An open letter to iPhone owners from Steve Jobs
apple.com — We have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store.

- ingoldsby, on 10/10/2007, -86/+1631If this doesn't make you love apple you're crazy. $100 store credit or not is way above and beyond imo.
- gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -249/+62what does $100 buy you at an apple store that's worthwhile? This just makes their early adopters burn more cash on something new from the store.
More profit for Apple.- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -9/+129its cuts $100 off anything that you might want to buy. Imagine geting a nano for 49.99
- shark615, on 10/10/2007, -58/+26If you have an iPhone why the hell would you want a nano?
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36You can get probably most of that $100 back; you just have to work for it a little.
If Apple sends you a gift card, sell the card on eBay, opening bid $90.
If it's a store credit that's not transferable, then buy an iPod Nano for $149 and resell it on eBay for $139.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36You can get probably most of that $100 back; you just have to work for it a little.
- Sle3per, on 10/10/2007, -4/+90Christmas gift for a family member?

- _skin_, on 10/10/2007, -3/+51A gift for the Mrs. Maybe I can finally get some after a gift like this.
- Matteos, on 10/10/2007, -18/+2DTB
- djphatjive, on 10/10/2007, -20/+3Now im finally going to buy a apple product, wait 3 months, get digg to complain an then get a rebate. Sounds good to me.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20This happened so fast, I'm sure Jobs was planning to do this all along.
Plus, it protects them from class-action lawsuits over the price drop. I'm sure that they calculated the cost of defending themselves vs. the cost of compensating owners, and it was probably cheaper to compensate the owners.
Given that it's not unusual for Apple to have 50% margins on their products, I imagine that they are buying your silence for 50 or 60 cents on the dollar. Plus, very few things in the Apple Store sell for exactly $100, so you will probably have to spend more in order to use up the credit, and Apple wins again.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20This happened so fast, I'm sure Jobs was planning to do this all along.
- ParticleMan420, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1actually you'd be getting the nano for $149 since you got shafted for an extra $200 to begin with, $100 of which you dont get back.
- shark615, on 10/10/2007, -58/+26If you have an iPhone why the hell would you want a nano?
- e1en0r, on 10/10/2007, -4/+59Some iPhone accessories, an iTunes gift card, or an iPod shuffle for starters.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+80More profit for Apple. Less I have to pay for toys. I'm not sure I see the problem here.
- gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Point is I get to pay less :)
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -6/+9You actually only get to pay less if you were going to buy one in the first place. Were you? If not, then no you don't have a point
- hiPpymIck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9id say its pretty genius marketing
- early adopters like $100 back @$499
- a heck of a lot of ppl will now buy it for christmas @$399
- you can still enjoy enjoy the touch screen experience with the ipod touch @$299
..but they do make desirable stuff so..cant complain
at least valleywag are a bit sarcastic anyway

I'm going to go ask my iPhone-owning friend if he'd be so kind as to give me a rebate. I could use a discounted touch. :)
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Yeah. Apple sure knows what they're doing. I'm going to go ask my iPhone-owning friend if he'd be so kind as to give me a rebate. I could use a discounted touch. :)
- gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Point is I get to pay less :)
- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -6/+86You could have an iPod shuffle, the iWork suite or the iLife suite, the sweet new aluminum wireless keyboard... all of those are just $79. You could pick up some RAM, some in-ear sound isolating headphones, I don't know, there's tons of stuff.
It's a free gift that you weren't expecting when you first bought an iPhone.
Considering that Apple runs a business, not a charity, I'd say that's pretty damn good.- MrVandemar, on 10/10/2007, -59/+12It is NOT a free gift. You are actually paying $200 for $100 worth of stuff. Tell me where the "Free" in that is? Reality is most stores have a price matching guarantee that lasts for so long after you purchase an item. Apple waited long enough that none of them would apply for the first time buyers. And if you believe the price change was some spur of the moment thing, you are most likely mistaken. I'm sure they had the price cut worked out in advance. Hit them hard at the beginning, lower the price a few months later to get the hold outs.
- moofer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Then I'll take yours if you don't like it.
- LordSubtle, on 10/10/2007, -4/+38Talk about looking the gift horse in the mouth. Technology prices go down over time, apple isnt entilted to give anything to anyone. They dont have to do this and they are.
- nicko68, on 10/10/2007, -31/+92 months after release? Apple took advantage of the overhype and enthusiasm, plain and simple, by gouging the early adopters. And why not $200 store credit?
- TheReport, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9"2 months after release? Apple took advantage of the overhype and enthusiasm, plain and simple, by gouging the early adopters. And why not $200 store credit?"
You don't seem to get the point, sure Apple took advantage of the overhype and enthusiasm as any other company for profit would the difference between those companies and this company is this company want to make a profit but also try to do the right thing for its customers so that everyone is happy. The only other company I can think of that probably live by this standard is Google. I'm thankful that I'm getting anything back. Apple didn't have to do ***** but instead their conscious outweighed their greed
- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31Free gift or not, I'm happy as a pig in pope *****.

