- TheAttacks, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4Is this like SwiftFox for Linux?
- dgooding, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1So installing SwiftFox on a regular Linux box is like installing regular Firefox on a Gentoo box?
I already had those optimizations, and more! - cathode, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23Nothing smacks of intelligence like mispelling the title.
- FridgeKitty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41Or misspelling it!

- gherikill, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Can we have athlon, p4 etc optimized version for windows next pls?
- Slapo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6There used to be loads of them. Stipe still makes them: http://pryan.org/firefox/stipe/ , for example.
- cybe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've been using these builds: http://www1.plala.or.jp/tete009/en-US/software.html for a while. Speedy.
- er0k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7oh moox where have you gone :(
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -29/+13Can we please check our spelling before submitting? Please, don't make Digg look stupid.
- lordbelial, on 10/12/2007, -28/+7"Please, don't Digg look stupid."
He may need help on spelling, but you need some help with grammar. - Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -18/+9Hey, I fixed it during my edit time. :->
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Cheater!
- lordbelial, on 10/12/2007, -28/+7"Please, don't Digg look stupid."
- beatmix01, on 10/12/2007, -12/+46I just love it when an article makes it to the front page with a blatant spelling error in the title. Spell check and proof reading people, welcome to third grade. OPTIMIZED not OPTOMIZED.
- tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20I was trying to figure out how to say the very same thing without looking like a jerk.
- sandhill, on 10/12/2007, -12/+26 OPTIMISED would be OK as well
- PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -25/+10Do we need told what the correct spelling is for everything? Most of us are aware that it's not spelled correctly, and most of us know what was meant to be conveyed, whether it's spelled correctly or not.
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36What is it with you Brits?
You'd think you invented the language or something! - sandhill, on 10/12/2007, -31/+12
@diggerphelps
well, that's why it's called English... - ultrasoul, on 10/12/2007, -23/+12Optimized is yankee-speak for optimised. Get on with it. And diggerphelps, we did invent the English language. That's what it's called English. If not for us, you stupid Yanks would be blabbering French right now. Ungrateful buggers.
- kuribo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I think diggerphelps was joking, guys...
- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -2/+161) Diggerhelps was obviously making a joke.
2) If it wasn't for us you'd be speaking German right now. note: also a joke.
Though I am quite fond of the way you say, ah-loo-mini-um - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Can't one argue that Greek and Latin are in fact the roots of the English language? I'll chalk up Americans speaking it to the Brits but I'll blame Zeus for coming up with it.
- edosmund, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10English is actually a Germanic language. We just borrowed heavily from Latin and Greek, like most other European languages.
- jjpertusch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@ ultrasoul
actually if it weren't for you, we'd be speaking german. :) - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1EDIT:
Just kidding. Someone else already made that point.
- asteron, on 10/12/2007, -21/+11A submission with spelling like "Optomized" made it to the front page? What does basic spelling no longer count? Someone should really screen what gets published for basic spelling/grammar errors as it reflects badly on the quality of the site.
- Kamino, on 10/12/2007, -23/+7Yeah, plus it doesn't mention this is Mac only.
- Scourge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Err.. "…G4, G5, and Intel Mac optimized Firefox…"
That isn't clear enough for you Kamino? - diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18"Yeah, plus it doesn't mention this is Mac only."
It's under digg.com/apple - lexbaby, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6I think Kamino's point is: "Mac Optimized version of Firefox 1.5.4 Released" would be a better title.
- ref-d, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I'm sure the fact that it's a digg-worthy story got it on the main page.
Yeah, bad spelling, but if you can't see past that, I feel for you. - crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Kamino got raped bad for that comment.
Oh well, maybe he can just clone a new asshole. - Kamino, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Indeed, I was refering to the title. I am just saying I agree with the initial comment: this is not frontpage-worthy because of: an average headline, average description and questionable relevancy. (since the only Apple most people have seen is green). Not everyone on Digg is a AJAX/MAC/LINUX/WEB2.0 fanboy, get over it.
- bryguy000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Thanks for the direct links, I hope this will pep my old powerbook up a bit.
- individual61, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3To be honest, I haven't been able to determine if these builds are perceptibly faster or not. I have tried both the optimized and standard versions (switching back and forth as new versions of each become available). The only time Firefox is too slow for me is when it is starting a download (it beachballs for a few seconds). I thought it was due to an extension that places the download manager in a tab, but after removing said extension, it still beachballs.
