McCain Tests The Waters Of Race As Campaign Issue
huffingtonpost.com — As several reports have pointed out, McCain's newly announced support for Arizona's anti-affirmative action ballot initiative over the weekend represents a reversal from ten years ago, when he called a similar effort "divisive."

Not even sure how this is testing the waters?
Look Biased by race = racism.
Affirmative action = biased by race = Racist
End of story. If schools want to do things right, do it by lack of income and demographics, NOT RACE!
You can't fight racism by being racist.- pintomp3, on 07/29/2008, -8/+4affirmative action is racist? is that why martin luther king started the first program?
King supported affirmative action-type programs because he never confused the dream with American reality. As he put it, "A society that has done something special against the Negro for hundreds of years must now do something special for the Negro" to compete on a just and equal basis (quoted in Let the Trumpet Sound, by Stephen Oates).
http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1292 - twomeyw23334, on 07/29/2008, -3/+9jabberwolf uses definitions of English words = logical
pintomp3 trying to debunk jabberwolf by saying 'martin luther king agrees with me' = fail
MLK was also a womanizer, does that make womanizing justifiable?
And if he truly meant "compete on a just and equal basis" then he couldn't possibly support Affirmative Action. - pintomp3, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2logical? those aren't even the definitions of the words. by jabberwolf's definition martin luther king is a racist because recognized the existing inequalities still present in america and supported affirmative action
- twomeyw23334, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1racism: racial prejudice or discrimination
racial: Of, relating to, or characteristic of race or races.
race: a category of humankind that shares certain distinctive physical traits
discrimination: The act of discriminating.
The ability or power to see or make fine distinctions; discernment.
Treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit; partiality or prejudice:
Is that broken down for you enough pintomp? Or are we supposed to make up new definitions to English words to satisfy your love affair with with MLK? Do you really expect me to turn my brain off and agree with you simply because "welll MLK said...." No wonder you're an Obama supporter, you make a perfect puppet. I bet you think Obama is an absolute perfect human being as well, right? I would love it if he came out against AA, two Gods saying different things, I think your head might explode.
Here's a tip for future arguments. Try using actual arguments instead of simply referring to what one of your Gods believes. Most other people have a thought process that leads them to their beliefs.

- WasabiBomb, on 07/29/2008, -2/+1What race would that be, Bohica?
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2In a classic Obama moment, he claims to be "All of the Above."
"I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton's Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas. I've gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world's poorest nations. I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners - an inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters. I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible." - WasabiBomb, on 07/29/2008, -1/+1Ah, so because he's presenting himself as being a non-racial candidate, his campaign is based on race. Gotcha.

- DavidGX, on 07/29/2008, -3/+13Ya rly.
- ippey, on 07/28/2008, -6/+21I'm still pro-Obama, but even the people quoted in the article both say that they don't think this was a planned strategy or actually intended it to appeal to white voters. Like even this article says, it's been 10 years. He's allowed to change his mind and adapt to what is being presented to him how he sees fit.
I'm all for bashing McCain, but only when he really deserves it.- macweirdo42, on 07/29/2008, -3/+7What's changed in 10 years is that McCain has learned his place. He's learned that if he's to make it anywhere in the Republican party, he'd better damn well toe the line.
- ancafm, on 07/29/2008, -2/+2even if this was not a planned strategy, it is a terrible move. look at the logic that is all to easy to stick to McCain now. McCain opposes affirmative action (opposition is widely recognized as a rather "white" issue) --> some conservatives have claimed Obama rose to prominence because of affirmative action --> Obama is black --> McCain opposes black people --> McCain is racist. Even if this logic chain is exaggerated or unfair to McCain its all to easy to make. This was a terrible choice for McCain, and if no one advised him against it within his campaign that was also a terrible decision.
- jaxcs, on 07/29/2008, -0/+110 years ago, sounds like a long time, but it's really better understood as 2 presidential races ago, when he last ran for president. Unless he can show how and why he developed this change of mind, he is absolutely a flip flopper who is running to the right in the bid for president. One other major change from the earlier bid and this one is his embrace of religion. Eight years ago, he largely rejected religion, this time around, he comes with a pastor.

