New iPods to have iTunes Music Download Capabilities and Digital Radio
vnunet.com — ...the new iPods will be able to receive digital radio, and will include a 'buy-now' function to allow the user to download and buy tracks as they are being played. This facility will be limited to tracks sold from the iTunes store

- digg it
- thehuskerfan, on 10/10/2007, -6/+29Sounds plausible..
- snypa, on 10/10/2007, -8/+7BUSTED!
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Not sure why you're being dugg down. I guess Diggers don't watch MythBusters.
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3YOU GUYS SUCK AT BEING FUNNY.
- Dgen_X, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2sounds like the first ipod that I would consider buying!
I like FM radio...and I've been putting off picking up an ipod due to the fact that I can get a quality music player with an FM radio built in...now digital radio would be even better, except I'll have to dump my 12 tracks purchased through napster...now that was a dumb move (not saying I'd buy through itunes..give me a hard copy or I won't pay for it)
hopefully it will be included in the Nano as well as the larger ipod- maexus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Honestly, I haven't listened to AM/FM radio in years
- theprez, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I seriously doubt that will be the Wednesday announcement. Let's be more realistic. Rumors, have been floating round about new nanos. That's what we'll probably get. It's been less than 3 months since the iPhone and almost a year since a nano update...
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6What does the iPhone have to do with it. The 5G iPod has been out for way too long (especially by Apple's standards).
- xGrill, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2they are actually on 5.5, not 5
- DelMonte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"they are actually on 5.5, not 5"
I'm pretty sure he knows that... The point is that they're still in the 5th generation, and that "0.5" update was relatively minor. - quomen, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Wow look at the big blue area that says "Reply to ______'s comment. (HTML tags aren't allowed. Comments are editable for 2 minutes.)" below me. I'm sure it's wasting a lot of space. Comments aren't editable for at all if you refresh the page, even before two minutes.
NEW COMMENT SYSTEM PLEASE.
and *****, GIVE ME MY TOUCHSCREEN IPOD PLEASE.
- DelMonte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"they are actually on 5.5, not 5"
- theprez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I didn't finish editing my comment (damn editting time!) and thought meh... I was going to add that like two years ago, it would be more likely to get a new flash-based ipod in september and a new hard-drive ipod in november. But then again... the 5G iPod's design is getting old sooo.... *mind overwhelmed with too much fanboy info* I want a touchscreen iPod too dammit!

- mightycbu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2oh no, didn't radio die five years ago?
what's next: a brown iPod that can squirt?
- snypa, on 10/10/2007, -8/+7BUSTED!
- HA5TY, on 10/10/2007, -18/+14That'd be cool, but I don't think it will happen
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I'm with you. Jobs gave a really good answer to people who were asking why there wasn't a radio built into the iPod as standard and he basically said that as soon as a feature is introduced, it could never be removed from subsequent hardware revisions and so they had to make damn sure they were doing the right thing - it's why the FM radio was sold separately and not rolled into the iPod.
I don't think Apple could introduce the digital radio and keep it present for *every* revision from now on, technologies change too fast. What if down the line a new type of digital radio is introduced which needs a chipset that sucks too much power, or needs a huge antenna or adds too much bulk or adds too much to the price? Apple would either have to remove a feature, raise prices or use an old tech, all of which they would be loathe to do.- titlesaysitall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5What about my old wire of fire, eh?
- sam10685, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1true... Or, they could stick with the old technology.
- lintmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Breaking news from... "va-nu-net"? Who?

awesome if true.- muniak, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1... really?
- Snakedal337, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3QFT....D?
- willynilly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I wonder if it'll incorporate the iPhone's ingenious headphone jack, which you can't plug anything into?
- TomGreen83, on 10/10/2007, -13/+7All I want is an updated touch screen interface... that would be awesome.
- Bob24, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2that's ALL you want? what about the ability to play music and all those other things the older iPods can do?
- TomGreen83, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yeah.... that's not what I meant...
- bradpurchase, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4How could it be updated if we don't have one now?
