McCain Linked to Right-Wing, Nazi-Backed Death Squads
cbsnews.com — GOP nominee John McCain has past connections to a private group that supplied aid to guerrillas seeking to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua in the Iran-Contra affair. The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America.

Obama/Biden 08!- ultimatekiwi, on 10/08/2008, -14/+6Learning about McCain's past doesn't make him a more dangerous person, it just gives voters a more complete picture of the candidate, and shows them why he could be considered dangerous if (haha, yeah right) he was elected president. It's just the perception of danger-level that changes.

- citizen782, on 10/08/2008, -12/+16This is a sensationalist headline that removes credibility from all those who support it. The first comment on this thread should have been to denounce the article and the person who posted it. And I am an Obama supporter. Don't stoop to their level by spewing words like "Nazi" and "Terrorist".
- bbtweb, on 10/08/2008, -3/+15I actually agree with you. We don't need these stories. McCain did a good enough job last night acting like a pompous ass with his snide remarks and showed America that he has no real ideas, just the same canned responses over and over again "my friends"
- Dejacque, on 10/08/2008, -10/+3That may be the case, but I really can't imagine that this headline is going to sway any votes on Digg. Everyone's had their votes telegraphed for months now.
- nycmac247, on 10/08/2008, -1/+24you might want to learn more about the history of Central America; I know it might seem over the top but they really are / were Nazis and terrorists. Also, death squads (again, believe it or not) are used by many Latin American governments. Really.

FTA: "The council created by retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub was the U.S. chapter of the World Anti-Communist League, an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America."
Miss that part? - cdahlkvist, on 10/08/2008, -9/+4Obama linked to Nazi party!
Yep, it's true. He once owned a Volkswagen and we all know where Volkswagens came from.
See how far-fetched that is? You liberals will slant things any way you can to make it sound horrible and create ties to some terrible past incident. - fluoro, on 10/08/2008, -3/+9"See how far-fetched that is? You liberals will slant things any way you can to make it sound horrible and create ties to some terrible past incident."
Hold on a minute. Palin is the most recent of many to imply that Obama is a terrorist because he is 'linked' to William Ayers by first serving on a board for a charity fund raiser. And now that someone says McCain is 'linked' to support of death squads and Iran-Contra because he served on the board for several years of an organization that was strongly involved in Iran-Contra, you're saying that "you liberals" are slanting things? Get a ***** grip, dude. - thecarpe, on 10/08/2008, -3/+3[insert candidate that you already didn't like] is liked to Satan himself, has killed babies, has kicked puppies, and has slapped yo momma.

- Jlaugh, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2@omnithought
The Nazi's really have been involved in a bunch of cold war history, they really did work for the French in Indochina, they really did work for NATO, they really did work at NASA, they really did work with the ARMY, CIA, etc., they really did escape with billions in looted war booty. They really are still involved in our lives.
- mossrockss, on 10/08/2008, -11/+4Oh brother.
IBM supplied computers to the Nazis. I don't see a sensationalist headline about that on digg's front page.
That was decades ago. Things change. This is BS.- treehugger87, on 10/08/2008, -2/+4Have they changed all that much? U.S. Corporations still do whatever they can to make money, regardless of if it is ethical, moral, good for their country or good for the world.
- Sumtin2Say, on 10/08/2008, -1/+5"That was decades ago. Things change. This is BS."
I just figured that was the reaction the article was attempting to bring about. Then the person with the reaction might make the realization that the same is true for the Obama/Ayers connection. It is probably naive of me to assume anyone finding this attack unfair would find the same to be true for the attack on Obama. It is probably also naive of me to assume that was the intent of the story. - fluoro, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6IBM is also a faceless corporation whose ownership and directorship has changed hands many times since then. It's harder to apply moral standards to a company like than than it is to apply moral standards to a single individual. IBM is essentially a completely different company now, but happens to have the same name. McCain is not a completely different person than he was in the mid 80s.
- gridity, on 10/08/2008, -2/+7I am sure Palin is regretting opening this "guilt by association" can of worms. If she's not, you can bet McCain is.

