McCain's New Ad: "Beautiful" Words Won't Improve Your Life
huffingtonpost.com — The McCain campaign is out with a new, minute long TV ad that is at once biographical and a not-too-subtle jab at Barack Obama.

- QuadZeroRoute, on 07/08/2008, -22/+6What I can't understand is why a liberal like yourself has been trying to befriend me for the last week? Confused much?
- blakecr, on 07/08/2008, -4/+25What I am confused about is why you used a definite article before the word liberal, I guess when all you watch is Hannity and Colmes and Glenn Beck you refer to us "liberals" in a way like racists say "a black" or "a colored." Liberal is an adjective, and you guys turn it into a noun with the definite article to assume a negative connotation. Do you realize how hickish you sound? The following is a better way to say what you mean.
"What I can't understand is why a person that is in favor of progress or reform like yourself is attempting to befriend a confused individual like me." - MadKennyP, on 07/08/2008, -4/+10QZR: You don't understand MOST things.
- Karmavs, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8@blakecr: “A” is the indefinite article.
- darksideownedu, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2@Karmavs: Doesn't matter, liberal is still an adjective, and is used in a way that is meant to demean and demonize. It's stupid, childish, and is the political equivalent of saying "no you're a poopyhead." Believing in liberal values does not make you a bad person, just as believing in conservative values does not make you spiritual and just (see: current president).
- RogueGenius, on 07/09/2008, -4/+1Liberals are just like conservatives... only about 4 to 10 times smarter.
- blakecr, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1An indefinite article (English a, an) is used before singular nouns that refer to any member of a group.
Karmavs is correct. It doesn't change the fact that the way people say "a liberal" is demeaning. one is liberal not a liberal. One is a democrat and can be democratic but it does not mean the same thing. In my opinion using an "indefinite" article in front of any adjective, turning it into a noun, is a subtle way of being nasty.
One is liberal and a democrat. One can also be conservative and a republican.
Do you see what I am saying?
I didn't want to say it again, but using "a" before the adjective is the same thing that racists use when they say "a black" or "a colored." And if you think about it any derogatory ethnic, racial, or religious slur is turned even more racist and hate filled by placing an indefinite article before it.
- blakecr, on 07/08/2008, -4/+25What I am confused about is why you used a definite article before the word liberal, I guess when all you watch is Hannity and Colmes and Glenn Beck you refer to us "liberals" in a way like racists say "a black" or "a colored." - Barackalypse, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3So you're saying he cracks under pressure?
- filmbandit, on 07/09/2008, -2/+5choke? -- he's being interrupted.
turn up the audio- BadgerDigger, on 09/04/2008, -1/+2So you are saying he can't handle an interruption and only does well when everything is perfectly scripted?
- blakecr, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Have you ever had any experience in public speaking. It is very difficult when people are just murmuring a little in the crowd, not to mention interrupting. It throws you off. I have had times when I have completely forgotten everything that I was saying and had to move way off topic and completely forget everything I was trying to portray. I am not an oratory giant, or any kind of expert on the matter, but it is very difficult. Do you really want to talk about Obama's speaking ability? McCain sounds like Elmer Fudd up there. Hot water bottles to dehydrated babies? WTF?
- ModernGeek, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1The music in the McCain commercial sounds like the polar express.