- TomGreen83, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0That's not what I meant, idiot.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Personally, touchscreen wouldnt be enough for me to dish out 300 for a new ipod. However, if I could add XM radio account to it or Syrius I would definitely buy an updated ipod. Ive been wanting digital radio in my car, and now I could have it.
- mepawl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Who says this thing will cost 300 bucks?
- Bob24, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2that's ALL you want? what about the ability to play music and all those other things the older iPods can do?
- xBoBsTeRx, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1I hope to god this is true because it would be simply awesome!! I'm already excited about the propect of a touch screen iPod video! :-D
Roll on Sept. 5th!! - Brutis, on 10/10/2007, -22/+7its rediculous that apple rumors make the front page so quick, im gonna go make a blog and start an apple rumor and post it to digg and see how quick it makes it, brb

- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think you have a bad link. http://how-to-spell-rediculous.com/ isn't working for me. ;)
- 0260, on 10/10/2007, -12/+4what the hell is digital radio?
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11. Google XM radio or Syrius.
2. Read
3. Profit!- halvertos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1*Sirius, but these are better known as satellite radio. not necessarily "digital" radio.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11. Google XM radio or Syrius.
- TinFoil209, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5The whole download/sharing thing is one area Zune is on top. Even though Microsoft makes lame use of it, the hardware is there. Hopefully will have this with the "Apple touch". Also with digital radio; Are we talking internet streams, or Digital FM (HD Radio)?
- rye134, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2In defense of Microsoft, they developed the Zune in a very short amount of time. I'm sure they will make better use of wi-fi in Zune 2
- Refrag, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1BS! It took MS longer to make "squirting" lame than it would have to leave all of the restrictions off of it.
- rye134, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2In defense of Microsoft, they developed the Zune in a very short amount of time. I'm sure they will make better use of wi-fi in Zune 2
- kundojjala, on 10/10/2007, -15/+7whats the battery life???
1 hr- Refrag, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The iPhone plays music for 24 hours.
- RoflcopterFUEL, on 10/10/2007, -12/+6I still wonder why people are waiting for new Ipod models when there's so much out there that already have such features. Cowon, for example, makes some of the best on the market. There's the D2: touch screen, 50h battery life, radio, video, and with the recent firmware upgrade, now supports flash apps and DAP.
- justinjstark, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4I bought a Cowon Iaudio 7. I sold it and bought an iPod. Until Cowon puts out some decent firmware, I can't recommend their players.
- stonr2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0and don't forget the price
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I also have the D2. Flash Lite 2.1 is a nice addition. There are some FW annoyances, but 2.50b is perfectly stable. 2.50 is a crock of *****, though. I'd recommend the D2 if you want a flash (not HD) music/video player that plays Ogg and FLAC.
- justinjstark, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4I bought a Cowon Iaudio 7. I sold it and bought an iPod. Until Cowon puts out some decent firmware, I can't recommend their players.
- TheAtomicMoose, on 10/10/2007, -18/+5Wow! A radio! The future is upon us!!!
- TheAtomicMoose, on 10/10/2007, -10/+131Wow! A Radio! The future is here!
- TheAtomicMoose, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2sry. i thought the first one didn't send. :C WHY!!! WHAT HAVE I DONE!
- zybch, on 10/10/2007, -15/+5Well since apple is the one that might be doing it all the apple fanboys will be creaming in their pants about the whole thing, coz, like, its a new innovative feature that nobody else has!
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Shut up. Nobody is creaming in their pants over a radio.
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17You DID notice it says digital radio? In the U.S., Digital Radio is also known as HD Radio. This means the new iPods would be able to receive digital radio, effectively one upping other MP3 players...
- Jeffler, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9My brother's $40 MP3 player supports Digital Radio. And I know what Digital Radio is so don't give me the "AAAH ITS NOT FM", cause I know it isn't.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Threre are less HD radio stations than FM ones; it will be a selling point once Apple's marketing gets their hands on it and convince people they need it.
- schallis, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Am I the only person that doesn't care much for built in radio (HD or not)? I just always have something in my own collection I'd rather listen to.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5i'd like wi-fi capabilities so i can listen to internet radio like last.fm, but i guess that won't be a common feature until city-wide wi-fi availability becomes more common. hopefully more cities will start adopting municipal wi-fi.
