Mac VS. Pc – The truth illustrated.[PIC]
duodito.se — This is a very accurate description of the differences between a Windows system and a Macintosh.
- 4776 diggs
- digg it
- YodaJones, on 07/20/2008, -403/+83Yep, that about sums it up.
- po43292, on 07/20/2008, -35/+174Yes, very scientific and full of factual information on which I can base my computer buying decisions.
/not- mediaphile, on 07/20/2008, -59/+32I didn't know single-frame comics were supposed to be scientific and full of information.
It's comedy, not an in-depth buyer's guide.
Ironically, I think your comment sums up the difference between PC and Mac (or at least their users) better than the comic does. - Chompy, on 07/20/2008, -8/+128Since it's a one-frame comic, the mac's hood should actually be sealed so that the owner cannot access it.
- marx2k, on 07/20/2008, -45/+6Chompy: Um...shouldn't both of them be that way? Good luck hacking into Windows under the hood
- juliustan, on 07/20/2008, -1/+38@marx2k
I'm pretty sure hes referring to hardware. - Kidge, on 07/20/2008, -19/+4i REALLY just don't get the comic
- ndseifi, on 07/20/2008, -18/+7Judging by the people who've been buried here, it is safe to assume that many people on digg are retarded.
- clarkd, on 07/21/2008, -4/+4@ndseifi
Judging by your post it must be safe to assume that you must be retarded and completely incapable of keeping a computer free of viruses and unnecessary apps. I give apple a few years of being popular without major viruses and etc before it succumbs to the same fate as windows. - arah91, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1@chompy actually it is sealed all thy give the mac person is a on/off switch which is accurate
- mediaphile, on 07/20/2008, -59/+32I didn't know single-frame comics were supposed to be scientific and full of information.
- Urbalist, on 07/20/2008, -31/+17You don't know anything about computers, moron.
- Iztikeit, on 07/20/2008, -13/+93I pity the person that gets confused when running windows......
- lukas88, on 07/20/2008, -32/+103I actually think it is pretty accurate too. Anything more complicated than an on/off switch would be too hard for the typical mac user to figure out.
I've made my last three computers from separate parts. They had twice the functionality of a mac at half the price. If you are going to spend a lot of time on the computer, might as well understand it, it can only help you.- marx2k, on 07/20/2008, -22/+4But god forbid you encounter the dreaded...command line
- lukas88, on 07/20/2008, -1/+21My first computer was a 286, I'm good friends with the command line.
- cklein121, on 07/20/2008, -19/+6True... except in the time you went through three computers, the Mac guy is probably still using the same one.
- libertao, on 07/21/2008, -3/+8Are you kidding? Computers don't last that long when you can hardly upgrade any parts.
- sambapati87, on 07/21/2008, -7/+1Wow, you built your own computer? That's amazing!
- nigh7dagger, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5@cklein121
Yeah, he was using the same one because he couldn't afford a new one. Not that he needed a new one anyway, it's not like he was playing any new games. - tracydanger, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Unless computing is not that important to you and it's just a tool to do your work. I don't feel like I have to be able to build a car from scratch to drive. If you love tinkering with computers, have a great time. If I want to spend more time using my computer than I do fixing it, I'm glad I have that luxury.
- pr0carbine, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1good point, I have a desktop PC for gaming and tinkering with--and a MacBook for surfing the web and doing classwork. Its a nice balance.
- over9k, on 07/20/2008, -58/+88Imagine a giant penis flying towards your mouth, and there's nothing you can do about it. And you're like "Oh man, I'm gonna have to suck this thing", and you brace yourself to suck this giant penis. But then, at the last moment, it changes trajectory and hits you in the eye. You think to yourself "Well, at least I got that out of the way", but then the giant penis rears back and stabs your eye again, and again, and again. Eventually, this giant penis is penetrating your gray matter, and you begin to lose control of your motor skills. That's when the giant penis slaps you across the cheek, causing you to fall out of your chair. Unable to move and at your most vulnerable, the giant penis finally lodges itself in your anus, where it rests uncomfortably for 4, maybe 5 hours. That's what using a mac is like.
- SirNoobius, on 07/20/2008, -10/+85what the ***** is wrong with you
- ufia, on 07/20/2008, -17/+63Great review. Five stars.
- LemonChicken, on 07/20/2008, -4/+61You stole that from Maddox you *****.
- Taquoshi, on 07/20/2008, -30/+11I don't know what your problem is, but thank you for illustrating why I don't like windows
- juliustan, on 07/20/2008, -9/+22@ Taquoshi
You don't like windows because you prefer 'it just works' over accurate descriptions? - eitup, on 07/20/2008, -14/+6FTW!!!
- Iztikeit, on 07/21/2008, -6/+11It's a win simply because the majority of Mac users are douchebags.
Windows elitism hardly exists...... - r3negadeX, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4Where is that on Maddox's site?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox- ...
- besheer, on 07/20/2008, -2/+24The comic is confusing hardware with software.

