Apple's iPhone 3G Guided Tour Reveals Extra Details
appleinsider.com — New video walkthroughs of iPhone 3G help illustrate how to use the phone and what's changed in software, but also spill details of changes to the hardware design, a free official AOL instant messenger client, and more.

- joeycerone, on 07/02/2008, -12/+23The guided tours are available in both a 38-minute beginner's guide to the entire phone or a condensed, 12-minute edition that shows just the new features added with iPhone 3G and its iPhone 2.0 software.
One of the most conspicuous changes is to the speakers. Briefly alluded to during the iPhone 3G's introduction at WWDC, the "dramatically improved audio" of the updated iPhone is now attributed directly to its new microphone and speakers.
A look at the bottom of the device, which has been hidden from view in most early looks, also shows two screws at either end of the Dock Connector -- an unusual design concession for a company that normally prides itself on hiding screws from view on its handheld devices.
And while most software demonstrations in the videos are of expected features, the front view of the App Store shows an AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) application that confirms a March 6th demo has translated to a finished and likely free application that may be available with the App Store's opening on July 11th.
The software could potentially be used to mitigate the lack of include SMS messages with AT&T's standard iPhone plans.
Downloading and installing third-party applications is also shown to be different than with purchases through the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. Instead of managing a separate queue, inbound apps surface directly on the home screen, with a progress bar indicating how close they are to completion. Apps immediately become active once downloaded.
Update: AppleInsider forum member Berzerker notes that the guided tour also demonstrates a feature of iPhone 2.0 that will allow users to enable Wi-Fi on Wi-Fi enabled flights without leaving Airplane mode.- chewy5000, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2now if only you could post pictures...
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Most of Apple's products have at least a couple of basic, external, stainless screws for maintenance or RAM expansion etc. Up until now the iPhone was one of the exceptions. It would seem they added those because it saves the trouble and training to teach would be employees how to open the back of the phone. Now, you open the two screws.
Why are you copying the article over here? It's only the forums that go down over there ;)
- MikeSetera, on 07/02/2008, -8/+14I digg the free apps and bootleg the rest.
- TheWeez, on 07/02/2008, -3/+20If it's useful to you, pay for it. That's the only way people will continue to make quality applications. In an age where the youth pirate everything, it should be interesting to see if companies will continue to produce quality applications or make more and more horridly absurd verification processes.
- MikeSetera, on 07/02/2008, -3/+9Oh I hear ya, but really if I see a couple of games I wanna play for 5 minutes, I'm not paying $9.99 a pop. But certainly if an app comes along that really changes the device for me, I will pay.
Side note: I would pay for copy/paste and flash, but I shouldn't have to! ._. - SealandRes1, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3I disagree, what about firefox extensions, and jailbreak apps? There are quality applications that are free because of alternative sources of revenue, or simply a free time project.

Nice touch. - Jordan117, on 07/02/2008, -10/+4AOL? On an iPhone? Wouldn't that cause an explosion, like matter and antimatter?
(Well, it is AIM. But still... *shiver*)- bryanwebster, on 07/02/2008, -1/+10Apple's iChat is based around aol messenger so they have a history of working together.
- Twee, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3That's why AOL doesn't make an official AIM client for Mac OS X anymore, since Apple makes iChat.
- nedzeve, on 07/02/2008, -7/+3Why? Both Apple and AOL cater to retards.
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1If Apple did cater to those type of people (the slang term) they'd have a much higher market-share in the US :P

- Turbosc, on 07/02/2008, -2/+11I'm sure there will be other IM alternatives... that's a big place to capitalize at this point.
- johnpaul191, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1well, remember that Apple has the ability to lock out other chat clients *if* they chose to. Adium on the iPhone would be awesome.
Of course i mean from the app store, not in terms of jailbreaking. - morphinapg, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2they need to bring digsby to iPhone

- Jsoul87, on 07/02/2008, -1/+31So let me get this straight: Apple ships the phone with a pre-installed IM program to promote alternatives to SMS but at the same time balances subsidizing for a lower retail price with AT$T under the premise that SMS will be extra.
