Dream Up a Killer App for Macs in "My Dream App" Contest
macworld.com — Phill Ryu on Monday announced My Dream App, a new competition that invites contestants to submit their best ideas for a “killer app” for Mac OS X. Contestants can earn prizes including Macs and iPods, and will have their ideas judged by industry luminaries including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.
- 1230 diggs
- digg it
- shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17An excellent idea! I don't have an idea, but it's going to be so cool to vote and choose the best ideas.
- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -17/+8I actually do have an idea. Just came to me. Off to do the write up and submit it! :D
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -27/+10Sure to get dugg down, "Apple has already implemented my killer app. It's called Boot Camp!"
- roadies, on 10/12/2007, -25/+6http://digg.com/apple/My_Dream_App_launches_American_Idol_for_Software_Development
- PixelCloud, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16software companies are getting lazy
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26This is a bad idea its totally closed and benefits only the developers and marginally reimbuses a handful of people.
DIGG should do the SAME contest, OPEN SOURCE CROSS PLATFORM, ALL ideas are posted on the site and DUGG by the digg community to choose the best one. Reward is recognition. No one owns rights to any of the ideas. - retral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Really? It sounds like a company trying to cash in on someone's brilliant idea to me.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree with brundlefly. Kevin: Are you listening?

- notfred, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24bravo, why the hell do people link to articles that cotnribute nothing to the original? The only thing that can happen is you get LESS correct information the further away from the source you get.
Didn't anybody play "broken telephone"? - blizzwatch, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9Allow me to give you a refresher in sources.
A primary source is a direct reference to what is being reported, so if I'm reporting a story about you for instance a direct quote from you would be a primary source.
A secondary source would be if an expert in the field of whatever I'm writing about authored a book about it and I took some information from it.
This article links to a secondary source.
The link your referring to as "far away from the source" is the actual website the story is reporting on, thus a primary source.
Did you even look at it or are you just angry at the world today? - keeperofkeys, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It did read a bit like notfred was deploring remiprev's post, but actually s/he was applauding it. A non-ironic "bravo". Whatever next?
- notfred, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Uh, no, I'm complaining that I'd rather see a link to the mydreamapp web site than a link to a useless macworld article about the web site, that adds nothing new.
(sorry, this is in response to blizzwatch. I applaud and, sigh, "digg" remiprev.) - rparle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Way to comprehend, blizzwatch. He was complaining about the originally submitted link being further removed than the one in the comment.
Edit: Beaten to it.
- notfred, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24bravo, why the hell do people link to articles that cotnribute nothing to the original? The only thing that can happen is you get LESS correct information the further away from the source you get.

- n8dawg87, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20For only 18 Phill is REALLY sharp! Being able to orchestrate something like this is amazing for his age! Can't wait to see what he does later on in life as well. Props to you Phill.
- plarp, on 10/12/2007, -26/+21yes he's orchestrated a cheap way to steal others million dollars ideas unknowingly..
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Maybe when he's older, he can get people to think up some (sorely needed) killer apps for Linux.
- plarp, on 10/12/2007, -22/+17phils friends undugg me for tellin the truth
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@plarp - I wouldn't doubt that. You are the only person who's made a valid point thus far and we can't have any of that.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Phil is quite smart. He has shown that he is adept at drawing media hype by getting Kevin Rose, Steve Wozniak, etc to judge his contest. More more importantly, he has built an organizational infrastructure (in this case, a contest) that allows him to sit back while other people do the heavy lifting (thinking up ideas, judging and developing them, etc). This is one of the tried and true paths to success. But let's not kid ourselves about the terms. If you win this contest, you better hope your idea isn't good enough to merit a Windows or Linux version, because you won't get a penny in royalties from the other 95% of the desktop market:
"THE ONLY ROYALTIES WINNERS ARE ENTITLED TO ARE FIFTEEN (15) PERCENT OF THE NET INCOME OF THE APPLE MACINTOSH-COMPATIBLE VERSION OF THE PRODUCT THAT MDA DEVELOPS BASED UPON THE WINNERS’ ENTRY SUBMISSIONS."
http://mydreamapp.com/about/rules/ - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I can run Windows and Linux on my APPLE-MACINTOSH, so that'll be a nice 15% royalties for every version they make. In the age of Boot Camp, they need to be specific or they'll end up in court.