who did you piss of?- thatsgoodkarma, on 07/20/2008, -7/+14Everyone with reason.
- YodaJones, on 07/20/2008, -19/+9Looks like the Windows gamer kiddies took a Mountain Dew break from their Wii's and WOW games and saw a comic picture that didn't require any reading and got all distracted causing them to grab the exfoliating cream instead of the lotion. Which would be the Windows gamer equivalent of getting sand in their vagina's.
- danthepiercer, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1daaaamn! -311 now!
i hear that when you hit -400, Mac sends out an army of skinny, vegetarian emo virgins with pitchforks, torches, nooses and iBooks to regulate on your heretical ass.
watch out amigo, you could get scratched if your not careful!
- GenericJoshman, on 07/20/2008, -4/+7Maybe if the Windows guy was working on a sportscar of sorts I could agree with you.
- lartones, on 07/20/2008, -9/+6I thought that was the point of a PC, it's for users who like to fully understand their computer and how it works rather than just having an on and off switch?
- purelithium, on 07/20/2008, -13/+9No, owning a windows PC is having the illusion that you understand your computer and how it works. Owning a Linux box is having the actual knowledge of these things. Owning a Mac gives you the best of both worlds, you have the option of letting things be done for you, or you can smack open Terminal and pound out the bash commands.
- lartones, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Weird...because I thought Linux ran off of pc's???
- arah91, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1the mac Os is based on the linux kernel well windows wrote there own i would say macs are like taking a car that is fun to drive and welding the hood down or just putting a on/off switch on the under the hood and covering every thing else
- merwin, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1@arah91
the "mac Os" is based on the linux kernel? Try Nextstep. Two very different worlds. - jelloburn, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0@merwin and @arah91 Mac OS X is based off of the Unix kernel and implements many of the design aspects of Nextstep. Additionally, It's interesting that everybody forgets that there is a Mac called the Mac Pro which is a tower that opens and allows expansion. @purelithium has it right that Mac offers the best of both Linux and Windows without the viruses or configuration headaches.
- Aorawn, on 07/20/2008, -7/+9How's it feel to have -200 diggs?
- YodaJones, on 07/21/2008, -9/+9It feels great. Happy to oblige you windows kiddies. I think the down thumbing almost perfectly aligned with the closing of Chuck E Cheese. Coincidence?
- shinyplastic, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I always thought of it as more like this:

I mean, just look at the Storm Trooper uniforms.
- po43292, on 07/20/2008, -35/+174Yes, very scientific and full of factual information on which I can base my computer buying decisions.
- gojason, on 07/20/2008, -27/+934How old is this? When was the last time Apple made anything with Bondi Blue trim?
- carpespasm, on 07/20/2008, -5/+326When was the last time windows used that old logo? 98? ME?
- zephyr42, on 07/20/2008, -4/+59Windows ME was the last one.
http://www.rickeerepairs.co.uk/assets/images/windo ... - schoate09, on 07/20/2008, -10/+20Not sure why zephyr is being dugg down, Me was the last, 2000 used it, but came before Me.
- themastersb, on 07/20/2008, -9/+88just so everyone knows, they're both technically PCs
- flickmaster, on 07/20/2008, -19/+57themastersb: I wish this wasn't such a hard realization for everyone. I don't know why people insist that the word PC is equal to Windows. They both use the same god damn hardware now; Apple even uses the same hardware from the same manufactures as the rest of the PC manufactures. Yes, your mac uses the same processor as a Dell, it uses the same hard drive as 90% of the personal computers out there. The only difference is the extra money you pay to get it in white and with rounded corners and, of course, the software.
As for the picture I don't see this as very accurate unless you are just looking for a way to feel better about yourself for owning an Apple product. Both operating systems have the same underlying complexity (ie: the engine), it's only really the user interface that is compared by end users (ie: the inside of the cab, steering wheel, dashboard, etc). I am not saying that they are equal on the inside, just that if some ***** went inside trying to fix something in either case it would end up looking like the car represented by Windows.
The picture is great sensationalistic advertising, but it is not "...a very accurate description of the differences between a Windows system and a Macintosh." or "Mac VS. Pc..."
Sorry for the long ranting comment; the stories on Digg have just been getting worse and I got pissed off for a second. Also, I don't favor either of these operating systems, I am just sick of all these ***** "mac vs pc, LOL, pc's is no funs!" kinds of posts. They get old, fast. - epyon180, on 07/20/2008, -8/+38Mac: http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/images/news/600 ...

