Dude, iPhone 2.0 software is buggin' the hell out.
appleinsider.com — While iPhone 3G itself is hard to buy, those who do own the new handset are reporting a number of common problems that range from crash-prone third-party apps to lag, Bluetooth, and GPS.

- PerennialTears, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Sorry guys/girls for that one.
- finkx, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Haha I'm intrigued what you meant by that? : )
- PerennialTears, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2OFF! spray for all the bugs. Yeah that was lame.
- finkx, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Lame jokes rule - don't stress the flex : )
- Sethwm2, on 07/19/2008, -3/+169Thank you!! I thought I was just going crazy!! I was looking on google to see if anyone was having lag and I could not find anything. I have issues with SMS typing REALLY SLOW, sometimes apps refuse to open or just crash, the wireless is really picky, and contacts and the overall speed of the phone has gone down hill... I would agree with a memory leak somewhere. The issues come and go. Also... I don't know if anyone else noticed occasional kernel panics and reboots...
- energyblue, on 07/19/2008, -0/+35Two reboots today alone.
- CobaltBlue, on 07/20/2008, -14/+56It's apple, so those aren't problems, those are just better ways to do things.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/20/2008, -2/+12No, it's apple, and they ***** it up. Simple.
They ***** things up all the time and don't fix them, my aluminum keyboard still doesn't work before an OS boots, and thats almost a year old keyboard and they've known about it for about that long. - MalDON, on 07/20/2008, -18/+3I thought that was microsoft?
- krypton70, on 07/20/2008, -7/+5get over yourself
- mrsteveman1, on 07/20/2008, -2/+12No, it's apple, and they ***** it up. Simple.
- Gimpyfuzznut, on 07/20/2008, -0/+15I have the same problem with SMS messaging lagging big time. I can't seem to replicate the problem as it seems to happen randomly. I think clearing out message history helps a little bit. Contacts also load up pretty slow.
- Kazaki, on 07/20/2008, -0/+19This is true. I was working on someone else's iPhone earlier on with 1.0.2, and the whole thing was moving like a dream. It was as smooth as the commercials, and after using 2.0 for so long it actually came as a surprise.
Which is depressing. I find myself tapping on contacts in my iPhone like 5 times before it registers now.- moniker, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8Yes, thank you. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Whenever I pull up my Contacts it takes forever for the app to recognize my scrolling or tapping gestures. It basically just freezes for five seconds before I can interact with the app at all. Very frustrating.
- krypton70, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7contacts are especially laggy
- sovietninja, on 07/20/2008, -7/+31Try running it in Safe Mode? Maybe you got spyware... /Geek Squad
- deroderugridder, on 07/20/2008, -2/+6I have the same problems all of you in this thread describe.
Do Apple fanboys sing ' You never walk alone' as well ?- jakem1, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3No. They just hum it quietly to themselves.
- iericg, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8The 3G is the first iphone I've owned so I can't compare with the previous one.
I'm also having the same problems mentioned on this thread. The one that bugs me the most the accessing my contacts.
It's kind of sad but I found access my contact list much faster with the Google App than actually opening up "Contacts" - slundal, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2I have serious problems with the wireless, it rarely gets an IP when i try to connect it to a WiFi network. Most often it assigns it self an IP which of course doesn't work. A complete reset of the phone sometimes helps, but that's not an option unless you have your computer with you, which kind of defeats the entire purpose of the iPhone
- hardeep1singh, on 07/20/2008, -2/+7Welcome to Smartphone world guys, your iphone is behaving just the way the Symbian 6 used to behave years ago, maybe Symbian 6 was better. It would take years for Apple to catch up with Symbian 9.