I really get tired of 'Nazi' being used almost ubiquitously as an adjective. Baaahhhhhh - JenniferInMO, on 10/07/2008, -21/+93It seems that McCain doesn't have very good judgment in who he "pals around with." In contrast to Obama's 3 tangental associations, and in contrast to Obama's open condemnation of these 3 men's actions McCain has a lifetime record of picking those who are corrupt and unethical all in an attempt to gain power. All McCain has ever wanted was to best his grandfather and father by becoming President. He admits this in one of his books. He has never openly denounced Keating, rather he talks about what a tough time it was for him when he was exposed. He doesn't even acknowledge many of his extreme relationships and others, like Hagee and Gramm he actually embraces because they can help him with his campaigns. McCain, after being in trouble with corrupt bankers has over 100 lobbyists on his campaign payroll who have represented financial clients. He just can't get away from these people!

That didn't sound like news to me. For some reason, I'm not surprised one bit.
"I wonder why" *play Incubus - Magic Medicine*- Suricou, on 10/08/2008, -4/+16It's interesting that both left and right try to say the nazis are on the other side.
Those on the left look at the nazis, and see moral crusaders with a strong christian influence, extreme homophobia, some of the strictest anti-abortion laws in europe (other than that exception for jews), and calls to support the 'traditional family' and for women to not enter the workforce. Clearly, the nazis were to the far right.
Those on the right though will look at the nazis, and see a collectivist ideology and an all-controlling government micromanaging economic affairs and personal life. Clearly, the nazis were to the far left.
In truth, they just don't fit on the modern spectrum. They are sort of far-left economically, super-extreme-right socially, unclassifyable politically, and with a level of cult-like fanaticism that defies analysis.- GordonFree, on 10/08/2008, -2/+8I'd say the right (republican, neoconservative), despite claiming to believe in capitalism and free market without truly knowing what that even means, is a lot closer to the adopted behavior of fascism. You know why?
Exactly because of the cult-like fanaticism that defies analysis, like you said. Yes, there are pro-Obama people that are quite dumb, but the large majority is people who know about the issues and believe we need a more intelligent president for a positive change.
Republicans? Well... everytime I talk to one I don't really see substance in the argumentations - it's usually because they "heard" McCain has a "track record", and they "don't trust" Obama (usually when they can't explain why it's racial profiling). When you try to argument back, they get aggressive and call YOU stupid and brainwashed (when it's really them). Sounds like Nazism to me. - thePuck77, on 10/08/2008, -3/+2Very well put, @Suricou
- oldhick, on 10/08/2008, -3/+1Just so you're not speculating and you can actually put some education into an argument...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_spectrum - Kizilbash, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1In truth, as everyone who studied the least bit of European history knows, the Nazis were on the extreme Right. Just like the Italian Fascists and the Spanish Phalangists that they were allied to. The Left Wing opposite were the Communists who fought them in Germany, in Italy and in Spain before WWII and all over Europe during WWII.
- GordonFree, on 10/08/2008, -2/+8I'd say the right (republican, neoconservative), despite claiming to believe in capitalism and free market without truly knowing what that even means, is a lot closer to the adopted behavior of fascism. You know why?
- Azerael, on 10/08/2008, -1/+11Suricou, think of the right/left system not so much as a straight line but a circle folding back in on itself. On one side you have moderate rationalism, and on the other side you have extreme ideological purism.
Assuming you start from the the side opposite the 'extreme' (which would be the 'centre' in the traditional left/right measure), you can take the left path or the right path. These are different journeys, but ultimately end up in the same place. The Nazis took the right path, the USSR took the left, but they both ultimately turned into the same thing.
That is why people should be wary of identifying soully with 'left' or 'right' ideologies, as the freest, most prosperous societies have taken elements from both sides.- GordonFree, on 10/08/2008, -2/+10I agree.
The problem with America is leaning too much to the right in general. Even Obama is not really left, he's "right"... but closer to the center.
Americans have spent the last centuries living with what's technically a far right society, and because of that, at this point the Daily Kos is more "fair and balanced" than Fox News. People were already misguided before, not just now. - AugustusOsari, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1They didn't end up as the same thing at all. The economies were very, very different.
The problem is that they were both totalitarian, so they were socially the same.
- GordonFree, on 10/08/2008, -2/+10I agree.
- Azerael, on 10/08/2008, -4/+6Suricou, if you look at the left-right spectrum as a circle, and not a straight line, the Nazis fit. On one side of circle, you have what would be the 'centre' of the traditional left-right scale, which is a kind of moderate rationalism, cherry picking the best parts from both sides. On the other end of the circle you have extreme ideological purity, which can only really be enforced through authoritarian means. You can take the left path, or the right path, but the end result is the same. The Nazis went to the right, the USSR to the left, but they both became disturbingly alike.
This is why people should be weary of aligning themselves with either 'left' or 'right', as enforced purity of ideology is what made the USSR and Nazi Germany rather unpleasant places to exist.- Azerael, on 10/08/2008, -5/+1Okay, uh... it didn't look like the first one posted. Why? Because it works. This is a case where fire has to be fought with fire.
If both campaigns, especially McCain's, had kept their promise to keep it respectful we wouldn't even be here. That's the sad part. - flannerus, on 10/08/2008, -4/+1ooooooh god its soooo lowwww...partisan liiiiiiiiineeesss....

