My iPod Touch is part iPhone?
i11.tinypic.com — Apparently apple takes the time to remove functional code like allowing you to input calendar events but doesn't bother to change the "iPhone is disabled" text shown when you lock your iPod and fail to type in the right password.

- TunaFishGangsta, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I didn't digg down just because crazymofo is confirming the bug repro. Besides, did you really expect someone who calls themself crazymofo to make a lot of sense?
- FrankT, on 10/10/2007, -15/+127that's so funny :-)
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -33/+8And yet, so boring. It should surprise nobody that they re-used as much code as they could.
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32it's not the reuse of the code that's funny. it's forgetting to change something.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -23/+5Oh right they forgot to change something ...
"lol"- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10are you saying they left that on purpose?

sed 's/iPhone/iPod/g'- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They have sed on OSX?
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Of course they do. I'm pretty sure every modern operating system has sed in /bin... except maybe that weird one that Redmond makes.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They have sed on OSX?
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I doubt they're coding the iPhone's OS on a PC.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, Apple does use Darwin on PCs for some things. They even have some products like a Qucktime streaming server for Darwin.

- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's fine to reuse code, but it can be pretty embarassing if you forget to change the output text.

- dyranios2, on 10/10/2007, -14/+228Shoddy work from apple, shame the only tweaking to the software they did was to remove features rather then actually change stuff that didn't belong there.
Don't worry Calendar, little guy we're working on it!- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -14/+26Alright, I hate to be an Apple apologist in light of an actual screw up, but if the worst part of the iPod touch is that they missed changing a text field in the UI, while the software still functions fine, I can't really label it "shoddy" or "shameful". Code reuse is standard practice in industry, errors do happen.
- cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -7/+22Great, then why didn't they just reuse the calendar code? Say you wanted to use it as a pda; the device would serve your purposes much better with reused code. People are mad because apple took the time to unnecessarily limit how we can use the device. This is just an instance of how they were lazy and reused where it suited them and changed where it didn't rather than reusing where it suited the customer and changed where it didn't. You can't deny that there was no good reason from the customers point of view for the calender change and no good reason not to make this change. I understand you can't please the entire customer base at once (for instance some people like the flash memory while many wanted a hard disk for more music and videos. Bottom line: the ipod touch would have been a better device without changes such as the calender one, yet apple spent time changing that and not this.
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10They didn't want to cannibalize their iPhone sales by making the touch have too many iPhone features.
For consumers it sucks but from a business standpoint it makes perfect sense. Apple would rather you buy an iPhone than a touch. - DivisibleByZero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Is the calendar stored locally, or does it require a network connection? The latter would certainly be a good reason to disable it.
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10They didn't want to cannibalize their iPhone sales by making the touch have too many iPhone features.
- cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4God, digg's comment system keeps deleting parts of my posts. All the paragraph spacing is gone and the end of some of the sentences. Oh well, you get the point.

I gotta go rock a piss now. - ExSlashdotter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've still got the film on mine too. I just used an exacto-knife to cut the little tab that wraps around the bottom. Shazam! perfectly fit screen protector. Luckily mine came stuck on flush without any bubbles though.

you just have to remember that people only post if they have a problem, not if they don't have one - tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yes, that's an issue, but if you don't want to get a phone, you don't really have a choice.

please proceed to chapter 2.- MadOtaku, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7And a script that ran that command on every file would be a gargantuan task, right? Come on, I'm a dumbass and I could write a script that did that if I needed to.
- bitspace, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1It's called "sed". Problem is, the snippet posted above was from vi, and as posted will indeed only work on a single file.
- MadOtaku, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It's a joke man, lighten up. In truth, they probably wouldn't use bash shell scripts (with sed) to do it either. probably awk or perl. So your example isn't much better.
- viper565, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Agreed.
- solinent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You could probably change it with a resource editor? or is that only with old iPod versions?
(if you're really pissed off)

