Paul McCartney: "Beatles download deal with iTunes virtually settled"
news.yahoo.com — Efforts to clear the Beatles-related music for digital distribution have been previously held up by a long-running trademark feud between iPod/iTunes-owner Apple Inc. and Apple Corps., the Beatles label.

- Sabin, on 10/11/2007, -33/+5w00t! I love the RIAA! UP WITH DRM! I LOVE HDR!!!! MARK FOLEY IS A SAINT! YAY FOR GOVERNMENT WIRETAPPING!!! I LOVE REPUBLICANS
- fober, on 10/11/2007, -26/+0YAFR ARAFAT
- ganjadude4391, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6ive had the entire beatles collection in MP3 since around 1999, if you like the beatles you already have it on LP, or 8 track or cassette or cd or all of the above, rip it yourself i really dont see the big deal here
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -13/+16I wonder, who among the fans of the beatles has not bought the music they wanted yet in the past 40 years? Is a few albums that big of a deal? At least to the geek population of digg? Digg me down all you want, but these are some legit questions.
- MercedRocks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25You have new generations of young adults reaching those magic "music listening years" all the time. Each new generation of people is a new customer base looking to discover great works like The Beatles, Jimi, The Dead, Floyd, etc. -
- PrettyMuchBryce, on 10/11/2007, -16/+4guys i just figured out a way you can get music for free and not pay for it!!!! i know it sounds like ***** but its true! pm if you want to know how
- ngageguy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4@MercedRocks
Very true. I work with a gal who just got out of college and during a music program fell in love with the Beatles and has like 2 of their CD's. - AntBing, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2I would care about this deal IF I actually bought DRM'd music. I would sooner go to the music store and buy the actual CD, rip it myself and have a hard copy backup.
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6That does not change the fact that the Beatles are so widely available that being able to buy them on iTunes is probably not that big of a deal. Can you answer that or not? I'm just not seeing the reason for this to be considered huge news.
- NeoSporin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It may not be huge news, but it is news. To be honest, Id rather read about big companies fighting over music then how digg is hiring a web designer.
- Dayyve, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3No offense dude, but did you ever think about people not like yourself? What about the gazillions of kids growing up with iPods who can now download and learn about The Beatles (REAL music, no American Idol crap) where they never would have before. I'm sure a lot of kids use the ITMS exclusively so they don't even think about The Beatles unless one of their parents plays it in the car or something.
- Balanced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3A lot of people may only want a handful of beetles songs that are likely spread over a half-dozen albums even in best-of format. This is a way to fill that need.
- Monkeyhoot, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0McCartney didn't say anything about iTunes. He said the music should be available *online* very soon. I don't know who MercedRocks was quoting, but it wasn't McCartney.
- goldliop, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0well
i agree with salqat.
but im sure plenty of people will download it,
those people being..
old people who just got itunes and don't know how to upload a cd..
it's still a profitable buisness.
but
im wondering if this will be big or not. - bobmagoo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1"Beatles download deal with iTunes virtually settled"
pun intended - mjb3411, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5It's about damn time.
- slythfox, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1I have a Beetles CD from Apple... it makes me wonder...
- musicfreak21, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Paul McCartney: "Beatles download deal with iTunes virtually settled"
No pun intended.
- Richardgm, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2What's an iTunes?
Fun and jokes aside, what's iTunes?- digitalarcanum, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3a piece of ***** online music company that suckers you in to buying music for 99 cents a track and in only one audio format. In addition you aren't legally allowed to change the format for the god damned song to be compatible with other music players thanks to DRM. Oh and Steve Jobs, he controls iTunes. he claims he's against DRM, but he also claims to be a god not unlike that psycho, xerxes from 300. Real audiphiles download torrents and tell Steve Jobs and the RIAA to suck it.
- Loie, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3Why doesn't Apple Corps just change the name of their label to Beatles Records or something? Seems like a bonehead move to fight the branding of "Apple (Computer)" when they have such a priceless name in "Beatles". To me "Apple" == computers, iPods, iTunes. "Beatles" == music.
- 68024, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Maybe because Apple music has been around since the 1960s?
- TrevorNoble, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Apple Records is a record label founded in 1968 as a division of Apple Corps Ltd. by the Beatles.
that's years before apple computers was founded.
- binaryspiral, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2omgwtfbbq!
If you pay for it, you're a good consumer. If you remove the DRM, you're a good citizen.
http://www.digg.com/apple/iTunes_7_1_2_DRM_cracked/blog - billyfoxtrot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Does anyone know if they are just intending to release the current Beatles catalogue as it exists on CD, or if they might be releasing remasters of the superior mono versions? Try listening to an album like Sgt. Pepper's or Magical Mystery Tour on your iPod with headphones in the current stereo versions, it's pretty awkward. There will be like four instruments in one ear and a tambourine or something in the other ear. I can imagine people downloading them and being pretty disappointed when they listen to it on their iPods. People are used to properly mixed stereo albums these days.
