First iPhone Hands-On
gizmodo.com — Hands-on report on the iPhone, live from WWDC: "In my hand, the 3G iPhone is lighter, fits better, and noticeably thinner. I made a call with it, side by side with my 1st generation iPhone, and the reception is noticeably better as well. I can't even believe this is frigging AT&T anymore." Updated constantly.

- wjrothman, on 06/09/2008, -26/+11Good call quality? What will Apple think of next?????? (Seriously, that's good news.)
- slingr, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2you are probably getting dugg down by all the apple fanboys... i thought you comment was funny.
- clockdist, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1That is funny... I think people are digging without thinking; i.e., out of reflex.
- gimmeslack12, on 06/09/2008, -16/+63Good thing AT&T is shaping up, they're gonna have A LOT of new customers very very soon.
(Including me)- pintomp3, on 06/10/2008, -2/+16have they stopped spying on their customers?
- gimmeslack12, on 06/10/2008, -9/+2Who Apple? They never did (the iTunes thing is hardly wiretapping). I think you're confusing Apple with the Republicans.
- HamNCheese, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10...or AT&T
- jaredcat, on 06/10/2008, -2/+2I think the wiretaps were on landline customers.

- weizbox, on 06/10/2008, -6/+18F that, I'm waiting for Google Android. I like being able to use the hardware I'm paying for...
- kaplanfx, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9there is still no guarantee. While google provides the source for the OS, the device manufacturers and providers are still completely free to put what they want on it, and keep you from doing what you want with it.
- HamNCheese, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Indeed. Nothing in the Cell carrier business is truly "open" or "free"
- shoook, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2And if you're on Verizon that essentially means you can do nothing.

- JettaMan, on 06/10/2008, -9/+4I don't care. Enough with these stupid Apple iPhone spam ads. Digg is supposed to be about news not telemarketing.
- shoook, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Does anyone know what will happen to current iPhone owners who want to purchase the new model? I've heard you can only buy the new iPhone with a new contract due to AT&T's subsidization. Is this true?
- pintomp3, on 06/10/2008, -2/+16have they stopped spying on their customers?
- showtime22, on 06/10/2008, -7/+30now i'm just waiting for my old phone and ipod to die...
- Tyr7BE, on 06/10/2008, -21/+12It's an Apple product - you won't be waiting long. My first and only iPod blew its top one week past the warranty expiry date. Others I know have had similar experiences.
- RudeTurnip, on 06/10/2008, -4/+14I leave my iPod mini in my truck all year long, in freezing weather and hot weather (it's been 100 degrees on the east coast for a couple days now). It's been working fine since 2004...just a counterexample.
- MacParrot, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7My son is now using my 1st gen nano. Funny how mine always seem to work past the warranty and all
- johnpaul191, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6They never said the old phone was an iPhone.
As for Apple products, i have great luck. desktops, laptops and ipods..... and i don't handle them with mittens by any means. hell, i know a few people with 1st generation iPods that still work. the battery was never replaced, so that's an issue, but they leave them in their car (year round) and they function as well as they always have. - postalblowfish7, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7my first gen 5gig iPod still works. so does my MacPlus from the 80's. just sell them and get a new one ;P
- Tyr7BE, on 06/10/2008, -3/+11G 2G and 3G were all fantastic. Most people I know who didn't wreck or lose theirs are still going strong, all these years later. I think it was at 4G that they started putting in parts that were designed to fail.
- balupton, on 06/10/2008, -3/+2Myself and all my mates that have had iPods, have gone through the iPods dying within the year. I have gone through 2 myself and just not buying any more. However, the problem with iPods is from them using a hard drive, where I believe the iPhone and Nanos don't (of course huge GB models would).
- dcrad, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3I have an ipod video thats over 2.5 years old and it still works 100% - I reckon if your unluckly enough to have a product (from most companies) your just that, unlucky - get over it.