- goodoldharris, on 10/10/2007, -4/+60Why would they get rid of the iCal functionality? That's totally ***** up. The phone functionality alone should be enough to position the products differently. Wake up, Apple. The iPod touch could the PDA that a lot of Mac owners are waiting for. But you're ***** it up.
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -19/+6or you could just get a proper PDA
- sjbdallas, on 10/10/2007, -13/+6Isn't the iPhone a proper PDA already? A proper PDA has a phone, accesses the web, holds all your contacts, and calendar right?
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20no, thats just a normal phone bought anytime within the last decade.
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6With an experience that was only dreamt about in the last decade!
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14A PDA just needs to store your Personal Data. It doesn't NEED a phone or internet access.
- cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4That's a smartphone which is a pda + a phone. So if you take the iphone (which is a smartphone) and take the phone out of it you should get a pda right? Unfortunately apple decided to control how their customers used the device they had purchased and removed iCal functionality from the ipod touch to reduce its usefulness as a pda.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20no, thats just a normal phone bought anytime within the last decade.
- nicksource, on 10/10/2007, -8/+92That's really poor, I would of expected Apple to of tested it a little more. Makes the product look real tacky, sort of thing a Chinese knock-off would do.
- phoomp, on 10/10/2007, -17/+10Apple has a track record of poor QA
- cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Don't digg him down, it's true. In a damn device where they know the battery life is going to slowly deteriorate you still can't replace the damn battery, you have to pay apple 80 to do it (and you lose all your music). That's just a problem every ipod owner knows is comming; the rate these things break at is almost as bad as xbox 360s. Have you not heard all the jokes about how Jobs wants you to buy a new ipod every 2 years? Did you miss that many people don't buy first generation apple devices because they always have issues that don't get fixed till a refresh 6 months later? Stop living under the fanboy rock.
- solinent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1QA is not customer support or reliability or products.

- sjbdallas, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19I think it's kind of interesting that they can re-use the same code on several different platforms w/only relatively minor tweaking. If the OS is that portable, they've really done a good job.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22its the same platform, they have just taken out a tiny chunk of hardware.
you realise this isnt the same OSX that you run on your desktop, the same way that windows mobile isnt really just windows xp- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You'd be surprised... http://daringfireball.net/2007/01/os_x
- imikedaman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28They ported it to the same hardware. Impressive.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's not that interesting, look at GTK+ or Qt, both of them roam to platforms more interesting than this, and both of them have the ability to export all strings into a file that can be updated and translated.
This is a pretty bad oversight on something that could have been done with a grep/sed command.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22its the same platform, they have just taken out a tiny chunk of hardware.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm a little surprised they missed this. I bet it will be changed fairly quickly in an update.

- pixelbud, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Its what happens when you work *too* fast to push something out. Most likely because Steve Jobs is pissed at the cell phone industry lol. ( http://crunchgear.com/2007/09/09/is-steve-jobs-sick-of-the-cell-phone-industry-already/ )
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Huh? Steve jobs is pissed at the cell phone industry, ergo, he rushes the iPod Touch out the door?
I don't follow your logic.

- sych0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13uh, you needed proof that it was just a crippled iphone? Look at the thing.
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2not a crippled iphone, get your facts straight. near identical operating os and highly similar case, but no bluetooth, no gsm, and the wifi got a 11g upgrade. the hardware is much more different to consider it a 'crippled' iphone. despite the UI and operating system they're different hardware. you might as well put a viper body on a toyota and call the toyota a 'crippled viper'
- sasquatchcrotch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Nope it's crippled.
- HalfBrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you take the wireless card out of a desktop.... is it still a desktop? I'm pretty sure it is. It is a desktop w/o a wireless card.
The iPod Touch is an iPhone w/o a Bluetooth radio or a GSM radio
- jakem1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Pretty bad considering that the iPhone is a crippled smartphone.