- TheKorn2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25I don't really like apple as a rule, and I still think this is a good thing. It's *never* good to screw your early adopters that hard.
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I don't know, Apple's early adopters really never seem to mind, Historically anyone who has been a apple early adopter for the past 20 years has been screwed over more than we can remember, its easy to forget about apple's flubups, its also easy to forget there was someone out there that paid a $2,495 for an original mac, when the price really should have been 1500.
- dajuggernaut, on 10/10/2007, -6/+33Mac OSX Leopard Super Ultimate Premium Edition = $99.00
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -38/+3Apple doesn't release multiple versions of their OS. At least not in the sense of Windows.
Sure there's Jaguar, and then Panther, and Tiger, and now Leopard, but those are major improvements, they're not 'premium edition' type of versions.- saleem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+41please take your sarcasm detector to geek squad for repair.
- TheKrillr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21That was his point. Mocking Microsofts super-expensive "Ultimate" edition for $300 when mac os is $99 will all features (and more features than vista really).
And yes, I do run Vista. I know all of its features. Mac OS X I still prefer. Im not just being a fanboy. - BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11duck!.........whoooooooosh
- BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11@mywhitenoise, obviously you are not aware that when Steve Jobs rolled out Leopard during a big speech, he personally announced that Leopard would come in several versions, including premium and ultimate (crowd groans)...and that they would all cost $129 (crowd cheers, realizing Steve meant there is only one OS X and it does everything). Yes, the comment you are nervous about was based on Steve Jobs's own joke on Microsoft.
- moofer, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3Herein lies the humor, douchebag.
- Dsn989, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Try $129.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
another Apple mass rape and still the apple zombies like it!- 16x9, on 10/10/2007, -3/+40Apple could have offered a new car and oral sex to every early adopter and I don't think rolosworld's message would have changed one bit.
Apple is far from a perfect company but I think what they are now doing goes way above the call of duty. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27Thank God I don't live in rolosworld. It sounds a little nuts in there.
- Dokkodo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7He hates himself.
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -14/+6Make no mistake about it. This isn't caring about customers. This is about damage limitation. A lot of people were angry and Apple looked in a bad shape. They had to do something to keep the loyal fanbase.
- shorn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6And they did so in record time, with no whining ,and with no defensiveness. If not moral, they are at least smart in execution of their self-interest. I find that praiseworthy.
- xmkatx, on 10/10/2007, -12/+4I like Apple products (except for their ipods, my nano's battery died after 1.5 years) but what rolosworld is saying is RIGHT. Apple fanboys are just digging down :T
- ParticleMan420, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1so true.
you pay $600 for an iphone, they drop the price by $200 10 weeks later, then they give you $100 credit at their store (money they dont have to give you back).
so, you're still getting shafted for $100, are forced to spend $100 at their store, which will inspire you to actually spend more in the store, because a $50 nano is a good deal (w/ the credit), so you dont get anything back and end up spending more.
apple is such a NICE company!
w/ friends like that, etc etc- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7That was dumb. They announced the $600 price back in January. You had six months to make that decision before it went on sale. Then, two months after they ship the thing, they drop the price to $400 and give all early adopters $100 credit in their store. So not only should you have nothing to complain about because you made an informed decision to spend $600 on your iPhone at launch, but you're getting half the difference back, only costing you $100 to be an early adopter. That $100 bought you two months worth of use of the iPhone, for something you originally agreed to pay full price on. Seriously, I don't know what kind of twisted sense of entitlement of lack of personal responsibility would make some people think Apple was obligated to give them $100 back, let alone $200. Your time with the iPhone was definitely worth SOMETHING...
- killgore7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Particleman is an idiot.
- 16x9, on 10/10/2007, -3/+40Apple could have offered a new car and oral sex to every early adopter and I don't think rolosworld's message would have changed one bit.
- 99thPercentile, on 10/10/2007, -16/+1I agree with you 100%! Getting $100 off from a company that routinely overcharges you 25% for simply joining the Apple cult is a great deal for them and of marginal value to the consumer. In any case, I could care less either way since Apple holds no sway over my life or wallet.
- scrag10, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4Just a way of tricking ignorant fanboys into liking the brand even more.
- raytibbitts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, I am very sneaky, Mr. Deeds.
Try to trick yourself into liking yourself.
- raytibbitts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, I am very sneaky, Mr. Deeds.
- 80hd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Fine if you don't like $100 credits for apple give me a few
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -9/+129its cuts $100 off anything that you might want to buy. Imagine geting a nano for 49.99
- drjones78, on 10/10/2007, -29/+169Well, I still stand by my statements that all of you bitching about the price drop because you chose to be an early adopter are being childish and unreasonable.
That being said.. thanks. I'll now have $200 store credit.- jamesallen74, on 10/10/2007, -23/+49Agreed. Would it kill people to wait a freakin month before they go ape-s**t over some new technology? They shouldn't get a $100 credit. They buy right away, they assume the risk.
- r69er87, on 10/10/2007, -22/+3shut the ***** up
- Fragger404, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Actually james, I did wait a month and a half... bought my phone 16 days ago. I waited just in case there were bugs to be worked out and to see how demand on the product would be... and I'm still out the money.
- TheKorn2, on 10/10/2007, -8/+43You bought two iphones?
- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+85I did too. It's part of the liability of having a wife :-(
"If I don't get one of those, you're not getting any more of this -> (_|_)"- jackyyll, on 10/10/2007, -5/+83Why does your wife have parenthesis ?
- Radian, on 10/10/2007, -17/+10Your wife sounds like a real piece of work.
- litkaj, on 10/10/2007, -21/+11So she's basically a prostitute then, right? I hope she was at least being literal about the body part you drew...
- jalo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33Forget parenthesis jackyyll, Why does she have a pipe up her a**?

- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+85I did too. It's part of the liability of having a wife :-(
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25I agree. I have always waited 3-6 months to buy just about any new tech gadget just for that reason. There has never been a case where I absolutely need something the day it comes out. If it did, then I would expect to pay a premium. That said, it is a great PR move by Apple.
- Thorsten, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3I see that is oter way around, except if you mean a totally new gadget, because with the iPhone your probably right.
But with any other Mac product if I buy a new one, I wait fo rthe latest release and then get it.
That way I have the newest and best product from Apple for the longest period of time before a new release.- MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yikes. As a Mac owner for many, many years, I gotta tell you, you shouldn't do that. ALWAYS wait about a month. Seriously.
Kids these days ... - WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Thorsten does have a point. Apple has very strict price controls, and at the beginning of their product cycles, those prices are typically very competitive, but towards the end of the product cycle, the prices are typically not very competitive. As long as it's not a dramatically new product (with increased potential for bugs), I always try to buy my Macs at the start of their product cycle, for maximum value. That's the whole point behind the 'Buyer's Guide' section over at Macrumors.com...
- raytibbitts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I see lobsters...
the otter way around.
- MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yikes. As a Mac owner for many, many years, I gotta tell you, you shouldn't do that. ALWAYS wait about a month. Seriously.
- m3mn0n, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yup. I only do that for games and DVDs.
Halo 2 Limited Edition. I waited in line for 3 hours for that. Still play it to this day. Price went down but like I care? It was under $100.- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1For me, I buy them during their first week releases if I really want to get them. There are usually sales at Best Buy, Fry's Electronics, etc. Pricematching helps too.
- Thorsten, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3I see that is oter way around, except if you mean a totally new gadget, because with the iPhone your probably right.
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6For me, I go longer like years if possible. I like support, stability, and cheaper prices.
- ParticleMan420, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1oh, so you dont use apple then? smart man!
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have an old 15" PowerBook G4 1 Ghz.

- themarq, on 10/10/2007, -175/+34Really? Maybe I'm on crazy pills here, but iPhone purchasers were gouged for $200 and as way of apology they're being offered a $100 credit (not a refund) to get more Apple stuff. THAT is considered fair and equitable?
With all due respect to apple fans; you've been blinded and bamboozled.- iashraf, on 10/10/2007, -112/+20Anyone digging "themarq's" comment down is a ***** *****.
- shank2001, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21I logged in just to dig your comment DOWN as well as "themarq". How do you like dem apples? I don't even own an iphone, and I think this goes above and beyond what anyone should expect from a company. Apple you really impressed me with this move, good job. I do own a 4th generation ipod, but that is all from Apple that I currently own, but I am sure that is going to change. Especially if Apple keeps up the incredible work on pleasing their customers!
- Alfdog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Dear Mr. Internet Tough Guy,

- ParticleMan420, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1"Anyone digging "themarq's" comment down is a ***** *****."
well, isnt that the definition of Mac Fanboy?
it obviously is, judging by all the bitter little fanboy down digging.
they dont like when things make sense and make their god look bad.
how dumb do you have to be to not see how being shafted for $200 but being 'repaid' $100 is a GREAT thing that shows how gracious Lord Jobs is.
- kazersoza, on 10/10/2007, -3/+30You pay for bleeding edge. ... that has been a fact of technology. So the credit is a great move on the part of Apple or any company that does such an action.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -7/+7Please digg me down as I've never heard of a 33% price drop 2 months after debut... maybe they should've waited a little before sending the shareholders running (Apple had a share drop right after the announcement, its expected to level off and rise up later again though). Not to mention the new iPod Touch comes out at the same time...
I don't know, it just makes me lose confidence in buying any Apple products immediately. It just teaches everyone to wait a few months before buying any new Apple products because you'll get bit if you do.