- OneManArmy, on 06/10/2008, -9/+13this is actually a better hands-on article than the engadget one. for example, making a call and comments on audio.
- rhodesman, on 06/10/2008, -7/+2Nice, I've been looking forward to a good review of the 3G iPhone. I'll be picking mine up when they come out. Now what to do with my Edge iPhone.... hurm....
- MattBlackCat, on 06/10/2008, -15/+6Emporers new clothes - can't hide that for many people it is sill not that great.
- dshPls, on 06/10/2008, -2/+12What's not great, your spelling?
- nblsavage, on 06/10/2008, -3/+5If you don't like it, don't buy it. Why gripe?
- jabberwolf, on 06/10/2008, -8/+3It's not great because there really wasnt much done to it.
1- the GPS is assisted - basically must pay ATT for that
2- No stereo blue tooth - this is COMPLETELY Mactarded not to have for a media device.
3- black plastic?
Ok good things:
its cheaper
its as fast as other phones now
it is thinner
That's about it, all the other things they promised are NOT there.
Its was supposed to break into the business market using MS active sync = NOT THERE
It might have had a conference phone? = NOT THERE
It still cant do flash and cant do Java.
AND IT STILL CANT CUT AND PASTE GRRRRRRRrrrrr
WTF did Apple developers do all dam year, or did they just leave it to the PROPAGANDA machine (marketing) to do all their work?- kaplanfx, on 06/10/2008, -2/+9you don't understand how a-gps works do you? Stereo bluetooth ruins the quality of the music (compressing and un-compressing an already compressed audio file? ugh). I'm not going to judge the new physical features till I hold one in my own hands.
They didn't promise active sync, just exchange support
not sure what you mean by conference phone
Java? yuck. I'll give you flash, especially since they are trying to build an internet phone. I can't imagine flash takes so much more horsepower than the great games they were showing off.
Yeah cut and paste is lacking, I wonder if there is a good way to do it with just touch.
edit: re assisted gps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGPS
"GPS is a satellite based positioning system. Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS, was introduced to enhance performance"
"Conventional GPS has difficulty providing reliable positions in poor signal conditions. For example when surrounded by tall buildings (as a result of multipath), or when the satellite signals are weakened by being indoors or under trees. Some newer receivers are better at handling these situations.
In addition, when first turned on in these conditions, some non-assisted GPS units may not be able to download the almanac and ephemeris information from the GPS satellites, rendering them unable to function until a clear signal can be received continuously for up to one minute."
so A-gps is there for when the satellite cannot get a lock, or to update map information. It's a real gps, which with a 3rd party app and built in maps wouldn't need cell signal.- xNIBx, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Stereo bluetooth is a must for a music phone, regardless if you want it or not. Your argument about compression could potentially be used for mp3. If iphone didnt play mp3, you apple fanboys would claim "meh, mp3 is compressed sound, who needs it? Apple's drm infested codecs are so much superior".
You deserve to get scammed by apple.
Also how about fm radio? Not all of us have a billion hours to set up playlists. How about some video recording capabilities? I cant remember when was the last phone that came out that couldnt record video. How about a microsdhc slot so that you can add more memory to it? You can get 8gB for like 40$(and by the end of the year we might have 32gB versions).
Can you copy/paste text? Can you send and receive files through bluetooth? 2mp camera with no autofocus and flash, what is this, a cheap low end phone? Does it have sms delivery report? Does it have a proper gps navigation program, because googlemaps dont really cut it? Does it have a replaceable battery?
I wont even go for videocalls/mms because not many people use those features, although i cant figure why the iphone doesnt have mms support.

Do you think i should ebay my original iphone now while everyone is still paying big bucks?- estvir, on 06/10/2008, -2/+10Isn't it impossible now to get one without a contract because activation is now in-store only?
- Scottievm, on 06/10/2008, -2/+2Will Apple no longer sell it through their website and Apple stores? That'd be pretty annoying...
- chrispr, on 06/10/2008, -0/+9You cannot get one without a 2-year contract.
- theliamburns1, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3Really??? So there's no upgrade option for current iphone users? I highly highly doubt that.
- hagfish70, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3As you should. There is in fact an upgrade option with AT&T. Although it will tie you into another 2 years with them. Good thing it is not in addition to what you have left on your current contract.
- jayzeus, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Nothing is stopping you from upgrading, and probably resetting your contract for another 2 years.... You simply can't just buy the phone.
- meatmcguffin, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4You can in the UK; O2 have a pay-and-go option on their website but details are sparse to say the least