Entirely Seconded.
That was probably the best post i have read all day +1 - mecharabbit, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4What do you call a PC with Linux on it? I will accept the answer as an informative statement, or as a punchline.
- Junior612, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4"Both operating systems have the same underlying complexity (ie: the engine), it's only really the user interface that is compared by end users (ie: the inside of the cab, steering wheel, dashboard, etc)."
The NT kernel and the BSD kernel are completely different. NT being inherently flawed and insecure by design.
Isn't the interface really the only thing that matters to the end user? - merwin, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2@Junior612
Exactly how is NT inherently flawed and insecure by design? - xunilmac, on 07/24/2008, -1/+0I like the Flying Window.
Actually the last Windows version to use the old logo was a Beta version of Windows XP. I think the logo was changed in Beta 2 to look like it does today.
- zephyr42, on 07/20/2008, -4/+59Windows ME was the last one.
- Iztikeit, on 07/20/2008, -71/+211MAC users must be idiots or something......
- RadioFreeOpium, on 07/20/2008, -36/+8good one...
- grimfandango, on 07/20/2008, -138/+19I use a Mac, and I guarantee I'm smarter than you. *****.
- Kypt, on 07/20/2008, -15/+110Yup, damm all of you that use MAC addresses on your network cards! Oh, wait... :)
- crowbar77, on 07/20/2008, -27/+9Did you just seriously spell it like MAC?
- schoate09, on 07/20/2008, -25/+8So you call yourself an idiot. Your internet equipment has a Media Access Control Address.
- Iztikeit, on 07/20/2008, -15/+47Can't be much smarter if Windows confounds you. Heaven forbid you have to think about or do MINOR tweaking or programming.
If you think this comic aptly demonstrates the differences (or lack thereof) then YOU ARE A ***** MORON. There's no point in further discussing it. - falafelkiosken, on 07/20/2008, -15/+23are you an idiot for wanting stuff to work so you can focus on the real task? I think not
- Iztikeit, on 07/20/2008, -17/+64Windows doesn't work? For a second I thought I hadn't had a serious problem with Windows in over 15 years. (except ME and Vista, but XP, 98 and 95 were all great products)
No, you aren't an idiot for selecting a Mac or "wanting stuff to work" you are an idiot for believing Apple's advertising department.
PC = Personal Computer
What is a Mac? Here's a hint, it's not any different.
It has a central processor, memory, HD, video processor, sound processor, motherboard and many other essential components I'm not going to bother to mention.
The difference? Software. Believe it or not but Macs crash and have the same problems as any other computer.
It's just that Macs don't trust the consumer enough to know the difference between their ass and a program. - aDJsavedmylife, on 07/20/2008, -17/+28I love the extreme power of the Windows Command line...
Oh wait it can't do *****.
Bash is better in every single way. - JoeDiggsIt, on 07/20/2008, -15/+11Grimfandango,
I use a mac and I guarantee your still a douchenozzle. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 07/20/2008, -9/+24If you understood BASH a little better you'd know that it supports less commands and functionality then Windows Command Line.
BASH has a whole bunch of separate programs written by different people which BASH relies on for each command. Most of those functions are built into Windows Command Line.
If you don't know, or care to know all you will see is BASH being able to do a lot more. But it's not really BASH at all. If you removed those programs, you wouldn't be able to even rename a file in BASH. - czarr, on 07/20/2008, -13/+7@MacSuxWindozS: I think you miss the point. BASH provides the minimum functions to have an operable terminal. When you try to include the tools into the terminal itself you're really just limiting its usefulness. What windows put into one, unchangable .exe, BASH has read from your PATH, where you can put whatever functions you find useful.
So to reiterate, Windows Command Line is actually limiting you by including these things. - ventralnet, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8@aDJsavedmylife I think the point is the typical user can use windows without ever dealing with a shell screen.
Should also note that bash has 0 commands, they are all separate programs people have wrote 'rm' 'mv' 'cp' yup those are programs also - Dracusis, on 07/20/2008, -1/+14So much ***** over an image?
I think you're all stupid. - Iztikeit, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1MAC
- rocksouljah, on 07/21/2008, -6/+2@MacSuxWindozSux
BASH (or most other linux/unix etc. shells i'm sure) is awesome, in that you can add any functionality to it that you'll need. Its expandable, where as the windows' command line can only do what it was originally programmed to do, and nothing more. - grumpyrain, on 07/21/2008, -3/+2So much nonsense here.
BASH is much more powerful "out of the box" than the command prompt emulator in Windows. This is primarily because Microsoft has focused almost solely on the GUI since Win95 made its debut. That said, you can write programs to run in the command prompt in the same way you can write them for BASH. It's called a console application, and most IDEs have the ability to compile it. You can pipe and pass data around between console apps in the same way.
Powershell is pretty interesting though.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Powershell
Think passing objects and having access to the entire .NET assembly accessible through a scripting shell. - ADINSX, on 07/21/2008, -5/+0@MacSuxWindozSux
BASH is not a whole bunch of different programs, it is one program. BASH is designed to be a shell to access other programs, not be it's own complete operating system. Do one thing, and do it well. Maybe when you've actually taken a CS course, you'll understand that.
- abrooks, on 07/20/2008, -59/+9Seems your an idiot MAC = Media Access Control
Mac = Macintosh.
Just saying.- sulf, on 07/20/2008, -1/+67Your = possessive form of you. You're = you are. Just saying.

- scratched, on 07/20/2008, -3/+37If you've read "In the Beginning Was the Command Line" it talks about operating systems using a very similar analogy.
Linux is a tank that is given away for free. The Linux dealership has all of the tanks lined up out front with the keys in the ignition. The problem is, you have to learn how to drive a tank. If you want, there are plenty of people at the dealership willing to help you learn, the problem is they're creepy looking and no one wants a weirdo teaching them how to drive a tank.
It's a pretty awesome essay. If you have time I'd suggest you read it. It's free online:

- Smills, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1A Mac would be a Segway. It works easily, but is no-where near as practical as a car (windows: it does what you want but breaks down often and has heaps of different parts that tend to have irritating behaviors), or a unicycle (linux: does what you want once you learn how to use it).
- marx2k, on 07/20/2008, -5/+101The kind no one drives.