- rz8472, on 07/09/2008, -1/+9Hi, I'm John McCain and I have to constantly point out that I was a POW in a North Vietnamese prison camp. My experiences there define who I am and led me to believe that we should uphold the Geneva Conventions because torture simply doesn't... oh wait this cordless telegraph is telling me that I'm losing support from the far right. In that case, torture away and double Guantanamo!
Anyways, I'm a goddamned war hero and even though I've turned against everything I stood for you better vote for me or you must hate America... or something.- ZenMojo, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3"Being a war hero doesn't make you qualified for president."
"HOW DARE YOU QUESTION MY SERVICE! I'M HURT!"
"Then stop using your service as a political gambit."
"HOW DARE YOU ACCUSE ME OF CASHING IN ON MY TORTURE!?"
"Do you even watch your own commercials...?"
"BUT I'M A WAR HERO!!!!" - rpgmaker, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1To be fair, he didn't used to point out his time as a POW in the past but he is doing it constantly now that we are on the final tracks of the race and the polls aren't so favorable. Quite frankly, that's the most attractive thing of his character as a candidate and that's why his campaign was so offended by the Wesley's comments.
- ZenMojo, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3"Being a war hero doesn't make you qualified for president."

Kennedy...Robert Kennedy...Jesus Christ...Franklin Roosevelt...Ronald Reagan...Winston Churchill...Abraham Lincoln these people were masters of the oratory arts. They spoke "beautifully" but other than that they didn't accomplish anything...well yea I think they did. Sorry Johnny boy it is not good to tell the people what you are bad at in your advertisements. It seems that you keep pointing out what Obama is good at and what you lack. You are a public relations night mere, and the campaign staff that put this together should be fired. You don't market someones gifts and call your lack of that gift a strength...the people are smarter than that. Try again.
- Colitas13, on 07/09/2008, -1/+10This is certainly one stupid ad for a presidential candidate. Who the hell did they hire?
- aznmoron, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1They shoulda gone with the guy that did the Big John Ad
- superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -14/+3But they also did things. So far Obama is all just talk, even with a few years in the senate! Lincoln especially at this point had a lot more real world stuff under the belt.
It's when you mix powerful words WITH powerful actions, that's when the magic happens. Obama has given us a lot of words, but even those twist all around depending on the wind - there is little solid behind them.- pintomp3, on 07/09/2008, -1/+11how do you define "did things"? martin luther king wasn't in office and didn't pass any bills, but his words inspired and mobilized a movement. here is a list of "stuff":