- boozedrinker, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Good call, gentlemen. I submitted the same complaint to both ;-)
Let's hope this makes them realize they are screwing us iPod Touch people and gets them to unlock some more apps!- afx1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1lay off the booze
- mrmacky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+84Well it's obvious that they were going to reuse the iPhone OS. I just find it kind of funny that they didn't do some kind of search & replace for the word iPhone.
- Nodren, on 10/10/2007, -9/+6probably because their code is littered with functions and variables that have "iphone" in them.
for instance "ShowIphoneKeyboard" might be a function name(just speculation, but typically its a good programming convention to better describe what your function does, especially when your managing a code base with more then one purpose(os x on a iphone, ipod touch, mac, etc)- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Unless it's coded by 5-year-old, the functions and variables shouldn't matter. The user will never see them anyway.
You *never* hardcode text output in the program -- you keep it as a separate resource so you can send it off to translators and such, and that kind of search-and-replace can be done in Notepad.- probrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0notepad...for windows? are you implying that they created the iphone os on windows?
lol...i love you.
- probrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0notepad...for windows? are you implying that they created the iphone os on windows?
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Unless it's coded by 5-year-old, the functions and variables shouldn't matter. The user will never see them anyway.
- Takuro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Even if there were references to functions and variables with the term "iphone" in them, replacing "iphone" with "ipodtouch" would still work as long as every occurrence is replaced.
Eg: (function iphonekeyboard) (reference to iphonekeyboard) becomes (function ipodtouchkeyboard) (reference to ipodtouchkeyboard)
So in a large sense, nothing gets broken.- theprez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2But if the iPhone's code has functions with "iphone" AND "ipod" in them already and you just change all the references of "iphone" to "ipod" you pretty much screw everything up.
- Nodren, on 10/10/2007, -9/+6probably because their code is littered with functions and variables that have "iphone" in them.
- kristerk, on 10/10/2007, -14/+2wow ... "good work apple"
- adamchristopher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10you think those quotations are "really necessary"?
- GeneralGore, on 10/24/2007, -13/+41Maybe because the iTouch is just an overpriced iPhone without a phone?
- DesuKN, on 10/10/2007, -9/+3So the iPhone's weakest feature was worth 200 bucks?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Ever heard this phrase? "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts"
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3...the problem is that, as things are developing, it more and more looks like a $300 iPod + a $200 phone will be a more potent than a $500 all-in-one device. :(
Oh well, Apple's 1.0 devices have always been.. ehmr... quirky. Here's to version 2. ;)
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3...the problem is that, as things are developing, it more and more looks like a $300 iPod + a $200 phone will be a more potent than a $500 all-in-one device. :(
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Weakest 'feature' (that means one)...
this iPhone gives you
1. SMS
2. Calendar addition
3. Camera
4. Widgets
5. Maps
6. Notes
7. A kick ass phone
8. Mail
that is 8 (making it more than one)
I think that makes it worth $100 more (not $200)- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The problem is that, for that same $100, you can get a phone that does all that, *and more* :-/
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Ever heard this phrase? "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts"
- Dankoozy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1but without the whole AT&T&T lock-in thing
- DesuKN, on 10/10/2007, -9/+3So the iPhone's weakest feature was worth 200 bucks?
- kaniz, on 10/10/2007, -18/+9I used to be a big supporter of Apple/iPods - and would recommend an iPod without hesitation to my friends. I used to be very anti-iPod for reasons of "bah, everyone else has one - I dont want to be part of the herd" type mindset, then I got one for Christmas and became a convert and would tell people to not let the "everyone else has one" factor scare them away.
But between changing the iPod so it cant sync to anything other than iTunes, and now shoddy work like this - I can no longer in good concious recommend apple iPod/iPhone/etc type products. I was going to buy a new iPod soon because 2G just isnt enough for me these days - but now I'm looking into other options, and there are better/more feature rich/less locked down/more storage space options available for less cost - it's a bone headed move to go Apple now.
Goes to show life goes in cycles - anti-iPod, to pro-iPod, now back to anti.- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3In all fairness, it always has, and still does say in the system requirements that iTunes is necessary to use your iPod. If you choose to use it with other applications, that's YOUR risk. Either way, it just means you have to wait a few months until work arounds are made on the newest generation.
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yeah it's only officially supported with iTunes for help requests/bug reports, but they didn't actively stop you from using it in other ways in the past.
With this generation of iPods, they're actively trying to stop 3rd party interaction, which doesn't make any sense. It's not going to deliver a better experience, it just pisses off the minority of us who didn't want to use it with iTunes, for whatever personal reason we have. As a Mac and Linux user, 3rd party interaction was a major factor in my purchasing decision, unless a Linux client is released or an easy work around is found, I won't be buying for this generation of iPods.- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0You'll see a workaround soon enough. I've yet to see the 'minority' give up on such a challenge.