- joe8pack, on 07/29/2008, -9/+15If you liked Bush , you'll love McSame - older, crankier and a richer douche bag by far. I don't think you can find an old white guy with better intentions and more money and less ability to run this country, a lethal package just waiting for an uneducated voter to put him into office.
- superkendall, on 07/29/2008, -11/+6Bush and McCain are totally separate. Bush in no way tried to control spending, while McCain has sworn off earmarks. Furthermore McCain and Bush have disagreed a LOT over the past few years...
- Seann7656, on 07/29/2008, -8/+6I'd actually take Bush over McCain
- Albumen, on 07/29/2008, -3/+2I like bush over my cain as well.
- twomeyw23334, on 07/29/2008, -3/+2So what makes you better than those trying to equate Obama to Jeremiah Wright?
Obama actually had a closer relationship with him than McCain to Bush. If your candidate is actually so much better how about demonstrating it by comparing him to the person he is actually running against.- FrenchAnarchy, on 07/29/2008, -2/+2Have Rev. Jeremiah Wright's policies been ruining America for the last 8 years? I thought so...
- twomeyw23334, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Was Jeremiah Wright president for the last 8 years?
thought so...
McCain != Bush
Obama != Jeremiah Wright
If you need to equate one of these to get a knee-jerk negative reaction from people about a candidate than you have a damn poor leg to stand on. Although, when your other leg is "change" and "hope," I guess I can see how any arguement, regardless how inaccurate or crappy, would be necessary.
- r3negadeX, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3What has Obama done to show you that he has a better ability to run this country? Not a McCain supporter, but just curious.

- gdehms, on 07/29/2008, -4/+7I don't think any Obama supporters think that the race is over yet. There have been upsets before and it would be quite easy for that to happen if Obama supporters stopped .... supporting him. In the polls, although Obama is 9 points ahead (according to CNN), it is quite easy for that to swing the other way.
- crackberri, on 07/29/2008, -7/+1"Obama-McCain Matchup: Blowout Or Trench Warfare?

Also, I'm shocked the Clinton News Network only "gave" him 9 points...... - gdehms, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2You're acting like Digg is an accurate representation of the American population. By Obama supporters, I'm not just talking about Digg Obama supporters, I'm talking about all Obama supporters. Getting off the internet generally helps with this understanding.
Then again, trying to discuss this with a person so clearly biased as yourself is futile so I think I'll just stop here. - crackberri, on 07/29/2008, -3/+2Sorry, but I don’t think the 672 Digg supporters were Bush supporters…...
Additionally, getting off the Internet to obtain my news from CNN while drinking Kool-aid is not my cup of tea.

Yes, at one time blacks or wtf ever were discriminated against. However, in this day in age it's completely reversed. People who are white and aren't racist get completely shafted by both their own people and everyone else.

Or how "black people cannot be racist." There's an undeniable, pervasive double standard in America today.

- TheGuruStud, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6but but but you owe me whitey....
I'm about ***** tired of that thought pattern and behavior. B/c when they get the job and still fail in life, guess what, they blame it on whitey. They'll never better themselves being spoon fed. It works the same with anything.
I've seen several students pass at the private college (nearly all white school) I attended, b/c they pulled the race card at the end of the semester when they were failing badly (not to mention continual tardiness and not following instructions, which is instant expulsion if a white kid does it). They didn't even pay the 10s of the Gs that I had to.
It's ***** like that pisses white people off, then, some ***** hippie and black people call us racist. - FrenchAnarchy, on 07/29/2008, -3/+1That's a cooked story, hombre. I read that exact same comment a month or two ago, by a different poster.

- DivisibleByZero, on 07/29/2008, -2/+7"Regarding the flip-flop, Murdock notes the fact that a full decade has elapsed since McCain's previous position. 'He's changed his mind, and I think he's doing the right thing.'"
This guy's got a point. It is possible to change your mind about something. Maybe McCain thinks things have changed?
It is good to challenge Obama on this though. I understand his own reasons for trying not to talk about it, but it is an important issue, so I'd like to hear the guy's thoughts if I'm going to vote for him.- WasabiBomb, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1You know, it'd be a lot more believable if he'd changed his mind a while back, instead of while he's running for President against a voter who's perceived as black.
- zacharytelschow, on 07/29/2008, -1/+1"...so I'd like to hear [Obama's] thoughts if I'm going to vote for him."
Give it about two months. Regardless of which side of the issue you're on, he'll tell you whatever you want to hear.- WasabiBomb, on 07/29/2008, -1/+1Are you sure you want to compare Obama's flipflops to McCain's?
- zacharytelschow, on 07/29/2008, -1/+1Obama changes his position over what he has claimed are his core principles. McCain has been changing his mind over things of minor importance, sometimes when compared to positions held as long as a decade ago. Where was Obama a decade ago? High school?
- WasabiBomb, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1So you're willing to admit that the military, and funding thereof, is of minor importance to McCain?
- lebaige, on 07/29/2008, -6/+9I bet if I made a post that said McCain is an evil racist war mongering devil man who will eat your children and throw you in prison, it would be an instant front page hit. Oh, and war for oil. Ubuntu. Bush nazi. Obama rules.