- bigbadgoat, on 06/10/2008, -2/+11They ***** everything up.
I'm in ***** Newfoundland. Just try getting reception outside of St. John's (which is the far eastern edge of the province) Theres about 1500 kms of TCH that gets ZERO reception from Rogers, and even in the city, the reception is *****.
Anyone know if these can be used with Bell/Aliant or Telus networks, because I'd love to have one, but there's no ***** way in hell I'm dealing with those asshats.- wallryan, on 06/10/2008, -1/+5im in nova scotia, i've been using my iphone on rogers, it sucks...same position as you...no aliant doesn't cover it in canada it is rogers and fido...thats it
- HumanRecall, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3I'm a Nova Scotian living in Toronto - Telus and Bell run their networks on CMD - the e
iphones are GCM - they are not compatible even with a sim card swap out
I don't know about alliant but i know for a fact on ROgers -but their was an article about Telus considering going to GCM in the summer but Telus prices are just as outlandish as the others ! - bigbadgoat, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2I would rather cut off my left testicle than give rogers another time.
They have to be one of the most poorly run businesses in Canada.
Customer Service? It's worst than non-existant. Not only do they not resolve anything, they have an uncanny ability to make things worse. - wallryan, on 06/10/2008, -3/+1http://www.apple.com/ca/iphone/buy/
this is where Canadians can get their iphones
- bigbadgoat, on 06/10/2008, -2/+11They ***** everything up.
- angrycat, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7Rogers? More like Robbers.
- mellenger, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2They are going to do a 3yr contract rather than the 2yr one that AT&T has. I don't think i've ever had a phone from rogers that wasn't on a 3 yr contract.
- TheSevenDuffs, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Yep, 3yr contract for sure. I just hope they don't require you buy some horrible browsing package. Their rates are horrible. $15/MB for the first 5
- treed, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1O2 in the UK has 18 month contracts, and maybe much lower prices, depending on which plan you sign up for.
- jaredcat, on 06/10/2008, -3/+1Canadians, ay? I think Rogers is too far in bed with RIM (another canuck company) to ever give iPhone lovers a break.
- HumanRecall, on 06/11/2008, -2/+2http://www.rim.com/products/index.shtml
id a BlackBerry supporter and backer ! WTF are you talking about !/??

- vagarach, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4Oh and $100 a month, probably. Stupid rogers, their whole business model revolves around ripping people off. Guess what the average monthly rogers wireless bill is. $72.39, for a CELLPHONE!
- HumanRecall, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Tell me something i don't know !
Telus and Alliant and Bell and Fido are all the same !! All of Canadians providers are ***** rip offs !!
Rogers isn't alone in these scandalous charging amounts !!