- Nodren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4wow you really dont like apple do you? were you really expecting them to completely write from scratch the code for the ipod touch, completely mimiking most of the features from the iphone? dude, you obviously dont know programming. things like object orientation are designed for good code reuse(reusing code==more productivity!!!) all they did was forget to change the name of one little text item and you're ready to call it crap. and thats fine if you dont like it, but i dont see how that is the "end of the world" as your making it seem for an ipod.
ohh and, it wont be long before the linux based mp3 players out there(amarok, etc) figure out the little crypto key they put on the ipod db and fix it. and it probably has more to do with verifying integrity of a music library then locking down the iphone, i've linked up my 4g ipod with amarok before, i totally had to restore it in windows to get it working again... syncing an ipod on linux has never been a really good alternative, and as much as i like linux, their share right now is what, 1.5%? i'd be willing to bet that their might be 10 people tops who own one of the new ipods, and have no access to any windows or mac machine what so ever to conviently sync their ipod- kaniz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh, I dont expect them at all to re-write everything for the iTouch, it makes good sense to re-use what you can where you can. It just seems silly that Apple goes out of its way to remove functionality that has no reason to be removed, yet can't be bothered to replace the string iPhone with iTouch. It just stinks as being a lazy money-grab.

- MasterRex, on 10/10/2007, -9/+0I wonder who'll convert the iTouch to the iPhone. Maybe it's the same unit, stripped OS? Could be a plug+play/flash the OS kind of ordeal. I want R&D to tell me it's not possible, or I might as well just buy an iTouch and try.
Before you say 'omg apple wouldnt let that happen' -- Apple said the same about restricting different phone carriers.- kaniz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well the cellphone capability is largely reliant on the hardware - not the software. Most likely the iTouch does not have all of the hardware components to allow it to be a cellular phone (if it did, the price would be much higher), and apple simply did a shoddy-job at taking the same OS that runs the iPhone and stripping it down for the iTouch.

- drunkenoaf, on 10/10/2007, -16/+12Who hasn't made a typo or forgotten to change something? To go "OMG Apple are lazy bastards because when they cut down the iPhone to make the iPod touch they forgot to change a word" is a bit over the top. Embarrassing, but hardly going to stop someone from buying the thing.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9yes, but apple isnt just some guy writing a personal program or something free.
apple is a lot of people being paid a lot of money to make something that gets sold for a lot of money
as such quality is meant to be checked, and then checked again to make sure that they are charging a lot of money for somethign that at least appears to be a quality product made by compentent people, would you buy a tv that as a pwoer button? would you just say, sure ill pay $2000 for that, everyone makes typos - cgjamj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I think the point is how this made it through testing undetected is what's so surprising. Especially given Apple's reputation for quality. How could such an obvious and easily exposed error not get caught?
- tabaczka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7probably because nobody at apple is dumb enough to lock themselves out of their ipod...
- cgjamj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I really hope you're just being sarcastic. That's a completely stupid statement since fat fingering, typo as nothing to do with intelligence, but you also have to realize that this is somthing that has to done intentionally for testing.

