- homedaddy, on 02/09/2008, -7/+50I have to admit that I'm more excited about Obama than I have been about any realistic presidential candidate that I can remember. I really hope that this growing bi-partisan optimism can make some positive succeed in the fall and bring some positive changes to our system.
- x252, on 02/09/2008, -8/+3I've yet to meet a republican in Georgia that likes Obama.
- br0ck, on 02/09/2008, -1/+11In Georgia, a Republican stronghold, Obama had more votes in this primary than all remaining Republican candidates combined. He also had more votes than every Democrat combined in the 2004 primaries, which indicates a very unmotivated electorate compared to this year in GA. Actually, going back to 2000, he even had more primary votes than every republican put together (McCain & Bush were neck and neck and on the democratic side he had FAR more Gore's 238,000). Finally, back to the 2004 general election, less than 1 million democrats voted for Kerry and Kerry was only 300,000 behind Bush, so the huge turnout and massive motivated electorate actually make it seem plausible that Obama could take the state.

I realize I'm making an extreme generalization here, and that I could be completely out of line with how you think, but considering the fact that Obama beat Hillary almost 2:1 in the primary, I don't think your comment is any more "in line" than mine.

- RRJackson, on 02/10/2008, -13/+2If "realistic" means "no chance at all of winning in a general election," then yes, you've found your man.
- RonJon715, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2I'm pretty sure that Hillary is unelectable, so I don't understand how Obama couldn't be our best shot. I can't speak for Georgia, but I've met tons of Republicans in Chicago that are planning on voting for Obama if he gets the nomination. They have really become turned off by their own party over the past 25 years. The never ending borrowing and spending has left fiscal conservatives in disarray. They had excuses for Reagan's outrageous spending, but have finally realized that they were chasing a lie. In every major city I've been, in the north at least (ie Chicago, NY, Boston, LA), Republicans have become embarrassed by the constant Bible thumping and fear mongering that has become their parties main stay as of late. The fact that anyone actually cares what people like Jerry Falwell have to say is simply just embarrassing to the Republicans I know (and I know a lot of them, having lived in the suburbs). As for Georgia, I'm sure the Republican base there is not to keen on electing a black man or a woman. But then again, rural Georgia is still probably getting used to the fact that slavery is illegal.
- RRJackson, on 02/10/2008, -1/+1I don't think either Obama or Clinton can win in the general election, but Senator Clinton has all the connections that come with being married to an ex-president. We also all know everything that the Republicans have ever been able to scandalize about her or her husband already. Wait and see what happens if Obama gets the nomination. I remember seeing some guys doing research on Gary Hart once and they had index cards with one color representing years, one color representing months and one representing days. They started off with the years and worked back down trying to fill in a card for every day of his life. The things they found that might be worth using in smear campaigns were flagged with little mini-Post-Its. I found the whole thing pretty overwhelming at the time, but that was nearly 25 years ago. I'm sure it's a lot easier to assemble the research now. The surprises won't start coming until someone has the nomination, though. You don't waste your A material on a primary.
- crweaks23, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1I'm not sure where you're getting yoru information, but http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/02/08/20008.match ... disagrees. And this is a news source that is clearly pro-Clinton.

Bush and Cheney is winning combination. I would vote for them again. "
—LukasSmith - joepeg, on 02/10/2008, -2/+4He's not exactly wrong. "Obama Girl" who all but got naked in support of Obama didn't even vote in the primary. You don't win a presidential election with young voters.

What divides us?
Who is divided? - HerrEisenheim, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2The only thing different about him is that he's an exceptionally good and powerful speaker.
- ZenaTWQ, on 05/05/2008, -0/+0Different and frightening- he is creating a cult

