Apple Introduces iPop: A Snap! Crackle! Pop! Inspired feature to OS X
discussions.apple.com — For many, the recently released Mac OS X 10.4.10 update has introduced a 'popping' sound coming from the audio line out. No official explanation or fix has been released for this bug, though some have suggested that the sound is associated with the audio system turning on/off in a malfunctioning power save mode.

combo installers always seem to be missing any problems that most people have had with the updates in the last year in my experience. - schoate09, on 10/11/2007, -15/+3Not a problem here on Vista. Time to listen to my 7.1 surround sound.
- zeeky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1me too, but it's been happening since 10.4.9. it's very quiet so i can only hear it if im using headphones. it happens between every song on the iLike challenge facebook app.

- ronster, on 10/11/2007, -13/+7Apparently Steve also dropped the "it just works" philosophy, here's what I get on my G4:
A script on the page "Apple - Support - Discussions - 10.4.10 Snap Crackle Pop ..." (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4776149) is making Safari unresponsive. Do you want to continue running the script, or stop it?
Never seen this before. Steve should fix that...- tzonic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hey ronster, that was actually my fault, I pasted that link incorrectly--notice the two question marks on the end. Did you see that link on the forum thread with the same topic as this Digg submission? They deleted it, but yeah, my fault. Sorry.
- tzonic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7The original link I submitted actually is to a specific post on the forum - oops! It still takes you to the forum, but this is what the link should have been: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4776149

- defectDS, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Oh this is happening to me too, yay I'm not alone! I thought it was my speakers. *sigh of relief*
- Hydroxyl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah, I got scared because there was a power surge, and I had thought I had blown the speakers or something.
- ThinkBox, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Yeah, this has happened to my dual 2.7 G5 ever since i started using my SoundstickIIs so its been awhile, i doubt its 10.4.10
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -9/+9I'm gone back to 10.4.9, and I don't plan on updating OS X until 10.4.11 or 10.5, whichever comes first. 10.4.10 was the biggest headache I has since switching to the Mac over 2 and a half hears ago.
- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -15/+1Thats dumb to not go to 10.5.. its friggin awesome!
Additionally, I haven't seen a single problem on my mac for 10.4.10. Do you have a lot of 3rd party apps? - norbiu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Tell me about it. My MacBook's screen started flickering the day after the update.
- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -15/+1Thats dumb to not go to 10.5.. its friggin awesome!
- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4I don't know what the 'popping' feature is: but my mac has ALWAYS had a problem that when I'm playing iTunes music and another app (like iChat, Mail, etc) makes a ding or sound... SOMETIMES.. the speakers blare for a quick second (or pop?) and then I have to toggle the mute/volume buttons to have music return.
Any help? - ventro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+69I have the popping as well. It sucks balls. Kind of like this comments system.
- clark24, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4Exactly like this comments system!
- sych0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Haha, it's funny because this comment system sucks