- treed, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3My (2G, obviously) iPhone has borders to the left and right of the screen.
- JlmAWP, on 06/10/2008, -14/+13No MMS just baffles me at this point. 3G, decent camera quality...there's really no reason not to. I really hate having to log into viewmymessage.crap all the time.
I got the 1st gen the day it was release, don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone more than I'd like to admit, but this is a no-brainer to me.- trunkster, on 06/10/2008, -5/+14MMS in the next couple of years should really be phased out of all phones. I believe it would be a lot better if you could just check your e-mail on your phone for the same price. That way you can keep all those photos backed up a server incase your phone is damaged.
- HamNCheese, on 06/10/2008, -6/+1No way I'm paying "per e-mail"... No freakin way
- ZionicIon, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3Who said anything about paying per email?
- locojones, on 06/10/2008, -2/+2Whatever is in the Apple Kool Aid must be pretty amazing, because Apple users will praise even their mistakes. There's simply no excuse for MMS not to be in the iPhone, it's a basic function. Especially given Apple fan's never-ending loyalty to "it's simple, it just works" philosophy, why would the company make something like sending a picture more complicated than it has to be? Why have to snap a photo, open the email client, figure out what provider your recipients are on, then figure out the myriad of email addresses each of those different providers uses, then type those into the line, then attach the picture, then hope that they have a data plan and can receive it?
What's wrong with how MMS works? Open a message, type in a list of simple phone numbers, attach photo and go. If Apple genuinely cared about simplicity and ease of use, then MMS is the only way to go. Omitting it as a fundamental feature of the phone is negligent and IMO stupid. E-mail will NEVER replace the simplicity and ease of sending an MMS to one or even a group of contacts.- HolyChimp, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4The idea is that if everyone used email over MMS then you wouldnt have to do that. You find your photo, tap send email, tap the name of whoever you're sending it to and voila!
The iPhone doesn't do morse code or smoke signals either. Wanna cry about that too? - locojones, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2The fact that you try to conflate MMS with antiquated forms of communication like smoke signals doesn't change the fact that EVERY phone on the market, save the iPhone, communicates pictures via MMS and that its omission is a serious error in judgment.
Why should every user in the country have to purchase an additional data plan to send quick pictures to one another when text messaging packages suffice to solve the problem at a much cheaper cost and is easier than sending an e-mail will ever be?
The fact is, e-mail will NEVER be more convenient or easier to do than sending an MMS. You guys don't know how stupid you sound when you parrot the "it's so easy, it just works" mantra, and then try to justify why having to discern multiple email addresses, constantly update your contacts whenever someone changes carriers, and punching in needless information and extra steps into sending an e-mail is somehow easier than just typing in a phone number. It's ridiculously stupid, so just stop it. - jbella, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2Every phone has it?
Funny none of my phones ever had MMS. I can't believe people really care so much about this lame "feature."
My last phone was a sidekick. It used email to send pictures. Seems like a no brainer to me. If I use email, then I can send pictures of people and they can view them on their phone (if their phone can receive email), on their computer, on someone else's computer etc etc. If I use MMS, they can only view the thing on their phone, and if they are on a different carrier than I am on, then they might not even get it at all. Plus MMS typically costs extra to send. Not sure if any carriers charge to receive MMS messages. And what happens if a recipient has an MMS capable phone, but no MMS messaging plan? Do they get charged? Does the message fail?
MMS seems like the worst way you can think of to send an image to someone. - CIAVT, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Take picture, attach to email, send email to friend(s) phone number with @vtext or @tmobile etc... at the end.
Bam, you just sent an email from the iPhone to a normal phone. Just like you would.... in a MMS! (and it was free)
- HolyChimp, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4The idea is that if everyone used email over MMS then you wouldnt have to do that. You find your photo, tap send email, tap the name of whoever you're sending it to and voila!
- HamNCheese, on 06/10/2008, -6/+1No way I'm paying "per e-mail"... No freakin way
- utahnkid, on 06/10/2008, -2/+13I know of a few phones (and they're all multi-function smart phones) that don't support MMS and make you use e-mail. I think it's because there isn't a set standard that works between all the different carriers yet. I remember it was a couple of years ago when Sprint announced it would be compatible with Verizon's picture mail service and it was a big deal. Once every phone has legit emailing capabilities MMS will become redundant anyways. Why would you need two different ways to send messages especially when email supports much higher resolution pictures?
- Iceduck, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3In Europe it's pretty common for all carriers to accept MMS sent from other carriers. The thing is just that push email can do the same basic thing, and then you have the advantage of having the clip or image on your computer as well for easy forwarding.
- spoonchucks, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1This is the way Japanese cell phones are. SMS is actually a secondary texting function that isn't really used so much. When you sign a new contract, they ask you for a username for your email (e.g., spoonchucks@docomo.ne.jp). Anything sent to that address is pushed to your phone on receipt. And not with some $50 blackberry personal plan.
I miss my DoCoMo/AU phone.

- Dingoboy, on 06/10/2008, -6/+9My question is, What are we going to do with our old iPhones? Are they going to re-lock them when we switch to our newer 3G hand sets?(do they just swap the sim card in store?) I would personally like to still use my old iPhone as a mp3 player and web browser. just my $0.02

- dagamer34, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Because the iPhone 3G will be sold already activated to a carrier, the first iPhone is the only one that can be reliably unlocked. So no, the value should either stay the same or increase.

- Nothlit, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3Very slowly...
Actually, after reading between the lines in some of the press releases and the AT&T memo that went out yesterday, it sounds like AT&T Stores will be doing in-store activation, while Apple Stores may just be signing you up for the contract and then letting you go home and do the iTunes tether yourself. That way you are still locked into the contract before you leave the store, but they don't have to waste time opening up the box and doing all of the activation stuff right then and there. - spoonchucks, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1I believe the term is "Mongolian Cluster *****."
Dude, I wish I was fanboy enough to go to an Apple store just to watch the inevitable resulting fights. I began losing my enthusiasm for Apple products once the iPhone 1.0 launched, and it was totally wiped out once my Airport Express started dying (>1yr from purchase).
- Nothlit, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3Very slowly...
- utahnkid, on 06/10/2008, -11/+2AT&T or Apple better give priority to the people who bought the iPhone when it first came out. The only reason that phone received so much praise and lust was from us paying the huge premium (ESPECIALLY those of us who paid the $600 in the very beginning) and flashing it around for everyone to see. They came through with the rebate after the price drop, and it kept me a loyal customer. Come on Apple, lets see some love.
- Ramble, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4Why should Apple reward you for being a stupid *****?
- utahnkid, on 06/10/2008, -2/+1Anger management much?
- Sairynn, on 06/10/2008, -0/+15Why? Apple said, "The price is $600" and you said, "OK. Here's my money." No one is to blame but you.
- utahnkid, on 06/10/2008, -2/+2To blame? I never said I regretted it. I'd gladly pay it again for this version. It's been by far the best phone I've ever owned. I carry a Treo 755p and an iPhone. I LOATH the moments I'm forced to use the Treo.
- danielman94, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3Then what are you complaining about? I mean, in a nice way.