- LukasSmith, on 02/09/2008, -19/+6Obama wont win. Pizza guys and college kids aren't smart enough to vote. They are too busy delivering pizzas or getting drunk.
- alexgeorge52, on 02/09/2008, -9/+2Another overheard conversation snippet: “You’re a nanny? That’s great; I’m actually in the market. How much do you charge?”
That's pretty cool.- vingtdeux, on 02/09/2008, -1/+1I found a new primary care doctor out of volunteering! I was organizing my area of the city, and she was canvassing out of our office! I love this guy.
- Motivaaator, on 02/09/2008, -3/+36Obama seems to have an overwhelming positive effect on those who encounter him. I hope he makes it.
- z28com, on 02/10/2008, -3/+1Ron Paul seems to have an overwhelming positive effect on those who encounter him. I hope he makes it. When Democrats are voting for Ron Paul in DROVES, that has to tell you something. You all need to take a real good look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG2PUZoukfA
- ritita, on 02/09/2008, -12/+5...Did anyone mention that he is pretty hot as well. That never hurt a candidate
- NJMeredith, on 02/09/2008, -3/+3Not sure what that's going to be like, most of us haven't lived long enough to have a hot president. The last one was probably JFK. Before that...? Abe?
- AmyWhere, on 02/09/2008, -0/+13Honestly... Abe?
- mercimadam, on 02/09/2008, -4/+1He defines sexy: confident, smart, passionate, and from what i've seen the man is FINE
- rz8472, on 02/09/2008, -1/+7Judging from what other people are saying, he is a fit and relatively good-looking 45-year old. Definitely the sexiest candidate remaining now that Edwards has dropped out (I say this as a heterosexual male), and certainly doesn't look like he has a goddamned goiter in his mouth like McCain.
How much of that will turn over to votes I don't know. It wasn't enough for Obamagirl not to skip the primaries.
As for other comments on this thread - yeah, JFK was probably the closest to a PILF we've had, same with Jackie being a FLILF. Bill Clinton gets points for his Arsenio Hall saxophone solo and the fact that he cheated on his wife. As for Abe Lincoln, his height disorder also made his face and body very unsymmetrical. He may have been a great leader but definitely was NOT sexy. In other news, I can't believe I just said that.- rdoger6424, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Taft = Sex
- maliath, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Although your comment is absurd, the fact that "Obama seems to have an overwhelming positive effect on those who encounter him. I hope he makes it." gets dugg up 30+ times and yours gets buried is telling. Both are empty phrases, yet one gets Diggers falling over themselves and the other gets them angry.

- Joliman, on 02/09/2008, -2/+24My favorite comment: “Anytime you canvass for a Democrat in the South and the white guys are with you, you know things are good,”
- loki49152, on 02/09/2008, -1/+6That shows a stunning ignorance of the actual demographics of the South. White Southerners were, up until very recently, overwhelmingly Democrat, and many of them left the party only because the Democrats so monumentally screwed over the farmers in the 70's and 80's.
- unique172, on 02/10/2008, -1/+1I always thought they were democrats until Regan, when he began exploiting racial tensions in the south to attract southern white males.
- dime, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Ignorance is right. White Southerners were, in fact, overwhelmingly Democrat up until very recently. But it was LBJ signing the Civil Rights Act that drove them away in droves. So yeah, the spirit of the original post is accurate.

- asdfkane, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2?
I'm pretty sure that's where the optimism arises, on both counts. $32 million in january vs. Hillary's $14 million (which may have included a $5 million loan from Bill) and electrifying orations.- alanr19, on 02/09/2008, -3/+2All he is is oration. "I believe".....blah blah blah confidence blah blah blah change........ blah.......
No real policies. Reminds me of Dan Quayle's "thousand points of light" directionless acid trip.
If he got into the white house, the Republicans would rip him a new one. He has ne experience in dealing with their hostility. Hillary does. It's why she gets up in the morning, she loves it, she frightens the ***** out of republicans.- iainc, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2You compared Obama to Quayle. What the ***** are you smoking?

- RuthlessPirate, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3His speeches are some of the most inspiring I've ever heard and he has broken records on campaign contributions. I'm plenty optimistic.
- obipwnobi, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1INSPIRATION does not equal LEADERSHIP
He uses the word UNITY like bush uses FREEDOM
Remember, Hitler made some damn good speeches when he united Germany under a single cause- Kazaki, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1A leader is someone who will drive people to perform the best they can be. A leader is not simply someone good at yelling direction because they know what's best, but rather someone who empowers people to naturally achieve what is best.
- NorthwestWolf, on 02/10/2008, -0/+0Oh wow, enthusiasm, optimism...that's what America needs! Sorry folks one guy, even if he is exceptional isn't going to change squat. Now if we could flush out the ranks of Congress and get the majority of the folks there focus on the proper goals maybe we could get somewhere.
I love to hear the people around here talk about how Congress is screwing everything up and then turn around and believe that a new president is going to make things better.

- Louie99, on 02/09/2008, -2/+6Obama is the first candidate to get Millennials truly excited about politics. Whether he wins or loses, that is great in itself.
- FrancoisLyon, on 02/09/2008, -4/+5Now that RP is getting the boot, Barack is our last great hope.
- smotpoker, on 02/09/2008, -2/+5Obama, in part simply by being bi-racial I think, makes it overwhelmingly apparent that the vast majority of the people are almost completely moderate and pretty much agree (or at least can endure long enough to learn) on what is right/wrong. Rather than divide and conquer he unites and conquers. Nearly all politicians design their speeches, policies and rhetoric to villify their opponents polarize the parties. They don't care if it is true or infuriates people because they know it will never be much more than half of them and that the other half will proceed to follow blindly anything they say.
We need to get this shady underhanded politics out of office. We need stop letting these pricks manipulate us. I suspect many/most of us have tried (conscientious non-voting) but look at what it has done - Force the moderates to pick between religious dogma and practicality/logic, who for some reason think every other religion in the world but their own can be corrupted.
We need to stop alienating and demonizing those we disagree with. Try to follow their logic and nicely indicate flaws (when possible/prudent). He said/She said 8th grade BS has been going on long enough. This is the information age, verifying any data is like 3 clicks away. Grow a pair already and fight for what you believe *the right way* that cannot be contested or criticized and will unduly not inspire support for/motivate your enemies - nastronomical, on 02/09/2008, -15/+5Let me help all of you that want to attend an Obama speech like I did.

