Apple Sells One Million 3G iPhones First Weekend
techcrunch.com — Despite a few hiccups and stores running out of inventory, Apple was able to sell one million 3G iPhones worldwide across 21 countries its first three days on sale. During that same time, owners of both the new and old iPhone were able to download 10 million apps from the newly launched App Store on iTunes, despite a few hiccups with the iPhone 2.0

- Telmarine, on 07/15/2008, -13/+5Why would people waste their entire day in line? They should just wait a few days, after all, no piece of electronics is worth wasting your entire day on.
But I could be wrong, I never used the iPhone- wacomwacoff, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Because it's a group community experience hanging out with your friends all day, and you're part of something historic. The people in line are featured on the news, interviewed for the paper, and have a good time.

- narcofiche, on 07/15/2008, -9/+7The iPhone is a cool little toy and there's no wonder why it's such a huge hit, but I generally leave the house to get away from the computer. As a Mac user for the past 20 years I've always wanted Apple to become as big as it is now, but comparing my experience with the products now from the ones back then, I'm kind of regretting what I wished for.
- rodrigo74, on 07/15/2008, -3/+3"As a _________ for the past _____ years I've always wanted _______ to become as big as it is now, but comparing my experience with _______ now from the ones back then, I'm kind of regretting what I wished for."
It's just you that is getting older and consequently more nostalgic.- narcofiche, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I'm talking about the problems I've had in the past (pre-intel switch) and the problems I've had since. I'm talking about my experience. Not only have I had to take my computer in for the first time ever, but all of the people I've told to switch to the Mac are upset with me. So yeah, if nostalgia for me is a period where my Mac performed like my trusty G5 running Panther, then maybe that's what it is. It sure beats the days when I didn't go through 2 Apple keyboards, 4 mighty mouses, 2 notebooks and 3 iPods in the span of a year.
It's like the Obama/McCain thing. I'll still vote Obama, but with all the news that has been coming out the past couple weeks, I won't be entirely as happy about it as I used to be. - rodrigo74, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2That's why even though I love my mac, I don't recommend it to people, not even when they ask me directly: I always tell them to try if they want to, let them play with my macbook so they get a feel of it, ask me technical questions if they want to, but make up their own minds. It is a very personal choice (at least for people that spend more than 20 hours a week using it), like cars and shoes. And people love to blame others than themselves when things go wrong..
Regarding the problems with mice and keyboards, just get another brand, the ones produced by apple suck anyway..it's a hopeless case of form over function and ergonomics.
I do think that Panther was more reliable than Tiger and especially Leopard, though. I hope things improve with Snow Leopard.

- jerrycurley, on 07/15/2008, -5/+0Gee, I hope we get 5-6 more front page submissions about how Apple failed to live up to all the predictions made last week of close to 2 million.
- tigre, on 07/15/2008, -5/+1So, if a cellular company charges about $2000 for services per iPhone over the course of two years. Phone companies worldwide will gross about $1,000,000,000 (One Billion) for cellular charges for only the iPhones sold THIS last weekend. I imagine that number could easily triple given the expected amount of 3G sales. I don't know but it sure seems like a lot of money, but people are very willing to part with said money for a shiny object. I myself will be attempting to allocate enough "Bling" to purchase a iPhone before the year is out.
- Crystalemera, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1If you think scraping together $200 for a newly released phone is outrageous, then you haven't been a wireless customer for very long. As I recall the Razr was $600 with a $100 rebate when it was considered the "it" phone.

Yes, yes it does. Which is why the new phone has GPS.
Also if your internet connections are already really slow, than EDGE (which should be found in more places than 3G) will actually seem pretty decent. People might well start using the iPhone as a primary browsing device.
It is weird not having the iTunes store in India, but selling iPhone there... they must now have some kind of store if only to buy apps! - chirax, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Reason #9 is odd "GPS Does matter"
Yes, yes it does. Which is why the new phone has GPS.
But India's infrastructure sucks. and I mean Big time SUCKS. The govt dosen't want to move on as a lot of there investments have gone into to this.
"It is weird not having the iTunes store in India, but selling iPhone there... they must now have some kind of store if only to buy apps!"
My Guess is they want to fist built a tire swing and then a whole park around it sad but true. In my opinion Europe, India etc are not primary markets for Apple anyways.

- Kanaka, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Somewhat deceptive. This figure just means Apple shipped out 1 million phones from its factories to vendors and their Apple stores. It doesnt mean 1 million phones have been activated
- CountBrass, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Firstly: how do you know it's numbers shipped? And secondly, given that every has run out it's fair to say that number shipped ~= number sold.
- Kanaka, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Based on historical facts on how Apple calculates the figures. Also numbers shipped=numbers sold isn't necessarily true. Most of the phones that were sold out were the 16GB versions there were lots of 8GB available which alters overall numbers
Also Apple diverted most units to Apple stores and very few units to carriers. Hence it technically sold out in carrier stores but there were more units sitting on shelves at the Apple stores