- neutrino15, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm with you. However, I think that even if the iPod just downloaded new episodes of podcasts on my list I would be happy. I travel constantly, and being able to download a podcast in an airport, (maybe even subscribe to new ones), then watch them on the plane... That would be insane..
Same goes for an on-the-road, or at office situation.. I can't plug in my iPod to a work machine, but if the iPod could download pod-casts directly?!
My guess, WiFi built in.. iTunes store (including pod-cast section) access via WiFi.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I ocasionally listen to a couple talk radio shows in my morning, thats something only radio can provide.
- logicbus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It'd be nice to catch a game or talk radio from time to time. Especially since I've got my iPod with me pretty much everywhere I go.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Not having an FM radio hasn't been a problem for me with iPods. A lot of other people talk about how it's something missing with the Apple players. I'm not one of them. Having or not having FM (or digital if this rumor is true) won't mean anything to me as far as whether or not I buy a new one. Now, having Wi-Fi that will allow me to connect to the iTunes store for new podcasts while traveling or an occasional audio or video purchase would make me more likely to consider the new iPods. Bigger screen is needed too. 3.5-inch for the full size iPod and at least a 2.5-inch for the nano (if they are really serious about adding video to the mid-range player).
I like the size of the nano and if they make big changes to it (please God, not that fat nano abortion that has been going around the nets), make it worth it or I'll stick with the 1st gen nano I already have. I won't buy it just because it's new and from Apple.
- toetagger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1There is no way in hell they are going to put a radio in there... "buy now"? What, start recording after the song has started? BS. Down load? How? EDGE? GSM? WiFi? It's just stupid! Apple wants nothing to do with radio, digital or otherwise! Forget it!!!
- floam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It would seem to be clear that, if true, and if the wifi rumors are correct, it would be over the internet via wifi. Else maybe the next time it's plugged into your machine.
- CCmachined, on 10/10/2007, -9/+1"allow the user to download and buy tracks as they are being played." wtf?
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Yeah it doesn't make sense unless it's like the Zune where it's expiring music that you got from your friend or something. Otherwise why would you buy it if it's already on your iPod.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20If you hear a song you like while listening to it on the radio, then they give you an option to buy it and listen to it all you want. Whats there to not understand?
- kelly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I don't know what's so hard to understand. Think of it like a radio station. Yes you can hear the songs... but you can't listen to them 15 minutes from now after the station moved on to another song. This service would be like you having a tape cassette in your radio at all times allowing you to record songs as they're being played.
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Yeah it doesn't make sense unless it's like the Zune where it's expiring music that you got from your friend or something. Otherwise why would you buy it if it's already on your iPod.
- naonao, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Not bad but seriously, I just hope there's Bluetooth so I can share music over phones etc.
- LoadStar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I don't buy the Digital Radio item. While the US has "HD Radio" (using technology from Ibiquity), which is technically digital radio, it is an "In Band On-Channel" system that uses FM as a carrier. Plus, it doesn't seem to be of much popular interest, though admittedly this is because limited HD Radio receivers are released, most of which carry a prohibitively high price.
The rest of the world uses DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) which is a totally different technology and wholly incompatible with HD Radio. (The US uses a subset of DAB for satellite radio - but somehow, I highly doubt that the new iPods will become satellite radio receivers.)- Niz1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1what!! i just presumed it was DAB well hopefully they will somehow make the European version DAB compatible or just have t in every iPod to be able to use DAB or Digital radio that or this will then surely screw up importing, as me buying from the US is a lot cheaper than buying from the UK. (going on holiday and buying one)
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Exactly. The US doesn't have DAB. Apple is a US company. They're not going to release a DAB player.
- breadfred, on 10/10/2007, -8/+7Wow... I only bought my first iPod this year, and am definitely missing the radio element. I enjoy the BBC radio stations - and digital radio even allows me to listen to the BBC world transmission. I did not expect to upgrade this soon, but I can hopefully get some money back from my old iPod to put towards a fully fledged digital radio equipped iPod!