There you go ZERO substance all fluff. The guy has no real accomplishments that would qualify him for President of the USA. It's like promoting the janitor to CEO.- PauliAnna, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3What do you expect, he's campaigning for president.
- alanr19, on 02/09/2008, -7/+2Its Oprah and other celebrity cockroaches that turn me off voting for Obama. You think they give a ***** about the average american? Those people never do anything unless there's at least 5 zeroes at the end of the paycheck. It also makes me sick that he's promising tax breaks to the super rich (=celebs) so obviously they go and canvas for him. The average american unfortunately is a braindead douchebag and will not see through this.
- formerteenager, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1Clearly you haven't been doing your research; "Reverse Bush Tax Cuts for the Wealthy: Obama will protect tax cuts for poor and middle class families, but he will reverse most of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest taxpayers." Doesn't look like a promised tax break to me.
- alanr19, on 02/10/2008, -2/+1Thats ***** talk to fool idiots like you. Do you think its poor people who are donating his sudden new found millions?
He got desperate and took the money in exchange for promises of tax breaks (corporate and for super wealthy individuals) He might as well have said "Read my lips, no new taxes." We all know what happened then. All politicians are liars, wise the ***** up.- EtherGnat, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1"Do you think its poor people who are donating his sudden new found millions?"

- alanr19, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2His whole campaign is about big talk of change, confidence, "we can win", no policies of any sort (at least not publically) but yet all this money comes flooding in. You seem too stupid to ask "from where?"
- JavanSClark, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2Paul spam. They're still pretty butt hurt after the beating they took on Tuesday. 0/22. That's gotta hurt.

- kurtergad87, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6These speeches are always just generalized statements that simply intend to boost morale. It could easily be likened to a religious preaching giving a sense of unity for the choir.
Saying he has no accomplishments based only on your experience of those speeches is, however, fairly dumb. He is an experienced politician and was one of the sole voices of reason just before the invasion of Iraq. Many of his policies and plans actually sound feasible and his ability to consult people like Lawrence Lessig shows he doesn't just pander to nepotism (unlike many other politicians like Bush). - 0xception, on 02/09/2008, -0/+8I really dont understand people like you who are actually expecting substance in a campaign speech (specially those given after a race, which are normally just victory speeches or rallies to keep the people motivated) If you want substance you have to look at their records, what they've said in the past, their websites for detailed plans, etc.... speeches aren't long enough to give in depth details, statistics, facts, graphs and all that lovely stuff you seem to be craving.
- hapagolucky, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3I'd say some janitors may be more suited to be CEO than some actual CEO's. A janitor may show more empathy when a company is faced with massive layoffs. At the very least he can put a face to the person who just lost his job.
- iainc, on 02/10/2008, -0/+3Hardly likely to enumerate his policies in a keynote. Get onto his web site if you want that info. It's pretty comprehensive. It's not hard to educate yourself, that is if you're *really* interested.