- PleaseJustDie, on 07/20/2008, -1/+24Aenima: Its because 32bytes is assuming that the Spyder mispelled often to offon, and then the opposite of often is never, but mispelled novor.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 07/20/2008, -15/+4Learn some logic, always is the opposite of never. Often is the opposite of 'Often Not'.
And thanks for killing the joke. - Iztikeit, on 07/21/2008, -3/+8They didn't mention that behind the switch was what appeared to be a program written for 10 year olds.
- supermanred, on 07/20/2008, -72/+9It isn't about simplicity, you've clearly missed the point of the whole image.
It's about not having to run antivirus, update it, clear up a registry editor, surf the web for 2 hours to find out why every ***** folder in your windows xp computer is set to read only, etc....
What is behind the off / on counts a great deal, and in OS X's case it's the most beautifully written UNIX operating system ever. The code is so clean and polished, and with the same powered computer (try an intel Mac and run a bunch of OSes...you'll see...) OS X outperforms them all.- Hellothere123, on 07/20/2008, -4/+36http://sekhon.berkeley.edu/macosx/
Just look at the graphs, Linux outperforms OS X. - MetricMike, on 07/20/2008, -8/+41And in the event that your wonderful, god-sent Mac does break there's no chance of you fixing it. Just buy a new one because it'll be cheaper and less of a hassle than the repair costs. Thank you, I like being able to service my computers as I'm the one who would best know what's wrong with them - not some technician in California.
Also, most Linux distributions take OS X over the knee. stfu, n00b. kthxbye. - DarkJesus, on 07/20/2008, -1/+27You've seen the code?
- ClockworksNine, on 07/20/2008, -3/+35Wow, you are trying REALLY hard to reach the pedestal called "Steve Jobs' *****-Sucker"
- denizen42, on 07/20/2008, -2/+30Windows XP has now become a very stable, reliable os. My registry remains unbloated and minimalistic, because I don't go installing frivolous new software every week.
I don't clog my system with a bulky antivirus and my computer isn't infected, yet I download terabytes of stuff, play games and have access to endless software. Using a good firewall along with the 'other' approach to avoiding viruses works much better, i.e. the brilliant 'white list' approach, which requires very little computer resources and only an occasional (manual, online) virus scan. Sure this is not mainstream but it's the best option under the sun. - AchaIemoipas, on 07/20/2008, -2/+41Really?
What I saw is someone who can build a car with any cheap parts from any source, old or new, and a retard who needs a fool-proof lock on the hood so he won't break everything. And of course, dresses like a sissy. - mrsteveman1, on 07/20/2008, -12/+3That benchmark is about the memory allocator, the default one on OS X is slower for some reason but i think they did have a reason. In any case your own link shows that using a good allocator on OS X makes it just as fast. "There is no difference in performance between Linux and the OS X code when dmalloc is used. "
You can't really repair most parts on a laptop either, because thats what most Macs are, laptop parts. Mini is almost entirely laptop parts, iMac is basically a laptop in one case.
And Linux....yea. Linux is great for servers, not so much desktops. - mediaphile, on 07/20/2008, -16/+5@denizen42:
The difference is, I have no _need_ for any of that. Good 3rd party security solutions are no match for inherent OS security.
Apple computers are not for people who want a cheap solution they can build themselves. It's a completely different market. You can't build a Ferrari out of spare parts either. - denizen42, on 07/20/2008, -2/+16My spare parts aren't cheap, I buy the very best of components, and still pay three times less than the apple counterparts, which by the way, are mostly the same parts nowadays! Furthermore, this isn't like cars, you can indeed build a Ferrari (and beyond) with spare parts. Third, your so-called 'inherent' security comes at a cost, you're limited to a handful of choices, which is overall the weakest point for OSx. I do respect OSX but for some people, customizeability is the most attractive advantage.
- cannarymburns, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6@denizen42, exactly. mac uses oem parts, so in reality pc enthusiasts are the only ones who are building "Ferraris". Under the hood, macs are the same cheapest possible crap that can pass off for its spec as dell or hp. do any of them run premium memory, high end cooling, motherboards that came with tons of features, and the ability to do whatever you please with what you buy? sorry, but mac users have to realize, that our freedom is not for debate... you won't prove to us that your turtle neck wearing deity knows what we want better than we do.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/20/2008, -3/+3Man, there are a bunch of little bitches on Digg.
Macs are mostly PC parts, even the firmware is technically a modified intel EFI implementation apparently. The motherboards are made by some chinese company, the cases are typically aluminum now and fairly custom. Thats what a Mac is, a form factor customized PC, running OS X. Thats it. Now, little fanboys on both sides of the bitch fight need to cool it.

- 1longtime, on 07/20/2008, -3/+67It did take Apple a decade to add a second mouse button...
- supermansuper, on 07/20/2008, -3/+109You hold the button that is behind the rear right passenger seat and press the pedal at the same time. It works as a brake. Its easy if you know how!
- thinkdifferent, on 07/20/2008, -26/+4A better analogy would be hold down the horn button & turn the steering wheel to turn on the turn signal... that's the right click. Or you could just click the turn signal stalk (menu option). The problem is in windows, you'd only be able to use the turn signal in that manner. On a Mac, you can if you want use the horn & steering wheel to turn on your turn signal (though that's disabled by default), but the menu option (turn signal stalk) would always be there.

Jesus Christ! How do people complain about a right click? Is it THAT hard to hold down 'control' while clicking? If pressing the little key on the bottom-left of the keyboard is too much work, you probably have bigger worries than right-clicking.....

The one button thing is ***** stupid, as are people who make excuses for it. Apple gets a lot of things right, but it's not sacrilege against Father Steve to admit when they get something completely wrong.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4Apple decided most people couldn't handle the idea of right clicking, and for some people they are right, i've seen plenty of idiots who don't get it. On the other hand, the majority of users can learn easily, so the refusal to implement a 2 button mouse, going so far as to implement this touch shell crap with the mighty mouse, is ridiculous. They went too far to try and not be like the PC here, lots of mac users don't even bother using the one that came with the machine and but Microsoft mice.

There's also the single button for left click. - hamobu, on 07/20/2008, -11/+385Also notice that in windows car you can easily see and replace battery, while in apple car you have to take it to the shop and they charge you $89
- mathben, on 07/20/2008, -53/+3...So this detatchable little thing on the backside of my macbook isn't a battery then? Noone mentioned the iPhone, guess that's what you meant.

- loun88, on 07/20/2008, -2/+21and the ipod? oh right. no one cares.
- Pulch, on 07/20/2008, -1/+40Way to miss the point, he wasn't talking about a battery, he was saying something as simple as taking out a battery in a car wouldn't be allowed in this artists rendition of a Mac, whereas taking the battery out of the PC (or doing any easy to hard maintenance) is very doable without voiding anything and dealing with company specific parts.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/20/2008, -19/+2Desktops don't even have batteries, and the laptops they make are all removable. iPods are the exception, they sacrificed user serviceability for smaller design, same with the iPhone. I have an old HP iPaq pocket pc that is the same way, battery is soldered to the main board.
- pnyphnz, on 07/20/2008, -3/+25IT'S A ***** METAPHOR.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/20/2008, -8/+2Yea, one that makes little sense, thats the point. Most macs are laptops in a desktop case, thats why you can't replace everything.
- keenfrenzy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4@mrsteveman1
Aside from the obvious (and several times re-established) fact that it was a metaphor and that he didn't mean a literal PC battery, you fail with the quote "Desktops don't even have batteries."
Most modern desktop computers use a coin-cell (typically a CR2032 3v Lithium).
For more information, please read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonvolatile_BIOS_memo ... - mrsteveman1, on 07/21/2008, -8/+2***** hell, you don't change out bios batteries at any regular interval, the PC usually dies first. In any case, the metaphor is completely ridiculous, there are PCs that are just as non-serviceable because they are made just like Macs, with integrated parts that can't be screwed with or replaced, so no, this isn't a ***** metaphor, nor does it actually illustrate any inherent difference between Macs and PCs, i can find you a number of PCs you can't replace the parts on, and I can find you hundreds of examples of Macs in the past and 2 in the present that are just as upgradable as PCs are.
It's a ***** argument.
You want to bash Apple you can do better, like Apples ***** up policy of refusing to comment on problems until they are (barely) fixed, or deciding what hardware people want without giving any real choice. There are no blu-ray drives Apple provides, you can add one to any Mac but Apple won't do it for you or ship one.
Another example? Apple barely supports their own hardware sometimes, i have an aluminum keyboard they made that still doesn't work before the OS boots. Its a critical bug they refuse to fix apparently.
So yea, as a metaphor, the battery thing is a complete fail.