- RRJackson, on 07/09/2008, -8/+3Wow, a whole list of people who did irrevocable damage to the world. Nice going. You really made your case. You've got Roosevelt who got us into a war on false pretenses and after provoking an attack on our Hawaiian military base he responded by sending 70% of our troops to Europe. Robert Kennedy who worked the McCarthy red-scare hearings for HUAC and then tried union-busting against the Teamsters. MLK who left a wake of rioting. Mandela who was at least partially responsible for the dismal state of post-Apartheid South Africa. The other Kennedy brother who was so ill-prepared to deal with the Soviets that he nearly got us into a nuclear war, all while ramping up the war in Vietnam. Ronald Reagan, whose push to end the Cold War opened up those labor markets and killed American industry. Lincoln, who couldn't seem to negotiate terms of a compromise that would keep our nation from being ripped apart. Churchill who went back on his word and attacked Germany for no reason whatsoever effectively splitting Europe in half for 40 years. You've got some real winners up there.
- ZenMojo, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2MLK was dead. Kind of hard to blame him for riots.
- RRJackson, on 07/09/2008, -4/+2You need to read up. MLK didn't die until April of '68. Rochester, New York and Philly were in '64. The Watts riot was in '65. Cleveland, Chicago and San Francisco were in '66. Detroit, Newark, Minneapolis and Milwaukee were in '67. Orangeburg was in February of '68. Today MLK would be classified as a Domestic Terrorist and sent to Gitmo. It's a pity we didn't have a Department of Homeland Security in '55.
- blakecr, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2I do not think I need to argue any case for any of the people on my list above. You may not have agreed with their positions, but you can not argue the positive impact they left. I think you will have a serious problem finding a history teacher who would support your idea of these people being a negative impact on society. You guys keep saying that Obama hasn't done anything in his short time in office, what has McCain done in his long time in office? What has he accomplished? The point of the comment from me is McCain is attacking Obama's strength and playing up his weakness as a strength with no validity. It is simply bad marketing. In our capitalist society, if one has bad marketing and the product doesn't work, that product is not bought. This means that the product of John McCain is not being bought by the public. He needs to change his marketing or change his product. Vintage John from 2000 would be a better product, but this movement from him to the extreme right is damaging his chances considerably. It is like he is trying to suck.
- rpgmaker, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1@blakecr: Exactly. They left a positive impact on society and regarding to the MLK riots, sometimes you need them to make your voice be heard, just look at what you got now, a congress that doesn't listen to you and in a war that you don't want. The things is that now the media will paint any rioter as a terrorist...
- blakecr, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1@RRJ
Lets go ahead and scratch terrorist movement to the American Revolutionaries.
John Locke's Social Contract = Terrorism
John Dickinson's Declaration of Rights and Grievances = Terrorism
Boston Tea Party = Terrorism
Declaration of Independence = Terrorism
Suffolk Resolves = Terrorism
George Washington, James Madison, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson = Terrorists
We are a nation born from terrorists and a terrorist nation in your definition of terrorism.
The Constitution was written to ensure change and progress. It was meant to change. Thats why it declares the rights of the people to overthrow the government when it ceases to be a government for and by the people.
Stop calling people that cause change terrorists. You sound stupid.
"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable."
John F. Kennedy
But don't listen to JFK he was a terrorist and a communist. /sarc - RRJackson, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Lotta apologists here. Hero-worshiping at the altar of JFK, who left absolutely no positive impact on the United States whatsoever. He was an empty suit who spouted a lot of feel-good rhetoric while he was banging actresses behind his wife's back. If he'd been shot in '61 we might have avoided a lot of unpleasantness that his administration brought with it. And MLK, who should have been shot at birth.
Whatever. Children frequently feel the need to rebel against establishment. It makes them feel better about being ignorant and powerless. I understand why you're Obama fans, but that doesn't make it any less repulsive. - blakecr, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Do you not understand that the biggest bad asses of rebellions were the American Revolutionaries and the Sons of Liberty? The United States of America was born out of rebellion and had little chance to succeed. Your words are full of stupidity and hatred. Funny how those two so often go hand in hand. I don't put these people up as infallible super heroes of ideals, but rather people who faced some of the worlds most challenging times and through their inspiring words and leadership progressed society towards something a little better. These people will be in the history books for a very long time because the entire world recognizes their positive impacts on society. You and I however will fade like the seasons. Congratulations on lowering my expectations on human kind as a whole.
- RRJackson, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1The "founding fathers" were the equivalent of a bunch of modern American corporate CEOs who wanted to stop paying taxes and found a government that was run by business instead of monarchy. You revere them because in the late 1800's a group of New York Marxist Hegelians decided that the educational model for this country should be based on the dialectic and stress the creation of good citizens over good scholars. So everything was boiled down to good/evil pairings to make things simple. It's why we can't have a nuanced discussion in the United States. All we get are "both sides of the story" from people who can't see that the story is multifaceted. So the founding fathers were "good" and England was "bad" and anything in-between is lost on the semi-literate masses. Not to imply that you're semi-literate. From what I can tell you're barely literate at all.

- Hetman, on 07/08/2008, -7/+18Yea that is what I believed the last two times I voted. Guess what the opposite happened, we had a republican for the next 8 years. Do not trust the government or any politician it is a scam.
- winnestow, on 07/09/2008, -11/+6do you still trust obama? he now supports faith based initiatives you know. he hasn't promised to pull out of iraq, you know.
- bjornski, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5@winnestow
I'm totally against government money going to faith-based stuff, but after reading the proposals, and how things would be done and now monies would be spent, I'm NOT against his proposal.
This would be money going to good causes, that just happen to be spearheaded by people with a religious background.
These are things that money SHOULD be spent on, and if the only people spending it on these goals are faith-based, then so be it.
Because the vaunted MARKET sure the ***** isn't pulling it's weight in these areas. Helping the poor isn't "profitable" enough.
If the people that happen to think these are worthwhile things to do happen to be religious, so be it. They deserve the money a HELL of a lot more than "the market" does.