- astrosmash, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Apple already sells a remote control/FM tuner for the iPod. Just pick up one of those.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It depends where in the world you live. Some countries can get it by DAB , some by FM, some by AM only.
- REBELinBLUE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah shame the FM remote is absolutely terrible ;) I'm in the middle of London and the signal is still terrible. So a digital tuner would be interesting to me, but since it appears the US use a different standard to everyone else I can't see it happening.
- astrosmash, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Apple already sells a remote control/FM tuner for the iPod. Just pick up one of those.
- apersaud, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1I hope for Sept 5th, they come out with a cool iPhone update with new features, maybe ones such as this. (I know I can keep dreaming).
- Rizmaster, on 10/10/2007, -10/+8I don't buy it. There's never been anything even remotely radio related in previous iPods, even when there wasn't an itunes music store. Can't see that changing now.
- kelly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ya, and there wasn't a color screen at all before the Ipod eventually added them. Was there no reason to think that they would add that too?
- MedHead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C04E07A&nplm=MA070G/C
- anthony1124, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4makes sense. it's about time the firmware on the ipod gets a huge overhaul.
- kelly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Why would you think that existing iPods could handle this. Its not a firmware issue. It's a hardware issue.
- jorgepblank, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Maaaan, I just got an iPod Video 5.5 over the summer :'(
- Jeffler, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I just got one yesterday.
14 day exchange FTW- jorgepblank, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Haha.
- GirSaysDoom13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2why would you do that? obviously new ones would come out soon-after.
- Niz1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Return it! if your within time, and if they're curious and ask you why just say your running windows 3.1 and didn't know it wasn't compatible. But your saying over the summer sounds like some time ago.
- Jeffler, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I just got one yesterday.
- sych0, on 10/10/2007, -8/+4what exactly is digital radio and who the hell are vnunet?
- punkrockxtian, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Digital. Radio. You have to be kidding.
- sam10685, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's radio. That is broadcast digitally. Don't ask how it works. Just accept it.
- Niz1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Im happy with my iPod video but for some reason im excited about radio? and the touch screen like iPhone idea.
- zybch, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3So, um, go get one of the many other MP3 players that ALREADY have both a touchscreen AND a radio. Stop being an appletard!
- xandifenn, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1still does not cheaper than, um, ...free
http://seeqpod.com/iphone - ruley, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5good thing i have stock in apple.
- bingobongony, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Why? What does a completely made up rumor have to do with your Apple stock?
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1because even false rumors help boost stock sales ;)
- whitehornmatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Too bad you couldn't sell a share to get a keyboard with a shift key.
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5More "pay-to-play" and subscription based services? No thanks. I'll stick with free radio and no-DRM'd MP3s.
- jeriqo, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Stealing sure is better than buying... until you either get caught or get self esteem.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3what do stealing and self-esteem have to do with anything?
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5DID YOU ***** READ WHAT HE SAID? He said free radio (Which happens to legally be free) and un-DRM'd MP3's (meaning ripped songs). Do you accuse everyone who doesn't spend tons of money on the iTMS of stealing? Who are you, NBC?
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'll happily pay for music I want as long as it doesn't come with DRM that will make it difficult to use.
- thedragon4453, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure why you are being dugg down. I don't see this being a big deal either. I could care less that I can purchase on the fly because I purchase and rip all my cd's.
PS: jerigo, you're a retard, because he said nothing about stealing, and was probably hinting towards ripping legally purchased cd's. Agreed with tech42er, do you work for NBC? - DOGPARTY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1stick with the current ipod then, does those two things fine
- jeriqo, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Stealing sure is better than buying... until you either get caught or get self esteem.
- richmonkey3, on 10/10/2007, -8/+4whats the point of the radio when you have an ipod? especially if you would be able to download songs from the ipod?
- indiephoenix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Be introduced to bands and songs you might not have heard before.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3yea, but the radio sux these days due to the dominance of the top 40 format. i'd much rather have wi-fi access to internet radio like last.fm or satellite radio.
- icheese, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2So you can get live NFL and breaking severe weather reports on an ipod? How? Music is only one part of what a radio offers. I no longer use the radio for music but I still enjoy talk radio, sports and weather.