- Hockey13, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Sairynn makes a very good point, but let's not ***** all over utahnkid's comment. I think it can be definitively said that without Apple's hardcore users, it would be a lot harder for them to make as big of a splash as they do. Customer relations is a very dangerous ground to tread, and it's in Apple's best interests to reward loyalty. After all, Apple really needs high initial sales figures to "prove" the viability of whatever they're selling, but why would people buy something at launch if they knew soon after the price would fall? Apple probably should do something to at least make their hardcore customers feel like they're not being shafted.
On the other hand, utahnkid, I will be probably be buying the iPhone in the summer. I was patient and I'm being rewarded for high quality with little price, but I sacrificed a year of (possibly) quality iPhone time. Though you are important to Apple, you have to consider the fact that you also paid a premium to have it earlier than most people were willing to have it.
All that said, I think it's a bit naive to be loyal to a brand :-). If you feel Apple screws you over after this launch, it's entirely within your rights to never buy another Apple product again.- utahnkid, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1I'm not a good example of a "loyal customer". If even the dreaded Microsoft decided to make a phone and it was genuinely better, I'd buy it in a second. I just saw a video of the Android OS and I think it's really going to give Apple some tough competition. I don't necessarily want any special treatment, I just don't want to get hosed by AT&T when I go to pick up the iPhone 3G and they tack on 2 additional years or give me ANY drama because my current contract isn't up yet. I've heard they'll just restart your obligation but who knows, I haven't seen anything official as far as that goes. Phone companies can be real dicks so it honestly wouldn't surprise me if they lived up to their reputation once again.

- utahnkid, on 06/10/2008, -17/+59Anyone who can't see why this phone is getting so much attention and doesn't think it's that important:
How many HTC Touch versions of ANY websites are there? None
How many cars offer full integration with your Samsung Instinct? None
How many dozens of manufactures offer products tailored specifically to your Nokia N95, like speaker docks and cases? What maybe a handful? And those are just for cases
These manufacturers put the majority of their attention on the Iphone because it brings in the most dough.
These articles keep cropping up because there is a HUGE demand for them. The websites that produce them aren't doing it for charity, they're doing it for MONEY. They have proven statistics that iPhone related articles receive WAY more attention from viewers and the more viewers you pull the more you can demand from your advertisers.
If the iPhone attention was all based on hype with nothing to really back it up it would have died down within months of the first version's release (Segway anyone?). It's been over a year and as far as I can tell the attention just keeps growing. I'll agree that sometimes people are attracted to something solely because it's "trendy" but that alone can only take a product so far. The iPhone IS that revolutionary and it IS that good.
For all the haters.. Ignorance must be bliss.- 1platypus, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10Good explanation. I have not heard anyone sum it up that well.
- Laminarcissus, on 06/10/2008, -10/+3Of course it brings them the most dough. That's because Steve Jobs invented the concept of the Infinite Number of Douchebags:
"If you make a product that has half the functionality of other products in its class, but round the corners and engineer in some cornerstone flashy feature, then an infinite number of douchebags who do no product research, have more money than good sense, get their technology news from Maxim, and will buy a car because it interfaces with their device despite the fact that a $10 cable from Radio Shack can make any car interface with any device, will beat a path to your door."
$500 sandals sell every year, $1,500 unstructured hemp sports coats from Peru sell every year, iPhones sell every year, all thanks to the Infinite Number of Douchebags. - locojones, on 06/10/2008, -11/+2How many HTC Touch versions of websites are there? - It doesn't need special versions made for it because it can browse the real internet like the iPhone claimed it was supposed to.
How many cars offer full integration with Samsung? - Uh, any vehicle that you can plug into the media port or connect to via bluetooth?
How many dozens of manufacturers? - People using the N95 don't need a speaker dock or pretty cases because they're too busy doing other useful things with their phone than having to show it off. And they don't need the crappy sound that comes out of a two speaker dock because they can afford an N95, which means they have better stereo equipment than can come from some silly add-on.
The iPhone isn't revolutionary. Get your head out of the Kool Aid and go outside and meet people. It's just a phone.- utahnkid, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4Sorry, wrong answer. No one makes an HTC Touch version because that phone will soon disappear into obscurity like EVERY other Win mobile phone has before it and investing any time in it would be a complete waste. The iPhone can render the regular web pages just fine but that doesn't change the fact that 2.5G was never that fast and even 3G isn't as fast as WiFi so it doesn't hurt to have a slim version that takes advantage of the iPhones very unique interface. In some cases, they can actually make the website more user friendly on the iPhone because of it's unique touchscreen capabilities (and I know your tiny brain just read that like I was implying touchscreen's are unique to the iPhone but I'm referring to the very specific way in which the iPhone's touch screen works so save the IPHONE DIDNT INVENT TOUCHSCREENS rebuttal, I already know that)
You obviously have NO CLUE what I'm talking about when I say FULL integration. Take a look at what BMW is doing (and you can bet MBenz and Lexus are close to follow their German competition) and educate yourself a little bit before you argue about something you don't understand. Heres a direct link:

I guess you thought I meant basic integration into your Honda Civic's stereo. I mean FULL integration into an advanced car operating system like BMW's iDrive.
"People using the N95 don't need a speaker dock or pretty cases because they're too busy doing other useful things with their phone" If that's honestly the best thing you could come up with to say.. Then I don't think I even need to waste my time. Those products don't exist because no manufacturer is going to waste time developing products for a phone that just like it's Win mobile based cousins, will soon disappear into obscurity.
And maybe you need to take a peek at my pictures before you tell me to go outside and meet people. I'd seen more of the world while I was still in my teens then you will your entire life.
- locojones, on 06/11/2008, -3/+1" that phone will soon disappear into obscurity like EVERY other Win mobile phone has before it"
Hmmm, that must be news to HTC, who is probably around the 3-4 million sales mark with the Touch by now given that they reported surpassing 2 million in sales at the start of January. And given that HTC sold 12 million handsets, all of which had WM on it last year, I'd hardly say that Windows Mobile is going away, especially given it's imminent superiority as a business platform, its ability to be adapted to any device its put on, its extensibility, monumental third party software support, and the ability to do pretty much anything the user wants it to do.
"The iPhone can render the regular web pages just fine but that doesn't change the fact that 2.5G was never that fast and even 3G isn't as fast as WiFi so it doesn't hurt to have a slim version that takes advantage of the iPhones very unique interface."
My only point was the iPhone was touted as being able to browse the "real" internet, not the "watered down" internet. Yet that's exactly what these iPhone specific web pages are, a mobile internet. Like it or not, it's the exact opposite of what was supposed to be available for the phone.
"You obviously have NO CLUE what I'm talking about when I say FULL integration"
Actually I do, and it's nowhere in the links that you provided. In fact, what it says it that: "The company said owners can access mobile-phone functions on vehicles equipped with BMW Assist and Bluetooth hands-free calling. Access to music functions via vehicle controls and radio display is enabled only on vehicles equipped with an iPod/USB interface." Wow, so like any other car with a media jack and a bluetooth capable receiver. Big whoop, works with every other phone on the market.
"And maybe you need to take a peek at my pictures before you tell me to go outside and meet people. I'd seen more of the world while I was still in my teens then you will your entire life."
The fact that you were so irked by that statement tells me I was right on the money. Seriously, it's just a phone. Be passionate about something else in life. And cut your hair, it looks ridiculous. - utahnkid, on 06/11/2008, -2/+1Your mom says that all the time. I guess it tickles her face when I'm on top.