- n8dawg87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm just saying its nice to see an 18 year old in the spotlight being an entrepreneur rather than just doing nothing through college and ending up with a degree. Not saying that he is in the right on this or that the royalties are fair.
When you look at it all they are really doing they are aiming at people who would never have the time or money to develop their own app. Of course it is waaay better for people to develop their ideas themselves, they are just helping out lazy and poor people.
- 9tailfox, on 10/12/2007, -29/+7Killer App for Macs is Windows
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Then why have a Mac?
- AlbinoRaven, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0Apple Mac (shee-t-ee krapp)
n.
1. A device that is overpriced, half powered with a buggy version of FreeBSD supported by buffoons still trying to figure out a commandline with a one button mouse;
2. A device used a moron that enjoys buying entirely new computer systems anytime a new OS comes out and in some cases OS updates (see OS7 to OS7.5) thus continuing to provide landfills with something to cover the Older Apple Lisa;
3. A clever marketing device disguised as a computer that scales* to the customer requirements as time progresses, (*if the term scalible was redefined to mean buying a new mouse, monitor or keyboard for too much cash.)
- KevinJ, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Why can't it be the most killer MULTIPLATFORM app, that would be cooler, and not leave me out of the loop(STUPID PC!!!!)

"THE ONLY ROYALTIES WINNERS ARE ENTITLED TO ARE FIFTEEN (15) PERCENT OF THE NET INCOME OF THE APPLE MACINTOSH-COMPATIBLE VERSION OF THE PRODUCT THAT MDA DEVELOPS BASED UPON THE WINNERS’ ENTRY SUBMISSIONS"
Brilliant idea, have other people come up with unique ideas for making you rich. Why didn't I think of that? /sarcasm- cblalock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Its better than what you get working for a Fortune 500 company. Anything you develop while in the employ of IBM, Cisco, Lenovo, Sun, etc is the property of that company. You get your salary and a pat on the back, but no royalties.
- mem2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8yes but u have a job, and ~50'000 a year salary.
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -1/+815% for doing nothing more than having an idea doesn't sound that bad. You don't have to go through hell in back with developing the application and squashing ever elusive bugs.
- Slayback, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10@ Those saying he's trying to "steal" ideas.
At first, it sort of rubs me the wrong way that he's soliciting ideas, but I also see it as sort of an American Idol type model.
Here are two outcomes:
1) A person gets their app promoted through this campaign and their shareware app sells more than any other shareware app ever. Sure, Phill may take a cut, but they've also produced a better app than they could have on their own and they've received much more publicity. They'll probably make more money than they would have on their own.
2) Someone doesn't make the cut, but through the process, they polished and solidified their ideas, and they go on to make their application on their own. They received the motivation to start something they may not have otherwise.
It's really a win-win. It'll get more apps coming to the Mac regardless of whether or not they're all "winners".- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I would agree with your post except the part "Sure, Phil may take a cut.."
That should read "Sure, Phil may take an 85% cut..."
The winners would be better offhsoring the development of their app and keeping both the intellectual property as well as more than just 15% of revenue. - Slayback, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12@mobilehavoc:
Sorry, but no. Have you ever worked with off-shore workers? BEST case scenario, you get work that is average.
Have you looked at the list of people that are going to be providing feedback and working on this project? You think there is any way in the world you'd get Woz to give you feedback on your own and you could then have a successful project doing the management yourself with off-shore workers?
This kid did some excellent networking and is creating a good opportunity for a handful of people. You're just pissed you didn't think of the idea.
P.S. As am I... ;) - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@slayback.
I'm not pissed. I'm happy with my job - although it's surprising to admit it.
Yes I am very familiar with offshoring - both the advantages and disadvantages as well as costs. There are thousands of successful applications that never have the input of Wozniak or Rose or any of the people they have.
For example, look at Parallels, they are based out of Russia (which people don't know is perhaps even bigger in development offshoring these days) and their product has rave reviews from users and even Apple is promoting it.
What I disagree with you on is the notion that someone can't do this alone - if people had that attitude, we'd all be running the same 3 apps and there wouldn't be as much freeware, opensource or shareware as there is.
BTW, don't knock the quality of offshoring - you'd be shocked how many mission-critical apps are developed outside this country nowadays. - Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He's not "stealing" anyone's ideas, but he's certainly buying them at an incredibly cheap price.