- indiephoenix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Be introduced to bands and songs you might not have heard before.
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3More "pay-to-play" and subscription based services? No thanks.
- Elias1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Hopefully they don't half-ass it by not actually downloading straight into the iPod, but rather just executing an iTunes purchase the next time the ipod is docked.
- Zap2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Um, why would they? If you can get on iTunes, why not let you download it
Apple sometimes doesn't add features, but when they do, its not half arsed - johnpowell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well, this is the iPod and not the iPhone.. What happens if you walk out of WiFi hotspot in the middle of your download?
- jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm thinking it would resume later, kind of like what happens if you lose your Internet connection during an iTunes download.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I know what you're saying... I think the best way to handle it would be to have the option to download it to the iPod or to have it remind you that you have paid for a download when you get home, or maybe redundancy so when you get home the files are queued just in case your download "in the field" is interrupted by the battery dying or going out of range... I don't really see this as being more than a rumor though... WiFi downloads? Seems to go against the Apple 'Battery life is key' canon...
- Zap2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Um, why would they? If you can get on iTunes, why not let you download it
- androo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13im hoping for one with a larger hard drive. 120 gigs sounds nice.
- Zap2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Bring it on!!! Oh, and add the buying iTunes on the go to iPhone!
- gafasiesornivek, on 10/10/2007, -13/+2ooo a new way to give money to apple with the push of a button! fwap, fwap, fwap, fwap go the fans
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Don't worry about gassy. Someday you'll find someone drunk or desperate enough to have sex with you and you can stop having all these masturbation fantasies.
- gafasiesornivek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Oh its my alter ego FatParrot. fwap fwap fwap he goes again. Why not just give Steve Jobs an auto-withdrawal from your bank account to cover point releases of OSuX?
- huffnpuff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"OSux" .. that's pretty fresh.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Such an angry little boy you are. You really should find another way to access the internet other than your mom's AOL account. Here's a cookie.
- gafasiesornivek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Oh its my alter ego FatParrot. fwap fwap fwap he goes again. Why not just give Steve Jobs an auto-withdrawal from your bank account to cover point releases of OSuX?
- TimRogers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Get off the bandwagon.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Don't worry about gassy. Someday you'll find someone drunk or desperate enough to have sex with you and you can stop having all these masturbation fantasies.
- TomRemixed, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4In the end you are still buying drm'd music that doesn't have a back up. I rather handle my music all on the computer. However, I'm not buying an iPod anyway.
- fanclerks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5WTF are you talking about?? You can burn all the songs you download off iTMS to a CD without issue. And the argument about getting it off the iPod, iTunes does download the purchased songs off your iPod to your library if you want it to.
- nape, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1how would you receive this radio? over wifi? because thats not going to be very useful most of the time...
- klaupacius, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2***** radio, sirriusly.
- firefoxguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I hope this is true, my iPod got stolen so I am waiting till Wednesday to buy a new one
- fanclerks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I feel for ya. I've had one stolen before. Along with my Xbox360. It sucks.
- MikeWanDo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I doubt this will come out by Wednesday.
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2iPods have a nice habit of being released shortly after the debut, usually same day
- Jawsh91, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Same with me, my iPod was stolen right during the last week of school and went the whole summer without my music, it really sucks.
- digitallysick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If it comes with a radio great, if you don't like it just don't use it. Sometimes i run out of stuff to listen to on my ipod i wouldn't mind a radio function
- nickstr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1it receives DAB we use HD Radio also known as IBOC DAB in the United States European DAB uses different frequencies the radio function will be useless here.
- mlock2k, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1cool so i bet the zune will have one up on these then
- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0September 5th, eh? I'm glad I waited out on buying an iPod... hopefully this is the least of the improvements.
- cklol, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3More rumors? Unexpected!
- da5id, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1"The source said that the new iPods will be able to receive digital radio, and will include a 'buy-now' function to allow the user to download and buy tracks as they are being played."