And you would choose to focus on wireless stereo bluetooth headphones? Which are wonky? - Laminarcissus, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Yes. Globally, there are at most 2 or *maybe* 3 people who look at this iPhone and wonder how a device centered on media doesn't have stereo bluetooth.
Or how you put the feature set of the Tilt side-by-side with an iPhone and make any sense of the price difference between them.
*Maybe* three people tops, and they're certainly swamped by the number of Apple fans who look at their products with an objective, critical eye.- swimtwobirds, on 06/10/2008, -1/+0surely the point is that for a device centred on media, the critical aspect
is how easy and intuitive that experience is. Not to mention addictively tactile.
If you like the tilt, well fine, but positing an arguement based on wireless bluetooth
malarky is mad.
wireless bluetooth headsets are one thing, but the headphones are bulky *****
that runs out of juice too fast. Its reminiscent of the 'wheres my radio recording' feature
queries on the ipod.. - Laminarcissus, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1Hmm, it seems like any feature the iPhone doesn't have doesn't matter.
I'm sure that intuitive experience (which the Tilt does just fine through the Cube interface, and many phones embarrass the iPhone with their feature set/price point) will help me through the lean times, like when mono music no longer distracts me from how little money there is in my bank account. - swimtwobirds, on 06/11/2008, -2/+0buddy, that thing is running win mo 6, which is an indescribably awful piece of work.
its the size of a brick, and its not that much cheaper.
If that the feature that you care about is wireless stereo, and you'd rather have,
deep breath, a win mo6 platform to play with, in an insanely bulky slider,
well, good luck son. - Laminarcissus, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2son, what sucks about "win mo 6" is the user interface, which you don't interact with because you're using HTC's Cube interface. As a platform it's rock solid. Plus, "win mo 6" actually allows you to write and load things called "outside apps" so you can actually do stuff that Apple didn't think of. I have an app I'd like to write for iPhone, how does that work again?
The Tilt is smaller top-to-bottom, smaller-side-to-side, and is only thicker because it has a slide-out keyboard. I have three emails to respond to, 5 SMS messages, and because they're for business it has to be more than: "Niklbak rxs! CU ltr!" Who's going to finish first? I tend to think of bricks as things that sit there and don't do anything useful to anyone, so...
I'd lke to cut and paste, son, how about that? I'd like to send an MMS, son, how about that? I'd like to pay $150 for the phone with contract - how about that, son? - swimtwobirds, on 06/11/2008, -1/+0okedoke, I guess I just thought you sounded young and a wee bit angry. arf.

- SeaICIubber, on 06/10/2008, -0/+8There were quite a few phones in Europe capable of video conferencing, including the phone that I currently own (HTC Tytn) Saying that I made one video call when I first bought the phone out of curiosity, realised that not only was it a pain in the arse but you also looked a complete ***** and never used it for that again. I've got plenty of friends with 3G phones but no-one makes video-calls and I haven't seen anyone making one on the streets of London (I admit thats a relatively small sample :)
The European telecos thought that video-conferencing would drive 3G but it didn't and they got burnt in the UK in spectrum bidding wars and have been desperate in the years since to try and find something to drive data usage.
I'll bet you that anyone bitching about video-conferencing is in a country that hasn't got a mature 3G network. Europe is more advanced re. mobile phone 3G infrastructure and Apple is hopefully learning from their experiences.
The same also applies (though to a lesser extent) to MMS. The telecos didn't realise that basic sms would be such a hit and introduced MMS in a bid to try and grow the market but it never really look off, especially since cross-network compatibility took years.
Even more so now that e-mail and web browsing will give more flexible photo options. - doctordbx, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2You must have missed the article last week when fanbois were praising Steve Jobs for bringing mobile videoconferencing to America. All based on a rumour of course.
- JoeyDeacon, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Video chatting over 3G is a dud. No doubt about that. I've had 3G phones for years now and only made a couple of calls for the hell of it. Loads of reasons why, few people have 3G phones, 3G connection is unreliable, no privacy and most of the time I don't need to see who I am talking to. I could go on.
However
I would love to have a front facing camera for Video iChatting over wifi. My iPhone has taken over many of the duties of my laptop when I'm at home and the ability to iChat and iChat with video with my buddies from the comfort of my sofa, in the garden etc would be fantastic.
This was the single feature of the new iPhone i was looking forward to most and I can't believe that there wasn't more disappointment over the lack of this feature. For me this would be more of a selling point than 3G and GPS.

Actually yes, you are correct. Its called the iPhone 3G. The software that is going to ship the day it comes out is iPhone Software 2.0.
I don't think that anyone said the new iPhone is another revolutionary step in the mobile phone business, in fact, they mentioned more of the new features of just iPhones before even mentioning the 3G model.
I dunno, I bought the first iPhone on day one, been very happy with it, and will happily pay for the new one. Its not a phone for everyone, but there isn't *a* phone for everyone, such is life. Amazingly enough, it still makes me smile anytime i get a call.- Laminarcissus, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1That's the core of the whole Apple business model -- people who will "happily pay" for things that "make them smile" (and not think about anything else)

- PabloMac, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Or unlock it and go with T-Mobile, who will be in the 3G game by year end.
- briankwest, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3T-Mobile should have just skipped 3g and hit the 4G right off. They are so far behind they'll never catch up.
/b - John370, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1Yeah, that is probably what I'll end up doing. I gotta have that phone!!