- stubear, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6Since when did two months make you an early adopter? It often takes quite a lot longer before companies make a small price drop. Apple dropped the price by 33% two months after it was released. That's not being an early adopter, that's getting the shaft from Apple. Swap Microsoft for Apple and iPhone for XBOX360 and tell me if you're going to be all nice and cheerful about getting ass raped.

- mistercobber, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11all geeks should know the rule of the game, if you want to be the first kid on the block to have the latest gadget--pay the premium! it doesn't matter if the $200 price drop is now or Dec or 2008, we all see it coming. but at least Apple is willing to compensate/accomodate their customer. remember the Sony PSP launch with the dead pixel problem? did Sony even try to be nice...or Microsoft letting lose defective patch that screws up computers world wide? did they offer any of us a refund? let alone they charge you a premium to betat test every piece of software they release
- BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8"Never buy version 1.0 of anything."
Obviously there are too many early adopter newbies unclear on the concept, and think this Apple thing is something new.
Apple is being EXTREMELY generous to people who almost don't deserve it. - sleepwalkers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5*Sigh*
Apple did NOT have to give these customers *a single ***** dime* in return for them dropping the price. Considering that (without whining) they choose to almost immediately give people $100 towards anything else they want to buy is a nice move for a corporation as large and as stringent as Apple.
- iashraf, on 10/10/2007, -112/+20Anyone digging "themarq's" comment down is a ***** *****.
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -94/+30Here's my translation:
okay, you caught us. we gouged you on the price at launch because we knew you wanted it so badly. We made a lot of money from you who are loyal to us. But, we're not selling as many iphones as we hoped, so we're lowering the price to meet our goals. Of course this makes you mad, and we run our business selling high priced products to you, our faithful customers. So to quell your rage and fuel your Apple hunger, we'll give you a $100 gift certificate to use to buy more products from us, most likely leading you to spend hundreds or even thousands more on our computers or the new mp3 players that you just must have and be the first to have with which to impress your friends. We'll make much more money than we would have otherwise, and we'll keep you, our loyal fanboys buying up everything we have to sell.
P.S. I recommend buying the new 8gb nano. It's only $100 with your new store credit! And you'll help us, the company you love, end up ripping you for $300 total in the past two months while you praise us for being so kind to you.
Your pal,
Steve- surferboy, on 10/10/2007, -37/+13Here here! Of course davidrools is being dug down because he dares to have a contrary opinion of apple. Personally I couldn't agree more. Jobs should be sending you all a CHECK.
- monkeyrun, on 10/10/2007, -6/+29His comment's being dugg down because people disagree with what he said.
That's what the "digg" feature's for.- adinb, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16and daviddrools is just wrong. Price drops happen all the time, apple has more than met expectations as far as sales targets--they just decided to get aggresive in the face of the upcoming christmas season. Apple didn't have the obligation to do *jack*, but they're voluntarily eating half the price difference.
- tblasko, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Well you would think that the someone would digg a comment for its content, not whether or not it is what they agree with. Life would get boring if everyone agreed all the time.
If I ignore everything I disagree with and what everyone else has to say that doesn't fall into line with my opinion... well.. call me close-minded, or just call me George Bush
- gymbrall, on 10/10/2007, -4/+26Why does Apple *owe* these people something? He made a product and set a price and they decided it was worth it. If they were happy with their purchase two days ago, they should be happy today. Having said that, giving $100 in store credit is a smart move. But where do you get off making the statement that Apple *should* give people a check?!?!?
- monkeyrun, on 10/10/2007, -6/+29His comment's being dugg down because people disagree with what he said.
- herchenb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8gouged? it's called the "free market system". if you don't like the price, don't buy it. the vendor will then be forced to drop it to a reasonable price. $600 was reasonable because, um, people voluntarily paid it.
- blueRAP, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't be surprised if your translation is the absolute truth. Jobs has always been about building a cult like following (Just like Gates, except now it's Jobs turn to "rule") and he has clearly become an expert at doing so. He's a marketing genius.
- surferboy, on 10/10/2007, -37/+13Here here! Of course davidrools is being dug down because he dares to have a contrary opinion of apple. Personally I couldn't agree more. Jobs should be sending you all a CHECK.
- cheese06, on 10/10/2007, -18/+147Jobs is one nice guy. Why are the early adopters bitching about the price drop? You paid for that premium price so you guys could show it off the first couple months. If I were Jobs, I would not have budged. Jobs is one very nice guy
- iashraf, on 10/10/2007, -27/+143Jobs isn't a nice guy, he's a wise businessman. He knows how to manipulate the fanboys.
- da5id, on 10/10/2007, -18/+6I am quite sure that business had nothing to do with it. You are so cynical. I'm sure he did it just because he is such a nice guy.
- SingerSirCoda, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Apple is a publicly-traded company; Jobs has a responsibility to make money for his shareholders, regardless of whether he is being "nice" or not.
In this case, it worked out for our good. - appletalk, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5Well said. Jobs is not your friend
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It's amazing. When companies give people $100 and drop prices on their products, you;s think that would be seen as a GOOD THING. Would it be bette rif Apple just kept selling iPhones for $600?
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13So giving early adopters a $100 store credit is manipulation? Come on.
Everything a businessman does relating to his company is a business move; that doesn't mean he can't also be nice. Customer satisfaction is a part of running a successful business, and you have to treat customers well to have that. That equals being nice in my book.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16I didn't buy one to show it off. Not all early adopters are fanboys or tools. Some see a great product and want it, and don't see the point in waiting around to buy it later just to not be labeled an early adopter. Or should all those that inadvertently warned me not to buy a PC version of BioShock be considered early adopters and I should gripe at them for bragging about their new game?
- cheese06, on 10/10/2007, -19/+2you know, i bet most digg users wanted the iphone when it first came out, but MAYBE some people couldn't afford it at the time. now what Jobs did is screw over the Apple and tech gadget fans alike that patiently waited for the price drop. Now the early adopters have the benefit of receiving a free ipod shuffle or a 50 dollar nano.
- Audacitor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8There's just no pleasing some people, is there?
- ghoppe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7What? Do I even have to point out the blatant stupidity and illogic in this statement?
Your "patient tech fans" are still paying $200 less if they want an iphone. How does basically giving the early adopters a $100 break cause them to be "screwed over"? What sort of twisted moronic mind could even think in this way? - tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Beautiful. You used their own logic against them. Giving people $100 credit for no reason and dropping their prices should be seen as a good thing, but early adopters are jealous others now get it cheaply. So you want ahead and made the late adopters jealous the early adopters got a $100 credit. Very crafty.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7We still paid $100 (and promised to spend another $100 with Apple) to be early adopters. Anyway, I knew it was coming, so I saved up over a thousand dollars to buy one for me and one for the wife. Newcomers aren't screwed at all.