God damn Apple has some ***** geniuses.- meamog, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2See - the thing about AIM is, while great (and Apollo will hopefully be greater), your recipient also has to have an IM client on. It's not standard like SMS. Granted, it would be great if everyone had an IM client on their phone, but it's not an either-or situation yet.
- popz41, on 07/02/2008, -0/+10You can send SMSs' through aim. People can reply back to them and they're sent to your phone.
- killerofkiller, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5just send an im to the phone number with "+" in front of it
- solidus636, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6so for example, the number is 408-555-5555.. then you would put in:
+14085555555
as the buddy...and it will send them the text.
- dinkola, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Its not a pre-installed IM program. It states that the app store shows an IM client. You have to get it from the app-store, the same as all other applications.

- PosedMagnet, on 07/02/2008, -17/+18Funny how there's an "airplane" mode on phones still.
Do people even realize that using a phone on a plane has absolutely no effect whatsoever?
Where did this myth even come from?- Tagaiz, on 07/02/2008, -2/+9The airplane mode just turns off wifi and edge/3g to conserve battery life. Nothing else.
- PosedMagnet, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3I know. I mean in general.
There's no point in having an "airplane mode", instead of a "turn off network access" - it insinuates that using a cell phone on an airplane is somehow dangerous.
Just pointing out how it's odd that all these phones call it that.
- PosedMagnet, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3I know. I mean in general.
- DillonHinson, on 07/02/2008, -3/+7Even the Mythbusters proved it's harmless!
- jepitsch, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Actually they did not prove it was harmless. They proved that the wiring was sheilded enough that it didn't interfere. Phones can interfere with plans, that has been proven especially by a crash in Europe or the middle east when someone left their phone on and someone called. Let's just say that the person ended up unable to talk after that. Deterioration of the wiring or something exposed could easily cause these issues.
- PosedMagnet, on 07/02/2008, -3/+11I don't know why retards are digging me down.
Proof: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phones_on_airc ...
"While certainly not a rigorous scientific study, the Discovery Channel television program MythBusters examined the "myth" that mobile phones are banned aboard aircraft to force passengers to use the airline's inflight phones. They concluded that this is "busted." Their tests caused no interference to a small airplane's avionics, but did so to unshielded equipment. They concluded that interference could occur aboard an aircraft if the shielding was not working correctly."- chochazel, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2 If you want to know why people are digging you down, look at the first answer to your post. (I'd avoid your incomprehensible reply to it though). Everybody already knows it's a myth, that doesn't mean that it's a myth that many airlines still ban them, or that you can save lots of battery when you couldn't possible get a signal.
- PosedMagnet, on 07/02/2008, -4/+0My reply is just fine. I think you just have a hard time reading.
- nedzeve, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3We just do it out of spite.
- tedrock, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1What did you think the airplane mode did? Turned the phone off?
- PosedMagnet, on 07/02/2008, -0/+13Turn it into a plane.
- johnpaul191, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6The reason is that the FAA does not have the means to test EVERY handset out there. Instead of possibly missing one that causes a problem, they would rather play it safe. That's exactly the point that the Mythbusters made after saying they did not find the handset(s) they tested seemed to cause no problems.
Hey, look at the audio interference that all the GSM AT&T/T-Mobile phones cause. If that phone was in the wrong spot and was bleeding onto airplane communications lines.... it could be an issue of some sort. I have had those things bleed through really high quality shielded microphone cables. - cgruber, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2It certainly works to stop the interference with my non-iPhone speaker dock so if for nothing else I'm glad they have it.
- Zippo, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2The real reason is that airlines don't want to test everything and feel the best approach is to just ban all forms of wireless signals - just makes it easier and prevents any slight possible problem....
Also, they don't want everyone gabbing away on their phones during flights... and I kinda can't argue with that. People get bored on flights and a lot of people get on their phones and talk loudly when they're bored. - kosmoe, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6I'm and electrical engineer and have worked in the cellular field for a number of years. One cell phone is not any threat to a plane, but many phones being used on a plane may very well cause problems. Beyond that, cellular networks were never intended or designed to provide service to a plane traveling at 400 mph and 5 miles up. If you are able to make a call, it's sheer luck and will likely be the worst call of you've ever had and very short. Besides, who wants to be on a plane with a bunch of idiots having pointless conversations, loudly? "I'll be landing in 30 minutes. What do you want for dinner?.... No you decide... I decided last night... Not that again, let's try something else... How's your rash?..."
