Apple iTV will NOT be ready in time for Macworld
appleinsider.com — Apple chief executive Steve Jobs should have more to say about the company's forthcoming iTV set-top media hub at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco, but the launch party may have to wait a few more weeks. Apple is trying to fix a series of quality assurance-related concerns stemming strictly from the gadget's operating system software.

- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20We just have to wait and see :)
- TheDiggMan, on 10/12/2007, -35/+30The more Apple holds it off, the more the Xbox 360 gets a good grip on the media market. Apple better release "iTV" at MWSF or they might not be very successful with it.
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38TheDiggMan, you seem to be under the impression that Xbox 360 is sold as a media device. Unfortunately, the Xbox brand means people see it primarily as a games console and nothing else.
- TheDiggMan, on 10/12/2007, -14/+26@neiltc13:
I understand your point, but I meant that those millions of people who already have the 360 MIGHT not buy the iTV because their 360 can also download movie trailers, download movies, stream media from your pc, and play HD-DVDs (with an add on, I know). And everyday there are more people buying a 360. I guess we will have to wait and see what will happen. - tomtom21, on 10/12/2007, -57/+8Why are you guys digging thediggman down. I think he made a good point. I'm sick of all the apple fanboys here on digg. Why dont you guys go suck Steve Jobs dick.
- kethraal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19As I recall, a similar argument was made about the iPod. As Apple has proven time and time again, just because someone else got to market first doesn't mean that Apple can't win the majority marketshare.
- fitzfan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2590% of the people i know that have 360s dont stream videos to their 360, and probably dont even know how to.
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -19/+4The iTV can't possibly compete with the Xbox 360 in any way that future Microsoft firmware updates won't be able to close the gap again.
The only advantage the iTV will have once it's unveiled is POSSIBLY a bigger hard-drive (Xbox 360 has a measly 20 GB). It might also hold the edge in terms of the user interface, since Apple are GUI experts (streaming content onto the Xbox is kind of a bare-bones experience, even though it works flawlessly). However, considering what you get with the Xbox 360 beyond it's fully fleshed-out multimedia capabilities, the only way the iTV can hope to compete is by being WAAAY cheaper (like no more than $150-200). But knowing Apple, it'll probably cost about as much as the Xbox 360. Hell, that's how much a Video iPod costs, and all they does is play music and little movies!
Apple shouldn't even bother with this little device unless it's capable of being a hell of a lot more than what the rumors and official announcements are suggesting. - robojerk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I have found streaming to my xbox360 a pain in the ass because I have normal XP and not the media center edition. I wish my Tivo streamed divx/xvid files to my TV.. That would be better than any crap MS or apple could provide.

You see I'm a mac guy and I agree with most of what you said. I was in fact going to give you a thumbs up, but you ruined a good comment with the second sentence. - donsmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3TheDiggMan, the article just says it's going to be delayed a few weeks, not months or quarters. I don't think a 2 week ramp-up is going to matter at all, just give them hype before putting on the shelf, if indeed it deserves any hype that is...
But I tend to agree that iTV/XBox/PS3 will all compete as media devices for the living room, while the Wii remains a game only device. The question goes like this: Are non-gamer iTunes users more likely to buy an iTV, XBox 360 or a PS3? Lots of things at play like, no HD content on iTunes yet, no HD-DVD or Blueray on Macs and not all studios are signing up for iTunes just yet. Questions remaining, will MS or Apple have a good DVR (meaning as good or better than TiVo) alternative? - node3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The number of potential iTV owners is far greater than the current number of Xbox 360 users. There have been less than (but close to) 10 million 360s sold to date.
Non-gamers outnumber gamers by a *huge* margin.
- ckr4282, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I don't care whether the iTV is launched - I just want a complete feature set. I most likely won't buy it immediately since I like to wait for reports on bugs and defects.
- Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Studios other than Disney would be a good start.
- mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25I love how unsubstantiated rumors become news. Marked as Inaccurate.
- redfan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Though I agree with you that rumors shouldn't be listed as news, I'd also be very surprised if the device actually was released at MWSF. If it were coming that soon, we'd at least have a real name for it.
Anyways, if it can do for DVRs what the iPod did for digital music, it'll be very interesting. - PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2@redfan
Dugg you down since iTV is *NOT* a DVR!
- redfan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Though I agree with you that rumors shouldn't be listed as news, I'd also be very surprised if the device actually was released at MWSF. If it were coming that soon, we'd at least have a real name for it.
- Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well Duh. Apple said it would be later this year, right?
Just hurry up and get the dang Expo over with! I need a new iPod, but won't buy one until the expo is over.- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15They said 1st quarter 2007. I don't know why everyone assumed that meant MacWorld...