what really blew me away is when my father, an old cop and two time bush supporter, started listening to obama. the years of bush have worn down dad's support of the war and republican policies. he, like most republicans, really just wants to be proud of the country. obama, despite being a democrat, can inspire that pride without the arrogance of the neocons.
is obama perfect? no. but if he can dent my cynicism and get my dad to think about crossing over, then we've got something new and exciting on our hands.- HellDonut, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2Well put. Reading Newt's comments, it's obvious he's more worried with just having a Republican in power no matter what the cost, instead of the country having a real leader who inspires people. Instead of being worried that the GOP should "unite" so Obama won't win, he should have worried about having a candidate worth of votes, and one who can lead a nation instead of just represent his party.
- KillerStone, on 02/09/2008, -1/+11Not all black people are African American. Its okay to say black.
- sougly, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Who said it wasn't ok?
- ZenMojo, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Except, he IS African-American, so it's a moot point.
- kprooney, on 02/10/2008, -8/+2once again who gives a *****?
- smokingskull, on 02/10/2008, -0/+5Even though I'm not from America I hope Obama gets in. He wants to shake up Washington and get rid of Americas repuration as a bully and a country who's ignorant and doesn't understand or care about other countries. I think he''ll be good for everyone and a change is what's needed. Hope the voters get behind him when it really counts.
- psdabfm, on 02/10/2008, -8/+2Kudos to Sen. Obama for supporting our withdrawal from Iraq. Shame on him for supporting universal health care. Obama is one of the most liberal Senators out there people! Even if you are a liberal, surely you wouldn't want someone so far to the left! Who's going to pay for everyone to have health care? Who's going to pay the $4000 per year in tuition for every college student? Obama talks about Washington being broken, but then he wants to expand its role! There is only 1 candidate who wants YOU to decided what to do with your money. Don't vote for Obama and then complain about the outrageous cost of health care in a couple years!
Ron Paul 2008- HellDonut, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2What are you talking about? He's not for universal health care. It's actually one of the biggest differences between his policies and Hillary Clinton's.
- psdabfm, on 02/10/2008, -2/+0Oh, I'm so sorry. He just wants to require every parent to purchase health insurance for their kids. That will work great, since the same parents can't afford the insurance anyways. So what will happen? The government will step in and pay for their health insurance, I can't wait. I notice you still didn't explain where the money will come from when bashing my comment.

- rdoger6424, on 02/10/2008, -3/+1All these Obama articles make me ask one thing: Do the RSS feeds track your ignored sections? I just might make this one my first.
(obama 08, but if I keep on seeing the other rabid supporters, I might not like him so much) - powerfullogic, on 02/10/2008, -4/+3All stories about Obama must be dugg. All stories about Clinton must be buried.
- macjaeh, on 02/10/2008, -0/+3Welcome to a new era of American politics.
- TomJoad, on 02/10/2008, -4/+2real punks dont vote in bourgeois elections
- Tatalp, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0Real punks don't judge the personal decisions of other punks.
- FiestyPumpkin, on 02/10/2008, -0/+0He is the one who talks about a Pluralistic society. He believes in trying to iron out our differences by starting from common ground and working outwards instead of focusing on our differences from the start. That, in my opinion, is a much better way to go because you tend to tick people off by picking apart their beliefs.
- derekbender, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2he's one of those candidates that can cross party lines to unit people from everywhere
- rpggm, on 02/10/2008, -1/+1Where is his policy? I want to see hard proof of how he plans to change America around. He may be a damn good speaker and a person that can motivate people, but I need to know 'how' he plans on doing this. My vote is up for gamble, and I need more information. I want to see exactly what he is proposing and why he is better than Ms. Clinton.
- joeanon, on 02/10/2008, -6/+3I think more importantly it shows that the masses aren't qualified to know if a candidate it good or not, but rather follow the media.
OBAMA HASN'T MADE HIMSELF CLEAR ON ANY ISSUES
what don't you people grasp about that. He alludes that he will compromise with conservative ideals and he compares himself to Reagan.
He doesn't have one original idea, no solutions, no details. Only vague promises. I'd like him to be a great president, but face reality...
If Obama had a plan, he would have announced the details by now.
He is just another clueless politician taking on a job he honestly doesn't have the qualifications for.- EtherGnat, on 02/10/2008, -0/+4"OBAMA HASN'T MADE HIMSELF CLEAR ON ANY ISSUES"

- z28com, on 02/10/2008, -3/+2Misinformed voters vote for Obama. People who are IN THE KNOW vote for this guy once they have done the research on Google for his name: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG2PUZoukfA EVERYTHING in that video makes total sense.
- ZenMojo, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1We're all itching for a Minarchist Theocrat for president.
- DaveySK, on 02/10/2008, -0/+0Yes, you are right, after 7 years of Bush people should vote for another gun loving christian conservative. A man that opposes immigrants, separation of church and state, the choice women have, same-sex marriage and affirmative action. On top of it all he could be a racist if that newsletter thing is true. Get over Ron Paul, he won't make this candidacy, it's only for McCain to lose and Huckabee to win if anything.
- kd1s, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2I have to say it, Obama has the biggest buzz on the Internet and it's actually translating into reality. It really is amazing. I hope he's our next President, I really hope so.
- joinusnow, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1I will support him
- NorthwestWolf, on 02/10/2008, -0/+0He seems to have the "hope" and "change" patter down a bit better than the usual suspects, but I'm not hearing anything that gets my attention at all. Combine that with his views on gun control...no thanks. I won't use my vote in hopes of a shinier version of the same old Democratic rhetoric and lack of any solid plans paired with lack of insight.
- Merp08, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Yes! After eight years of this ***** this is EXACTLY what we need. I can't believe this is really happening after everything that's happened. Thank God.