However, if Obama had even the remotest and most dubious of connections to nazi death squads, I have no doubt that McCain would be shouting it from the rooftops with great exageration - and, when the claims are shown to be highly doubtful, Palin would take over with a bit of "Well, 'they' say Obama isn't a nazi..." and her widely-publicised wink.
Politics is a dirty game. McCain is the second dirtiest candidate we have seen in the 2008 runup, after Hillary.- ZenMojo, on 10/08/2008, -1/+9Indirect? Hitler gave public credit to Carl Marx as his inspiration.
Only fools still pretend Nazis and socialist/communists are opposite ends of the political spectrum.
Only very minor differences in the application of suppression and despotism between them.
From the French Rev through USSR, China, Pol Pot, NK, it's all the same.
1) Take our free speech (PC speech),
2) take control of the economy,
3) make us dependent on the state (soc med),

Nearly every anti-communist group in the twentieth century had a few nazis on board ( and so did the communists themselves, who hired nazis freely provided they recanted ).
At the 17th Annual WACL Conference held in San Diego, California, John K. Singlaub, president of the WACL's US chapter, read a letter from President Ronald Reagan which said in part, "The World Anti-Communist League has long played a leadership role in drawing attention to the gallant struggle now being waged by the true freedom fighters of our day. - spartan777, on 10/08/2008, -6/+20actually the US government was heavily involved in supporting Neo-Nazi resistance movements and regimes throughout the world. Look at the Greek civil war, Chile and Pinochet, and so on. The US started supporting Fascist and Neo-Nazi groups immedeatly after the end of WWII. To those leaders, Nazis were preferred over socialists. Nazis would merely slaughter masses of their own people (again, go back to Pinochet), but socialists were far worse, they threatened to cause economic, social and political change around the world by way of a good example (others call it the "Domino Effect"). This is far bigger than just Mccain, and this all has been known for some time.

There's a distance between the two men that belies their shared experience in North Vietnam — call it an honor gap. Like many American POWs, McCain broke down under torture and offered a "confession" to his North Vietnamese captors. Dramesi, in contrast, attempted two daring escapes. For the second he was brutalized for a month with daily torture sessions that nearly killed him. His partner in the escape, Lt. Col. Ed Atterberry, didn't survive the mistreatment. But Dramesi never said a disloyal word, and for his heroism was awarded two Air Force Crosses, one of the service's highest distinctions. McCain would later hail him as "one of the toughest guys I've ever met."
Dramesi, who went on to serve as chief war planner for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and commander of a wing of the Strategic Air Command, was not surprised. "McCain says his life changed while he was in Vietnam, and he is now a different man," Dramesi says today. "But he's still the undisciplined, spoiled brat that he was when he went in."
So if the price is right Dramesi will stick by his allegiances, Why are there so few men of substance in politics? They are lawyers or assholes usually. Both are not worth inviting into your home...

- TheDarkTrumpet, on 10/08/2008, -2/+2You're right, hexium, it doesn't say anything about you.
The problem is really that both sides are trying to dig up old, very loose ties, to stuff. It started with the MCCain group (my guess mostly responsible is Pallin, she seems to be out for blood right now), and is now being fired back from the Obama group.
I feel that really both ties are fairly loose, and shouldn't be such a big deal. People change over time, and McCain may not believe in this as he did in the past. The same is true for Obama and his loose ties to some more "extremists"
It's pretty much a mud fight right now, but you're right - loose ties and associations shouldn't really imply what the person believes in.