- superKduper, on 10/12/2007, -31/+2Apple's going to heck in a handbasket! First, we've only seen the tip of the iceberg wrt the options fraud investigation. Now they're missing publically anounced deadlines.
We all reap what we sow, including Steve Jobs.- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The never said it would ship the same day as MacWorld.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Troll often? What the heck are you talking about? They publicly announced that the iTV would be available in first quarter 2007. That means the first three months of 2007.
- drumnbass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Please provide a link to where Apple "publically (sic) announced" the iTV would be available at Macworld. I was under the impression it would be released some time in the first quarter, as Steve Jobs states in this video:

- drumnbass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Apple never said it would be ready - and this story is just a rumor. Marked as innacurate.
- Darrelc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11iAm bored of rumours been stated as news. Whos up for an "Apple Rumours" section?
- petejonesrn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Did anyone really believe that Jobs would be prepared to promise immediate shipping on iTV, especially when this is an entire new venture for Apple hardware? He'll say somthing like "Order it today; it'll start shipping in late Janurary/Early February"; which is really nothing new when it comes to Apple product announcements.
- Shaggy3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Well, no iTV.
I'm assuming no Leopard.
We'd better get some new iPod's or the rumored cellphone.
New monitor announcements are nice, but not to exciting to me. - petejonesrn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Shaggy - What are you talking about?
I can say with 100% certainty that we'll get a full Leopard preview and estimated ship dates. And we'll almost surely get a full iTV preview with estimated ship dates. Not to mention iLife 07 & iWork 07 updates.
New iPods and Displays are the gray areas at this point.
iPhone is a shot in the dark.- haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Instead of replying to a *specific* post in the 'general' reply section, try actually replying to him *directly*.
That is why they have those neat little 'reply' links, you know.