- DreamSynthesis, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3You fail to realize that the US in general is not like digg. There are plenty of people in the US for whom this ad will resonate with. Not everyone holds your viewpoint and there are many undecided voters that can be won over by casting Obama as a man of all words but no action. Whatever the reality of the situation may be it won't matter given how uniformed many voters are.
- SheilaNoya, on 07/08/2008, -9/+41Apparently, McCain doesn't see any value in inspiring millions of Americans to take an active role in our future.

- superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -9/+4Sure he does, McCain just will not force them to do so. It amazes me that in a world where Digg is in an uproar over privacy concerns and the government stepping into your life, that MANDATORY community service (or you get no federal financial aid for school which you cannot get by without if you are poor) flies with no grief. It's like we all suddenly became drunk drivers having to serve time for the government.
I don't want to go back to being a serf thanks!
And just for the record, I do plenty of volunteer work myself - but it's my choice when and for who.- SheilaNoya, on 07/09/2008, -3/+8Where the hell do you get "mandatory" community service from? Stop getting your false information from Fox News and you won't sound so stupid next time.
If you want to take out a student loan, you are free to do so - nothing will change. However, if you want to attend college for FREE, then you can volunteer to do community service in an approved program and the government will provide your tuition. It's a bonus, not a requirement.

Americans are interested in the future. The future of our children. We want to look ahead and we want something different. John McCaincient represents the past in every way possible.
We are going not only hope for a better life, but as John suggests in his ad, we will vote for a better one by voting for Barack Obama. Barack Obama represents the future. A future in which more of us can realize the American dream.

- TVarmy, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4I think it's just the wisdom of crowds. We tend to be a self-affirming bunch. Our demographic tends to prefer candidates who are different or new (libertarian, or young, or inspiring) and reject candidates who are boring or phony. We tend to digg up articles which match our views, so those of us who don't agree don't have as big a say to begin with, and get fed news from the majority.
This seems to be the case with the mainstream media as well, only instead it is based on money. Of course, rich people and people who have the means to both afford news channels and have time to watch them have more influence, while Digg is a bit more democratic.- tobikow, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1The internets knows all. ask anon.
- shauncorleone, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3I'd say it's pretty obvious that if you went from Ron Paul to Barack Obama, then you don't stand for anything and generally have no clue about your candidate's stance on most major issues.
One thing I have to give to the most dedicated Ron Paul crazies: at least they're still backing small government ideals which I can respect, though Paul takes it a little far.

The offshore drilling platforms will cost many millions, and who do you think will pay for that? The oil companies? The Gov't? No, it will be us, at the pump. Then, we "won't see a drop of oil until 2017" (from the Bush administration's own analysis) and the stations won't reach full production until almost 2030. How in the hell is that supposed to help?

The ends justify the means. - lukas88, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Yikes, way to read more into my comment then I intended.
I agree that knowing what is "right" is difficult and not up to me to decide, but knowing what is wrong on instance-by-instance basis is much more objective.
When I wrote the comment I had the iraq war in mind as something wrong. Many americans and the politicians they put in office were pro war because they wanted to feel safer (i.e., improving their lives), however, it was not the right thing to do. We know it was wrong not just because of hindsight. Many people were saying it was wrong ahead of time. But we let the government scare us into supporting it (a pattern in american politics).
Another issue that bothers me is that so many Americans are up in arms over gas prices, but a comparative few are worried about the long term effects of our gas guzzling way of life (on the environment, economy of our country, economy of the world, etc). Again, more concerned over improving their lives than how they might be effecting others (future generations).
Go ahead and call me pompous and digg me down, I know it is easier than thinking about it and maybe deciding to make a difference.

