Apple Spurns Intel, For Now
forbes.com — Intel's technologists revealed Monday that the chip giant will not win a spot on Apple's iconic iPhone anytime soon, even as he outlined Intel's plans to keep growing as it turns 40 on July 18. Apple appears to be going it alone for now, buying chip designer P.A. Semi for $278 million in cash earlier this year to power its next generation of phones

- 1legend, on 07/02/2008, -9/+4It will be interesting to see if Apple can pull it off without Intel.
- dallyp, on 07/02/2008, -1/+15This is only with the iPhone, Intel chips will still be in their computers. Moreover, they've been doing the iPhone without Intel for an entire year, I think they're alright.
- serif69, on 07/02/2008, -0/+20They already have. No iPods or iPhones have ever used an Intel processor.
- antipoet, on 07/02/2008, -10/+16What's a spum?
- dallyp, on 07/02/2008, -8/+3It says spurn.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/02/2008, -1/+8*whoosh*
- serif69, on 07/02/2008, -4/+47It's just like a spurn, but for people who can't ***** read.
- Theisos, on 07/02/2008, -3/+2Lol. I visit Digg for the lolz!! I love this *****.

oh.
- jabberwolf, on 07/02/2008, -3/+4I'd bury you down but I'm still laughing.
Sure, I'll go with it! "APPLE SPUMS INTEL, FOR NOW!"- tidu, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1***** IT!

- dallyp, on 07/02/2008, -8/+3It says spurn.
- glennkachmar, on 07/02/2008, -2/+4They may have spurned Intel, but according to Engadget, Apple should be doing OK for chips for the next little while.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/02/apple-eats-firs ... - life036, on 07/02/2008, -2/+6How does one go about paying someone $278 million in CASH?
- johnedc, on 07/02/2008, -3/+2I'd prefer it in $10's and $20's....Please
- PrometheusBorn, on 07/02/2008, -2/+5Easy. Goto the bank, request $278 million in one dollar bills, and neatly place them in 34,750 suitcases (I believe a suitcase holds about 8000 bills) and deliver it via a 23; U Haul.
Don't you know anything about covert cash exchanges? - MavRevMatt, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Apple has something like 8 billion "in cash", while it's actually in the bank. It just means they have it and they're not in the hole.
- russdogg, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7Preferably in large sacks with dollar signs on the side.
- redxii, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3Forklift.
- life036, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2lol, thanks guys
- johnpaul191, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1"cash" = electronic transfer.
before such things existed, banks would use things like $10,000 bills for stuff like that. They had to physically transfer the money, so that's how it worked. Back in the day people would use them for transactions like buying land or maybe even a car.
- drunkenoaf, on 07/02/2008, -0/+10Apple's not spurning Intel! That would suggest it's turfing Intel out for good. All of their Macs will still be using Intel chips, so I think Apple and Intel are still quite cozy.
Spurn = reject with contempt; to kick away.- johnpaul191, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1misleading headline. Intel still hooks Apple up with custom chips (MacBook Air was a revived mini chip program just for that project). Apple also seems to get early access to some of Intel's top chips.
I've never heard people say the iPhone is lacking in the processor department (though the app store may push it?). As long as Apple can keep it in house, they are *probably* better off. When the PPC chip was in its prime, it really helped Apple to be elbow deep in the project.

- jabberwolf, on 07/02/2008, -9/+3Does Apple need Intel?
It's more like what the hell does Intel care about Apple???!!!!- amnesiac096, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1they care because their processors are in the current line of macs, that equals good business especially since everyone is on an Apple kick lately.
- myusuf3, on 07/02/2008, -6/+0i hate apple! but i also love them! its like i hate there market choices, but love their products!
- KMartSheriff, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4Cool! Thanks for sharing your opinion! We're all so interested to here about what you have to say! Exclamation point!
- drakethegreat, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1Ok so what we learned is a rumor was false and then we got to read a page and a half about stuff thats known to anyone who has followed hardware in the last couple years. Oh what some will do for readership.
- carterx, on 07/02/2008, -3/+1Would be interesting to see a new apple made/developed processor down the road though I'm sure another change over for the public would not go over too well at first.
- SealandRes1, on 07/02/2008, -4/+1Apple is trying to make their own chips to prevent clones. Remember, this is Steve Jobs running the show. This move will not to reduce the cost of manufacturing the iPhone.
Though it would be interesting to see Intel (or x86 in general) enter the mobile market.- punkcat, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1their chips are there for the mobile market, not many are biting though.
- punkcat, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1their chips are there for the mobile market, not many are biting though.
- PixelKid, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2whats with all the non-stories at the mo?? Oooh I've got an idea for a news item... "Apple spurns Kodak because they used a Canon in one of their ads!".
Get real. - JasonCox, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Damn, so you mean I wont be able to get an Core2Duo iPhone? I'm depressed!
(that's a joke, fanboys) - wigginz, on 07/02/2008, -3/+2Buried for use of the word Spurns. Because I can.
- aminorking, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3No wonder they don't use Intel chips, Intel are not aiming for the phone/portable appliance market, other chip manufacturers, that make more chips than Intel per year, aim their products at this market i.e. CSR for bluetooth. Intel mainly make chips for personal computer (Mac or Windows or Linux.....), others make chips for phones.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/02/2008, -3/+2Apple is making a big mistake turning their backs on the Intel, who is indirectly responsible for the revival of the Mac platform. Do you think Apple would be where it is today if they stuck with Power PC?
- punkcat, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3ever hear of the iPod? that intel-les piece of equipment that is turning its back on intel all the way to the bank.

- Seventus, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Give Intel some time and who knows what Apple will decide.

Everyone thinks of computer microprocessors when they think of Intel. There are so many other choices in the embedded systems environment, most of which are more specialized, where PC CPUs are highly generalized. I'd rather see Apple choose the right processor for the job than have a bunch of ignorant people boo and hiss over something they probably don't understand. - Rudegar, on 07/02/2008, -3/+1arm based cpu have a much longer track record of using little power
intel just gotten out of the p4 age where they used more power then they gave performance
cant blame apples for not jumping at the first unproven intel take on a low watt cpu - arizonagroove, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Yeah, Apple are spurning Intel real good with that range of Intel powered computers they sell. Look up the word spurn in a dictionary before you use it again.
The iPhone uses an ARM chip. ARM is huge in the handheld market. It's no surprise Apple don't have any plan to switch to an Intel chip for the iPhone. - everfresh59, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2First off, Steve Jobs got a bargain paying 278 Million, not for technology, but for a genius. That genius being Dan Dobberpuhl, this guy has worked on almost every processor used in most products today. If there's one thing Steve still holds onto, thats in believeing that it's all about hardware, and not solely about software.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P.A._Semi - cbeach, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Buried for inaccurate title.
- kineticarl, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1I'd rather see Nvidia's Tegra in there than Intel's Atom anyway.
- tama00, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Is this even news. Of course there not going to put an intel chip in a phone. You dont need apple to tell you that. They will probably use a processor from VIA at best! then more likely Motorola or AMR or something..
- dragonopolis, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1What's that phrase?
Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
Jobs learns well - alansky, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Why does everything have to be turned into a soap opera? Apple doesn't choose Intel chips, so Apple has "spurned" Intel? Ridiculous!