- Depthfunction, on 07/29/2008, -8/+10Seeing all of the racist comments that have been made about Obama since the start of his campaign, not only here on Digg but elsewhere on the internet and in the real world has only served to demonstrate just how much we still need affirmative action in this country.
Obama's presidency will go a long way towards burying a lot of the racism that still exists in this country. Under President Obama, we'll be closer to a time when affirmative action isn't needed, but for now, the truth is that is necessary.- twomeyw23334, on 07/29/2008, -2/+4You start out by asserting your disdain for racism, and then attempt to use that to support forced racism. There's no such thing as good racism, you can't make up for racism by mandating opposite racism, that's just ridiculous.
- superkendall, on 07/29/2008, -2/+3What the hell. Link to one single story on Digg about Obama with a racist comment in the past week.
People do not care about race in this campaign. They care about ideas.- jaxcs, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2Does it have to be this week? How about the Obama sock puppet or T Shirt where he is pictured as a monkey? Does the fact that he is identified as a Muslim have to do solely with the fact that he is name is Obama or does his skin color have something to do with the "confusion".
- thatsmyaibo, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2I don't think Obama has to win to make that point. It is being made now as he is the front runner for the Democratic party. I just want whoever is qualified and unfortunately neither of them are. We don't need 4 years of a horrible presidency just so this country can make a racial point. I think your thought process on that is completely wrong.
- DivisibleByZero, on 07/29/2008, -1/+3From the original article:
"When the Arizona Legislature considered a similar plan 10 years ago, McCain told a Hispanic group that 'rather than engage in divisive ballot initiatives, we must have a dialogue and cooperation and mutual efforts together to provide for every child in America to fulfill their expectations.'"
Sounds more like he was pandering to hispanic voters in 98 than he is pandering to white voters now. - EnderMB, on 07/29/2008, -11/+7Buried for leftist Huffington Post spam.
- Papajohn56, on 07/29/2008, -6/+12Obama supports Affirmative-Action, that's pretty racist. It's just turned in other directions.
- pintomp3, on 07/29/2008, -4/+6martin luther king did too. i guess he was a racist also.
- cadmiumpaint, on 07/29/2008, -2/+3he supported it as a temporary measure...as a bridge. not as a permanent fixture in society.
- pintomp3, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2right. a couple decades of corrective measures make up for centuries of brutal slavery. the justice system is perfect now and there are no hints of racism. police don't shoot unarmed black men or tase them to death while in police custody. all institutionalized racism has ended.