- T8erT0T, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1I don't know if that's legit since I don't own either. But if that's the case, then OUCH. Nothing like a peripheral subliminally telling you that you don't own something else.
- FunkyChicken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's definitely legit. I tried it out on and iPod Touch in the Apple Store near where I live today. Enter the wrong passcode several times until kablam. You get the iPhone message.
- digginghacker, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24Did anyone else notice that Steve kept referring to it as an iPhone in the Apple event?

- MatthewWilkes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well done. Why is this interesting?
- RothenbergXXX, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Man I gotta say I am sick of people ripping on Apple for stripping most of the iPhone features out of the iPod Touch. Apple spend two years and tens of millions of dollars developing the iPhone. Does it really seem unfair to you that Apple would not put all of this development effort into a lower-end device just because they could?
- MonkeyHugger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ladies and gentlemen, we have a fanboy.
- RothenbergXXX, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Ha ha, good guess. I'm just a rampant capitalist. You can decide which is worse though.

- nintendodude, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1yep, just did it on mine too! totaly legit
as for the guy saying that Apple is "***** up" by not increasing the functionality of the iPoT, you are stupid
apple is actually ***** YOU because you are buying one, but they will soon release a product that is actuallly designed to be more of a PDA.
either way, Apple makes great stuff, and everyone has no right to get so bent out of shape over something as dumb as this - razordancer, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Find an replace:

- saftaplan, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2If you buy an iPhone, you pay for the work done to make the iPhone. If you buy an iPod, you pay for the work done to remove features from the iPhone.
These products may look tempting, but if you don't want to lose your freedom, don't buy Apple. - SouthsideIrish, on 10/10/2007, -7/+8I don't want to be an apologist either, but do you know how hard it is to get coders, and how much code Apple has had to write in the last couple of years. Let see, there is OS 10.5, iPhoto, Numbers, the IPhone, plus whatever other code that was re-written for the rest of iLife, and iWork. Oh, and the code for the iPod Classic. Right now, Google is taking everyone they can get their hands on, and the good ones are going there. So, it is not surprising that Apple is missing things in their code, and even removing features in OS 10.5.

iPod Touch = iPhone - Phone- tumnas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1iPhone - Phone = i. Apple really needs to remember what the were going to call it
- heiroglyph, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8If this is the worst problem with a new product, Apple should be celebrating.
How can you get so bent out of shape over such a tiny, non-functionality breaking mistake?- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Ahem, you forget the little calendar functionality impairment?
- heiroglyph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The number of posts saying that the iPod Touch is crap simply because of a missed string replace just amazed me. I doubt half of them even seriously considered buying one to begin with.
Yes, they made a bad decision to impair the calender functionality, which is valid IMHO, but making a big deal over the iPhone text is just ridiculous and proves that it is either an exceptional product that is being picked on unfairly or that the Apple users have lost touch with reality. - sstidman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you weren't promised the calendar function when you bought the product, how can you call the product impaired?
Folks seem to forget that this is how it works for ALL product lines from vacuum cleaners to cars. Similar products from a given company are produced by the same people using the same parts. Product "cheapo" will have some of the functionality removed while product "supermega" will have everything included. Sometimes the functionality is in the form of hardware, sometimes the functionality comes in the form of software. If you wanted all the features of an iPhone, you should have bought an iPhone.

- NOFXY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It really doesn't bother me at all that it says iPhone instead of iPod or that its missing the calendar functionality. It would have been great if they had left it in but i bought it knowing it didn't have. and i'm not trying to bang on the iPod I just thought it was interesting so i here it is.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Ahem, you forget the little calendar functionality impairment?
- britkev1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I saw this on one of the units in the apple store yesterday.
- lickmygiggle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've repeatedly tried to reproduce this on my own iPod Touch, and I can't get it to even mention anything iPhone. All mine says is "Wrong passcode try again". Perhaps it's a rare occurrence?
- FartyMcFart, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0In order to get the iPhone lockout screen, you need to try to unlock the iTouch multiple times unsuccessfully. It will then display the screen in question.