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Phill definitely won't see all of that money. He needs to pay for hosting, a web designer, three programmers, 6 iPods, 3 Mac Minis, and 3 MacBooks. A website that gets tons of traffic is not cheap to pay hosting for.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I would agree with your post except the part "Sure, Phil may take a cut.."
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5And intel photoshop :)
- notfred, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4.. .and who owns the _idea_ for the "killer app"? Not the submitter, is my guess. Any agreement on royalties? Not mentioned. Finding the "next killer app" is the hard part, and all you get is a MB?
Didn't feel like registering to read the rules to find out.- Slayback, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Don't have to register to read the rules: http://mydreamapp.com/about/rules/
- notfred, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Thanks, they seem to be just about what I guessed - 0 on non-mac platforms, 15% on mac platforms. And a lawsuit brewing if a product takes off and an upgrade happens in a year or two - that's not explicitly covered by the contract.
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"Finding the "next killer app" is the hard part, and all you get is a MB?"
Great products are 10% ideas, 90% execution of those ideas.
- mem2, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Hey its the "Let Apple steal your idea" gameshow.
Contestant #1: I'll take virtual memory management for $200 al. - mGee, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Hey kids, submit your grooviest app ideas so that a few uncreative developers can get rich with them.
- digitallysick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5An app that would let me use the ipod on a mac without itunes, and let me manage, rename, etc straight off the ipod, (i want the ipod to work as another drive but still play the mp3z) that would be nice....
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9http://mydreamapp.com/about/rules/
I don't know what the "going rate" for an application designer is in terms of royalties (it probably varies quite a lot) but the winners of this contest are promised 15% of sales revenue. Does that seem low to anyone?
Also, it states that winners are entitled only to the royalties from the Macintosh version - if one of the people on the panel decides the idea is good enough for Windows then not only do they own the rights to create it for Windows but they also get to keep 100% of the profits.
Furthermore the rules also state that if your idea wins (and is therefore duty bound to be developed into an application) and then MDA is sued for anything (another company claims that it is their idea etc, patent infringement blah) then it is not MDA that is liable but the person who submitted the idea! Don't worry though, the rules also state that they'll give you up to $100 to fight those nasty lawyers off.
I know this post is going to get modded down, that's the nature of the Apple category here on digg. Phill Ryu will probably come here and claim I "stalk" him. All I'm saying is that people REALLY should read the rules before they submit anything to this thing and make sure it is their best option to give them their ideas.- johnred, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Phill-stalker! ;)
- mem2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2LOL, they give u $100 to fight off the laywers.
Apple (its a huggable microsoft). - Chairboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It's not for everyone, but think about this:
It's 15% of something instead of 100% of nothing. If you don't have the ability to code, lack a team of designers, QA, and so on, then your great idea won't go anywhere. This is clearly aimed at folks who have an idea but don't know what to do with it.
If you have the capability to put together a team and make your project go on your own, then go for it!
This is not a one size fits all solution, few things in life are. - embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Haha I just noticed that. I looked at Neils history - he is a Phill stocker - or fanboy wanting Phill's attention. Good find!
- notfred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good point, I missed the liability clause.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Stalker would be a good name for you, however, you do have SOME valid points.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Macintosh is not an OS, it is a hardware platform. I can run Windows and Linux on my Macintosh these days, so they'd better have good lawyers, because I'd want 15% of any version they make, since it runs on my Macintosh.
- akatsuki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree that the 15% royalty and giving up your intellectual property for any further developments or cross-over apps is pretty crappy. This is a raw deal for anyone with a truly good idea. So I contributed a couple of ideas that I want personally to exist, but I don't think are really worth massive amounts of income or money. If I had a great idea, there is no way in hell I would submit it to this competition.
I probably won't really bother with the contest nor with all the hype. I have enjoyed Phill's blog for a while, and Menuet is a great app, but this makes me think that he is not a very fair guy.... - slantyyz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hmm, 15% of the revenue is worth 100% of the liability risk?
Sounds fair to me!
- mGee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7BTW... my "killer app" idea(s) remains with me and I'm going to develop it(them).
- Kericr, on 10/12/2007, -20/+16My idea for a killer app is an App that stops the majority of Mac users from acting like eliteist asshats.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3That. was awesome. :)
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Dupe post. Digg down.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8As a Mac user I thank you, some of us are elitist assholes but not all of us.
- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3you should seriously submit that...
