Apple to drop iTunes 7.5 sometime next week
appleinsider.com — A new version of Apple Inc.'s iTunes media software due as early as next week will deliver a number of small refinements, but is not expected to introduce any major new features, AppleInsider has learned. Due for release as iTunes 7.5, the software update will offer increased stability and better management of duplicate song and video entries, peop

- streak, on 11/06/2007, -4/+23I imagine an update will be necessary to support the iPhone rollout in the UK on the 9th.
- stalefries, on 11/06/2007, -3/+8Why? There won't be any new features (as far as we know).
- mikev, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3It will most likely be some stupid minor thing like letting iTunes read the phones SIM to pull the phone number for the Summary tab (remember, unlocked iPhones don't have the phone number display in the summary tab in iTunes)
- TomKarpik, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Uh, yeah they do. Mine has had it all along (1.0.2, 1.1.1, iUnlock unlocked, IPSF unlocked).
- Radan, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Well, mine doesn't. 1.0.2 (the one before 1.1.1), using a Swedish Vodafone/Telenor card.

- streak, on 11/02/2007, -0/+9Think about it. Phone number conventions differ, service providers differ, service plans differ, activation procedures and laws/licenses/disclaimers no doubt differ, credit card information might differ, activation servers might differ. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bunch of other stuff "we" don't know about that changes when going international.
- brundlefly76, on 11/04/2007, -2/+9I am really getting tired of updating iTunes every time I use it - Apple really needs to make the update process happen in the background and/or not require a reboot - its so annoying.
- ChuckIT, on 11/05/2007, -2/+1i second that.
- Myonosken, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1Reboot? I've never had to reboot. Unless you mean restart- in which case I'd like to ask how you expect to update the executable.
- brundlefly76, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1The Windows version asks that you restart windows, not just the application, after an upgrade.
Its completely unnecessary - I think its just Apple trying to annoy Windows users.
I like the way Firefox upgrades, its very noninvasive.

- JimJimBinks, on 11/02/2007, -8/+17I'm really hoping for better 64 bit vista Support. The lack of iPhone support is the only thing keeping me from the 64 bit version of Vista.
- cfazzini, on 11/02/2007, -1/+4Oh god yes please. Won't happen though. I use xp32 loaded in vmware, sucks, but it works.

- roberto_deneero, on 11/04/2007, -0/+116Reliable sources say that iTunes 8.0 will continue to support song playback and even continue to burn CDs.

- weirdlookinguy, on 11/04/2007, -10/+34I think it'll be clunky and slow! Wait, I heard that version is already out...
- DMCer, on 11/04/2007, -11/+6Sounds like you need to learn when you need a new computer, and when you need a new version of iTunes.
- leonhyral, on 11/04/2007, -3/+11You shouldn't require a "good" computer to simply play an mp3 file. iTunes is bloated and horrible, not only aesthetically but functionally too.
- Monk22, on 11/04/2007, -2/+2remember winamp before AOL bought it? it was freaking sweet. then it got all bloaty and *****. much like i tunes.

- sonicularulus, on 11/02/2007, -1/+3I say that high definition video downloads are going to happen.
TV Show downloads for canada, i feel, wont require any major software upgrades as it is just a system change on their side of the system.
As in clunky and slow, from what I see on the Tiger to Leopard changes, I highly doubt that. - daza, on 11/04/2007, -5/+29CoverFlow 2.0? Now twice as useless?

Surprisingly nice when you actually own the music though.- Seph7, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2Umm yea actually itunes will give you the artwork to any mp3s you import into your library pirated or purchased, as long as they're tagged correctly and iTunes has the artwork.

- jasongdx, on 11/02/2007, -5/+14They need to update Quicktime for Vista... I can only play a video for so long in iTunes or QT Player before it "stops working."
- Okari, on 11/02/2007, -0/+5I can barely get videos to play at all in iTunes. My Firefox is still crashing whenever I open a quicktime file inside it. What a pain in the ass.
- kingkilr, on 11/02/2007, -0/+4Open up quicktime, go to Edit->Preferences->Quicktime Preferences->Advanced and select safe mode in place of DirectX.
- positron, on 11/02/2007, -22/+15I know how to fix that. Uninstall Vista.
- FreakyT, on 11/02/2007, -9/+2Ahh, brilliant idea! Then we can install Linux, and embedded videos might kind of work, or even crash the X server! I can't wait!