I could have gotten it a little cheaper online, but I didn't want to wait 1-2 days to get my PC back up.
- RadioFreeOpium, on 07/20/2008, -21/+11a more accurate image would have the PC as a "ricer": a cheap import that people trick out with many after-market parts, and if you don't know what you're doing then it won't start. The mac would be a BMW or some other high end car that is very expensive, and a lot of the money is paying for the name, but it looks much nicer and it has a smoother ride. Its all about choice. I own both, my desktop is a PC my laptop is a macbook pro.
- marx2k, on 07/20/2008, -9/+3Well if you're talking about general consumer PCs, the car would actually be something closer to a Geo Metro (Acer) or a monstrous SUV that the driver uses just to go get groceries and pick up the kids (E-Mail and web browsing). Of course, there'd be some riced out PCs, but they'd be in the minority and be just as annoying as riced out cars, both of which have owners who crave attention.

- ferrariman60, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3I think my pc would be a little more than a ricer. Mine is also much less obnoxious, and not as in your face, as a ricer. So I don't really know what you're talking about. I do know that if we stick to the metaphor, I can make a complete engine and drivetrain swap myself, and the mac is sealed beyond the on/off button. Mine's faster, cheaper, may not be as pretty, but it can outrun macs like they're nothing.

From Wikipedia:
In an October 22, 1996, address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Pope John Paul II updated the Church's position to accept evolution of the human body:
"In his encyclical Humani Generis (1950), my predecessor Pius XII has already affirmed that there is no conflict between evolution and the doctrine of the faith regarding man and his vocation..." - bjornski, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Which is good that they're so accepting of things that aren't in the bible.

Evangelicals accept the Pope? - bjornski, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I was making reference to the Pope/Catholic Church accepting evolution quote that was mentioned by inane.
I was raised Protestant, with no love for the Pope or a central hierarchy as they've built around him. Or any love for "saints" or any of the other oogity-boogity ***** they tout.
Lots of goofy beliefs, none of them in the Bible. The Catholic Church is the "Church of Man", not of God. I wasn't getting into any of the other sects of Christianity, again, only referencing inane's comments about Pope John Paul talking about Pope Pius.
Again, any Pope who wants to disregard something because "it's not in the Bible" is explaining why he doesn't deserve his post.
That's all I was getting at.
- jellygraph, on 07/20/2008, -20/+30Windows is the car with all those wires. It promises the world, but, when it breaks, its pretty useless and usually the only you can do is replace the engine and try again. Its safety track record is very poor. Most people die in Windows cars, due to the fact that random people are able to open it up and put ***** in it even when you are driving it. Wheels may (and will) also fall off at random.
Linux is the car that has all those wires and lets you fix it or improve it while it is still driving reliably. Also, you got it for free. It's got a teflon coating on to protect you. It's been built on the experience of many wise men and lots of real world testing, but the instruction manual requires that you learn a little bit about how the car works.
Mac is the car that runs reliably and is simple to use (no manual, just an on switch), but when it gets a scratch, you get very annoyed, because you are so used to the convenience and it cost you a lot of money.
At the end of the day, you should choose between Linux and Mac. Users of Windows cars want to throw away their cars and use a better one, but are unable to do so, because of some minor reason, like their expensive car stereo doesn't work on a Mac or Linux, and, in most cases, their local car dealers have made a deal not to sell or promote Macs and especially not Linux. Everyone loses.- hark659, on 07/20/2008, -3/+8Nice
- arnoldez, on 07/20/2008, -7/+5I'm gona have to disagree... If anything, Everything you said of the Windows machine in the last paragraph relates more to the Mac. Every part in my current computer will work in a Windows or a Linux machine, and I can replace any part without hesitation for a small price without needing to replace anything else (unless I require a more extensive upgrade, i.e. I need more PCI slots than I currently have). However, with Mac, I have to buy Mac parts, have it serviced by a Mac "genius" at the "genius bar" (aka "pretentious bar"), and run Mac software on it. All of which come with a hefty Mactax. I prefer Windows over Mac any day. Don't know much about Linux, but seems pretty usable. Mac makes great machines for the rich, simple-minded user, but they are incredibly incompatible, and Apple is absolutely ruining the computer and digital media industry with their proprietary *****. Opening a Mac voids your warranty, You have to buy Mac parts for your Mac computer, Current-gen iPods require accessory designers to pay 10% of their products directly to Apple so they can include the otherwise-unnecessary silicon chip in their USB/AV cables (literally their only purpose...all other iPods, including iPod video, did not require this chip), Apple has re-written the .av file format to only work with Macs, and wtf is this .mp4 *****?