Just shoot me!
As far as I'm concerned the FAA is providing a invaluable service by restricting phone use.
- Tagaiz, on 07/02/2008, -2/+9The airplane mode just turns off wifi and edge/3g to conserve battery life. Nothing else.
- wonderchemist, on 07/02/2008, -7/+2Mighty Morphin' Keyboards!
- briankeith, on 07/02/2008, -1/+14The way this article is written, I would have sworn.. it's to announce, some really cool new hidden feature. Then I read on.. the iphone has "exposed" screws. :/
- ikoul, on 07/02/2008, -2/+13Can't you send SMS through AIM anyway? I do it all the time. I wonder if they'll disable that functionality in the iPhone app, since it'd let people effectively circumvent AT&T's messaging to some degree if not completely.
- solidus636, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2I certainly hope not. I sure as HELL am not gonna pay 5 extra dollars a month just to send the small amount of texts I usually do. That AIM feature is one of the best things about having an internet enabled phone.
- DDMX, on 07/02/2008, -3/+24WTF is with those screws?
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2You place a Philips screwdriver firmly up against them a turn it in an anti-clockwise direction, I believe after you do that a number of times on both screws you can open the back of the phone for maintenance or troubleshooting of hardware issues, if/when required. It beats having to ***** up the phone like the old one to - fix it.
- nextsteposx, on 07/02/2008, -7/+6$15 AT&T internet plan.
1.Just after a month with the iPhone 3G package, call their 800 number and say got rid of your iPhone.
2. Say you want the $15 internet plan for your (Pick any cheap non smartphone you may have lying around) ie. Razr.
3.Wait 5 minutes, try surfing on cheap Razr, then proceed to Remove Sim chip back into iPhone 3G.
$15 dollar internet for iPhone, sure you may not have visual voice mail, but who cares. Also you can add Text messaging plans if you so choose to.
Also, this is legal, you do own an ie. Razr and bought the plan accordingly. But with AT&T you can have 999+ phones and just switch SIM chips...
I love AT&T & T-Mobile with SIM chips, Verizon and Sprint I will never ever use.
Update, this can also work, by borrowing an friends 1st gen iPhone and registering the phone and thus getting the 1st gen $20 plan. Then your friend just re updates his phone again. Unproven.- DDMX, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6Won't they charge you an early cancellation fee of a few hundred bucks?
- solidus636, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Yeah they will.
From the AT&T memo:
To cancel service within the first 30 days, the customer must return their equipment to the place of purchase (no exceptions). If the customer cancels service after 30 days, they will be charged the ETF. The customer is not required to return the device to cancel after 30 days. - PosedMagnet, on 07/02/2008, -3/+0He said to say you got rid of the PHONE, not the PLAN.
- solidus636, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Yeah they will.
- ceuyan, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1if i borrow a 2st gen iPhone and activate it before July 11th, will i be able to get the iPhone 3G for 199?
- DDMX, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6Won't they charge you an early cancellation fee of a few hundred bucks?
- sykotic, on 07/02/2008, -3/+12Screws mean user replaceable battery access?
- Scanner771, on 07/02/2008, -4/+1No, you still have to send it in if you don't want to void your warranty. It is $79, plus $6.95 for shipping
It sucks
http://www.apple.com/batteries/replacements.html- MindStalker, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Currently Apple Air notebook has battery that can be replaced by most technitions. The HUGE advantage of this is you can take it physically to any Apple Store and they will replace the battery right then and there instead of you having to ship it off and wait days. Hopefully if the new IPhone battery is tech replacable they will also train AT&T store people for this, as many places don't have Apple stores.
- kpetree10, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2But there are people like me who will replace the battery myself anyway, even if it means voiding the warranty.
- Scanner771, on 07/02/2008, -4/+1No, you still have to send it in if you don't want to void your warranty. It is $79, plus $6.95 for shipping
- Stwo, on 07/02/2008, -4/+9The ability to easily turn off 3G is SICK! I currently have a 3G phone and it sucks battery life, even when not in a 3G coverage area.
