hell is it with you and holding grudges at any cost? Especially at an entire country's cost??
Would you be willing to stake your own wealth, your own children, your own wife, money, homes, etc...on this? Because sir, you tell at least three lies every time you open your mouth. And for all your 'poor me' outrage at the media, you seem to use it as a looped sound bite.
Well, we hear you. Loud and clear.
YOU SUCK.
YOU LIE.
YOU'RE STUPID.
YOU'RE WRONG.
YOU ARE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN GREED AND IMMATURITY ARE BRED INTO A SINGLE PERSON OR PLATFORM.
AND YOU WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT. - HumanNouveau, on 10/05/2008, -2/+8Relearning the lessons of wars past:
"They make a desert and call it peace." Tacitus, attributed to British chieftan Calgacus.
"One more victory like this and we're ruined." Pyrrhus of a high-cost victory over Rome.
Colmunist Eric Margolis recalls both and suggests that Obama should borrow some of this ancient insight for his defense against the Republican spin. - BlueAyez, on 10/05/2008, -1/+7Well ... there he goes again.
- bonlebon, on 10/05/2008, -1/+9If McCain's statement is true. Why he doesn't show in the middle of Baghdad by himself with no bodyguards?
He should watch 60 minutes more often. It's the proper show for people his age. "Americans are being target of attacks in Iraq" or whatever that Mr. Big General said. - ertw1, on 10/05/2008, -1/+8Mission Accomplished Mr.McCain, if you repeat it often enough does it become truth?