> You have to buy Mac parts for your Mac computer
Incorrect. Macs are comprised almost entirely of 3rd party parts, just like any computer. These parts are very rarely proprietary.
It's silly to propagate lies that are so easily refuted with some quick Google searches, and it makes you seem a bit uneducated when you spout these "facts" around people who know better. - Burn, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3@arnoldez
1. What are 'Mac Parts' exactly? As has been stated already, Macs just use normal Intel and compatible parts. I have upgraded the memory and twice upgraded the hard drive in my MacBook Pro and every time with standard parts.
2. I agree with you there, and if it wasn't for the fact that I believe that Mac OS is the best OS available at the moment, I would not be buying their products based on practices like this.
3. I don't know what .mp4 is in reality but it appears on a lot of craptastic Chinese MP3 players and generally indicated that the player supports AAC, but obviously that has nothing to do with Apple.
Apple use the industry standard .m4a which works with everything supporting AAC (Not just Macs), and .m4p is their encrypted version of that format (Which also plays on any type of computer, just as long as that computer can run QuickTime...again not Mac specific). - sculptedguns, on 07/21/2008, -4/+0shut the ***** up
- jellygraph, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I used to be a Mac hater. I used to think that all mac users were fanantic zealots (ok, some are, nut its a very small minority). But after I gave up on Windows after being loyal for over 10 years, I tried Linux and realized that it was awesome, fast and reliable. Then, after a few years, my company offered to give me a new laptop, I chose an Apple, because I had never played around with one. Well, after havign a MacBook for a few months, I honestly think that all Windows users are wating their time with Vista and ought to buy a Mac instead. I'm perfectly happy with that scenario. Ideally I would prefer Linux, but Linux isn't quite there yet for the user experience. (oh so close, and yet, not quite there : )

- solesoul, on 07/20/2008, -120/+2513This is exactly right. PC is just like the car that can be fixed by you, your dad, that guy down the street, and in drastic cases, any repair shop around. Mac is like the car that requires even the simplest repairs to be done by "certified" repair shops or directly at the dealer, both of whom drive up the price as much as possible.
- WiseWeasel, on 07/20/2008, -197/+32Is that why I always see the long lines of people needing their Windows computers "cleaned" at Circuit City and Best Buy? If you know what you're doing in UNIX, you can mess with OS X to your heart's content. Mac hardware uses industry-standard parts, and you can swap parts and upgrade as much as you want. About the only thing you *can't* do is buy a mobo and build a (supported) Mac from scratch. It's just the fake Windows "geeks" that think Macs can't be tinkered with.
- Dumbledorito, on 07/20/2008, -2/+63I see long lines at CC and BB for returns of everything they sell. There's no line at the service center because that's not how it works.

Apples on the other hand require you to dismantle the entire machine, thereby increasing your cost beyond the purchase of a new machine.

- NLS87, on 07/20/2008, -28/+2Linux may be interesting if you are a geek.
Mac OS X is interesting if you are a geek, or if you are "ordinary" computer user.
Linux may seem awesome, but on reality, it requires more effort to make it run propely (even on simple distros like Ubuntu) than what it rewards the user. And it even doesn't match up to FreeBSD, which, in my opinion, is the best OS out there if you have the time for it and the passion for computers...
Mac OS X is like something in the beetwen, it has everything that UNIX-based OS have, it is easiest, it's the most beautifull and there's a lot of realy COOL comercial and free applications.
Windos Vista is just right for everyone, but it's sooooo square, OS X is awesome from every point of view, and Mac's are so cute and have the best quality in personal computer's market. They are in a different championship, they don't have to care for competition.
One does not realy care if it is a Dell, a HP, a Sony, etc... they are all ok, it's the "best bang for the buck championship"
On the other hand, Macintoshes are chosen for coinoisers and hearth-driven buyers.
My laptop broke, I had to buy a computer, I didn't even compare prices, specifications, etc... I just got the MacBook.
Why? It's a computer, does everything I do, for gamming, I have my powerfull PC in my room, and my Nintendo Wii for fun. Then, I don't have much time for gamming and computer games suck! - PokerGigolo, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1The reason most users haven't made the jump to OSX is that the jump is so wildly, unnecessarily expensive that they can't justify it. Remember, your average user wants to surf the web and read email. You can do both of those things out of the box with a PC or a Mac, so why spend three times as much as you need to for hardware?
Plus, do we really want the majority of the computer-using world to be pretentious, self-involved assholes? I know I don't.

Why would I want to wait 6 months or whatever the warranty period is just to upgrade a hard drive?
Does apple just not trust its users with anything aftermarket except memory? - exscape, on 07/20/2008, -3/+4Uh... Would Dell or HP let you disassemble it and rebuilt it from scratch? You're acting as if Apple is the only bad guy here. If anything, all laptop producers are, although I think it's reasonable, since a majority of computer users in fact would break something.
Oh, and do you really think service is dirt cheap for other brands, or what? - TheDowntownKing, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2I'm pretty sure the repairs that this user is referring to are far more complex than simply replacing a hard drive or adding some RAM. The most basic computer user knows how to operate a screwdriver and plug things in the only place that they fit.
- zephyr42, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Did I ever say I wanted to fully "disassemble" and "rebuild" a new computer I bought from dell or hp??
no. I did not actually. - badjoke, on 07/20/2008, -4/+1Why should apple continue its warranties on products that it didn't check, or install?
It's like asking a car company continue to fix your car free of charge after adding a turbocharger, and a bunch of other aftermarket parts yourself. What if you did it wrong? Why should they pay to fix it? - zephyr42, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2badjoke: /facepalm
If I added a turbocharger to the car, duh that would be bad, that would equate to adding water cooling a mac, not adding memory. Using your analogy I would consider it replacing the exhaust or air filter on your car with better parts. This does not in fact change a warranty on a car (i know it doesn't on mine)

- mclaincausey, on 07/20/2008, -31/+21I'm afraid this is an inaccurate position. Macs have used industry standard hardware architecture for some time now. On most models, you can add or replace hardware yourself. The memory, hard drives, expansion bus, and even processors are the same today as you would find in a typical PC. Some models, such as the lovely PowerMac, are extremely easy for end users to service, with very forward-thinking and elegant designs under the skin.
Having tighter control of the hardware, which Apple does have, simplifies the validation and verification processes and does provide some benefits. Of course there are trade-offs, but Apple hardware in my experience has been more reliable than that of the Big 3, outside of the server space (I haven't used Xserves).- drikle, on 07/20/2008, -4/+10There goes the guarantee