- skyshock1, on 11/02/2007, -2/+3+1
- RollFizzlebeef, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1I was having the same problems with video podcasts in iTunes on Vista - then I updated my video drivers and it seems to be solved.
I also reimaged my hard drive a couple days ago - because Vista was having fits - and it seems to be running much, much better with a clean install of all the updates. - manageMyRights, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Quicktime is a disaster even on mac. It's a good thing for Steve that VLC exists or the mac userbase would be a lot lower... what do u mean my new shiny mac can't play an avi?
- Iwantawii, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1I use Perian:
http://www.perian.org/
It basically patches Quicktime to play .avi, .xvid, .etc. What's neat is that allows FrontRow to play these files if they're in your ~/Movies directory. iTunes is still at a loss though.
- Iwantawii, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1I use Perian:
- TheWorm, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1VLC is very buggy software. I hate it when it quits on me in the middle of a movie, but in terms of what it will play, it is far superior to quicktime. Been using it for a couple years, and now whenever I get a new computer it is one of the first things i install.
- my8bird, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2I have no issue with QT in Vista. iTunes on the otherhand is a virus that should not be installed on any Windows machine.
- Okari, on 11/02/2007, -0/+5I can barely get videos to play at all in iTunes. My Firefox is still crashing whenever I open a quicktime file inside it. What a pain in the ass.
- jrattner1, on 11/03/2007, -13/+3Rumor is iTunes 8.0 will include linux support....NOT
- Breepee, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Would be cool tho.

- Iwantawii, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1I don't know why you're dugg down for that comment. On the road I download a lot of iTunes TV shows, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to play these files on a Linux home theater? Or any linux media box for that matter. If nothing else it would break this DRM barrier for what still has it.
- cojerk, on 11/06/2007, -5/+87What a lousy title. I mistook "drop" as in "discontinue".
- roberto_deneero, on 11/02/2007, -10/+3Drop is an industry term meaning "release". I supposed the stole it from the music industry, which drops new titles on Tuesdays each week. I guess some people have to try to do the little things to sound important.
- Calculon, on 11/02/2007, -0/+8I heard it crazy phat stupid too.. oh, and rollin' on dubs.

- jjbtexas, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3yeah i really don't want my iphone bricked
- JR007, on 11/02/2007, -0/+6Dumb question, but can you install iTunes without Quicktime? I already have Quicktime installed and it works perfect, so I rather not update it.
- diggn_it, on 11/02/2007, -1/+6not a dumb question, and I think the answer is no. I've heard other people complain that they can't install iTunes without quicktime, which makes sense because iTunes uses quicktime to play the videos and does not want to risk someone getting an error because they don't have it.
- Iwantawii, on 11/03/2007, -1/+2That should be no problem for the actual Quicktime playback libraries. But they pin that lousy icon in your system tray and bug you about updating. Quicktime is powerful but it's too in-your-face to be liked in Windows.
- abid786, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1I believe that newer versions of iTunes require newer versions of Quicktime to work
- InitialDMP5, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1every new version of iTunes requires the newest version of Quicktime. That way everyone that has iTunes has all the same features, or at least the ability to have them
- 0xFEEDFACE, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1Depends on which version of Quicktime you have. If you have the latest one, then yes, you should be able to install iTunes on top of that, without having to first re-install it. If, on the other hand, you have an older version of Quicktime, you may have to update it first before iTunes will install.
- HUKI365, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1iTunes is completely screwed without Quicktime. It can't even open on Windows.
- diggn_it, on 11/02/2007, -1/+6not a dumb question, and I think the answer is no. - seanhive, on 11/02/2007, -2/+60Just means more of iTunes' automatic updates hassling me "HAY DOOD WANA UPDATE NAO LOL?" when I've got only 90 seconds to sync my iPod and get out the door!