- scarwars, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1i love my UIQ
- hotsoda, on 07/20/2008, -1/+9The only problems I have with the phone is the tremendously long backup times (which iTunes insists on performing EVERY time you connect the phone), and the contact app taking a long time to load.
It sounds like the problems are widespread, but completely random, so a memory leak is likely the case. - TehDoctor, on 07/20/2008, -4/+15Ok, I'm sick of people shouting "memory leak" every time something runs slow. If you are not in Computer Science then shut up. Firefox did hot have a grave memory leak. It suffered from fragmentation and an overzealous and stupid cache. The iPhone does not have a memory leak. Every time you close an application, its memory is deallocated by the system. Maybe there are leaks while running an app, but it would be no different if the application needed all that memory until it quit. And as soon as you hit the home button, the leaks are over with, as no apps are allowed to run in the background.
The real issue here is clockspeed and perhaps a cramped amount of RAM (it has 128MB, IIRC). If anyone ran a lot of apps before now through the jailbreak, they could tell you it made the thing slow. No *****. Even Apple knew the machine would run slower when they passed out the 1.1.* updates. The iPhones have an ARM processor that's underclocked from ~650MHz to ~400MHz to save battery life, and some of Apple's updates have raised the clock speed a few Hz to offset the performance penalty of *doing* more.
I can't say anything about wifi or connection lag, but as far as things running slow, well, the moment you add shoddy coders and million stupid applications like the oh-so-awesome "Super Monkey Balls," written by moronic coders who are used to having Java clean up after them and you're going to have apps that run like garbage.- jakem1, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4Good post but garbage collection is hardly a new concept. Perhaps Apple could have included that on the iPhone.
It looks like there could be problems with the platform if 3rd-party apps can effect its stability but users on other forums are also reporting stability problems with the built-in apps like Safari.
Maybe Apple should have waited for the initial 2 year contract period to expire before releasing an update rather than rushing out a buggy version of the iPhone. - Gimpyfuzznut, on 07/20/2008, -2/+6Seriously, stop trying to be smart and read what the ***** people are posting. We aren't talking about third party apps breaking down, the SMS and Contacts application from Apple themselves are *****. What the ***** is so complicated about that?
- PosedMagnet, on 07/20/2008, -6/+3Uh, Firefox did too have a memory leak.
If you open an app and don't use it, then check back 20 minutes later to find it's eating 200MB ram more than when you started it, that's called a memory leak.
And Firefox did exactly that. - TehDoctor, on 07/20/2008, -3/+3@jakem1
Not putting garbage collection on the phone was an informed choice by Apple. On a cramped environment like that, you don't want GC to kick in during a call and ***** your performance. I'm not saying GC shouldn't have been included as an option, although I think ref counted pointers would have been a better solution
@Gimpyfuzznut
How about you actually consider my post, jackass? I said the likelyhood of a memory leak is low, and wouldn't be a problem. Loss of some RAM is not going to ruin the overall performance. Swapping would happen, but if a process were actually causing a big problem (thrashing), the VM system would bitch slap it out of RAM. Then I said the performance problem was likely due to an underclocked CPU, which would hit both 3rd party *and* Apple's apps. The support Apple probably had to add to the springboard and any other daemons probably hogs the CPU. I could make a better guess, but I don't have the 2.0 software yet. - TehDoctor, on 07/20/2008, -2/+5@PosedMagnet
No, no it's not. A memory leak is when a program allocates memory and then leaves it hanging around without being able to use it. This can be after a function call or at exit. If you actually knew what the ***** you were talking about, you would know this.
Firefox had small memory leaks, yes. Just about every piece of software does. Firefox's problem (if you read the developer's blogs, sorry but I don't have a link. Google it) is that it had a lot of fragmentation in the old allocator and that it stored uncompressed images and had bad cache behavior.
Good job showing everyone how uninformed you are. - jakem1, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3@TehDoctor: Windows Mobile manages to include GC without it effecting the quality of calls so it's entirely possible for the iPhone to do the same - especially since they both run on similar hardware.
- PosedMagnet, on 07/21/2008, -4/+0TehDoctor, good job in showing everyone what a pretentious douchebag you are.
How is what I explained not a memory leak? Unauthorized executed code sucking up memory is the same ***** thing.
Idiot. - TehDoctor, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3@jakem1
I'm not disagreeing with you. GC could easily be put on the phone, but Apple's reason for not doing it was performance. I'm not a fan of garbage collection (I actually kind of hate it), but it *is* a lame reason. Lots of people like GC, and why shouldn't they be able to get it? GC done right is not a huge performance hit if you're writing a non-critical application.
@PosedMagnet (I know I shouldn't feed the trolls, but what the hell?)
If I'm a pretentious douchebag for knowing a ***** memory leak is, then so be it. You are a ***** layman who obviously knows *nothing* of computer science, and keeps showing it with every post. Using memory is *not* a leak. A leak is when heap memory has been allocated and all references to it become inaccessible without the memory being returned to the system. Sure, I can write an app that puts everything on the heap and holds it until the end of the program. That is stupid, and it's what Java does. But it is NOT a leak (if it's freed near/at exit). Christ, read a ***** CS book or something. Or at least the Wikipedia.
Now, as far as firefox is concerned, I don't know what you mean about "unauthorized code." (you ran the browser, didn't you?) I'll say it one more time, in the hopes it will get through your cro-magnonly thick skull: Firefox's problem was NOT MEMORY LEAKS. Yes, leaks were cleaned up, but they were *not* critical leaks. Firefox's true memory problems were caused by memory *fragmentation* and by storing uncompressed images in RAM even though the pages were not being viewed, as well as a cache that was poorly tuned.
Just admit you don't know what the hell you're talking about instead of making yourself look like a moron some more, will you? - robbob, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2@ all -- Take it outside