- InfiniteNothing, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19They must be new to early adopting. Early adopters always get hosed. It's the price you pay for being cool. If it wasn't so expensive, everyone would do it and then it wouldn't be cool anymore.
- TheKorn2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Well, it's more of a smart business decision than anything. If Apple did *nothing*, then next time they're announcing a new product nobody at all is going to buy it until the price drops...
...kind of like the PS3. :D- Radian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I'm not sure about that. There are always irrational first-adopters who can't exercise self-restraint.
- Fatticus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1It's not that he's a "nice guy". He's running a huge corporation; he has to make good business decisions, which is exactly what this was. This is a very cunning maneuver, and it's obvious he knows how to work consumers.
I'm not saying this is a bad thing at all. In fact, it's a really great deal, and I'm impressed at the tactic. He's gained my respect as a businessman. And it's pretty close to a win-win situation, considering we're talking about manufacturing and selling in a capitalist corporate environment where many times, one is left screwed out in the cold with no rebate at all. This way, he gets the respect and business of more customers and we get a little money back in our pockets.
And for the people saying that he could be selling his product for far cheaper, well, like I said, this is capitalism and people aren't in the business to be nice. They're in it to make money. Sure, there might be some compassion in the mix, but you can't depend on that.
By the way, I didn't buy the iPhone, and I've never had a Mac in my life.- Recusant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm sure he can sleep soundly tonight knowing that he has gained your respect, sir.
- iashraf, on 10/10/2007, -27/+143Jobs isn't a nice guy, he's a wise businessman. He knows how to manipulate the fanboys.
- thecompkid, on 10/10/2007, -14/+214Holy *****.
Seriously, is this a joke or something?
Apple, I have now become more than a loyal customer.
Wait, I get it now. I get it all. Jobs figures he pulls off all this fake drama to get the early adopters all pissed off. Then, he reveals this cunning plan to make it up to all of us, effectively making us even more happy than we were before.
Well, either way, I love it.- sholt, on 10/10/2007, -6/+104This is Apple Kool-Aid. And it tastes good.
- EllimistX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2(Farva voice) "It's delicious."
- raytibbitts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I l'ike it a'lot.
- EllimistX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2(Farva voice) "It's delicious."
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20Not really - they did the same thing with Aperture when it had a price drop. They ***** up, then they fixed it. It's not perfect, but they at least did something to make it better. No, it's not the full difference, but an effective 16% price drop is much less a slap in the face than 33%, especially given the time period. Had they done nothing, I would have understood - they didn't force anyone to buy the thing, and we all could have waited for a price drop. I don't regret paying the $599, but dropping the price by that much that quickly really was a slap in the face.
It's why I like Apple - even if they screw up, they usually do something to make it better,- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16***** UP? Beause they lowered their price, it'sa ***** UP? You're people are pathetic. For example, DELL does this all the ***** time, and you just have to deal with it. THe laptop I bought for $700 2 months ago is now $500. Did they offer me a $100 rebate? No.
- DarkSamus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0tell the people!
- ElBruelsio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And that's why Apple is a better company.
- thecompkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You just don't get this, do you?
Your Dell craptop didn't get released 2 days before you bought it.
Plus, you're still yet to tell me why Apple is a bad company for giving money back to its customers.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16***** UP? Beause they lowered their price, it'sa ***** UP? You're people are pathetic. For example, DELL does this all the ***** time, and you just have to deal with it. THe laptop I bought for $700 2 months ago is now $500. Did they offer me a $100 rebate? No.
- Thorsten, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2Well I am still quite upset at this Ringtone BS. A Buck for 30 seconds of a song you already own?
This is rediculous and I say its a business move by Apple and has nothing to do with the law whatssoever.
If its really the law I want to hear that from Apple, or somebody who really knows what they are talking about.
And explain this to me, why can I load a full mp3 on almost any othr cellphone out there and use it as a ringtone? And if that is ok under the law, but for some reason if Apple would do it not, its totally inlogical and the law should be changed. I am really upset about this than anything else.
I hope someday Apple will release the iPhone unlocked, with a full SDK and lets us hack the iPhone until I can order milk from Mars with it.- sunchild, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1It's called iTones *****.
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I think the real reason you're so upset is that you have the spelling and grammar skills of a 5th grader.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not just the spelling and grammar, but the vocabulary and simplistic ideas of a 5th grader.
- mal1964, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Poor sales drooped the price, if sales were good no price drop. they had no choice but to give some money back. A two year old could figure that out its not genius.
- sholt, on 10/10/2007, -6/+104This is Apple Kool-Aid. And it tastes good.
- debtman7, on 10/10/2007, -27/+5I had actually send an email to sjobs@apple.com which basically said the same thing as his letter, and I suggested a $100 store credit to appease those of us who helped make the phone a success. Nice to see someone listened, I'm sure a ton of us sent similar emails.
I'll take it, it does show some nice consideration. Of course I can always complain that they know we're going to go in there and buy our wives $400 iPod touches so they're just doing it to get more of our money :) - DiggzDE, on 10/10/2007, -49/+10Yeah, lets just hand out Apple Money so we can be sure to not loose hardly any profit whatsoever. Simply astounding that you would consider this a good deal. Anything worthwhile to purchase from Apple will cost over $100 dollars. A ***** credit will only increase the financial gain for Apple as customers will hand over MORE of their own cash in order to purchase additional Apple products with this lousy $100 dollar credit.
This is not a story of a company lowering the price because of cost cuts. It is a story about a company gouging their loyal customers with bloated prices for a mediocre product and then turning around and screwing them from behind by lowering the price because it is financially strategic of them to do so at the later time.- pleetonboy, on 10/10/2007, -15/+1What he said.
- LordSubtle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Or you could ebay the 100 dollar store credit for 80 bucks
- DiggzDE, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2If only... Ebay is the spawn of satan himself. And I'm beginning to think that Microsot, Apple, and Sony are his older brothers.
- thepatster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Oh please. Half the reason you can get on your computer right now and use digg is because of these companies. I mean, sure they have issues, and probly cheat us a little, but that's ok, i'm fine with that. but u have an awful view of some of these companies.
- Jones82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I could understand that complaint if it was a $20 card but $100? There's plenty of accessories and ***** you could buy and still have money left over. Also, how did they "gouge their loyal customers"? Everyone who bought an iPhone knew exactly what they were getting for the money, it's not like Apple has a monopoly on the cell phone industry.
- ZehnFoH, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0Let us digg this man down more for speaking the awful truth as it hurts us...it hurts us and our precious.

- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Apple-hatred and the general immaturity of geeks online know no bounds. Jobs did something virtually no other CEO or other company has ever done, especially not in an open letter format directly to the customers. He's proven once again that he's a unique and gifted businessman, willing to try great ideas, and willing to correct great errors.
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2like omg steve jobs is like not only the coolest guy ever but the nicest too. he's the first to do everything the best. oh please. google just gave out full refunds plus full refunds in the form of google checkout plus letting everyone keep their videos for free until the service is scratched.
yeah the $100 is better than nothing but it's really nothing praiseworthy. you're totally gettin' played and you don't even realize it. whatev. we tried. enjoy your $100 and your overpriced slow EDGE browsing no 3rd party apps running GPS deficient iphones and spend another $100 to buy youself a colorful nano. you've obviously got more money than you know how to spend wisely so go nuts.

whats your address?
- tjex, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37People like to complain. Give them $100 and they say "What, that's i?"
- brainboy77, on 10/10/2007, -21/+5this is smart. he's trying to show himself as a good guy by paying $100 bucks, yet he's stiil pocketing a hundred bucks. he still profits. man, all those disses about gates should go to him to.
- da5id, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7nobody complained when they just dropped the price of Zune
- shank2001, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6That is because there are no Zune customers to complain. They dropped the price of the Zune to try to get their first customer ;). Good luck to you Microsoft, you need it with the Zune.
- DarkSamus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0it's sad that even ms lovers won't buy zune, they should just call it *****
- ParticleMan420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1they didnt charge $600 for it then drop the price by $200 10 weeks later either.
- mikev, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You're stupid. Of course they profit, Apple is still a company. You didn't have to get your $100 bucks back, hell; I'm pretty sure 80% of the other companies out there wouldn't have done the same.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have never seen a company give credit to early adopters just because they dropped the price. This is a first.
- AceTracer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2He's pocketing a little more than that. Even if everyone uses the $100 coupon, and they won't, and even if everyone buys tangible goods that cost Apple money to produce (meaning no software or services), and they won't, then they're still only losing about 30-50 bucks on wholesale costs.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3He could've easily pocketed $200 from every early adopter, but didn't.
- da5id, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7nobody complained when they just dropped the price of Zune
- Crisender111, on 10/10/2007, -26/+6O God...look at these Apple suckers. They jus refuse to accept they got screwed a 100 bucks. LOL
Have some sense. Wht else wud apple do if it cuts price this big this soon?
"No one does this in the tech industry. Steve you the man"
No one does this in the tech industry. Apple needs to save face with its early adopters. No big company with a big product cuts off price this early.
So all of you....just accept....u drained ur 100 bucks. Apple snitched u once again.- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Did you get an XBox 360 when it first came out? Or any other consumer electronics product that later dropped in price. Apple didn't HAVE to do anything. They could of remained silent giving a big FU to early adopters. Instead they have $100 back to purchase some other Apple gear. I'm not saying that it doesn't suck for those that bought one before the drop because it does. However, Apple owed them nothing.
- corripio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Was that English? I don't understand what you were trying to type there. It seemed like some important letters were missing there and coherent thought.

- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Own an XBox or PS2? How much did Microsoft or Sony give you back when they dropped the prices on those? The length of time between the drops means little. - apotropaic, on 10/10/2007, -19/+4so the money he is giving you goes right back to spending on apple instead of actually money back? douche!
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Apple has no obligation at all to give any previous iPhone owners anything. The fact that they are giving such a big credit, even if it is just for the Apple store, is above and beyond what was expected of them.
- TheReport, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah because the early adopters of a product this expenisve are not Apple loyalist in the first place, so they would never want to spend their money other apple products.
The way i see it everyone wins in this situation

Oh, and we're not even speaking to all the free publicity, fanboys creaming themselves over how much they love Steve's passion for them.
You guys have been owned, and you don't even know it.- ThinkBox, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11It's 100$ that wont come out of my pocket, that could have come out of my pocket. That math works just fine for me. if around 1 mil people bought an iPhone, they are giving away 100mil in store merch... stfu, that is still a nice gesture when they dont have to do anything.
- leonbev, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4You're missing Cliff's point. Half of the people who originally overpaid for the iPhone will never bother to claim for the rebate, and the half that do will probably buy $100 of iPhone accessories that cost Apple about $25 to produce.
That "100 million" dollar rebate offer seems a lot less impressive now, doesn't it?- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No, you ***** idiot. Yes, they're a business, but they're still giving out $100. Just because most people won't redeem rebates, does that mean it;s better for me if I buy something at full price with no rebate? You seem to only be satisfied if Apple will lose money. That's idiotic. They have no responsibility to give the early adopters anything. Instead, they choose to give them $100 to spend at the Apple store.
- SniperX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@tech42er - You sound like more of an idiot than leonbev. He was just pointing out what cliffzdude said, which makes some sense, but not entirely.
OBVIOUSLY Apple realizes they won't be 'losing' out on exactly 100 million dollars, so anyone pointing this out is wasting their time and should not feel special for pointing out the obvious. Though even losing out on 12.5 million dollars is a tough hit (50% ppl redeem the credit, and buy accessories at 75% mark up)
- leonbev, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4You're missing Cliff's point. Half of the people who originally overpaid for the iPhone will never bother to claim for the rebate, and the half that do will probably buy $100 of iPhone accessories that cost Apple about $25 to produce.

I, however, totally agree with you. This thread is just overrun with Apple fanboys. It makes me sad :(
I would be more impressed if it wasn't store credit for more Apple product, although that is what companies usually do and IS a smart move for profit.
Still, I would just prefer a check and use it for groceries :T - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4If you followed Apple news at all, you'd know that in the next few quarters Apple is lowering margins. That's why the new iPods are cheaper than the old mostly, or offer many more upgrades.
Considering Apple didn't have to do anything, this is more than generous no matter what the margins are.
- ThinkBox, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11It's 100$ that wont come out of my pocket, that could have come out of my pocket. - cleaton, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3If I'm not remembering wrong, but didn't Microsoft do something similar when they had a huge price cut on their Xbox?. I don't really see this as something spectacular. I was rather expecting Apple to care about their first supporters.
- ZehnFoH, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Pretty much. This is nothing new in business. But it is Apple so of course it's some GLORIOUS NEW GENIUS MARKETING STRATEGY THAT ONLY THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD HIMSELF STEVEN JOBS COULD CONCEIVE OF!!!
Ahem...

- northernmunky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1whats ***** about their advertising exactly?
- Vermifax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Let's review....
You hate Apple. You comment on Apple stories (a lifestyle choice, I'm sure.)
I hate Microsoft. I don't comment on Microsoft stories. I might've submitted one story months ago about how some university was changing all of the campus PCs to Macs during the 'Vista Outrage".
When you don't like something, avoid it completely and get over it.
You are a conflicted individual and you need to make your peace with the fact that you are a closet Mac-user.
- SuperWinner, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2Mac will never have widespread adoption because only 10% of the population is gay.
- Vermifax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I counted about seven times that you've posted this same comment on various Apple stories. You're a sad boy, Karl.
- r0ryb0ryalis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Oh wow, your comment has 1337 diggs! Should I ruin it? Ehhhh...choices...=[
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I don't exactly love Apple, but I saw Steve Jobs in an interview yesterday on CNBC and for some reason, I kinda love the guy now, even though I don't currently have any apple product. But don't worry, I'll be waiting in line for an Ipod Touch, and in some months I'll buy myself a Mac.....
ohhh god, what have I become!!?? - MasterDwarf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Jobs knows the deal. It's only going to cost the company a quarter of that,, or less. They'll still show a plus. Gotta hand it to him on this one.
- jetsetter883, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2why couldn't the douchebag just give them $100 cash?