- ideaofprogress, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16I thought my computer was dying. I'm glad it's just the OS.
- drmobutu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Two days ago, I installed 10.4.10 on my Powerbook G4, and now it won't wake from sleep properly.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2It's Apple's way of saying "go get a new Macbook or Macbook Pro!"
- norbiu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yeah. It wakes up, asks for my password, type it in and goes back to sleep again. WTF Apple ?!
- Icebird, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Not on mine. Sleeps and wakes up perfectly fine. Macbook here though.
- digitalarcanum, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3yeah yet Microsoft is a group of fascist assholes. GG.
- wallryan, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3i think i will stay at 10.4.8 since i also heard that 10.4.9 was trouble for macbooks
- wackymacs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I have a feeling Apple stopped properly testing Tiger updates on older Mac hardware - I have read about problems with the latest updates on the PowerMacs and PowerBooks before...
- kolywater, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2maybe, but i'm getting this issue on my 9 month old macbook.. so it may be more than a lack of testing on older hardware.
- friend18, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I noticed the popping since the update. Though I wouldn't describe it as a pop. It sound more like a thump to me. I went to the apple discussion forums looking for a fix but there is none yet. :-(
- blackjack75, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's a pop or a thump depending on the speakers. On my laptop I can barely hear it. On the mac mini in my living room connected to a set of speakers with stronger bass levels it feels like someone is constantly dis/connecting my jack cable.
- stewacide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I purchased a current-rev Macbook that had this problem (before 10.4.10), returned it thinking it was defective, and the replacement had it as well. Poking around the internet, it seems it's a universal or near universal problem w/ Intel Macbooks and MBPs. It's clearly something to do with the sleep state. Apple customer care said they'd never heard of it, and even accepted my original exchange on those grounds. At this point I'm putting up with it and hoping for a software fix...
- Niten, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's happening on my Core 2 iMac too, for what it's worth (but not my old iBook G4).
- oddfreakperson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14I happens every 10 seconds if you are using ichat. MAKE IT STOP. I CANT STAND IT ANYMORE. But at least I'm not the only one with this problem. [Eagerly awaits 10.4.10.1.0.0.0.0.1.0]
- jsg7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I never run any OS updates until they have been out for a few days. Better to wait and see if lots of people have seen bugs before I unleash it on my system.
- lvl3bomb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Amazing. Well said.
Every update Apple releases, I read here in these comments that people shouldn't update straight away with the first update release....
This time, I acted on this advice... cool : ) thanks..
- lvl3bomb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Amazing. Well said.
- LittLeBunny2o5, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4I thought it said iPod, so I thought some new iPod was coming out and I got all confused. I felt sad.
- Limezor, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4But if this was a problem with Windows, people would be saying how but it was.
- apologeticus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6"How but it was?" Is this some kind of windoze-speak I'm not familiar with?
- sully213, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I guess he's got but(t) on the mind ;)
- harshbarj, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12While I'm sure your going to got dugg down for that comment, your right. Sadly a double standard exists. Problems on a mac are just brushed off while on windows the same type of bug is a reason to switch to a mac (which as we see has it's share of problems).
Guess the "it just works" idea is out the window in this case. - mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Just to point out the obvious but this double standard is especially prevalent on Digg.com. Other places are nowhere near as bad. Seems a large amount of the 5% Apple users are also Digg users.
For what it's worth, I've never had a Windows (XP or Vista) update released by Microsoft cause any problems ever. Never heard of others either...3rd party is different, we're talking about Apple releasing an update that ***** up your system. I'd be pissed but as expected the Apple faithful just let it go... - ZigVicious, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4yeah, it'd be such a big but.
- apologeticus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6"How but it was?" Is this some kind of windoze-speak I'm not familiar with?
- JonLatane, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20My Macbook has been updated with 10.4.10 since it was released and I've had absolutely zero problems.
- shaunhey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Same here... no problems with the 10.4.10 update on a 1.83 CD Macbook
- philo23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21.83 Core Duo Referb. Macbook, 10.4.10. Zero problems.
- jamesong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the only complaint I have, is that UNO doesn't work. :(
- applebyte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Do you have external speakers connected via the headphone jack? It's only noticeable then, as this bug is related to the line-out, not the built-in speakers.
- dreadstar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I do use external speakers...and the only pop I hear is the sound card turning on or off when it's not in use...and it's always done that.
- drrawle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Mine to! Sort it out please Apple!!
- mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4They're too busy working on the iPhone...
- DrPhibes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I got the POP's too. Only when I have external speakers connected to my MacBook. I hope Apple fixes it soon, It's pretty annoying.
- digiguy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5No popping here
- itsme92, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4lucky bastard
- mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11This is just pathetic...I guess all of Apple's good engineers are working on the iPhone leaving the retards in charge of OS X release management.
- bardamuclichy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4iPhone is coming out for AT&T/Cingular customers only, correct? Interesting in that EVERYONE I know is either on Verizon or Sprint. We've been waiting for 10.5 at work before we upgrade to MacBook Pros... but now I'm hearing they're setting up the next revision AFTER the 10.5 release... Jan.
Why am I saying this? Well, we're looking at purchasing 5 Macbook Pros and ZERO iPhones. - dreampilot, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Christ. A popping sound and you become unglued calling people "retards". Get a life.