- mjb3411, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4From what I read before, EMI wanted to release higher quality remasters similar to the remastering job done with Love. I certainly hope this is the case, if Love is a testament to what they can make the original tapes sound like (granted they did a lot of combining of takes from various albums, the technology has still progressed immensely since the 80s).
- 68024, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yes, I hope so! Listen to 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' on the remastered 'Yellow Submarine' album- it sounds mindblowing compared to the old master on the cd or record. I can't wait to hear the same be done to the rest of the album and in particular the White Album is due for an overhaul, there is so much hiss on it, even on the cd.
- CGorman68, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4So... Beatles downloads through iTunes. Honestly, I spent a massive amount of time finding great sounding Beatles albums. Dr. Ebbets, MFSL, Toshiba Black Triangle, etc. Not to mention Stereo of Mono. I had to grab FLAC's of each to compare against my vinyl and cd versions to see which sounded the best. To put faith into Apple (or whoever releases them online) is... Scary. Nobody is going to be 100% happy.
I'm all for the music to be readily available and for people to realize that the Beatles are more than just the Fab Four of '63-'65... I'm just weary.
(I know, I know. Long winded with no real point. Go ahead and digg down.) - tehjarvis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'll take the original mono versions of the Beatles albums.
Like the original Star Wars Trilogy: Just because it can be "enhanced" with technology doesn't mean it should be.
- laserblazer, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Paul McCartney is a hack who needs to find a new line of work.
- Drakkor, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2Beatles crap was already released years ago, through Napster, and I have all of it,bwhaahahahahahha, no DRM included, lol :)
- arrow85, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1chaining the name of Apple would amount to sacraledge they did great works not just the beatles apple came frist the record company if any one should change it should be apple computers
- Drakkor, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Anything I say is dugg down, here goes again, Apple can blow me !! and blow; me critics, thought is was freedom of speech, guess not
- Balanced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You're dugg down because your comment was marginally relevant at best and poorly written. Also, it was a troll.
You got your freedom of speech by making the comment. The government didn't censor it, the user community chose to hide it, but it can be revealed by anyone clicking a single button.
- Balanced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You're dugg down because your comment was marginally relevant at best and poorly written. Also, it was a troll.
- tehjarvis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Anyone who's wanted Beatles tunes for their ipod should already have them on there.
I've already purchased every album in two formats, I won't be spending any cash.
By the way: Revolver > Sgt. Peppers - chotty, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Some trivia for the youngsters:
*The first ALBUM released on Apple records was??________________ "James Taylor".
*The first SINGLE?__________________________ "Those were the days" - Mary Hopkin. - DoTheFandango, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I've downloaded the White Album off of OiNK in FLAC 3 times, and each time the newest download sounded different than the last. One was an amateur rip of the CD, then one was the Dr. Ebbett's, then one was the MFSL, the best sounding one IMHO. Further, I have two copies of Sgt. Peppers, the one I ripped from my CD at LAME 320CBR and a Mono-rip FLAC I found, and each has its good, great, and iffy points.
It will be interesting to see: a.) What version is put up there for any of the given releases, b.) What happens if they put a poor version up.
My guess is that Apple will milk this for all it's worth, releasing multiple versions of each album.- anchorboi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1whoop-dee-*****-doo.
- Balanced, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wow, you're saying there's no quality control on free, unauthorized materials? I'm amazed!
- kingygk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I hope Paul Mcartney's Catalog will also be drm free. That would be sweet. I still prefer buying cds and ripping the tracks myself. Cds are the best backups should the hard drive die. Apple needs to loosen the re download policy. 5 times is just not enough for purchased tracks. You should be able re download those purchased songs on all of your pc's effortlessly.
- Codasco07, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Wow, when this actually happens, the iTunes music store will be complete. Virtually every artist is on there and the view that aren't (AC-DC espically) will now have to cave in. Apple will gain a virtual monopoly on online music sales.
- Waredgo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yeah, big deal. It's not like you can't get any Beatles tune every recorded in a digital format from somewhere.
Would be interesting to see how many tunes they actually sell once it gets onto iTunes. - a lot less than they'd predicted I'd bet. - kevint, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Great!
Now bring on Led Zeppelin! - doon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Beatles iPhone.
Buy Apple stock now. Three months ago, the analysts said that it would top at 110. It's 109 today and they haven't even rolled out the iPhone or Leopard. Who knows where this is going but if they can get 109 a share on Apple TV and vaporware. Wow, that is impressive.