- consonance, on 07/20/2008, -27/+13"This is exactly right. PC is just like the car that can be fixed by you, your dad, that guy down the street, and in drastic cases, any repair shop around."
That's utterly ridiculous. I've used a PC my whole life, and it's just not true. The average person can NOT fix a PC. If they could, viruses would be such a problem and computers would last for years and years at a time. You are blatantly ignoring the wealth of how-to-fix-a-PC tutorials that are online, because there are so many problems out there that people don't know how to fix. Searching 'how to fix a PC' on Google returns 87 million results. Whether the problems be with the drivers or software, it's not like Windows is the perfect platform. Sometimes there are troubles so problematic that only an experienced technician can fix them. How about when the wireless printer driver you're trying to install won't install properly and the driver installer can't see the printer, even when the rest of your network can see it? How about getting around the faulty installer using the command line and manually opening up a parallel port? I've seen it happen.
It's nice to say that the most drastic repairs can take place at repair shops, but often they hire kids in high school, and they are designed more for selling replacement computer parts than for fixing your problems.
Now, I won't pretend that the Mac platform has no such problems and never stops working. That's a fairy tale, but saying that just about anyone could fix a PC is a fairy tale, too.- BobMysterioso, on 07/20/2008, -1/+13Are viruses such an issue anymore? Is spyware really that common of a threat these days?
When I graduated college 6 years ago (i'm feeling old now) spyware was everywhere. It was on everything and routinely many friends called me to declutter their boxes. Nowadays, even my dad seems to be spyware free - and I dont' want to tell you the amount of spyware he used to harbor.
Seriously, this is a real question. Are viruses and spyware (2 separate issues I know) such a problem anymore? - KB925902, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6I've been on Windows since I was 4, the closest thing to a virus I've ever gotten was Norton.
But, this maybe surprising to people at digg, so please sit down, away from the populous of digg, not everyone knows about computers. College educated people in my school know less about computers than the special education class, but don't complain. People like that give jobs for people like us.
- BobMysterioso, on 07/20/2008, -1/+13Are viruses such an issue anymore? Is spyware really that common of a threat these days?
- elveis, on 07/20/2008, -36/+31That statement is flawed in so many ways. The majority of Mac users can fix the simple things themselves or know somebody else that can help. I can fix my own "car" or my dad's or the guy's down the street. If there is a major hardware problem and your Mac is under Apple Care it doesn't cost a thing to have it repaired. My first Mac lasted 7 years without a problem and this one is going on three without a single hiccup.
And swapping hard drives or upgrading ram, video cards etc. is not some unsolvable mystery like all PC users make it out to be - no different than doing it on a PC.- GREEDOnvrFIRED, on 07/20/2008, -7/+10It IS different. Its easier. I cannot speak for what it takes to get a mac repaired because in 22yrs of owning them I have never had occasion to seek repairs.
- nomik2, on 07/20/2008, -8/+9...and by 'doesn't cost a thing', you mean, you have to pay for Apple Care.

Every computer I've owned (Mac and non-Mac) has been serviced for free (including shipping) during the warranty period. - BlackCow, on 07/20/2008, -2/+8Doing stuff with your hardware dosn't necessarily mean its broken. For example, I wanted to upgrade to a PCI-E card from AGP and put in a Core Duo, so I put in a new motherboard. It is basically a new computer by that point but 10x cheaper then a buying a brand new Mac.
- unitedatheism, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1They can fix a lot of things.
Wallpaper, startup sound, mouse cursor (I hope, not sure) and some other... Power to the people! - SlipperyFox, on 07/20/2008, -7/+3^ New macs are such a ripoff. NOT TO MENTION THE GAMING DEFICIENCY!
To go with the metaphor... the Mac car has a huge switch to turn it on, in case your retarded, and goes 0-60mph in 5 minutes - WileEPeyote, on 07/20/2008, -2/+5I remember back in the 92 or 93, I worked at a college so of course we had some Macs.
In order to replace parts or even tighten some part inside we needed a special screwdriver that was much longer than anything you could normaly purchase.
Then we found out we couldn't order replacement parts anywhere unless we sent someone to get a certification, then we could only order parts from a specific distributor. It really screwed out budget, so we eneded up not purchasing any new Macs except for some media classes.
What a pain in the ass. - arnoldez, on 07/20/2008, -2/+0@ GREEDOnvrFIRED
Try buying a new one...one built with standard PC components but for twice the price because of the software "bundle." - BetaRaySam, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2Also i am not so sure "hardware problems" are what we are talking about. (See the Linux comment above.) Most hardware changes or repairs are as easy as pulling out a pretty standard part and replacing it. Hooray you have mastered basic shape recognition! I think the commentary is applied to software design as well. In which case windows may have more consistent problems but they can be consistently fixed and improved by the user, almost as well as Linux...
- Bkaufman, on 07/20/2008, -11/+52Except all the parts are twice as expensive.
- michaelz92, on 07/20/2008, -14/+4No, they're the exact same price as windows components, because they're the exact same thing.
- SlipperyFox, on 07/20/2008, -3/+13and when its time to upgrade.... you can buy a brand new over priced computer all over again!
and don't worry, 6 months after you've bought yours, the new model is going to come out... in a new color... and with the 1 extra feature they were holding out on you - KMartSheriff, on 07/20/2008, -5/+2Your ignorance is amazing.
- Drexus, on 07/20/2008, -19/+6"PC is just like the car that can be fixed by you, your dad, that guy down the street"
Boy, I'm glad aircraft manufactures are not the same as the PC manufactures. "Good morning, this is your captain speaking. Could we all get out and push again... it didn't catch this time."- willynilly, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11That makes no sense at all. Furthermore, pilots know quite a bit about the components of their plane and inspect them personally before every flight. They are also allowed to make repairs.
A better comparison would be a car with standard vs. automatic transmission. When the battery on a car with standard transmission dies, you can push-start it. Not so with the automatic. Which do you think would be the Mac?