- geekee, on 11/02/2007, -9/+24iTunes is the most annoying piece of crap when you want to keep your music collection on multiple computers.
- InitialDMP5, on 11/02/2007, -1/+11If you are going to do that, you should just have one computer act as a music server and then then use iTunes to stream the music to the other computers in your home network. It actually works quite well. Why waste storage space on other computers???
- fahrvergnuugen, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2I agree, accept I wish iTunes clients would let you make changes to the iTunes server library (such as play counts, ratings, etc). It's supposed to be for personal use only, right?

- Iwantawii, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1I took a plunge and bought the new Airport Extreme home router with the USB port. It sounded like a great idea to host my iTunes library on an attached hard drive, then have the library accessible to 2 laptops and a Mac Mini. This was a joke and it's never quite "worked". The iTunesLibrary.xml file that manages your library produces many inconsistencies when multiple computers use the library for adding/removing/managing the music in the library. I was really bummed. Sometimes it worked fine, sometimes half the library would be "not found", and the artwork vanished frequently.

- Saiing, on 11/02/2007, -7/+30It's a small update that isn't expected to introduce any new features. Great... so it makes the front page of Digg. Seriously, some people will just click anything that has any connection with Apple.
Tune in next week, when we'll have a story about an Apple employee ordering a new packet of pencils for the office.

- GreenAlien, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1You obviously wasnt around when there was no iTunes for Windows and third gen iPods (and presumably previous gens too) shipped with one almighty useless piece of turd. The day iTunes got released for Windows was the closest I ever came to believing in a God.
But yea, iTunes has its bugs. Video freezes for a few seconds when podcasts finish downloading in the background, trying to play video podcasts via the Downloads folder only plays the audio part, and on-screen video controls are temperamental. If the next update fixes those I'll be happy. - sputty01, on 11/02/2007, -0/+0Unfortunately i think theres more chance of Steve Jobs coming round to your house and slapping you around the face with his great big iWeiner.

- slib, on 11/02/2007, -3/+11This just in! Major software dealer releases UPDATE to one of its largest programs! This is sure newsworthy, especially once you consider the fact that iTunes/whatever else Apple slid in the back door will inform you of any updates available AUTOMATICALLY. Dig it up, guys. It's really important.
- ArthurArchnix, on 11/02/2007, -1/+14Any word if that cutting edge technology called "folder monitoring" has made it into this release?
Is it even possible to code for managing folders and dupes without the ability to monitor folders? Are they planning on selling a pro version that includes the functionality of winamp 2.1 at some point in the future?
/Hates itunes. Amarok FTW.- coollettuce, on 11/02/2007, -2/+2I would have buried you a week ago but I recently switched to ubuntu and ***** yeah, amarok is amazing.
- miniboss, on 11/02/2007, -0/+10Only one thing I've ever asked for in iTunes. "Watched Folders". Just tell iTunes what folder(s) to watch and iTunes will figure out if a new song is added or removed.
Every other app does it so why not iTunes? Plus with libraries getting so huge then it also allows us to span across multiple volumes. - truegodofwar, on 11/03/2007, -3/+4pshh, I switched to rythmbox a couple months ago and never looked back.