- waydee, on 07/02/2008, -7/+1You have a ***** phone or you have no clue how to use it, i've never even seen a phone that didnt have the option to stick to GSM networks only.
- tibe, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4GSM is a standard which includes 2G and 3G. So the phone is always on a GSM network. The iPhone will always 'stick to GSM networks only' as it only supports GSM.
- waydee, on 07/02/2008, -7/+1You have a ***** phone or you have no clue how to use it, i've never even seen a phone that didnt have the option to stick to GSM networks only.
- digitallysick, on 07/02/2008, -5/+7If the latest software update offers no MMS or unrestricted bluetooth/chat client. Then i am done, i will unlock and sell my iphone on ebay. As of right now, hardware wise, why buy the new iphone? All the hardware is the same except the 3G. No video, or better camera, no blue tooth stereo , or un restricted blue tooth. I hate to use a cable to connect my phone, my old nokia i could just blue tooth my whole mp3 songs, and photos, etc to my computer without any issue.
- username7410, on 07/02/2008, -2/+4GPS
- Firehed, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2Well the bluetooth is just a software thing, and at the end of the day I'd rather see an app store than a2dp support given the choice of one or the other. Between that and the Exchange/push stuff, I expect the iPhone software team has been pretty busy. I wouldn't count out more useful bluetooth functionality in the future. But by all means, if it's that important then get a phone that supports it now; I could care less so I'll stick with my iPhone as it is now (and no, I won't be getting the 3G any time soon - I'm lucky to get any signal where I live let alone 3G, and already own a GPS)
- kohoutec, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Don't forget the screws
- JD52, on 07/02/2008, -16/+2Things a POS and costs too much. Even with 3G you fan boys are still taking it in the ass. I suspect that is just how many of you like it. IMHO
- viewofeverlast, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Hopefully the iPhone 3G will be able to sync its phonebook with the handsfree calling in my car!
- encrypter, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2would gps require a data plan? i live in canada and I'm hoping to buy an unlocked iPhone and use it with a corporate plan that doesn't include data.
- Scanner771, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3In some ways it dose because you would have to use Google Maps, it has to download the images and data.
- professorfurley, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4i officially hate the word "tap" now
- crussell96, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2tap, tap, tap it in
- thejmann07, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4free twitterific??!@ free aim??!@ free eBay??!@ ZING!
- howdareyou, on 07/02/2008, -5/+10I hate how Apple refers to their devices such as the iPhone as just "iPhone". Everything is like "iPhone lets you do this" It just sounds weird and pretentious.
- DlGG, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7But... what else would they call it?
- Radan, on 07/02/2008, -5/+3i5023E 3G for example, so much easier to remember than that 'aFone' or whatever it's called.
- PosedMagnet, on 07/02/2008, -3/+8Prefixing it with "the" would help.
It's like those assholes who say ***** like "Oh when baby takes her first step.." ... it's "THE BABY", not "baby".
People tend to sound like complete arrogant douchebags when they talk like that. - JoeyDeacon, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3I couldn't agree more.
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2I agree, and I'm a fanboy. Well sort of ;)
- DlGG, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7But... what else would they call it?
- professoraloha, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Technology in itself will never again be "perfect"...get used to it and just spend your money on whatever cool new thing that does something you want now. Be ready for the fact that every month for the rest of your life---a new product will come out that makes your current one (whatever) suck! I'm getting a 3G phone on the 11th...no matter who is running the service.
- waydee, on 07/02/2008, -12/+1Buried as iphonespam
- jcwuerfl, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3DOWN WITH SMS! WE DONT NEED IT! ... LONG LIVE IM!
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2I take you're American right? Not the loud obnoxious typing, but the fact that you say you don't need SMS.
- kineticarl, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1Video's good, but how about a flash-based virtual iphone on apple.com that lets me play with the interface from my desk? I'd like that.
- iet2004, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1seriously, why don't they just call it a macbook nano? lol. i mean i now have ZERO reason to carry my laptop around. unless i wanna do some video editing in public?
- pratapchowdary, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0could have done better, i mean the guidetour