- kashem, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I must be lucky -- no pops on Mac Pro.
- itsme92, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5That's because it only affects Intel Macs with laptop parts. (in other words everything but the Mac Pro). The popping sound is the audio chip turning itself on and off to save power. Before 10.4.10, it only would pop when you were on battery power, now it does it when you're plugged in. It drives me nuts on my Macbook.
- lightningrod220, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7/me hugs problem-free PowerMac G5 and smiles...
- eliah, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11MBP, generation behind the current one, pops here. Someone from the Apple forums wrote a little app that works around the problem by continually playing a silent MP3: http://www.tpiper.com/popstop/popstop.zip
- mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7And silently kills your battery life
- tpiper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, it will do. As I said, it incurs an extra ~2% CPU usage. At this point, you have a choice - turn off the speakers, leave an MP3 playing, or use PopStop.... the choice is yours.
- Wahoo06, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I'm not sure if it was the 10.4.10 update. I just installed the Safari 3.0.2b upgrade and my computer (iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) no longer pops. How many of these cases are occurring on computers with the Safari 3.0.1b?
- corsairstw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's highly unlikely that the Safari 3.0.2b fixed the problem. I installed the update and am still getting the popping/thumping noise when there is no audio activity for 10 seconds.
- Wahoo06, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You're right. For some reason, it stopped on my computer for a while, but it has returned. Very frustrating.
- dafatkid27, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Oh man, I was totally freaking out, and couldn't find anybody with the same problem. I was JUST trying to think of what to do to fix it. Thank god for this!
- jaynestown, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I'm having no problems with the .10 update. iMac Intel Core 2 Duo.
- Niten, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1My iMac Core 2 Duo does make the popping sound, on the other hand. I use external speakers; do you as well?
- applebyte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Do you have external speakers connected via the headphone jack? It's only noticeable then, as this bug is related to the line-out, not the built-in speakers.
- AlphaFreak, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2No problems here... MBP "Santa Rosa", no external speakers.
- applebyte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This problem is caused by a change in how the line-out is handled in 10.4.10. if you're not using external speakers, you won't be affected.
- fadeout, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I'm getting it, too. Has been happening in Civ IV Warlords on my Macbook. Also getting a crackle noise when trying to use the fruity loops demo under Parallels but I'm wondering if that's a driver issue.
- insomniacal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6iPop? You mean, something like the speaker click my work-issued Windows 2000 Dell Latitude D500 had made every 6 seconds throughout its entire life?
Maybe OS X really _is_ beginning to copy Windows. - washingtonydc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It's been happening on my Mac Mini since I got it earlier this year. It's a long lasting problem with me, so I generally just turn the speakers off when I'm not playing audio.
- daremk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1i was just about the update, but after hearing about this and other boot up issues, i think i'll hold off as well
- 1shawn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3For those of you experiencing this problem, just as I am, there is a simple workaround! Read about it here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1008163&tstart=0
Basically you just run a small app called Pop Stop that loops a silent MP3 in the background. This prevents the sound subsystem to power off and on, which seems to be the cause of the pops. Direct link to Pop Stop: http://www.tpiper.com/popstop/popstop.zip - zwilliams, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2No problems here with 10.4.10... well except the version numbering scheming.
- applebyte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Do you have external speakers connected via the headphone jack? It's only noticeable then, as this bug is related to the line-out, not the built-in speakers.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, in defense of zwilliams, there are problems with the version number. Some app's installers confuse 10.4.10 with 10.4.1 and refuse to run (like UNO 1.5.1).
Sure, it's not Apple's fault, but it's a problem nonetheless.

- FarcicalFart, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I have the new SR MBP and I upgraded to 10.4.10. I only hear the "pop" while playing Warcraft III in OS X.
- themulf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wow, I am glad I didnt' rush to update my macbook to 10.4.10.
- whistlerpro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1It wont neccisarily effect you.
- heynoop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0if i'm running windows through boot camp, and playing a game, i constantly get crackles and pops. i don't get it on osx, but then again, i haven't updated yet. so i probably wont :)
- stewacide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I got this as well. Under Vista my Macbook was ever worse.
- JamaicaJames, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So glad to see this on Digg....I thought mine was the only one! Thanks for this, maybe now Apple will fix it quicker.
POP!
Dammit. - SwabTheDeck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I haven't gotten the pop, but I did notice that the audio port now seems to power down when it's idle. For most people this is probably good, but I have two computers plugged into one set of speakers and when the audio port on my Mac turns off, the audio from the other computer suddenly becomes VERY LOUD. I though my wires were loose initially, but it seems that this is the problem. I hope when they fix this that they just leave it how it was before with the audio port always powered.
- aserer511, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1its mores, listen to it and it works out to,"see, PCs aren't less reliable."
- maninblac1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Okay, so i alrady know this one is going to bite me.
But for much people hate MS and windows, i've never in all my life seen an MS update do anything like this.
Say what you will but MS doesn't release broken patches that often.
Ok, WinME was a broken patch but this behind us right?- blackjack75, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I guess you're right :-)

Glad to know my audio out isn't faulty, i thought maybe the cable got defective. Highly annoying though, still. - tzonic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Update: the forum that this submission links to has thousands of views and counting, a more direct approach to getting Apple to take notice and fix this may be by submitting feedback, via http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
- nsolo1717, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i think this happened to me on my g4 powerbook the other night , it was dead silent and i actually thought it was mice in the wall......so i kicked the wall and it still kept happening .....i ended up just thinking i was going crazy and was in denial over the mice. Now that i know it was this ipop *****, i feel much better. sort of....
- Anthet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1No problem at all, using a mbp intel.
- applebyte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Do you have external speakers connected via the headphone jack? It's only noticeable then, as this bug is related to the line-out, not the built-in speakers.

- mbadolato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1My iMac and Mac Mini are fine. My Macbook Pro has the popping sound.
- applebyte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hearing it on my external speakers with MBP 2.33 C2D since the 10.4.10 update. Also noticed the volume is crazy loud now. Looks like Apple changed something to the line-out output, but forgot to do some quality assurance testing. Shame.