- potterboy, on 11/02/2007, -7/+9To all the iTunes haters:
Yes, the Windows port of iTunes is clunky and slow and pathetic for sharing over a network but that is not what makes iTunes so great. It is the fact that it seamlessly integrates with the iPod and is so easy to use that my grandmother uses it. It is extremely refined and while I believe it is going downhill in quality (Window especially) it is still the best player out there for several features such as podcast integration or audiobooks. Lets not forget having the Music Store built in as well. I am an audiobook fanatic who listens to 3 or 4 books a week. iTunes is simply the best when it comes to ripping cd's for my iPod (join tracks, rip to aac 32kb, rename to .m4b with batch file) but it also makes organization of large audiobook and music libraries braindead simple. It keeps both of them separate and yet they both work the same way. The above comes from a Vista user and a Zune owner.- ArthurArchnix, on 11/02/2007, -3/+8Ok, first, the fact that it "seamless integrates with the iPod" isn't a feature, it's the entire purpose of its existence. So let's not lose our load if it manages to do the one thing for which it was originally created. What's amazing is that other players seamlessly integrate with the ipod, even though Apple is a closed source bastard and locks down their hardware with encryption and the like. Second, it's a media player. If you're grandma couldn't use it that would bring to 1, the number of media players grandmas' couldn't use. So let's not pretend that it has some super amazing cow power of ease of use that is totally lacking elsewhere. The only thing that you said that makes sense is that it can use the Music Store. That is a feature. It makes me wonder why I can't point my browser at the music store, or why apple hasn't released an API for other media players to integrate with it. I think Jobs must hate money.
"Oh, you want to shop at Walmart? Sure, just put these shoes on. Sorry, you must use our shoes. They're free! They're designed to intergrate with the store."- DaffyDuck, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1replied in wrong spot.
- skyshock1, on 11/02/2007, -2/+4"The above comes from a Vista user and a Zune owner."
That explains a lot. If you'd ever used amaroK, you would be laughing at yourself for ever writing this comment.- Izacus, on 11/02/2007, -0/+4Right after almost crying, because amaroK's interface was designed by someone on drugs. It has to be most cluttered, nonfunctional and confusing interface ever to show in a media player.
- GreenAlien, on 11/02/2007, -3/+5@ArthurArchix: Actually potterboy was spot on. The fact it integrates with iPod seamlessly is a feature, of course it is. There's no other software which integrates with a music player this well. And secondly, the fact a novice can use it with ease is also a testament to its design. I don't see how those can be refuted. If you've managed to find third-party software which does the basics well then good for you but that doesnt refute potterboy's post and ironically it made alot more sense than your own.
- ArthurArchnix, on 11/02/2007, -3/+5Saying itunes seamlessly integrates with ipods is like saying my dad's walkman seamlessly integrates with his batteries. Since when did we start bragging about this? The ipod when it first shipped was a broken product. Couldn't be used without itunes. Kinda like... oh, a walkman and batteries.
And yes, the fact that a novice can use it says something about its design. I've yet to encounter a music player a novice couldn't use, but heck, if that's all you got to brag about then by all means, bray away.
I'll stand by my original statment. Itunes has the store. It's a great player. But if you're gonna compare it to other players out there the store is the only thing itunes has that others don't.- DaffyDuck, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1If you have ever tried Sony's Open MG software with their MD player (what a nightmare) you would realize that a seamless experience is a feature that not all of the players have managed to figure out.