Strange.- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I absolutely notice a big difference. Firefox has been so slow on my MacBook Pro that I've been using Safari until they can speed up FF. This is a Godsend!
- pangloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This version is much faster on my G4 PB, however I still think Camino is quicker.
I just wish FF would integrate with my secure keychain better...until it does, I'll stick with Camino for normal browsing and use the DeerPark FF version when required.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I absolutely notice a big difference. Firefox has been so slow on my MacBook Pro that I've been using Safari until they can speed up FF. This is a Godsend!
- RafiParrr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This doesn't seem to be any bettter than Camino, except that it does RSS feeds. Or maybe it's just that G4s are too slow to begin with, I don't know. How're the Intel and G5 versions?
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1G5 version loads twice as fast as the standard FF build. About same start time now as Safari.
- dhakbar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2lrn2spell nub
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1What's the point of CPU optimized web browsing? It's not like anything in it is CPU-bound.
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Ah, a person who only ever runs one application on his/her machine at a time, I see.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah I guess if your system is thrashing constantly other applications may affect your browsing speed. Browsers are IO-bound, the operating system will schedule other applications around them, it's not completely stupid you know.
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Really? So rendering huge portions of text into a dynamic object tree, then rendering that tree many times a second while it changes is not intensive? Digging a comment here used to eat my whole AMD 2500 proc and look very jerky and terrible. Now it's nice and smooth. :D
- WhyTwoKay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Digging Down a comment uses 75% of my Athlon64 3000+, digging up a comment uses 4%. Is this like that "it takes more muscles to frown than to smile" thing?
- Ryuuzaki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Would be fun to repeat the whole "Opera vs Firefox render speed tests" using those.
- p0windah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm using this on an Intel and it's nice, very nice
- drn666, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So, 1.5.0.4 on an Intel Mac is slow for who, now? Blazing fast for me out of the box.
- Real-ity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm looking forward to trying this. The standard Firefox is way too slow for me to run on my G4 mac mini. Camino, however, runs great. I have high hopes, but my guess is it won't make enough difference to matter.
- mikewilsonuk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3What does "optomized" mean? I expect they meant "optimized" -- that was careless -- there is a "Check Spelling" button I can see right here.
- ozziegt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Agreed. Such poor quality submissions should never make it to the front page.
- dwordle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I suspect you meant 'suspect' not 'expect'.
- serpicolugnut, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3This conversation is an utter waste of the MySQL table cell that it occupies. Next.
- ralphc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How do these optimized versions handle the automatic updates from the mothership? After an update & restart of Firefox, are you running an unoptimized 1.5.0.5, an optimized 1.5.0.5 from mobookie, or some crashfest bastard mating?
- protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it depends on the builder's implementation. I don't know what this builder does, but it is possible to redirect the update code to the builder's specific builds instead of official mozilla code.
- neilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't build the automatic update server for these builds as it's a bit over my head... but extensions should update as usual.
- thejokell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Safari still seems to be faster for me on my new MacBook. Funny, because on my G5 I wont use anything other than Firefox, but now I find myself loving the speed of Safari...
- protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ive been using optimi[z|s]ed builds of firefox for about a year and a half on various platforms. Check out the mozilla third party build forums for various levels of enhancements for various os/cpu combinations. Builders usually spin compiles for milestones, the branch, and/or the trunk. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=42
- manthrax3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Good thing since Mac OSX is so damn slow.
- neilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry folks - the server went down for a big because of an issue I was having with Movable Type and the comment script (sigh). It's back up now.
- dooraque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Optomise your spelling first!
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As a Mac user would say, "spell different."
- danielandrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The speed is hit or miss as far as what is faster ... however, I love the aqua form fields.
- rbvmusic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I downloaded this at least 2 months ago. Way to stay on the cutting edge.
- A-Dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The English vs the American flames were hilarious, you forum troll bastards!
- wazzzup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2El Furbe has 'em here. Plus nightly builds and a nicer icon.
http://firefoxmac.furbism.com/- danielandrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's also possible to simply copy/paste the icon from firefox onto the optimized builds.
Get info for firefox, select it's icon, cmd+c, then get info for the new build, select it's icon, and press cmd+v.
I'm sure a lot of people know that, but maybe someone could use that tip.
- danielandrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's also possible to simply copy/paste the icon from firefox onto the optimized builds.
- fu_fish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Time to optimize the spell checker.
- ebola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When I first glanced at the headline, I read "Lobotomized version of firefox...".
- mohittaneja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it is really good!!!
thanks