No one said anything about Vista being great or not buggy. You know just because someone states something negative about Apple doesn't automatically mean he's a Microsoft fanboy. A lot of us aren't biased and couldn't care less about what brand a product is.
Fag/nboy wars are stupid and lead to nothing. - sovietninja, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Wow if you follow my comments you would realize I am ***** around with the Apple fanbois. I hate vista, but since SP1 its actually been able to run more games. But it was really expensive to get the ultimate edition when it first came out...
Just because someone compares Apple's current woes to Microsoft's, doesn't mean they are a Apple fanboy, the only Apple product I own is an green iPod mini. You the one jumping to conclusions. If you look a few comments ahead, you have seen my, you mean SP1 right? joke and realized I am making fun of the iPhone software nomenclature. The Apple fanbois always say that service packs are what should have been in the product to begin with, whilst they promote their .1 updates as added features, when one could argue a .1 software update = service pack.
But whatever. The peanut butter jelly sammich never needs an .1 updates or service packs. Maybe a glass of milk though. - TheFinaleofSeem, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1So x.0 launches don't have unforseen issues, especially one with a ***** colossal launch?
- bsonline, on 07/20/2008, -2/+13I'm a little confused by your comment, let me try to clarify...
The official apps that were developed and tested for the last 6 months are designed for the phone released 1 year ago, when no 3rd party apps were going to be created? 1.0...?
My toolchain apps worked really well on 1.1.4. I do, however, find the app store speed to be a bit better. But you are telling me that nothing at all would could ever be good on 2.0, because the platform is immature?
I'm going to go ahead and catch my own error. You meant the programs are the first edition of each, the developers just aren't ready. That is what you meant by 1.0 programs. So, to you, 1.0 is really beta?
But when apple updates to 2.1. or 2.2, and the developers update their apps, everything will be better? I'm guessing you haven't heard that many devs are ready to walk because of the sheer lack of communication from Apple.
I _still_ love my 1st gen iphone on 2.0. But it wears me thin hearing "Oh, wait for Apple to update." Apple dropped the ball and that's that. It happens. I just hope their current trend doesn't continue, because it really is starting to look like they can't handle their own market.- sovietninja, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6Try, running them in Windows 95 compatibility mode or in DOSBOX. That usually works for my old Wing Commander games.
- bjornski, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Actually, Wing Commander with that tilt controller could be kinda rad.
Tho I'd want my buttons. - sovietninja, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4@Bjornski
How would you play it though? Maybe Wing Commander Arena would work but that's not really a WC game lol.
- essjay, on 07/20/2008, -7/+1I think one of the most important statements in the article is that users aren't reporting any of the problems (crashing, not launching etc) with Apple's apps. As soon as Apple opened up the platform to developers, they were asking for trouble. It's the difference between a multi billion dollar company with endless resources and some guy developing apps in his basement. No time to properly test and no time to properly fix issues. I just wish Apple did what they said they were going to do, and actually vet the apps so the bad ones don't get through.
- bpoteat, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3"It's the difference between a multi billion dollar company with endless resources and some guy developing apps in his basement. No time to properly test and no time to properly fix issues."
You don't know what you're talking about. Linux kicks the crap out of...Wait, what are we talking about? - nogami, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I don't particularly care if 3rd party apps crash, etc. (at least as far as the free ones go). If the paid apps crash (and none of mine have - yet), I'd be a bit more upset, but not that big a deal if it's just a matter of restarting it.
The only issue I have is with a 3rd party app being able to take down the phone. It's only happened to me once, but it completely rebooted the phone. And that should never happen. - jakem1, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3People are reporting problems with the built-in apps. Have a look at this for a good discussion about these problems:

- jabberwolf, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Here is an idea - why not buy it WHEN it actually works?
I’m guessing most iPhone users are first time smartphone users. For those of us that have been using 3G smartphones for a few years, we see a big lack of features that can be found on other phones.
The three biggest problems with the iPhone for experienced smartphone users are:
1. No tethering to laptop. Nope, you won’t be able to share that fast 3G connection with a laptop or other devices even though you are paying for unlimited data. Better hope you can find some WiFi.
2. Poor implementation of Push Email. There’s no way my IT department is going to replace any of our BlackBerry’s with iPhones. Things the iPhone can’t do but other phones can do:
* Only the inbox can be set to synchronize – subfolders can be accessed but no synchronization policy can be set
* No Flagging on email
* Cannot set Out of Office message
* No Hot Keys for managing messages
* Difficult to get to Global Address List
* No support for Activesync Schedule (eg. push during work hrs – pull outside of that)
* No Smart Filtering
* No ability to change sort order of email messages
* No support for Server Search of email messages
* Trying to delete messages or move them when you don’t have connectivity generates lots of errors messages and you cannot actually delete or move when offline
* Message status is not set on the server for replying/forwarding to an email, similarly the status from the server is not provided to the iPhone
* You cannot automatically set attachments to download
* There is no control over maximum attachment size
* You can’t see the number of unread or new emails without unlocking the device
* No ability to invite attendees to a meeting
* You cannot provide a reason for declining meetings
* Attendee status is not available
* There is no click through to get access to information from the GAL for a participant
* No support for setting Out of Office message
* You cannot delete a single occurrence of a recurring meeting – you can only delete the whole series
* Cannot enforce Storage or device encryption
* Remote wipe doesn’t seem to be immediate and restore requires recradling to iTunes
* PIN unlock timeout is not enforced on the iPhone
* You have to ‘slide’ to unlock – then enter the PIN code to unlock the device
Granted, a lot of these are advanced features. However, why make a big deal about Push Email if you aren’t going to make it a better Push Email experience? After all, with Safari you can check your webmail and get a lot of those features.
3. Battery life. Smartphone users know that manufacturers have faced class-action lawsuits over battery life. Most manufacturers offer jumbo-sized batteries as a cheap alternative to get out of the lawsuit. This larger battery usually adds bulks to the form factor of the device.
1st gen iPhone users forced Apple to hand out coupons and refunds after Apple slashed the price of the iPhone shortly after release. You can bet that iPhone Nation is going to be unhappy with the iPhone 3G battery life…especially after they’ve gotten 6-8 months of charges on the device.
Those of the 3 basic reasons experienced smartphone users won’t like the 3G iPhone not to mention:
* No video recording
* No focus on the camera
* No light on the camera
* No zoom on the camera
* No recording of audio on the device
* No physical keyboard
* AT&T exclusivity
* No Cut and Paste
* No Stereo bluetooth
* Can you send MMS yet?
However this phone does have several things that make it accessible to the mass public:
* easy to use user interface
* large 3.5? widescreen
* solid media playback and storage- TheFinaleofSeem, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1A lot of those are "...yet" items. And camera issues...well, I sure as hell don't expect a cellphone camera (even one on a smartphone) to have a whole lot of bells and whistles. I'm guessing that by 3.0, many gripes will have been addressed.
- sovietninja, on 07/20/2008, -3/+41Wait you mean SP1 right?
- wontstoptalking, on 07/19/2008, -6/+88Dugg because I can use this as an excuse to not buy the iPhone, which I can't afford. Even though it's not a very good excuse. And I still really want it. And I'm sure I can afford it if-no! I can't afford it, stop it, stop it!!!!
- energyblue, on 07/19/2008, -0/+20Good luck. Remain Strong.
- wontstoptalking, on 07/19/2008, -1/+6Thanks. Hopefully with support from people like you, I can hold off until I can afford over $2000 after two years. Oh, who am I kidding, that's not any time soon :'-(
Maybe I'll get an iPod Touch...but it's $100 more than the iPhone!!! Will there be a price drop, or a new iPod Touch version, or will they simply discontinue it? There's no way they will continue to sell something that is the iPhone minus the phone $100 more than the iPhone. - CobaltBlue, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2You'll be saving a lot of money in the short term with the iPod touch. I too hope they go down in price. I love both my 1st and 3rd generation Nano's and would love to have a touch.
- avihappy, on 07/20/2008, -5/+2"Maybe I'll get an iPod Touch...but it's $100 more than the iPhone!!!"
I think the 200 dollar price is only if you ALREADY own an iPhone and have its corresponding ATT contract. Otherwise you pay $400. - sovietninja, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Or you could invest in buying fresh sliced bread, and your favorite Skippy or Reese's peanut butter and whatever your favorite jelly or preserves are, and make urself alot of yummy sammiches with that $2,000 over 2 years! It's also a good idea to run everyday so you don't become a fat guy like me though.
- Kerrigore, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4The iPod touch will likely not see an update until September after the back to school promo runs out; typically, Apple uses this promo to clear out old iPod stock before bringing in new models, since they are effectively giving out a ton of iPod nanos and touches for "free".
- wontstoptalking, on 07/19/2008, -1/+6Thanks. Hopefully with support from people like you, I can hold off until I can afford over $2000 after two years. Oh, who am I kidding, that's not any time soon :'-(
- andreo, on 07/20/2008, -1/+23Better excuse then mine. I was going to buy one on Friday but I was on a date and just walking around the mall killing time before Dark Knight started. We walk into the Apple store and I notice there's no sign saying they are out of stock. The GF says I should ask someone if they have them in which it turns out they did. But there was a line (4 people). There was also only 20 minutes before the movie started.
She tells me that I should go for it. I think it over and decide that it would be pretty f'ked up to walk into the movie late because I waited in line for the phone. She says it's no big deal, she'll wait with me.
The movie was great. She surprises me by saying "so that's how two face was born" and explains later that she grew up watching batman cartoons.
I didn't get the phone. But I think the GF is a keeper...- Virgule, on 07/20/2008, -0/+9::high five::

