tuaw.com — this key suggests that hackers are closer to creating compliant IPA application bundles for home-brew iTunes distribution.
- 5602 diggs
- digg it
- PaulPinfield, on 01/29/2008, -5/+263Bet it changes...
- Yashar, on 01/29/2008, -54/+18It would be good if it did. That key is there to help prevent people from installing malicious programs onto your iPod Touch / iPhone via iTunes. Glad people found it and all, but this just compromised security for the future SDK.
- jjesusfreak01, on 01/29/2008, -5/+27And also the security for Apples full control of which programs make it to the iphone, and which dont.
- thcobbs, on 01/29/2008, -18/+20I'm sorry... but its their hardware.
Congrats on breaking their security features, but damn.... don't make them sound like the Devil for wanting to protect their hardware from bad programmers.- theblooms, on 01/29/2008, -6/+36No, it's not THEIR hardware. It's MY hardware. It's their SOFTWARE.
- jakem1, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11Proper APIs protect hardware from malicious programmers - not keys and licenses. This is just Apple up to their old "we'll control everything and charge a fortune for it" tricks again.
Besides, once you've bought the phone it belongs to you. All those iPhone apps suddenly look a lot less interesting. - thcobbs, on 01/29/2008, -5/+8Like I said... more power to you on hour hacking. Just don't go get pissy when they won't warranty it because you tried to access something they didn't want you to through their firmware.
- betterth, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7thcobbs, you just changed your arguement from "It's their hardware" to "they won't warranty it".
That's goofy, first off, because mod communities are LONG used to breaking warranty to mod their devices. Cars, consoles, etc all have their warranties screwed up in one way or another by modifying them.
This isn't a new concept, and you aren't the first (or ten millionth) prick to say "OMG DON'T CRY WHEN YOU VOID YOUR WARRANTY"
The funniest part is, of course, for those of us who just jailbreak and install apps and don't try to unlock or anything, our changes are completely and totally revertible to stock by iTunes itself. So our warranties, as long as we refresh, will never be in question.
But hey, continue trying to rain on the parade. I'm sure you'll make someone feel bad sooner or later. - bot001220, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Now he's backpedaling. "It's their hardware... wanting to protect their hardware from bad programmers."
Gotcha. - Iwantawii, on 01/29/2008, -2/+3"This isn't a new concept, and you aren't the first (or ten millionth) prick to say "OMG DON'T CRY WHEN YOU VOID YOUR WARRANTY""
I was enjoying the debate going back and forth about who has rights to what. But then you had to go ahead and start calling names and throw the whole conversation down the *****. Way to go.
- thcobbs, on 01/29/2008, -18/+20I'm sorry... but its their hardware.
- rompom7, on 01/29/2008, -4/+26So I guess you are against modchips and softmods for gaming consoles as well?
- Osjpr, on 01/29/2008, -26/+5You are a ***** moron Yashar. I don't give a ***** who installs software on my phone. I do care about who is PREVENTING me from doing so.
- crammaz, on 01/29/2008, -11/+17Cool can I install some software then....
Seriously, my ipod touch works just fine without spyware, malware ect ect and I would like it to stay that way, if you want to hack your device then go for it but it should not be to the detrement of regular users who just want their device to work as promised...- l33tspam, on 01/29/2008, -5/+16then dont install any software from 3rd parties...i dont see your argument.
- MacParrot, on 01/29/2008, -3/+20The only moron is someone who invites unknown software to be installed on their devices...
The more you know...- VictoryGin, on 01/29/2008, -1/+16But it'll turn my cursors into butterflies!!!
- MacParrot, on 01/29/2008, -1/+8Really? Then it's totally worth it then.
- bigsteve, on 01/29/2008, -5/+2They didn't let us on the internet during study hall when I was in high school...
- crammaz, on 01/29/2008, -11/+17Cool can I install some software then....
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8Third party testers signing drivers or programs is nothing new. However, usually, this would create a warning on install, or perhaps require higher privileges to install the code. Not to block the will of the user to install unsigned code. Meet trusted platform nonsense vs. security signing.
- lostboy, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2Yashar is correct in one respect, considering iTunes is a trusted platform (ie. you allow it to upload programs to your iphone/ipod because its been signed by apple) it is much easier to install programs that you don't know are malicious if the key is available.
- betterth, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Right, because I'm sure it'll be easy to have a malicious program installed into Apple's servers for distrubution over the iTunes network with the iPhone key. Oh wait...
No, iTunes is not at risk, and nor are users who only use iTunes. Stop making things up, kthx.
Apple controls what is listed in iTunes completely, and no one will be able to list malicious programs (whether or not they can be installed now thanks to this key) in iTunes.
- betterth, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Right, because I'm sure it'll be easy to have a malicious program installed into Apple's servers for distrubution over the iTunes network with the iPhone key. Oh wait...
- starkruzr, on 01/29/2008, -1/+4I just don't care about "security" anywhere near as much as I care about flexibility and feature-richness. There is an important difference between an iPhone and a computer: if the iPhone becomes compromised, it can easily be fixed by re-imaging the phone. This is not anywhere NEAR as easily done on a computer, but it is a foolproof virus fix.
- capiCrimm, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2so when I install a program that continually dials 1900-numbers in south america you're going to be cool with that?
- jjesusfreak01, on 01/29/2008, -5/+27And also the security for Apples full control of which programs make it to the iphone, and which dont.
- EBFoxbat, on 01/29/2008, -3/+51no kidding... 1.1.4 any second now.
- redwallhp, on 01/29/2008, -2/+25So actually the code is more like guidelines, then?
- sbrown, on 01/29/2008, -13/+1Look at my profile icon!
- Iwantawii, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2look at mine
- PaulPinfield, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1No, look at mine! It's Bollie the cat...
- nontitle, on 01/30/2008, -2/+1Guys, look at my profile icon!!! Isn't it awesome???
- spudlyo, on 01/29/2008, -1/+10You guys don't get it. This could be key to sign baseband updates, which the baseband bootloader verifies. The bootloaders don't get changed during software updates. If you have an older iPhone it has the 3.9 baseband bootloader which has a bug in it that allows you to hack the radio in the iPhone. If you have a newer iPhone it has the 4.x baseband bootloader and you're ***** outta luck. This key could potentially allow everyone to unlock their phone.
- PaulPinfield, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4Whatever that means, I'm impressed.