(I'm a mac user... but i just think it'd be funny as they're reading the submissions) - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"My idea for a killer app is an App that stops the majority of Mac users from acting like eliteist asshats."
And my idea for a killer app is something that automatically blocks bitter haters who have nothing better to do than troll Apple diggs and make obnoxious remarks. - Twango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Arguing over what platform you're using is about as grade-school as it gets.
- ceris, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Did you even check to see if this was a dupe?
I've got an idea for another contest..
"How many times can the same story make it to a frontpage" - illegalamigo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2DUPE DUPE NO DIGG
- Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7This is the dumbest contest, ever. Anyone smart enough to enter is really just stupid enough to know ideas are worth more than free Macs and iPods and a 15% share in a 2% computer platform.. You can bet your ass it'll get ported over to Windows and Linux.
I give this story -1000 diggs.- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3except that you only get one vote :)
- slantyyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know, even if it got ported to Windows and Linux it would probably be less profitable. A lot of Windows users don't like to pay for software, and Linux users prefer OSS/FSS.
On the other hand, Mac users are generally more inclined to pay for shareware.
While that patent liability segment of the contract is TOTALLY LAME (because of that clause, I'm not sure I would want to enter), it is better to get a Macbook and 15% of miniscule profits than to sit on a idea that you'll never execute and therefore get no financial rewards.
- jagg, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2How about something that filters all mac cult / fanboy *****?
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1 Uh oh. I think the Apple fanatics just stumbled across these comments. The mod-down has commenced.
- battleroyalex, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2An app that deletes every remain of those stupid mac commercials so I never have to see them again.
- smeg0rz, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Hey guys, awesome site keep up the great work, just thought i'd spread the news about a UK technology blog, because it's not often enough i see UK based ones, here's the addy anyway, all you guys should check it out, i've just subscribed, has awesome updates etc.. Bad ass.
http://www.philipaustin.co.uk - camg188, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The "killer app" is a myth. An application that is so "must have" that I would purchase a Mac just so I could run it? It just won't happen. Some original killer game would have the best chance of filling that role, and I don't see that happening on a Mac.
- slantyyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bought my Mac primarily to use iLife. I'm sure that I can't be the only one.
- 9tailfox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The Dream Up a Killer App for Macs is a New USB Vibrating ***** Ring when viewing Porn.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Well, as an uncreative programmer, I see this as a great idea. Now I can go through a huge list of program ideas, until I find one that I like, and I can make it for Windows. It's like an idea database.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2is paula abdul gonna bang one of the contestants, we need more motivation.
- BrowncoatJedi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The Dream Up a Killer App is, of course, 3D virtual sex with Scarlett Johansson.
- beaverpants, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1 a good app would be run WoW
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How about an easy to use digital movie editor (like iMovie) with more than one video track? I realize that you have that option with FCE or FCP, but the cost can be prohibitive for those just wanting to do simple editing. Not to mention that the interface can be daunting to a newbie.
Back in the OS 8/9 days, I used to use Strata's VideoShop which had many of the easy to use features of iMovie, but allowed for multiple video tracks. Sure it was occasionally a buggy crashprone POS, but what software WASN'T back in those days.
I wrote to the iMovie plug-in wunderkinds over at GeeThree asking for something like this, but I don't think they want to step on Apple's toes. I think a consumer movie editor with multiple tracks would sell pretty well. I'd buy it, and i already have iMovie and FCE.- DShafik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2/me submits idea and keeps your 15%
Might be a good idea to actually ENTER, rather than give your ideas away to all those evil people we know are patrolling Digg for just such a thing!
- Davey - JohnnyAstro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you are looking for a video editing app that allows you more then one video track, and is actually free, try Hyperengine-AV, available at www.arboretum.com. It's pretty interesting.
- slantyyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It already exists. It's one of GeeThree's slick tools. It's an iMovie plugin that's in one of their toolsets.
- DShafik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2/me submits idea and keeps your 15%
- Schwa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wow, such hate.
Have you considered that there are a LOT of people out there with good ideas for an app but NO technical ability/resources to get it done? A great idea for an app you will never develop is worth NOTHING.
All the commenters who complain that this is a rook deal need to understand how business works. Ideas are rarely worth anything- it's those with capital (startup dollars, or in this case, development dollars) who make the money. - Kale, on 10/12/2007, -5/+51. Get software ideas.

talk about a dream app :)- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2That app is called....Windows.
- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2or darwine (ie when its theoretically finished).