and you lied about the GF - andreo, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Hmm, everyone knows that two face is in the movie. There are pics of him. So the movie studio spoiled it for you long before I even mentioned it.
And yes, she says that that she grew up watching batman. I had a choice. Scream "liar!!!" and make her walk home. Or take her word for it since most women wouldn't even remember the name two face even if they did research it before they went to the movie. That and the fact that she starts rattling off everyone from the other movies. Who played them and what she did and didn't like about them. I'm gonna take her word for it.

* No video recording
* No focus on the camera
* No light on the camera
* No zoom on the camera
* No recording of audio on the device
* No physical keyboard
* AT&T exclusivity
* No Cut and Paste
* No Stereo bluetooth
* Can you send MMS yet?
However this phone does have several things that make it accessible to the mass public:
* easy to use user interface
* large 3.5? widescreen
* solid media playback and storage

Not Apple software! Apple is perfect!!!
- sadilak, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1what the IPhone needs is a hardware refresh. The current hardware is simply insufficient. Seems that they have a bunch of issues in their plate. 1. Their Mobileme push service is anything but push, 2. the iphone and the 3g hardware and software issues.

- theCreator79, on 07/20/2008, -15/+19Don't they test this stuff out??!! I mean come on! It's not like this is 1 bug or something, this is a bunch of bugs! This is like Vista. I expected more out of Apple. I waited 8 hours in line because of activation issues and now this... Basically every one of the 10 apps I downloaded has crashed my phone. FTW!
- aloyeo, on 07/20/2008, -2/+15WTF you mean :)

- theCreator79, on 07/20/2008, -9/+2No, I meant FTW!
- diabulos, on 07/20/2008, -4/+12Actually, Vista did not mainly crash (far fewer crashes that with XP I'll dare say) it lacked drivers mainly. I give you that the moving of files was slow, but not to the point of switching out of the process, as the Iphone does now, going back to the home screen and not letting any app run from then on until you restart the thing. It does give a glimpse that if Apple gets more market share they will have to revise their strategy, it is easy to give quality for a limited set of options, as soon as they grow and you get millions getting to it, then, it is not really there (need we mention the server crashes on launch day?) it also shows that MS does a very decent job keeping stability given the myriad of configs in which their software is installed....
- theCreator79, on 07/20/2008, -4/+1I meant in terms of disappointment, the iPhone 3g device is almost as big a disappointment as Vista... And MS doesn't do a very decent job with anything compared to the money the rake in for their buggy crappy product and you can't blame it on 3rd party software because MS should do a better job of integrating.
- MacParrot, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2Can we stop comparing Vista to the iPhone? Let's go back to car analogies instead. Hold on, I hate those even more.
Apple will eventually make it right. The developers of iPhone apps will make those right or they will disappear. This isn't exactly rocket science to figure out. I'm glad I've held out on buying an iPhone so far though.
- Gimpyfuzznut, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7Actually considering how Vista needs to support millions of devices and billions of possible configurations, this is actually worse than Vista.
- FutureGuy, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5Dugg you down from a PC running Vista with over a dozen apps installed (including games like WoW) which hasn't ever crashed (yes ever), yes I did do a clean install after getting it and the PC has 2gb RAM and a half decent video card. So no iPhone is not like Vista. In fact considering the endless number of applications that can run on it using infinite number of hardware combinations Vista is a pretty damn good OS, ok now let me run for cover.

I have the first gen phone. After upgrading there is some lag. SMS, email, and some apps will work most of the time but every once and awhile do something really strange. From locking up to the very rare phone reboot.
I still plan on upgrading. Because I know I won't have new problems on the 2nd gen phone. But I also know that when the next version comes out most / all that will be fixed.

I read a lot in forums about those GPS problems. And it almost always goes like this:
"Damn the GPS stopped working."
...
"Oh wait, I just went outside and now it works. Seems like it's not working indoors."