- Apoc, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Yes but as of the time the code came out, there was nothing companies could do to change the code on discs that had already been pressed and shipped to stores.

- IEatHamburgers, on 01/29/2008, -1/+13For another revolt to occur Apple would have to try and force Digg to take them down. But given that every damn Apple fanboy seems to appear here, alienating them by doing that would be more damaging to Apple than dropping a nuke on the iPhone factory. I don't see that happening.
- MacParrot, on 01/29/2008, -1/+10As said earlier, this is unimportant. All Apple has to do is change the code via an update. This isn't physical media which has to be locked down to keep backwards compatibility. Digg needs a new category called "meh"

Loving the iphone is cool in a mainstream way.
Hating the iphone is cool in a counterculture way.
Personally, I find the poser-***** counterculture way much worse. At least us fans who love the iphone admiit that we are shamelessly in love with the device. You however, claim some kind of ***** highground where you pretend to be better than us.
Your steriotypical "rebellious" hatred for this device is in NO WAY different than our love for it, you just won't admit that you're just as much of a "sheep" following a popular trend.

Basically no matter what you like, someone can either say
a) You're just jumping on the mainstream bandwagon.
or b) You're just trying to be a rebel who knows more than the average person. - betterth, on 01/30/2008, -1/+2@Punkrampant

- winnch, on 01/29/2008, -4/+70Isn't this all a moot point once Apple's SDK comes out? I can tell you, just like Linux, 97% of the population won't really care about all this work once they can have polished, well-working, hack-free, well-designed apps from developers.

- Qumahlin, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1You don't need the key to do that.
- betterth, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2I disagree. The homebrew apps I have are really well made, and small developers more than likely are not going to have access to the device.
If Apple allows small time developers full unfettered access to the SDK and control over pricing (aka, free) than this scene is dead.
If the much more likely plan (only software development firms have access to the SDK to create products for sale over iTunes) happens, than most likely half of the apps for sale won't be as imaginative or useful as the ones we already have for free.- kuwan, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2This is all moot until Apple officially announces something. There's no evidence that small developers will be closed out from the SDK. Nor that applications will only be available for sale over iTunes. I think that the SDK will be free and allow anyone to develop apps for the iPhone. Of course I have nothing to back this up just as no one else has anything to back up the assumption that the SDK won't be free. We'll find out soon enough.
- sinrtb, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1based on how much apple has fought with hackers to stop the public from writing their own programs for the iphone i would be pretty sure that they are not going to turn around and say oh never mind here you guys go.

- Spuy767, on 01/29/2008, -10/+5Because this would allow developers to give their apps "Apple's Blessing" and allow them to be installed via iTunes without submitting to apple first. Without this code, any potential third party applications has to be sentto apple first for approval.

- chuckpenzone, on 01/29/2008, -7/+6Like 2 % of the iPhone population is going to install uncertified Apple apps. Hardly worth development efforts when you could go legit and make money selling a real app.

- spudlyo, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1This isn't about apps. The baseband software which controls the radio in the iPhone is also signed and verified by the baseband bootloader. If that is the key they've found, it means we can hack the ***** out of the radio on the iPhone
- Qumahlin, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2No the key that was found has nothing to do with the baseband. As for "hacking the ***** out of the radio"..to accomplish what? People have been freely able to modify the radio software in nextel phones for years and the only hacks that came out of it involved cloning phones...so quite frankly short of committing fraud there is no reason to want to "hack the ***** out of the radio"
- spudlyo, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1And you know this how exactly? There is a lot of speculation as to what this key actually is for, as the people who leaked it didn't actually say. To accomplish what? Well first off, if you have a 1.1.2 OTB iPhone, you have a version of the baseband bootloader (4.x) which is resistant to software hacking. The earlier iPhones have version 3.9 of the baseband bootloader, which has a bug which allows you to circumvent the signature checks, allowing you to upload custom baseband code, to do stuff like make the radio work with any cellular carrier. If the leaked key is used to sign baseband software updates, it means people who have newer iPhones can unlock it without resorting to hardware hacks.

- starkruzr, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2Is going. To fail. This is part of the reason people hack the iPhone: a jailbroken iPhone is the closest we will likely get for the foreseeable future to an open UNIX-based mobile device.
(In B4 Nokia N700 and N8xx, which have no GSM radio, in B4 Android, which isn't out yet and which runs everything in a gimped Java sandbox)
- sigterm, on 01/29/2008, -10/+3The sdk allows you to build apps for the iphone. They could still require that you pay them to sign the app. A middle ground would be where you get a warning that you are running self-signed code and do you want to continue. Like with self signed certficates, and then for a fee you could ge apple to sign it for you. The leaked key didn't kill HD-DVD.
- teh_techie, on 01/29/2008, -12/+8When the iPhone came out, everyone was griping over the fact that it wasn't open, the fact that we can't do what we want with it. Here, we're a small step closer to that, and you whine and complain that it's susceptible to malware. NO *****!