Every mainstream report I've seen so far has it either a draw or a small Obama victory, but you saw him "Hit it out of the park".- amightywind, on 10/08/2008, -6/+6If you democrats want to start your end zone dance while you are still at the 40 yard line, that is an advantage we can accept. What you call denial, I called resolution - for freedom, low taxes, prosperity.
- Dawnrazor, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3And you're starting your celebration at 3rd and long on your own 20 yard line.
Or to make another bad football analogy, Obama just needs to run out the clock, McCain needs to get the ball back and pull off a massive Hail Mary.
- treehugger87, on 10/08/2008, -6/+6I love your enthusiasm. I hope you will come to understand the angst that those of us who felt the 2000 election was stolen have felt for the past 8 years.
- enki25, on 10/08/2008, -3/+5You are not speaking the same English the rest of us are. That may explain why you are confused.
- AugustusOsari, on 10/08/2008, -1/+1The Founding Fathers included anarchists, not fascists. Try again?

- lazerus9, on 10/08/2008, -21/+6Obama hates white people.
- treehugger87, on 10/08/2008, -3/+2“So Sambo beat the bitch!”
- kmarble, on 10/08/2008, -16/+3Sour grapes folks... tenuous at best.
- enki25, on 10/08/2008, -4/+3Yeah Democrats are so bitter that they have won every debate and are 8+ points ahead in national polls.
- gnocchi1442, on 10/08/2008, -2/+4Um... sour grapes are for losers, braintrust. I suspect you'll be more familiar with that term come Nov 4th.
- rlh1, on 10/08/2008, -15/+8Pro Nazi
or
Pro Communist
Which group to support.
Hard to decide.
- enki25, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6How about, oh I don't know, neither?
- chamberlanderic, on 10/08/2008, -5/+2Hate Non-whites
or
Everybody in misery - AugustusOsari, on 10/08/2008, -1/+1Not at all. The appropriate choice is obviously the communist.
- TigerStar337, on 10/08/2008, -22/+16The Republican KKK rallies started last week. I am waiting for McCain to call Barack a "N*gger".
That One/Biden '08/'12- nirav72, on 10/08/2008, -6/+11Actually , it might be Palin who makes that mistake one day. I wouldn't be surprise if a mic is left on somewhere or she just happens to utter it during a unscripted speech..the airhead that she is.
She has been known to do things like that in the past. Not sure if this is true - http://tinyurl.com/6zetn4- ZenMojo, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4As a screenwriter, I have to say that this is the inevitable end to the story. You heard it here first.
Palin's got an army and as far as she's concerned she's taking the army with her. Don't doubt she's going to give the nutjobs what they want.

- Sfenton, on 10/08/2008, -4/+4How the ***** do you have positive diggs?

- stealthc, on 10/08/2008, -12/+18It's called the Republican Party.
- tommy614, on 10/08/2008, -3/+2You love ignorance dont you? Drop by school sometime, maybe you will actually learn something about how the world works. Christ. Republicans are NOT demons. Shocker, i know...
- AugustusOsari, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Of course they're not demons.
They're Prayer Warriors.
It just happens to be that the two are equally bad.
- AugustusOsari, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Of course they're not demons.