- pb3623, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Headline: "Apple iTV will NOT be ready in time for Macworld"
Article: "...but the launch party may have to wait a few more weeks."
Like any other news outlet, I suppose; capture the viewer's attention with a definitive, and then backpedal.
Nagging little observation, yes... but things like this call into question the accuracy of these rumor sites. Which is it? - dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Anyone notice how a lack of composite video or S-Video outputs makes the iTV useless for most TVs?
- pb3623, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Valid point, but don't you agree that most people wanting to add an iTV to a home theater setup have a TV with at least component inputs, if not HDMI/DVI? Most new TVs over 25" have component inputs, if not smaller... Seems like overkill to buy a $299 appliance for an aging TV.
- petejonesrn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Trust me when I say this: anyone who's been following/interested/planning to buy iTV will almost certainly have the capability to run it on their setup. People with 10 year old tubes really couldn't care less about this kind of technology; and are likely the same people who still us VHS players.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there are adapters that do/will exist. the same way you can buy the Mac Mini and there is an adapter (Apple sells one themselves) to make it an S-Video or composite output. i can also buy an adapter for my iMac to give me an S-Video output as well as something for a second monitor.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think anyone who's going to pay a couple of hundred dollars to stream video to their TV has a unit that has something with better video quality than composite or S-Video.
- Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Be realistic guys.... This is what's going to be happening at Macworld.
What's the keynote... 1-1.5 hrs?
That leaves room for only...
iLife'07/iWork (20-30mins)
Revisiting Leopard (they did a rehash of Tiger 2 years ago) - 20-30 mins
New Hardware (Displays, new iMac/Mac Pro) - 15 mins
iTV Announcement Launch Mid Feb - 15 mins
Thats the keynote for you!- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There's no hard limit on how long the keynote can go.
-jcr - Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe Mac Mini Core 2?
Your predictions seem the most plausable. There might be a surprise or two, but I think you've got it close to dead-on. This does seem prime time to release a Core 2 Mini, which I might add as a possible. - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's 2 hours this year, from 9-11.
http://www.macworldexpo.com/live/20/events/20SFO07A/keynotes - newbill123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My guess is that you're close. I'm betting that the keynote will be organized more along these lines...
1. Recap of recent Apple Successes (sales, marketshare increase, profitability)
2. Consumer marketed items (new iTunes store partners, iPod accessories, iTV)
3. Consumer Macintosh items (Leopard family friendly demo (e.g. Parental Controls), dot Mac refresh, iLife 2007)
4. Home Office Macintosh items (Roz Ho of Microsoft's Mac team talks about next MS Office, Symantec speaks, iWork 2007)
5. Touch on future (drop hints about pro apps refresh, Mac hardware refresh, and Leopard release)
6. One more thing: Talk about one hardware item being released or refreshed that's relevant to the consumer audience.
Other than the first section, all the areas will follow the format: partnership news, several minor news items, one major news item. Only one major news item will be announced per group since more than that would dilute the message.
There may be things that are released or refreshed at MacWorld but are not mentioned in the keynote. This is common; Apple prefers to keep it's message focused rather than covering every speed bump, every monitor size refresh, and every minor feature added to programs. The Pro market (for Aperture, Final Cut, etc) will have their projects tweaked at a different conference. And it's likely that, other than demonstrating a few features everyone already knows about, the top secret Leopard stuff will get a special Apple event all to its own.
MacWorld talks to consumers and home office workers; beyond that audience Apple's message will look confused.
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There's no hard limit on how long the keynote can go.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they can still demo it, maybe even announce a price and release date.
i am going to guess the main reason it was not hurried for christmas is that it requires 802.11N to properly stream video. from what i read about 802.11N recently, it will not be finalized till sometime in 2008. there is a draft2-N due this year (in a few months?) and that draft2-N is expected to be a firmware upgrade away from the final version of N. granted draftN works great with draftN stuff right now, but it might be goofy with draf2-N and the final N coming in the next year or so.
*if* that stuff i read is true, then the iTV is kind of hung up for a bit.
remember that the one that was showed in the summer was a working prototype. we don't know all the features for sure. we know basically what it does, but there could be more than showed or less than rumored. - slantyyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been teetering between the iTV and the Mediagate 350HD for the past month or so, and right now I'd rather have the MediaGate (broad codec support as well as with HD files), since details on the iTV media support has been rather thin. Hopefully that will change after the keynote, but one thing is for sure -- I think streaming devices suck. I prefer devices that can read off CIFS/SMB shares off a nas. I'd stick with my noisy XBOX+XBMC, but it's been having some issues with xvids and can't even play HD files without a lot of headaches.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just as your iPods dock lets you route the music through your Hi-Fi, this will let you route your computers video through your Tv. Its just another connector/accessory. If you have Mac and a decent Tv then you will already have a stand alone DVD player, that just means you can watch stuff you downloaded through it. Probably created to avoid having to allow users to burn films to DVD to watch em. Its in the small print in the Disney contract somewhere.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It never was going to be ready. Steve said at the speech back in September that it would be announced at MacWorld, not released at MacWorld.

- krolls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am really pretty comfortable with my 5g iPod loaded with TV shows sitting in a iPod dock on top of my dolby receiver... if iTv is all about "streaming content from your computer" and not about providing movies and tv shows on demand then I think I will stick to only one $299 apple product
- hendzen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1By the way, I just figured out the name for the iTV.

- thomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"People familiar with the matter say Apple now aims to begin shipping iTV (likely under a different product name) in late January or early February."
The "(likely under a different product name)" part proves that this just coming from people that don't know what they are talking about. When Apple first announced the iTV they said the name was just a code name and not the final name. If they don't know that then why would we believe they know anything about when it is coming out.