- coolrecep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You Apple customers are so stupid that even I can not imagine....
- gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -249/+62what does $100 buy you at an apple store that's worthwhile? This just makes their early adopters burn more cash on something new from the store.
- seraph582, on 11/08/2007, -43/+412Jesus Jobs strikes again
- haterrade, on 10/10/2007, -38/+11there is such an absolute ***** double standard applied to apple and microsoft on digg it's unbelievable, you guys would burn down Gates' house if he pulled something like this
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Most apt Digg moniker ever :p Keep drinking!
- philippbock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12At least we can all rest assured that no-one is ever going to burn down Bill Gates’ house then …
- volonix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh snap!
- volonix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1*****, double post. I blame communists.
- TheSolomon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14So when has Bill Gates issued me a store credit after a price cut? Wait, when has Bill Gates ever given such a price cut to be apologetic for? It might be a double standard, but Bill & Co. has to actually give massive price cuts before we can compare and contrast the actions afterward. ;-) The ever escalating pricing of Windows, compared to the rock solid Mac OS prices, makes me think Microsoft's not too worried about what the customer thinks of pricing choices.
- Narcowski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Of course not - Some institutions require their employees to use Microsoft products, and gaming is almost exclusively a PC thing. It's a sad sate of affairs.
- PA42, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0If Microsoft gave me $100 to spend on MS products I would get less than half of a Vista license to run in parallels and be happy :)
- tjex, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Did MS ever treat their customers like this? NO, THAT is why most ppl like Apple.
You probably didn't even buy an iPhone. Those who did, appreciate the gesture. Which I might add, was a letter directed directly to those iPhone early adopters, not every person with an opinion out there. - Korexz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2This is all just a little bit stupid. Technology depreciates VERY rapidly. More than a car, more than house in New Orleans, more than your toe nail clippings. This is not an MS vs Apple thing. This is an Industry vs Apple thing.
- yelofnivek, on 10/10/2007, -10/+6jesus jobs FTW!

- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0LOL Goddamn, that's funny! I don't care if it's been said before, "seraph582" officially coined that term just now, as far as I'm concerned!
- joefreeza, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1What you guys don't understand is that how many apple products are worth buying under $100? Wow! An Ipod Shuffle?
This is a way to get iPhone buyers to spend even more money just because they have that $100 store credit.- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Listen. If I biught an iPhone and wanted nothing else, I could buy nothing else, with or without the credit. If I wanted a nano for when I go jogging (can't use a touch screen), I could pay $150 if I didn't get the credit, and only $50 if I did. So iPhone buyers are not being screwed.
- joel8x, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You could get accessories for your iPhone, buddy.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -9/+5So Steve Jobs gives $100 (worth of Apple gear) to all 1st gen iPhone owners. Bill Gates gives BILLIONS of dollars away every year to charity. Which one is more Christ-like now??
- xmkatx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's why I don't hate Bill Gates. Him and his wife are big philanthropists.
- woojoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well Steve Jobbs isn't the richest man in the world, either.
- K3ITHK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Neither is Bill Gates...

- kingfoot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4thats way i dont hate bill gates either, what i hate is his company and his way of practicing his business.
but i have a lot of respect for the man himself, for his philanthropy and his excellent long drawn out domination/death of his company. - Mike89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's for tax.. he'd be loosing the money either way, might as well get some PR out of it.
- dionhewson, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1this is like jesus handing out fish and bread...what a fukn legend...steve jobs for prime minister...yeahhhh
- haterrade, on 10/10/2007, -38/+11there is such an absolute ***** double standard applied to apple and microsoft on digg it's unbelievable, you guys would burn down Gates' house if he pulled something like this
- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -76/+369The "sorry, we knowingly gouged you guys with a planned price drop in the pipeline" apology was all I wanted. Thanks, Steve.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -11/+118Gouged? All you guys KNEW the price when you bought it. This only proves that they were making a stupid amount of margin on all you early adopters.
This is like giving in to the kids to shut them up, and try to prevent further tantrums. In my opinion, Apple should have just kept the money that people gave them. People GAVE THEM the money. Apple didn't steal it, or hold a gun to their head. Stop making it out to be some great con job.
Imagine if people pulled the same childish crap every time gas went up or down? Oh wait, they do...
We're *****.- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -15/+7Of course we knew the price when we bought it. It would have been very complicated to pay, otherwise.
- brutalentropy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I just randomly handed them bills and kept saying "Is this enough yet?"!!!
- oderdigg, on 10/10/2007, -13/+3It's not about knowing the price when they bought it. The issue is that it didn't have to be 200$ more than it ended up being. Why? Greed. I don't hate Apple at all. People are consumers and some will consume regardless of intelligence, financial status or social status. If a company were to sell a 1000$ mp3 player and people bought it, jokes on them, not the company that sold it to them. If people are stupid, take advantage of them, it's the American dream after all.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Hint: It's not greed, it's profit. It's why Apple's in business in the first place, not to make sure you look stylish with a new gizmo. And it's not like Apple's taking advantage of people! They're LINING UP TO GIVE APPLE THEIR MONEY.
Stop with the Victim mentality. You're just a moron. Fools and their money are quickly parted. It'll eventually be worth $0, but they price for TODAY, not tomorrow. You people fail at life.- oderdigg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1How judgmental of you.
Greed = Profit + $$$. If Apple wasn't greedy, they would have priced the unit at 5-10% over cost. Anything above that is greed esp. considering they dropped the price 33% in 2 months.
BTW: I didn't buy an Apple product since my 4 GB nano.
You fail at comprehending English. - bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So it only becomes greed when it's a margin greater than what you stipulate? How arbitrary. In the end, if Apple could charge $1,000,000 for the iphone, and fools would line up to buy it, all the power to them. It's all margin, and it all affects their bottom line.
Don't like it? Don't purchase it!
Instead people are buying it and then complaining that Apple's *gasp* trying to make money! What kind of business does that?!? - tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Look. If people are willing to buy it, they're not victims. They wanted it immediately, and they paid $200 over what the price would be in a few months. That's how consumer tech works. Early adopters pay more and get more bugs, but they get the product sooner. This is Digg; I thought everyone knew that.
- oderdigg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1How judgmental of you.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5Thanks, Captain Obvious. Would you like another swing at the t-ball?
So...if you knew what you were paying then, why is it suddenly such a "gouging" now? $600 is still $600, the only difference is the envy of those who got a lower price.- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4It became a gouging when I found out that they charged what they knew was an immense (at least $200) premium with a planned reduction in the pipeline. It's not a moral or ethical issue, since I agreed to pay it. It's just a sting in the lower rectal region. Kinda like how you feel if you give a bum $5 and he tells his friends to hit you up because you're a softie.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Apple charges this premium on everything. It's called margin. In business you try to get away with as big a margin as your customers are willing to pay.
You morons were willing to pay a $200 markup (at least), so that's how Apple priced it.
Apple did not sell the iPod on false pretenses like your analogy. It was a straight-up cash for product deal. No one was swindled.
The only thing that changes the original deal is the current price, which all the early adopters turned green as the emerald isle over. - kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Where did I say anyone was swindled? Where did my analogy contain anything like false pretenses? I just finished saying it wasn't a moral or ethical issue. It was a subjective "I really didn't like that, Steve" kinda issue.
You should be careful about calling people morons until you work on that reading comprehension. - bromac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I didn't call you a moron. I called people who paid $600 for a phone morons.
Speaking of reading comprehension... - kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I paid $600 for a phone twice. What were you saying about reading comprehension?
- yohnstoppable, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I think you're a moron for buying 2 iphones. The same type of price drops happen every time a new line of video cards is released, and I don't hear bitching from those who were ahead of the curve. Talk about a lot of pissing and moaning over nothing
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3You could afford $1200 on phones? There's a saying: More money than brains. There's about 20000 people in this thread it applies to. You're one of them. Next time you don't want to feel cheated (whatever that lower rectal feeling is) of $600, don't give someone that much money. It's that simple.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Apple charges this premium on everything. It's called margin. In business you try to get away with as big a margin as your customers are willing to pay.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4It became a gouging when I found out that they charged what they knew was an immense (at least $200) premium with a planned reduction in the pipeline. - Akronos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apple was making a profit margin of 50% on the iPhones. But what was even more eye opening was this quote (Dated around January 2007), "iSuppli Director and principal analyst Jagdish Rebello said that "With a 50 percent gross margin, Apple is setting itself up for aggressive price declines going forward." So I guess this was expected.
http://www.techspot.com/news/24122-isuppli-claims-iphone-profit-margin-is-50.html
- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -15/+7Of course we knew the price when we bought it. It would have been very complicated to pay, otherwise.
- Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19Everyone crying about being "gouged" needs to get up off their mommy's couch and grow a pair.
You walked in to the store. You plunked down the $599. You got the toy you were drooling over. No one forced you to do it, and you knew the cost was $599.
Prices for high tech items go down over time -- that's life. Don't like it, don't be the first idiot standing in line.
Quit your crying.- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1What does this say about the people whining about the whiners?
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They need to update their block lists.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1What does this say about the people whining about the whiners?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1This is more like "Thanks early adopters for waiting in line for days and paying $100-200 more than people who simply had to wait two months, so heres $100 thats only good towards an Apple product at an Apple store. Although of course 99% of the stuff in the Apple store is over $100 so you will have to pay the rest out of your own pocket. We are you you won't mind us screwing you over even more now that we have already screwed you over."

- rlbond86, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2"Gouged"? Do you know how VLSI and semiconductor fabrication work? If you did you would know that initially most of their components fail testing, so the few units that can be built are very expensive. They get more efficient at making them, and prices go down.

- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3He doesn't OWE you anything. Are you seriously crying because Apple dropped the price on the iPhone and you wanted to buy it before and though it was worth $600, so you spent $600 on it?
- Jones82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I guess after this we won't be hearing anything related to Apple for a long, long time
- zybch, on 10/10/2007, -8/+4"Hopefully now everyone will shut the ***** up."
Get real. Maddox got it complete right, the ONLY thing apple fans can't do that everyone else CAN is to SHUT THE ***** UP! - goodoldharris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Seriously. Did Apple hold a gun to your head to get your $599? No, they just offered you something that YOU CHOSE TO PAY FOR. If you thought it was overpriced, you shouldn't have bought it. Now, after 2 months of waving it around, you start crying over a price cut. LOL what a bunch self-indulgent ***** whiners. If you're crying about this, you should really consider avoiding being an early adopter of anything in the future.
- Masna, on 10/10/2007, -32/+574Wow. This is magnificent. As usual, Apple proves itself worthy of its fanboys and its extremely high customer service rating.
- Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -21/+10Considering the number of Apple stories in the top 10 the past few days, I've been digging them all down simply because I'm tired of seeing them. However, this was worthy of a digg up. Most companies wouldn't do this.

- Gabberwok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Have you never heard of the Zune? When Microsoft abandons it, what do you think they'll give the 10 people who already have one?
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Microsoft did something like this.
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Yeah, it's called charging hundreds of dollars for what's essentially a buggy XP with pretty icons.
- zybch, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1"Most companies wouldn't do this."
What? Give you a $100 voucher to spend on accessory crap thats marked up at around 70%?
See how quickly that $100 turns into $30. Most companies DO do this kind of thing via rebates and cash-back offers, only they give you actual cash, not something you can ONLY use in a small number of very heavily over-priced stores.
I just bought a nice epson printer and set of carts and got a $40 cash back cheque in the mail. Thats a HELL of a lot more useful than a frigging voucher to buy over-priced crap in 1 store only.
- da5id, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3most companies wouldn't hose you like that in the first place
- suprchunk, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Wow, are you jumping on the Apple bandwagon now that MS banned you from XBL for doing illegal *****? I can sense the decline of Apple now that people like you are jumping the MS ship.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1"now that MS banned you from XBL for doing illegal *****?"

- fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And proves many of the fanboys are not worthy of Apple's customer service.
I was surprised at just how many rushed to throw Apple under the bus within minutes yesterday. - ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am totally afraid from one power now. The power of whining!
- Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -21/+10Considering the number of Apple stories in the top 10 the past few days, I've been digging them all down simply because I'm tired of seeing them. However, this was worthy of a digg up. Most companies wouldn't do this.
- geuisteses, on 10/10/2007, -95/+22I just bought the $299 while-supplies-last 4gb model last night. Wonder if I qualify for that $100 store credit too.... $199 iPhone FTW
- TTURabble, on 10/10/2007, -15/+0Me too, crosses fingers for an even more awesome deal...
- jayhawk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9um, no . . . you bought a phone that was reduced in price $200. why would you think you deserve another $100 from Apple?
- TTURabble, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Screw apple, if it means more money in my pocket then I'm going to do it. I'm not going to clamor for a rebate or ask for one either, but if they send me one in the mail or tell me I am eligible then why shouldn't I?
- r2pro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Because you're NOT eligible. Read the letter he wrote. Then try to comprehend what not receiving a rebate or other consideration means. You already got a $200 consideration. Thanks for playing.
- blazes816, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Please, hold your breath whilst waiting for your letter
- TTURabble, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Screw apple, if it means more money in my pocket then I'm going to do it. I'm not going to clamor for a rebate or ask for one either, but if they send me one in the mail or tell me I am eligible then why shouldn't I?
- wafu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12news flash: you're a douchebag
- JimmyDushku, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2That's not news.
- BamaMac, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Sorry, you won't qualify. Only early adopters, not those who get the $200 price drop.
- LordSubtle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Cancer that is killing Digg

- AvidPreatorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2you sir are an idiot
- hilo4321, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2holy ***** people get real it was a joke...
- samgab, on 10/10/2007, -9/+181This is brilliant. It will placate the angry early iPhone adopters who are feeling cheated, and it will create more Apple sales, because they'll probably all buy the new Nano. Or, many of them may have been considering updating their Macs, and they might see this as the perfect opportunity to do that --- with $100 off! Maybe they'll wait till October and get a new Mac with the new OSX... Being early adopters...
- lucidapathy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, that I think was exactly the point.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm going to save mine for Leopard, and I think that a lot of others will do the same thing.
- PathDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I just called a friend of mine who's getting a rebate, and he's planning an Apple mini-shopping-spree.
- yohnstoppable, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2And months after they buy that new Mac, they will bitch all over again when the price goes down. It's the endless circle of life. Did I say life? I meant retardation
- darkfus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3...or they'll get guys like me who have only bought an iPod or iPhone somewhere else to actually walk in to an Apple store for the first time ever. Between the gesture and the free money, I may actually go get a Mac mini or iMac. For the first time since the 80's, I may actually reconsider my long standing bias to the PC.
- samgab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wait till October and do that. Make it the awesome new iMac. You won't regret it.
- voetsjoeba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And the best part is: it's not only a pc, it also serves as a mirror !
- samgab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wait till October and do that. Make it the awesome new iMac. You won't regret it.

- battletrax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Im going to wait it out on an alienware.
Then ill be like Hah!
but price drops take like 4 years for those things. And No $50 price drops dont count sorry. Not on a $3999 machine.
- mediaspree, on 10/10/2007, -91/+16Shouldn't it be a $200 store credit?
- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -8/+25Quitcherwhinin'
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28He's leaving 100 up to depreciation. this is still a generous offer.
- SnuKs, on 10/10/2007, -8/+19Shouldn't you STFU and quit your whining you greedy bastard?
- giroguy, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4i say you get nothing for being a greedy 5 year old
- turbojugend23, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5You sir, are a total douchebag. You should be kissing his ass right now since he caved in to all the crybabies demands.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Why? Early adopters always pay a price premium, this is nothing unique to Apple.
- ch4os1337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that the risk you take when buying the newest tech from a company that doesn't specialize in a market there going in
- mrchin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3No, you greedy bastud! I was happy paying 599 and at the time it was worth it to me, and apparently to everyone else who bought one. No we get a thank you for it. So appreciated and unnecessary. Great things from a great company.
- SurlyB, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh, don't be so literal. This offer is something I've never seen in the cutthroat electronics industry and is simply an unprecedented display of generosity. If it had been something like $20 credit, then yeah, that would have been lame, but what other companies would even consider something like that?
- dionhewson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1this how you breed loyalty...what a fukn smart leader...
- platypibri, on 10/10/2007, -21/+444Wow. NOBODY does stuff like this in the tech business. This why I am perfectly happy drinking the Apple Kool-ade. I just bought my 4th iPod, a shuffle, last Saturday. All 4 were worth every cent. And, like most Apple devices, they hold their value better than anything else in the industry.
- LemmingJesus, on 10/10/2007, -10/+34What could you possibly need 4 iPods for?
- supermansuper, on 10/10/2007, -5/+46Dint you read the post properly? He drinks the Apple Kool-ade, why are you trying to reason with him?
- Joshuarr, on 10/10/2007, -12/+7He forgot to mention that the first three died. I'm on my fourth one too. My 60 iPod with video is worth about 4 dollars.
- hammersuit, on 10/10/2007, -11/+5Then the question is... why buy an iPod? It's crazy, "I'm on my fourth iPod, wtf so angry." Don't be angry, jesus you had four times to get out! Try a Zune.
- glasgowm, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12heh, a zune.
- shank2001, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2He fooled you, this guy doesn't own an ipod. He probably owns a zune, poor guy
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1He forgot to mention that his cousin meanwhile went through 18 Zunes. He finally just settling on plugging his headphones into a dog turd and saved some money.
- DiggzDE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If that was the case, then the last part of his post would be rather ironic. "And, like most Apple devices, they hold their value better than anything else in the industry."
- Bootes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Maybe you should treat your products a little better. My first gen iPod needs a new battery, but works fine other than that. My 60GB Video iPod works perfectly.
- m3mn0n, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My first gen nano took a wash cycle and still works perfectly fine.
- KennMac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My 3rd gen iPod has survived 4 cold winters and 4 hot summers in my car, all the time. I expected any hard drive to call it quits after 1 year of that. It's still going.
- Jeffler, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I'll give you $4 for your broken iPod video...seriously!
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'll give you $5.00 for that iPod :-D
Throw it on eBay and post the link back here.

- fr34k5h0w, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Anyone notice he mentioned "high resale"?
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -15/+8NOBODY drops prices on a product by 33% in two months after launch. okay maybe not nobody but it's highly unlikely, especially when a new model hasn't superceeded the original. And no, the ipod touch is not replacing the iphone.
- drlha, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5In the world of mobile phones its pretty common to drop prices rapidly after launch. The RAZR was $600 at launch remember?
- tjex, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2He doesn't, but he still loves to complain
- InsaneGeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sure the Razor dropped prices shortly after launch, but they didn't drop it within this short of a time at this high of a percentage. The razor price dropped after interest started to wane in it (majority of cell phone purchasers tend to be "ooh shiney" people, so they move on quickly), and the company wants to continue to eek our profit of the lagging product... has the interest in the iphone dropped that much that Apple needs to do that already?
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You are mistaken. The Razor dropped in price exponentially.

- evilbert420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Didn't Microsoft give free games/accessories to early XBOX adopters in EU after they dropped the price there?
- evilbert420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1XBOX is part of Microsoft, but really, they are their own entity. I read an article in a game mag that discussed how MS gave Team XBOX their own powers of decision and design, which may explain why it's one of the few MS products that I actually like. Ironically, the article reveals that Team XBOX took early protypes of the console to Japan, and asked citizens which design was best, not knowing it was an MS product. The Japanese voted for the one they ended up choosing, siting that "it looks like Apple made it."
- evilbert420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox
- DiggzDE, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Watch out. I heard that Kool-ade is poisonous.
- jamespa66, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This is more like Apple Cider and it tastes pretty damn good!
- gweedo767, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16Nobody? Google DOUBLE re-emburced customers that bought from their Video store they are closing. I would say that even tops this.
- PA42, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9The video store is going to stop working. Early adopter Iphone buyers still have a working phone. Completely different scenario. But cheers to both of them (Apple and Google)
- TheTSArt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Isn't the difference though that you get to KEEP your iPhone?
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Note that not just the video store will stop working, but all videos you bought and downloaded will stop working. I agree, totally different.

btw i have had a creative zen micro 5gb since launch. It did everything ipod did and more, including but not limited to, no need for external buggy application(thats right XP found it right away!), no virii were written for it. so i say ipods may hold their value sure, but not any better than any other item out there.- zardozzzzzz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Virii is not a real word nor the proper Latin.
Say it with me now children, "viruses."
Also, i wouldn't trade my ipod nano 2nd gen. for anything, even your mom's sweet ass.- UTPinky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I had his mom. She wasn't that sweet.

- PA42, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I owned a creative zen before my ipod and found it lacking. The scroll wheel is superior to the Zen's system. Additionally, the screen isn't as bright or as clear and the itunes music store is superior to any other music stores I've seen.
I view it as immoral and stealing to illegally download music, so I need a good music store.
Am I a fanboy? probably, but only because apple gives me a solid product again and again while other technology companies let me down. - Jeffler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dead honest, I hate buying MP3 players that don't sync with iTunes.

- xmkatx, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Apple ipods hold their value for a year, then the battery dies. I am considering getting raped by Apple again to have another ipod product after my nano died unexpectedly after 1.5 years.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1iPod battery replacement is easy as pie and costs at most $40 depending on the battery and model iPod.
I like upgrading my iPod every 1.5 years because that way I get new features but trying to blame a battery is stupid.

Bollocks!!! Look at the rebates and cash back offers from pretty much every other consumer tech company. Hell, just get any old magazine and a pair of scissors and you'll be able to find several much larger discount coupons for Dell alone!- scrogger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1maybe that's where you got your discounted brain cells ... giving back credit's or $ after the fact when you don't have to is totally different from having to give a rebate to get someone to buy in the first place.