- steamedlice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Uh, oh... "Winners will receive royalties equal to 15 percent of the net income of the application after it goes on sale."
It's better to receive a lower royalty on gross sales, not net income. I'd take 5-10% gross sales anyday over net. - btipling, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I am so tired of this 'my dream ap' ***** on digg. It's like on here everyday. I think someone has multiple accounts...marked as spam.
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I anticipate a very interesting couple of weeks ahead for 'MyDreamApp'. Props to Phil - the sheer amount of man hours required to put this together is pretty amazing alone. Not to mention The Woz is in.
Interesting system nonetheless - 500 word proposals - 24 finalists - 3 winners. 15% royalties and MacBooks. Not the greatest incentive - but seeing an idea come to fruition might be worth it - Twango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Keep in mind that you can't patent an idea. You can only patent a realization of an idea.
So if you're giving up ideas, you can't collect a cent. If you really have an idea for a "killer app" ... maybe you should go to work on it. If you don't know how, work with someone who does.
An idea -could- be worth $billions. Don't get robbed. Some bigshot will judge it? And then run (away) with it? - jpeicott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Everyone complaing about the winner's idea being "stolen."
First rule of busniess is ideas-don't-mean-*****. Everyone has good ideas. Everyone has lots of good ideas. Doing something with your ideas is the hard part.
I work in the entertainment industry, and this reminds me of how everyone thinks they could be a great screenwriter. They have a terrific "idea for a movie." What they don't understand is that clever ideas are a dime a dozen; one good idea does not a movie make. Sitting down and crafting 90-minutes of good dialog, pacing, etc. is where the skill comes in; THAT's why professional screenwriters are getting paid the big bucks while you're sittin' on your couch imagining what great a Zelda movie you could make...
Whoever wins this contest, especially if the person isn't a programmer himself, loses absolutely nothing by submitting his idea because ideas ain't *****. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"/me submits idea and keeps your 15%
Might be a good idea to actually ENTER, rather than give your ideas away to all those evil people we know are patrolling Digg for just such a thing!"
I hardly think this is a new idea. An easy to use multi-track digital video editor would be great for simple projects. I don't need credit and chances are I wouldn't make any money. I just want the software to exist so I can use it. There are ways to make iMovie do something like this, even with it's sigle video track, but it's not intuitive and not always accurate. What you need to do is record your audio from what ever your best source is and lay that down on one of the audio tracks with it's accompanying video. Strip the audio out of your secondary sources, then cut and paste the scenes into the video track. It works in a fashion, but you have to look for distinquishing movements to know exactly where to paste it in. Not at all elegant.

I've looked at Hyperengine, wasn't quite what I felt was the best solution. MovieWorks is another that showed great promise, only to fail the Staples test (That was easy). iMovie really is one of the easiest to use, powerful video editors available for the Mac, just misses that next step for those that want just a little more. I'll keep hoping, but since Apple uses iMovie (and iLife) to showcase what the Mac can do, I doubt they'll change it much. Especially if it would cut into FCE/FCP sales - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The dream app of the 21st century is email with no spam.
- dalesmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well, I don't know why people are so uptight about this. just because someone can come up with a cool idea, doesn't mean they ever would have gotten around to implementing it. Also, when people get venture capital money, they often lose all control of the product and retain only a marginal percentage, this doesn't seem to different to that IMHO. I for one think it's a cool idea, more power to them.
- JonnyQuiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No, no, no. It's 15% net, not 15% gross. That means you get 15% of any "profit" not 15% of the total sales revenue. Here's an example.
15% gross of $1million sales equals $150,000. Nice.
15% net of $1million sales equals 0.15x($1million – “the costs”)
You have no say what “the costs” are.
For example:- Developers’ time ($60,000), server rental ($35,000), web-hosting & bandwidth ($25,000), marketing ($75,000), 85 foot yacht in Aruba ($804,999).
15% net of $1million sales equals 15 cents. Not so nice.
I don’t think the judges have thought it through. Smeger’s post yesterday thought it was 15% of sales (implying gross). Guys, have a good hard look at whether you want to be involved with this project. I think it’s a really bad idea. - Merrick015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well its great for people who have good ideas but no talent in sw development or too lazy/retarded to obtain IP rights.. 15% of x for not following thru seems reasonable. 85% of x for taking someone's idea and making x of it seems the same. eh whatever..