- sab0tage, on 07/20/2008, -9/+209I was just thinking the Mac "driver" looks like a pretentious *****.
- KMartSheriff, on 07/20/2008, -9/+3And the Windows "driver"? He looks better to you?
- fuzzymuzzy, on 07/20/2008, -0/+9He does To me
- teekay87, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1yea the Mac car must be based on the BMW M3 then?
- Handonam, on 07/20/2008, -13/+5bravo. well done, well done.
- ATLien74, on 07/20/2008, -18/+11I found it rather simple to replace the HD in my Powerbook and the DVD-Drive in my MacBook.
- unitedatheism, on 07/20/2008, -6/+10Yeah, just called apple, told them what you wanted and gave your credit card number!
"Because this works!" - carpespasm, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5I'm with you. I had to replace the hard drive and optical drive in an old 12" powerbook for a friend about a year ago and though figuring out how to get it open was a pain without instructions, once I found a disassembly guide, it was pretty easy, hard to screw up connectors, and was obviously better designed than any of the HP, Compaq, or Toshiba laptops I've had to dig through 4 layers of paper thin PCB to get to a stick of ram that was inside the machine on the bottom of the motherboard (bottom layer) that didn't have an access door over it. Replacing a hard drive or either stick of ram in a macbook is dead simple. 3 screws and they eject from the edge of the battery hollow.
Say what you will about the price of a mac, it's warranted, but when you've worked on both some you do see some of the designers at apple put a lot of thought into their hardware layouts. Windows machines usually feel jumbled by comparison. - ATLien74, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1No unitedatheism, I called Seagate (who makes the hard drive) and they sent me a replacement for free which I installed myself, and yes it does work just fine.... unlike your pile of ***** windows pc.
- unitedatheism, on 07/20/2008, -6/+10Yeah, just called apple, told them what you wanted and gave your credit card number!
- kawaiirobo, on 07/20/2008, -16/+9I've been able to fix any problem that has arisen on my mac since I bought it, it's not really all that complicated, and what your saying is just caused by ignorance. If you hand a pc to a person that's never used a computer they couldn't fix it, but after a little tinkering and research they probably could figure out what's wrong. It's the same with a Mac, sure not everyone can fix them, but most people don't have any experience with them. Once you've used one for a while it's just as easy to repair as a windows machine. Also, almost everyone can fix a pc because they eff up more often and require more people to know how to fix them. Sure, we can't slap any part we want into our boxes, but the trade off is that we generally have a much more stable platform, it's a trade off that some people are wiling to make, and some are not. No platform is perfect weather it's widows, osx, or linux, and it comes down to simple preferences and personal taste. I guess I just don't understand what all the bickering is about.
- SlipperyFox, on 07/20/2008, -5/+3SOUNDS LIKE AN ARGUMENT FOR COMMUNISM
- DickyT83, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Depressing to type up all of that only to be buried.
- adn6691, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2thank you.
- HoratioHellpop, on 07/21/2008, -1/+0//I've been able to fix any problem that has arisen on my mac since I bought it//
except for how to create paragraphs by striking the "Enter" key. - kawaiirobo, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Wooh, Horatio, you got me there, I though I was typing a comment not a paragraph in a dissertation, but since your obviously the grammar Nazi around here I'll make sure to type all of my comments exactly as you would have them formatted. Please forgive me.
- roflbrothel, on 07/20/2008, -21/+8Sorry, but if you can't figure out how to fix a Mac, you're a ***** idiot.
- unitedatheism, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2If you know, that's because you have one, you're a ***** überidiot.
- McKoKslarge, on 07/20/2008, -9/+23oh and btw if you want to fix that on/off switch on the nice mac car, its going to cost at least ten thousand dollars plus labor. Enjoy!!!
- Emelius, on 07/20/2008, -16/+98Do you see the smirk on that Mac guy's face? See how hes all like 'LOL IM A DOUCHEBAG', thats every mac user. Even though Mac doesn't have even the slightest competitive edge over PC when it comes to the business department (which is why PC has 93% of all shares).
You ask yourself, why does it have such a big edge? Well, do you see that engine on that car in that picture? It probably cost $2000. Well, I can build a PC that cost $600 that is just as powerful. And guess what? we can CHOOSe what we want it to look like, what we want to put in it, how we want it to work, what specifications we decide upon, and how much it costs down to the very last penny.
Mac is just for little kids who dont know how to run an operating system or dont want to put together their own machine for 1/3 the price.- clak, on 07/20/2008, -25/+11Macs are for kids? Dude, I was a Windows user for ten years and used to build my own computers before switching to the Mac. My preference was Asus motherboards, ATI video cards, AMD processors and Western Digital hard drives, if you think I'm lying.
50 percent of the new Mac users are former Windows users. Are you saying we instantly become childish douchebags when we decide to buy a Mac? - SlipperyFox, on 07/20/2008, -9/+8@clak... maybe blunt force trauma?
and did we mention Mac's Gaming Deficiency!? - clak, on 07/20/2008, -16/+4@SlipperyFox
That's why Macs have boot camp. I have an XP partition, which I use to play Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2. I don't use it for anything else. If Valve ever ports Steam for OS X, Windows would be the first thing I delete.
Of course, CodeWeavers has made an OS X app called Crossover Games. It's still a bit buggy, but it lets you run Counter-Strike, Half-Life 2, Team Fortress without Windows. I might go that route after a couple more revisions. - Dachublez, on 07/20/2008, -6/+18@clak
I don't have to dual boot OS's to play video games. I don't understand why mac fanboi's think needing to boot into a separate OS to play games is a feature. Then yo