- roho76, on 10/08/2008, -7/+16This doesn't surprise me at all. I have always wondered how this guy can go to an AIPAC conference and praise Israel then make a stop over a pastor Hagee's shindigg and praise him after he has said stuff like "Hitler was doing Gods work." He is playing both sides of the fence right in front of everybodies faces and nobody realizes this? WTF? Short of shooting these guys in the face , nothing will ever change. They give the American people just enough cheese to make it till the next incident then follow that up with somemore cheese to get them through till the next one. Rinse and Repeat.
- stealthc, on 10/08/2008, -14/+2Vote Chuck Baldwin. He doesn't want to kill black people OR rob from white people. He's the best of both worlds!
- dethknite11, on 10/08/2008, -18/+6This is just silly to imply... this man not only served American armed forces for most of his life, but was a POW as well. And when offered the chance to be sent back to America before his other POW buddies... he declined stating that they deserved it more than him. This man has given more than any one of you cheap shooters on here and liberal cheap shooters in the media, some whom have fled to canada and elsewhere just to get out of the draft. Grow a pair... like McCain.
As for supporting terroristic regimes... Barack Hussein Obama not only helped the President of Kenya raise financial support for his campaign, but also supported this vile man who killed and threatened hundreds of thousands of Kenyans just to get into office. AND then he went further to promise this vile man more financial support and deals when he becomes president.
What is wrong with this picture... Obama is supporting Muslims, extremists, and people who hate America... says he wants to sit down to tea with the worst dictators in the world, and then turns around and says he wants to lead this great country of America! BS!!!!! I AM NOT BUYING IT FOR A SECOND!!!- julesbond007, on 10/08/2008, -3/+6Let me get this straight...you're just an idiot. What you're saying is that Obama is riskier because he didn't serve in the armed forces....that's a retarded argument...Clinton didn't serve yet he was one of the greatest president ever.
Obama was 8 years old when Ayers did what he did, but now we want to blame Obama....The tide is just turning against McCain because he and Palin started all this. Whatever is uncovered about McCain now is fair game. I hope Obama cashes on this opportunity. - fiatjustitia, on 10/08/2008, -2/+6"says he wants to sit down to tea with the worst dictators in the world"
It's called diplomacy. You know, that thing that world leaders kinda have to do so they can prevent going to war?
"Obama is supporting Muslims"
Welcome to America, we have freedom of religion here. Get used to it. - TheDarkTrumpet, on 10/08/2008, -3/+4There's a lot of focus on McCain's military career. Keep in mind, that people join the military for different reasons - and some people not for honorable ones. I'm not saying that McCain is dishonorable - I think his POW experience says a lot. What I am saying, though is that it shouldn't be the end-all reason for his qualifications for being president - either for good for bad.
This same argument is used in terms of religion, which I hope to kinda bring up. Some people will make the association that if someone is a good person, therefore they are Christian. In other words, there's a prerequisite of being Christian to being a good person. There are a number of people in history, and who I know even now, who serve other people who aren't Christian.
This is similar to the whole argument on military experience. Just because someone has experience in the military doesn't make them a good president. Furthermore the argument of no military experience making a poor president is also bad.
McCain's military experience should weigh in some, but shouldn't be the only factor - nor should military experience make him immune to having done anything "questionable" as well.
- julesbond007, on 10/08/2008, -3/+6Let me get this straight...you're just an idiot. What you're saying is that Obama is riskier because he didn't serve in the armed forces....that's a retarded argument...Clinton didn't serve yet he was one of the greatest president ever.
- klooper, on 10/08/2008, -5/+27I think that McCain's support of an anti-semetic extremist group is definitely newsworthy, even harkening back to 1984. People change, sure. But if it's legitimate for the McCain campaign to dredge up Obama associations with a University of Chicago professor who was a radical when Obama was eight years old, then supporting a group that was rabidly anti-semetic AT THE TIME YOU SUPPORTED THEM is, I think, fair game.
- bularasa, on 10/08/2008, -13/+9Don't any of you follow the news? Mcain was not a hero, all of the POW's were offered the chance to leave but they would have to denounce America first. None of the men took the deal.
Mcain is a dangerous man, along with Betty Boop this Country would be done, broke and destroyed. Obama may not be perfect and yes he is black but I believe he loves this country and we would be safer under his rule.- caborobo, on 10/08/2008, -3/+6Under his rule? I'm not under anyone's ***** rule.
- MWeather, on 10/08/2008, -4/+5Keep telling yourself that.
- tommy614, on 10/08/2008, -2/+1Actually, you would be under Obama's rule due to his tendencies to lean towards socialism. Buy into the hype and digg me down, or look at his policies and realize how much government will take over once he is president.
- AugustusOsari, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Anarchism is usually viewed as a movement of the radical left.
I hardly think you can say the government is in control of an anarchist society...
- wpc33, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4"Obama may not be perfect and yes he is black but-"
You say black like it's a bad thing. Go ***** yourself. - salter84, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3who cares if he is black. white orange,green,pink,beige,purple,blue..... Ok well if you are purple I'm not so sure..
u sir are a ***** douche cake. why in the name of ***** christ on a crutch would you bring up the color of his skin?
how about you debate that Obama is more American then McCain who was born in friggen Panama - happytrees, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1white supremacists for obama!