- bsonline, on 07/20/2008, -19/+15So - when your target market is a bunch of dedicated to the point of obsession fanboys, Apple shines. Apple goes mainstream and...omg...chinks in the armor.
Apple, drop the ego. Design is amazing, but engineering is essential. You go fully mainstream and _wow_ the shine starts to dull. I appreciate macs, I hated the ipod as passionately as I "love" my iPhone. Impulse stupidity of the masses and blind loyalty will only get you so far. Don't let it take you a long way off of a short pier.- doubleaught, on 07/20/2008, -2/+4What a shortsighted comment. Apple releases their first phone ever (last year) and they have zero major problems, AT&T issues notwithstanding. Price was the biggest complaint, and rightfully so. You get one software update that wasn't perfect and start talking like Apple doesn't know what they're up against.
That being said, they should have beta tested the software more. Apple certainly ***** up their mobileme transition - they made up with a free month but that shouldn't have been necessary.
You pretend like Apple is the only company to ***** up. Sounds like an.... inverse fanboy.- bsonline, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1No, I sound more like a self-hating fanboy...
But, aside from a very well designed interface, the iPhone is one of the worst phones on the market. I'm not just talking about features - I bought mine knowing it was missing a few bells and whistles - but call quality is rather low. Speakerphone is dismal, even when compared to a razr.
In addition to this, you get the bad software update (which I'm not having problems with). Worst of all is the really bad community involvement. Apple, for now, is in a very good position - but do they have to take advantage of it so severely, at the expense of customers an devs? - brentbloodworth, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0I have to agree that the phone hardware itself is a problem. The interface is awesome and it can do some much more than my old Treo but I didn't replace my Treo 3 times in a year. I am a big fan of Apple products but they do seem to be having more problems (iPhone, Leopard, MobileMe, etc) lately than before.
- bsonline, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1No, I sound more like a self-hating fanboy...

- mark076h, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11i live in a wooded area and i find the GPS to not work very good, or it takes forever to acquire the signals but if i go out where there is not alot of trees i find it works very good, i know it's the iPhone because i would never have trouble getting a good signal with my garmin gps unit.
Also i keep getting the problem where you need to restart the phone to get gps or triangulation to work at all, i read that there is a bug if you use a 3rd party app that uses location services it will not let go of it and you need to restart the phone if you want another application or the map to get a location.
I am hoping this is all software problems and a patch will fix it, even being inside if you have alot of windows you should still get a good gps signal.- johnpaul191, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3if i power up my garmin next to a large window, it seems to be about 50/50 if it will work. i def remember using a garmin handheld unit a few years ago that had to live far out on my dashboard or it would not know where we were. that one NEVER worked indoors. i wonder if these phone based ones use the cell towers as backup? that could explain why it takes you forever to lock in when out in more rural areas.
It sounds like the iPhone GPS won't be replacing a car version of a Garmin or TomTom anytime soon (if ever). The only reason i find that unfortunate is that the iPhone would always have net access for (possibly free?) traffic updates. The dedicated subscriptions for car GPS units are kind of expensive for people that don't need the info every day.
- johnpaul191, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3if i power up my garmin next to a large window, it seems to be about 50/50 if it will work. i def remember using a garmin handheld unit a few years ago that had to live far out on my dashboard or it would not know where we were. that one NEVER worked indoors. i wonder if these phone based ones use the cell towers as backup? that could explain why it takes you forever to lock in when out in more rural areas.

- Galaxylander, on 07/20/2008, -5/+9Good luck buying a PHONE if you don't want to spend a lot of money over time. People are acting like it's something new for phones to have contracts...
- johnpaul191, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3yeah, i agree. the old iPhone plans were WAY cheaper than what i pay for my Treo on Verizon. If it was your first smartphone, then it may be a surprise. Anyone that jumped to an iPhone from any other smartphone (even on AT&T) realized what a deal it was.
- johnkmiecik, on 07/20/2008, -1/+0Seriously. I just don't understand why people are freaking out over the total cost of ownership. I don't think I ever heard that term mentioned in regards to the first iPhone. I'm saving money by leaving Sprint and their awful BlackBerry data charges behind. It's cheaper than a BlackBerry. Every time a pundit starts to pontificate about how expensive this iPhone is compared to the last one, I just skip the story or fast-forward the podcast. It's much adieu about nothing.
- BOFH2, on 07/20/2008, -2/+18clean off the 3rd party apps and see if that fixes some of the problems.
- lordtyros, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5But I don't want to. When they work, they're really awesome. But there are periods where everything I launch closes immediately, including Safari! A power down fixes it, but it's happened way too frequently.