- 0xFEEDFACE, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1On the Mac, iTunes isn't too bad. It launches quickly, is very stable, and is a pretty solid player.
That said, I have noticed that what's left of YellowBox doesn't tend to do too well on Win32 anymore. Actually... I don't even think Apple's using YellowBox for iTunes/Safari -- AFAIK, they're using newly crafted (limited) implementations of CoreFoundation, etc. for Win32... so there's a lot of new code there.
- ArthurArchnix, on 11/02/2007, -3/+8Ok, first, the fact that it "seamless integrates with the iPod" isn't a feature, it's the entire purpose of its existence.
- thomasthecat, on 11/03/2007, -6/+4I'd like to be able to burn CDs again in Windows. kthxbye.
- GreenAlien, on 11/03/2007, -3/+1Well people are digging you down, but yes, me too. Itunes was great for that and at some point/version (Windows version) it started to make coasters every time i tried it.
- thehurricaneuk, on 11/03/2007, -3/+1dugg down for asking the question "why am i being dugg down" :P
- GreenAlien, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1@thehurricaneuk: Learn to read. I wasnt asking a question, and it wasnt even me that posted the previous comment. I was making an observation that he was being dugg down but that he actually had a valid point.
- jydesign, on 11/02/2007, -0/+8OK, so make coverflow act like it does on the iPods - allow for 'flipping' and album over to see the songs...
- FredFredrickson, on 11/03/2007, -1/+2Coverflow is useless.
- ChromaVita, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Does anyone else find it weird that Coverflow is either backwards on the iphone, or backwards on macbooks? The albums move with your finger on the iphone, and the opposite direction on the laptops.
- rowlodge, on 11/03/2007, -2/+1does hang for some reason, glad i wasn't the only one.
- geogia456, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1 better management of duplicate song and video entries, peop? Why there are many people at millionairematch said" the wolf with fur"
- weasler7, on 11/03/2007, -3/+4Omg, more features? Now iTunes will be even more memory efficient!
Musikcrap ftw. - maiku00, on 11/03/2007, -2/+4it just gets bigger and bigger and more and more bloated. I wish they would ***** slim it down.
- M600i, on 11/03/2007, -0/+5Interesting... I hope they really improve the Windows version... It's just so slow to use :/ Anyways, the mac version is great :)
- thedinomeister, on 11/02/2007, -0/+0I agree 100 percent.
I have no idea what went wrong with iTunes on vista, it's the same freaking program but uses up an endless amount of ram.
- thedinomeister, on 11/02/2007, -0/+0I agree 100 percent.
- jbond, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1And the big question. Which hacks will it break?
- thedinomeister, on 11/02/2007, -0/+0what hacks? who hacks iTunes?
- stocis, on 11/02/2007, -0/+0i guess he's talking about the iphone.. tho no update is being made til february (i think)
- acidbathfan, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1It would be great if they would make I-tunes pages for artists kinda like rhapsody does so that all you would have to do is type in
itunes.com/radiohead or itunes.com/nin to find artists pages, it would also make it easier for indie artists to promote their music on itunes instead of on sites like myspace or purevolume.
It's a page right out of the old mp3.com playbook that has proved time and time again to work in help promoting not only the music store or site but also in helping promote the artist that drives traffic to the said page or site- brwnx, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1So, what you are saying is that ITMS doesnt sell any music or promotes any artists???
- insidesource, on 11/03/2007, -0/+4All I want is to be able to create better Smartplaylists. Keep the basic smartplaylist editor but give me a "Advanced" button. Just some simple syntax like VB/SQL giving me some conditional statements like AND/OR/IF and Brackets.
- czechman86, on 11/02/2007, -2/+3not news, not important, buried.
- timfitz99, on 11/02/2007, -1/+2So will they finally fix the library consolidation feature (long filenames kill it) and make it stop losing my song ratings?
- momsshizzle, on 11/03/2007, -2/+1Buried. Why not post an article when iTunes reaches 7.5 (build 12309847120398472013964098217309487.12394870213984.13098740912384.1) Oh Linsux also.
- michaelGregoire, on 11/02/2007, -1/+2This update had better fix the constant freezing when dealing with large libraries, such as those found on a 160gb iPod Classic.
- WAPCE, on 11/02/2007, -2/+1Will it support the 3G iPhone?
- meepzork, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1Ever since i updated to leopard, my itunes screensaver has a red tint to it (all the artwork is tinted red) when im connected to my external display. Everything worked perfect on Tiger. I hope they fix this.
- tomis, on 11/02/2007, -1/+4People "drop" acid, they don't "drop" new software release.
- BrandNewJesus, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1OLDAPPS.COM!!! After the last itunes update took away my ability to easily open my ipod folder, without syncing to the computers library, I decided to go all the way back to 6.5 or whatever version was before all of the garbage i don't need on the iphone came out and made it slower than hell!
- ahawks, on 11/02/2007, -0/+4I am so tired of all these itunes updates. 99% of iTunes users are not on the bleeding edge of hardware and these changes are irrelevant to us. Seems like every 2 weeks, iTunes is asking me if I want to go download the latest version.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3And in other news, Apple will be dropping iTunes 7.501, 7.502, 7.502b, 7.503, and 7.504 sometime next week as well. 8 updates to Quicktime will also be included.
- thedinomeister, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1FINALLY!!! iTunes runs terribly on Vista and uses around 300 to 500MB of ram depending on what I'm doing. I need to use iTunes because the music I have only plays on iTunes which sucks.
did I mention how annoying it is when they update iTunes every 2 weeks. Is it really that bad?!!?? Also, why are the updates 45MBs???- FredFredrickson, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Every 2 weeks? It's more like every 2 days around ":update time." And the updates are huge because they all include Quicktime... the format that refuses to die.
- thedinomeister, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1hahaahaha!
- Monk22, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1if quicktime and realmedia are still being used what hope is there for humanity
- FredFredrickson, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Every 2 weeks? It's more like every 2 days around ":update time." And the updates are huge because they all include Quicktime... the format that refuses to die.
