Yeah sure the OS X kernel (Mach) is BSD based and the UI (Darwin) is decended from an open source project but there is no way Apple will truly embrace OSS. They will make grand public statements that will make their fanboys happy and get headlines but when it really comes down to it they are as anti-OSS as Microsoft. Freedom and openness are not Apples way.
They would rather squeeze every red cent out of it's giddy fanboy customer base and lock out any developers that might pose a competitive threat. (For example read the iPhone SDK License agreement for examples of the types of applications and activities they forbid).
This story will most likely confuse or anger many Diggers who are generally pro-OSS and pro-Apple and won't be reconcile this situation in their minds.