- mjbaltazar, on 06/10/2008, -3/+9Imagine how many diggs and comments there are going to be when a picture gets published of Obama using an iPhone.
The site's going to crash.- CyberSol, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1especially if he's surfing digg and reddit on his iphone
- surfchicky23, on 06/10/2008, -4/+2I dont think I would ever need an Iphone. It would be more of a novelty since I only use a phone to text and call....
- Hutson, on 06/11/2008, -2/+0it's iPhone. not Iphone.
- mudpuddle, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4I saved the old iPhone specs before Apple replaced them:
Old:
Height: 4.5 inches (115 mm)
Width: 2.4 inches (61 mm)
Depth: 0.46 inch (11.6 mm)
Weight: 4.8 ounces (135 grams)
New:
Height: 4.5 inches (115.5 mm)
Width: 2.4 inches (62.1 mm)
Depth: 0.48 inch (12.3 mm)
Weight: 4.7 ounces (133 grams)
Awesome - 2 grams lighter!- BrendanSheehan, on 06/11/2008, -1/+3Plastic back. Although the slightly better radio reception would be welcome.
- pantone286, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Fits better where exactly?
- BrendanSheehan, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2In your hand.
- JointVenture, on 06/10/2008, -8/+5Even 3G cannot save Steve Jobs from what ails him.

- supersteve, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1finally coming to Canada, i can't wait to get my hands on one
- Ribbys, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4I love my iPod touch so this is a buy for me. My Treo 650 is embarrasing now with its broken audio jack, and clunky design. Blackberries are great but Im not much a texter or emailer, and prefer a better media and web experience. Blackberry still seams more suitable for business users who need email though, other than oboxious real estate agents perhaps.
- pelayostyle, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2I have MMS right now using SwirlyMMS. I'm sure it will be released for 2.0.
- LamChops, on 06/10/2008, -0/+8Looks like Kevin Rose was wrong about the front facing camera ...sigh...
- Yage2006, on 06/10/2008, -1/+8No cut and paste seriously WTF.
- SignOfHope, on 06/10/2008, -2/+6Why is that they won't add any more gb to it ?
- BrendanSheehan, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2They will
- briankwest, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2Sorry to say but at&t has issues in our area. It was so bad I had to ditch my iPhone and go with Sprint since I can get EVDO with Sprint and I don't expect 3g from at&t for a LONG TIME.
/b - HumanRecall, on 06/11/2008, -7/+1So i was dugg down for asking a question ? WTF !!!??????????????????????????//
- HumanRecall, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1So now i was dugg down AGAIN !! for asking a question on asking a question on why i was dugg down in the first place !

!!! - superfusion, on 06/11/2008, -3/+2anyone else see, "First iPhone hard-on"?
actually, now that I mention it ... - PerennialTears, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8Don't you think that since Apple moved the iPhone to its "consumer" look with black and white plastic and lower price, it means that Apple is laying the groundwork for an aluminum "Pro" model?
- thalassicus, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4no,
the move to plastic was because the metal caused too much havoc with the radios. - birdman14, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1lol this one's not even available yet and you're thinking about the pro one? i will bet my nokia n95 that there wont be an "iphone pro" however an unlikely iphone with a slideout qwerty would actually make me consider getting one.
- CIAVT, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2Well, there is no denying at SOME point we will see multiple models like the rest of the music iPods....
- thalassicus, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4no,
- ifoughtfate, on 06/11/2008, -2/+2I don't understand why more people aren't worried about stereo bluetooth?
who wants to listen to music in mono? And wired headphones... I could never go back to wired headphones after using bluetooth headphones even for a day.
I would be ditching sprint and getting an iphone 2... if it just had that one feature.- MScrip, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2So you would carry stereo Bluetooth headphones with you all the time?
The only time I would listen to music would be in my car with my AUX jack.
I don't have Bluetooth on my iPod Nano either... - PerennialTears, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1cause the average person doesn't use that shiite.
- MScrip, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2So you would carry stereo Bluetooth headphones with you all the time?
- birdman14, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1"There are 10 radio bands in here, counting 3 GSM bands, 4 3G bands,"
it has 4 gsm bands and 3 3g bands. tool. -