- ahawks, on 07/20/2008, -4/+12Well ... surprise everyone, Apple products are real hardware and software man-made creations. The 3rd party apps are obviously going to be buggy. They are on a new framework, written by developers new to the platform, who couldn't actually deploy to the device until very recently other than a simulator.
It'll get better, but it's no surprise there are some issues for now.- johnpaul191, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4yes, and they got people locked in for at least another year. Plenty of time to sort it out. That's an unfortunate truth. The issues all suck, but did anyone expect them to sell more iPhones on opening weekend than last year?
- johnkmiecik, on 07/20/2008, -1/+0You hit the nail on the head. Early adopters always get bitten. HD-DVD owners took the proverbial dick up the ass when they picked a side that ended up losing. I think these nine days have gone just fine for Apple, a vocal minority are the ones really upset by nothing.
- fabio1, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1last.fm so far has been the buggiest app i´ve seen. however, i saw in their forums that they have already submitted an updated version, but apple still hasn´t approved it yet.

My first generation iPhone with the new 2.0 software is doing a few strange things, but this is still the best mobile phone in the world. Period.- ZenFu, on 07/20/2008, -2/+7Don't fool yourself. The iPhone is simply a slick GUI in substandard hardware with an awesome design. Nothing more.
The N96 has MUCH more in terms of hardware than the iPhone. It's only downside is the OS which, while usable, is a POS compared to the iPhone or WinMo.
I had an XDA for 3 years. I modded the ***** out of it. I rarely had app crashes because i knew how to treat the phone and tweak it for optimal performance. I can't say the same for a BB cos i've never owned one so....nvm about that.
So you're probably wondering why I, a tech savvy consumer, picked the iPhone over a nokia or a more powerful WinMo phone? It's simple. Apple's tech is intuitive. The UI is near-perfect and does exactly what i want it to do with ease.
Plus i got mine for free. :D
In this day and age, fanboyism is over-rated. Make informed buying decisions based on your needs, not because your favourite company released a new toy. Companies don't care about you, they care about their bottom line. You'd do well to remember that.
Oh, last point. Stop being a ***** apologist. Bugs are something to be expected but from what i gather, 2.0 has some real issues that shouldn't have gotten past QA. Consumers are not beta testers, neither should they be treated as such. For what customers have to pay for the 3G, they're damn right in being pissed at apple for releasing a buggy revision. - gashad, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5Wow, it's been a while since I've heard the "...NOT" joke.... NOT.
1992 called. They want their Waynes World joke back.

- oblivian92, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Are these problems only on the 3g? Please say yes, I just bought the 1st gen and I havent even gotten my sim card yet. I dont want my first experience with an iPhone to be like this.
- OneStepAhead, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3they are with the 2.0 software

- rwbronco, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5you can take a screenshot on the iphone now by holding down the power button, then pressing the home button and releasing them at thee same time. The screen will flash white. It puts this picture in your photos app but when you try to zoom in on that picture later...it freezes the iphone to a point where even holding down the home buutton won't close the app - you have to restart it.
how did thatt one manage to slip by the developers?- cotaskmemalloc, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5haha, yikes, I just tried it, i crashes hard...

The superior Apple usability/intuitiveness. - Qumahlin, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3Just tried it on my 3g iPhone and it works fine. I took a screenshot, opened photos and zoomed in and out a few times, no issue at all.
- Anevilweasel, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4just tried it...mine worked fine...i'm running a 1st gen though so...maybe there is a difference.
- gann, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3just tried it, no problem at all

- peestandingup, on 07/20/2008, -2/+6Here's a news flash. Most 3rd party apps for phone OS's are *****. Just because its an iPhone doesn't make a bit of difference. My Blackberry Curve does funky ***** daily once I went 3rd party.
- Gimpyfuzznut, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Stop talking about third-party applications! Did you guys read the ***** article!