Considering the subsequent attack, you should have just said "you gotta purty mouth boy." Words matter. Words describe necessity, relate urgency and inspire action. Combined with clear direction and organization, they move mountains. So far, both in this election and in Obama's history, it appears that formula is there. I'm giving him a shot. At least with McCain you know exactly what you are getting. Obama keeps shifting, it's impossible to tell where he really stands on anything.- licnyc, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5I love this "supports the surge" line. The surge means it took them 4 years to figure out they didn't have enough troops, but now the damage is already done so its 4 years too late. YAY surge! I can't wait for the 2nd or 3rd surge personally.
This drilling bit is also ridiculous, the states that would be affected by the drilling aren't not going to let it happen, besides that its not going to make that much of a difference.
But this last part really takes the cake, McFlipper flips flops so much its insane. This guy has reversed position on nearly 1/2 the issues. - ZenMojo, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1First, eleven years ago Barack Obama was in his first four months in his first year in his first term in the Illinois Senate and this was not even Barack Obama's district.
Second, 1997 was one building.
Third, there is a pregnant gap of seven years for the series of events that eventually led to Tony Rezko's status as "slum lord," at least partly attributable to the fact that his company went under. Not exactly a slum lord.
You see, in 1997 Rezko was considered an upstanding member of the Chicago community. It was not until 2004 when people became suspicious of his business activities and he drew the attention of the Feds.
And really, a $1000 donation from a millionaire? Everyone knows Rezko tried to recruit Obama out of law school back in 1992, although Obama turned him down to run a voter registration drive and become a community organizer and law-school lecturer. And Rezko threw money at everybody in Chicago.- winnestow, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1you point is that obama has many corrupt friends

- minox, on 07/09/2008, -2/+7I think the ad is actually pretty good. It subtly associates Obama with the excesses of the 60s, which was largely about rhetoric that lacked substance. McCain might risk losing the vote of baby boomers who actually think the Big Chill is a profound movie.

- CountBrass, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Obama *is* a flip-flopper.
- radiofrequency, on 07/09/2008, -8/+3I doubt McCain was talking about Obama when he said "beautiful words". Obama is a snake and all his policies are disastrous for America and for Americans.
Conservation isn't going to fix energy problems and the nation NEEDS energy in order to grow and to produce. John McCain has a commonsense energy policy that includes nuclear energy and drilling which will give us those resources we so desperately need.
Nationalized healthcare is a bad idea. It will grow HMO bureaucracy which will cost more and leave less to doctors. It will tax medical resources to the limit as baby boomers enter their "dying slowly" years at the expense of the younger generation who need more money to purchase housing, raise their own families, and plan for their own retirement when social security may be insolvent.
On foreign policy, talking to Iran is a terrible idea. Only a twit like Obama thinks walking into the mouth of a sworn enemy of the United States and freedom will end in concessions from anyone but ourselves - the very people he's supposed to represent.
There's a character issue. McCain has spent his life being an American. Barack Obama feels guilt for being an American. Barack Obama's idea of change is rolling over for other nations, giving up our thermostats, our SUV's, letting other countries decide what we can eat. Unacceptable. Maybe Michelle should give up the $1000 pairs of shoes, $2000 skirts and $900 blouses first. Barack Obama is already joking about how his "ears wouldn't fit on Mt. Rushmore". Most Americans frown on that kind of ostentation - even those who can afford it. It's tacky, tasteless, and a sign of big-headedness. Contrast that to McCain who spent 6 years of his life as a POW and you can see that the Obama's have practically had their whole lives handed to them on a silver platter and attribute it to their manifest destiny instead of accepting how lucky they were to be part of the greatest nation on earth. They don't understand sacrifice and nothing will be uglier than when they lose the election in November. I can already picture them back in their racist, anti-American church. - Anzat, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3Heh, "He believes we live in a dangerous world..." Translation:
