Apple COO Tim Cook: iPhone is revolutionary; you get what you pay for
macdailynews.com — Well, I think the iPhone is a revolutionary product. And Steve mentioned this at Macworld. And I think this is a very, very good point. Revolutionary products only come along so often. You know, Apple had the Macintosh in 1984 that reinvented the personal computer industry. The iPod in 2001 which reinvented the whole music industry.

- lorductape, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4if I payed NOT to have to use Cingular, would I get THAT?
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3True. Cingular is worthless, but people still pay plenty of money to be on their network.
- canti32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Unfortunately, this is the one time where I think apple is wrong with their predictions. People will avoid it for two reasons.
1. The high price point.
2. The fact that it is a cingular exclusive.
That being said, it only takes one popular celebrity to endorse or even just use a product to potentially turn it into a best seller. - ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6where do all you cingular bashers live? i travel all over the country and have had just about a cell phone with every provider and as for the all around coverage, cities AND non-metropolitan areas, cingular has the best coverage by far. that is why apple went with them. think about it from a business point of view, would you want a network that only server metro areas and SOME non-metro areas or a network that had coverage everywhere and a larger distribution.
- drgnpaladin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've gotta go with ucbrave92 here. Why do people hate cingular so much? I've never had any problems with the service and they always have the best phone selection
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should never have locked it into a single provider. Period.
- Evoguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Oh come on... I think we can all agree the iPhone is certainly not a revolutionary device. In some cases, it's not even evolutionary (EDGE, wtf!). Sure it's well designed and shiny, but at the end of the day, it's not going to be a good internet device (no EV-DO), not a good e-mail device (no Exchange push), and not a good productivity device (no 3rd party apps). I think calling it "revolutionary" is a little bit of a stretch.
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What good is UTMS if you have to be in (Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, San Jose, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Puerto Rico, Austin, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, Baltimore and Washington D.C.) for it to work?
I wish cell companies would upgrade their network instead of throwing free phones around for customers.
Exchange push (how is that revolutionary?)? Why not just connect to web mail? - dmurray14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am in ***** maryland and we have UMTS. Nice try.

I don't even think a celebrity will turn this around.
There are tons of reasons why this isn't revolutionary and why it won't sell well
1. High price point - They've effectively priced themselves straight out of the consumer electronics markets. No one who owns an ipod or cellphone will pay to integrate them. It's way to expensive, especially considering it's a substandard iPod. Pay $350 for an 80GB, or $500 for an 8GB. It's not easy to buy this phone, you have to have a job with strong disposable income or parents who are very rich.
2. Egotism - They believe the Apple name and the iPod name will sell this product even if it costs an arm and a leg. Well guess what Apple, theres another company out there who did the same thing as you, and more people have the old version of their new hardware than yours. (Read: Sony Playstation 3, also: failure of the Playstation 3)
3. Lack of Corporate Integration - The only users who pay above $100-$200 for their phone in America are corporate users. The blackberrys and palms, etc etc. But without Exchange or some form of corporate integration, these users will laugh at the iPhone for being a pretty (useless) device to them.
4. Lack of Third Party Support - WTG! There went all of the power users who love writing software for all the new phones. Who love figuring them out, writing games in J2ME, etc etc. You also loose the vast library of programs and games available to cell phones by third parties. Oh but wait you offer Solitaire and Brick Breaker for $5 a pop on ITMS, right?
5. Cingular - Locking this phone to one network kills a huge amount of potential buyers, especially those locked into contracts on other networks.
6. EDGE - As was said already, this is DEEVOLUTIONARY, we're de-evolving to yesterdays technology! What about 3G? At least that would make the iPhone "status-quo".
I could keep going but I think my point is made. This isn't revolutionary. Sony being retarded about the PS3 is revolutionary. Apple copying Sony's mistakes is just retarded.

- kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hey kids! If your parents buy you an iPhone, you will be the most popular kid in your class for at least a week!
- take2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I'm still trying to figure out who this phone is for:
* It doesn't integrate w/exchange or rim's push email. For business users... - Nope.
* $500 phone for a struggling college student... - Nope.
* Potential upgrade for a user's non-flash drive ipod. Not enough memory - Nope.
* Replacement for existing Treo/PocketPC Phone users. No 3rd party apps - Nope.
* Mac/Nano users that want to continue to look really cool. - Yes! - srodolff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Viva La Revolution!!!
I'm gonna burn and pillage an Apple store right now. - Snoozer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0OMG the Iphone is a revolution. Just like the prada phone!!!
- shadydentist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think I would be more excited about this if it were just an Ipod, instead of a phone.
Oh well. Maybe the next ipod will have the fancy touch-screen interface. Till then, we play the waiting game. - seer54, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I guess if the title contains Apple and Revolutionary, it automatically becomes popular.
- DrDoak, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4NOTHING in the iPhone is new, nor is there anything that showcases scientific brilliance. Not only is it incorrect to call it revolutionary, it borders on downright FALSE ADVERTISING.
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Revolutionary? Maybe in the US. This phone has nothing that is new to the Japanese or South Koreans.
- almalax19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Virtual Voice Mail? Full Screen Video? Multi Touch?
- humanrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1when will it be able to make the outgoing calls?
I'm using my own invention until I'm able to make the outgoing calls! - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What does the iPhone revolutionize exactly? Usually something revolutionary does something that hasn't been done before. And that's just not the case here. It's neat and pretty and everything, but hardly revolutionary.
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's going to revolutionize the 'people getting robbed in the street' industry.
- mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I admit, it was a nice presentation when Steve unveiled the iPhone... but there isn't a single new feature on the iPhone.
Putting calls on hold... most phones have done this since my first phone back in 1998.
Google Maps... I downloaded that app free from google awhile ago. The difference, apple preinstalled an existing google app.
the only new features are iPod related, not phone related. - badnewsblair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Revolutionary - "When used as an adjective, Revolutionary refers to something that has a major, sudden impact on society or on some aspect of human endeavor."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutionary - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm getting one - that's for goddamn sure. I'll let everyone else...be annoyed by it or whatever.
- necrisque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The price point is amazingly high. We might all deep down have some sort of fascination with super expensive ("not so easy to get") technical items, but that's a bit steep. I fear it'll become like B&O's "Serene Mobile", only more functional and cheaper. You'd think people who buy that one are crazy. I don't know that telephone provider (Cingular), so that's why I think maybe Europe will bite if the right providers are chosen for the countries.
- Snoozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Man when this prada phone comes out it's gonna be sweet! opps.............I mean iPhone.