Does this mean that you can now play a track before downloading it? That would be real cool. And buying a track on an iPod playing iTunes from the iStore -- what will they think of next?- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1no, I think the point is: you're listening to the radio, if you hear a track you like, you click the "buy now" link and buy it from iTunes. Assuming you're close to a wlan. and iTunes actually knows what white-label track Pete Tong is mixing at the time ...
- MattH, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Music gremlin might get apple for patent infringement they have a Wi_Fi media player that can purchase songs via the device .
http://www.musicgremlin.com/- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Apple usually doesnt care about infringing on patents or trademarks.
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1if musicgremlin has a ***** patent on that... ughhh
- imcquill, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I think if they integrate the radio stations already in iTunes onto the iPod, and allow you listen to them over wifi.. then include a buy button, it would be very cool. I'm willing to bet a lot of people would use it.. and you would never have to listen to a song, and wait to see if the dj will mention the artist name again..
Not to mention it would be a big boon to indie artists, as they get a lot of internet radio play. - shad0w, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5They must have some really awesome battery technology to power wifi, a harddrive, and a touchscreen for more than an hour or two.
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2... my laptop lasts six hours, so what?
- Sabin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1and you laptop battery is bigger than an ipod
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2... my laptop lasts six hours, so what?
- Hutson, on 10/10/2007, -10/+0but... will it blend? TEEHEE!!!
- component, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I have an iPod because radio sucks so badly. Please don't go there Apple.
- Zap2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1No one forces you to use it....and its not hurting you by having it.
- mth785, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I've never understood why anyone would want radio on an MP3 player.
- grrrrrrrrrrrrrr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I suspect the digital radio feature is related to seeding the consumer Pod market with receivers for a variety of wireless media, eventually including streaming video, delivered via the 700 MHz spectrum which will be itself innovative in its structure and distribution http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/01/technology/01spectrum.html?ex=1343620800&en=ea558b72f8b5767a&ei=5088&partner=rssny
Expect spirited bidding from Google and Apple for the rights to the spectrum. Who knows?...NBC may come to regret withdrawing from iTunes or perhaps they were already privy to the future and just didn't like the terms. As quid pro quo goes, Apple has hopefully managed expectations enough to deliver a touchscreen interface and avoid a resulting post-Xmas morning let-down. Things could ugly. One thing is fairly certain, I can't believe these guys are looking forward to September 5th.... http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/cbuilder?ticker1=HMV:LN - da9boy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14didn't we buy an ipod to not hear the radio?
- PsychoTomato, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2word
- alricsca, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Oh joy, I can now pay for what you to be a fair use right. Exactly why should I pay for the right to press the record button? I cannot believe they have so hoodwinked people that they are not see this for what is. For nearly fifty years we have had the right to time shift music that was broadcast, now the DMCA and digital come along and it is a for pay privilege. How damn sick it is that the sheep have so obediently followed the wolves.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You could read the F'n article, or you can go ballistic on a tirade... Seems you chose the tirade. If what you were talking about was actually the case, I could understand the anger... But I think what's being described is the ability to listen to satellite radio, hear a song you like, and buy it from the iTunes store by having the iPod utilize the metadata from the radio signal to inform the store which song you're looking to buy.
- optics, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yeah.. but what he's talking about is hearing a song on the radio, and recording it instantly. That's what we used to be able to do on regular radio and tape decks, and it was perfectly legal. Why do you need metadata to lookup the song in a store when you can record the song as its playing? Because now they are making you think that is illegal.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, that is SORT OF what he's talking about... He's talking about how he thinks we shouldn't have to pay to record the song/program we would be hearing, like in the 'old days' of making pause tapes and recording radio shows. I love that stuff myself, and have 50+ cassettes and minidiscs of old 80s/90s radio. I don't think Apple is ever going to have anything like that, and I certainly don't get that from this rumor. There is little implying that you will have a recording capability on this new iPod, and certainly nothing that made me think I would have to pay to use such a feature (if it had ever been implied). You can still hook up your radio to your tape deck/minidisc/computer with audio interface and record what you're hearing on the radio.

- masonry01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apple may be a US company but it sells to a worldwide market. Digital Radio is not a worldwide product. Who comes up with this crap?