- MrXfromPlanetX, on 07/29/2008, -4/+6I'm sick of Huffpo. They had an agenda to get Obama elected even before he got the nomination. How about covering any of the other candidates for a change http://digg.com/elections
They have this program to sign up to help with news coverage for candidates, so I tried it out. I believe it's called "Off The Bus" or something like that. The only option has been to cover Barack Obama.
I blame the media for Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul not making it farther in the election process. How much news coverage the media choses to give someone, directly impacts how much support they get. If that wasn't the case, the Republican Party wouldn't have got stuck with McCain.
NPR is just as bad as Huffpo. Around the time of primaries I did a Google search for both Barack Obama and Dennis Kucinich on NPR "'candidate name' site:npr.org" Kucinich had close to 500 matches and Obama had close to 20000.
Check out how bad NPR gave the shaft to Ron Paul http://mrxfromplanetx.com/2008/05/17/how-npr-cover ...
We need to bring back the equal access laws. Michael Powell (Colin Powell's son) got rid of them while he was head of the FCC, http://mrxfromplanetx.com/orwell-rolls-in-his-grav ...
We also need a law passed saying you can't conduct a poll on candidates and leave particular candidates out of the poll, there for fixing the poll. I also believe opinion polls -- particularly for elections -- need to have every question made public along with the poll. They should not be able to publish results without disclosing exactly what questions they asked to get the results.- superkendall, on 07/29/2008, -2/+2We do NOT need censorship through equality laws, despite the overwhelming coverage for Obama. Remember that such overwhelming obvious bias can hurt as much as help, when the voter tires of it...
- MikeFallopian, on 07/29/2008, -3/+12Racial affirmative action is by design unfair and discriminatory - the fact that Obama still supports it despite claiming to adhere to a "post-racial" worldview is the real problem here. Both candidates should come out with a statement saying that they support affirmative action when it is based on income and socio-economic status, but reject it when it is based on race.
- jshooter1377, on 07/29/2008, -4/+5My God he is senile!
- jabberwolf, on 07/29/2008, -6/+5OBAMA is from affirmative action. = Harvard.
Some lower scoring person got ahead based on race. Not his parents income or demographics.
He comes from Reverend's wrights Church where people are told they are entitled to more than everyone else based on their great great grandparents struggle. Screw every other race who's parents had a struggle and other races coming to the USA even more recently with much much less. ( Asian immigrants or Latin immigrants with nothing)
Guess what AFFIRMATIVE ACTION = BIASED BY RACE = RACIST
You can try to argue the points or intentions but those are the facts. It's racist to the core and is the very definition of racism.- WasabiBomb, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2Are you sure you really want to compare Obama's grades to McCain's?
- Dozernotz, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1HA! I'm not a big fan of affirmative action, but are you really suggesting that Barack Obama got into Harvard Law School because Harvard was trying to meet an affirmative action quota? I mean really? Do you think Harvard Law School has so few black applicants that they need to make "allowances" in order to fill a quota?
Even if you do believe that he didn't "deserve" to go to Harvard, you might consider that Obama's extremely wealthy and influential family (not to mention his prep-school scholarship) may have had more affect on admissions more than his skin color. If that seems ridiculous to you, I suspect you're not too knowedgeable about the ivy league. - FrenchAnarchy, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2You don't how or why Obama got into Harvard, jabberwolf. You're just making ***** up, AGAIN.
- twigboy, on 07/29/2008, -2/+1But can McCain run Crysis?
- zelig, on 07/29/2008, -1/+5Yes, McCain should be more like Obama, who has three or four viewpoints on every issue, depending on who he's speaking to at the moment.
- bacchante, on 07/29/2008, -3/+1I've been waiting for this.
I am certain that if McCain just started using racial slurs when referring to Obama that he would still win in 2008. - runCMD, on 07/29/2008, -4/+2Nothing is more divisive than Obama's support. The statistical lopsidedness of the African American vote is staggering. Speaking out against racist views and bigoted support is something McCain can do with a clear conscience. Obama does not come with a clean slate in that arena. His own published hateful words betray him.
- FrenchAnarchy, on 07/29/2008, -1/+1You are such a ***** moron. It's so painfully obvious you haven't Obama's book. While I didn't particularly enjoy it, beacuse basically its a glorified PR pamphlet, you can tell Obama went out his way not to say anything offensive.
As for the African American, I hear this reverse racism argument a lot. The statistical FACT is African Americans support Obama 5% more than they did Kerry in '04. Bigots like yourself surely make up a higher percentage.- runCMD, on 07/29/2008, -1/+1lol French Guy. Moron, I am not. I've been tested. ; )
I can't prove to you that I have it on my iPhone ... I can only tell you that I do. I have listened to it everyday since I bought it. And I have shared it with anyone that will listen in. They are as shocked as I was to hear such a sweet rememberance of a foul youth.
The reverse racism - as you call it ... I see it as plain bigotry ... is not imagined. I am seeing the line drawn in the sand where I work ... work I socialize ... where I chat.
You can call me what you like. I am confident in my choices in life. I have looked out at the man Obama and all I feel is shame for the people so easily seduced by his delusion.
Kerry ? lol. You're really reaching

- WakeRider, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5I dislike affirmative action. It is racism pure and simple. When someone applies for a job they should get that job because they have qualifications, not their skin color. If a white person is better than a black candidate, hire him. If the black candidate is better, then hire him. If a woman appears better than both of them, then hire her. Hire whoever is the best person suited and qualified for the job regardless of age, race, gender etc, etc. I see from some of the above comments that people are generally of this opinion.
Just pointing out, affirmative action is what fuels the hate groups. People wonder why we still have neo-nazis and the KKK. They recruit angry and disillusioned white people (people who have missed out on jobs to blacks when the white person clearly had the better qualifications etc). If affirmative action was dropped, you would see a large reduction in the activity of hate groups. You would be destroying one of their main recruitment tools. If you don't believe me, have a look at Stormfront and you will be able to witness this for yourself.- Carter313, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2I had never seen stormfront before, that site alone proves that affirmative action is necessary, do you honestly believe that any of the ignorant worthless pieces of nazi subhuman ***** would hire a minority whether they were qualified or not?

oh, how low can you go - SgtQuackers, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Has Digg just become a Huffington Post website. Thats all we see on the front page. This has to stop.
- CrimsonBlur, on 07/29/2008, -1/+4I'm not voting for McCain, but I do think Affirmative-Action laws should be abolished. If that is his stance, it's one thing I can agree with him on.
Some have mentioned Martin Luther King Jr. He was a great man, but when he was endorsing Affirmative-Action laws, the racial climate in the country was much different. I highly doubt he anticipated it would function as it does now, or that it would even be in place decades later.
It's not even a racial issue anymore, it's a practical and social one. My guess is if Martin Luther King Jr. was alive today, he would agree with people like Bill Cosby, who basically says the days of blaming "the white man" for keeping black people down in the US are over and Affirmative-Action is just continuing racism in a different form. It's time to move on. - kmlove, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Huffington Post, buried.
