Rogers caves on iPhone 3G plans, offers up 6GB for $30 a mon
engadget.com — Those kind, gentle Canadians have been oh-so-politely demanding a few heads on sticks ever since Rogers' super-spendy iPhone 3G price plans were announced. Well, apparently their cries have been heard, and now Rogers is launching a promotional offer along with the iPhone of 6GB of data for $30 a month -- not quite unlimited data, but close enough -

Quoting from Rogers' website:
"...For example, you may choose to combine one of our new data plans ranging from $30 per month (for 300MB) to $100 per month (for 6GB) with a voice plan."
So it looks like it's 100$ for unlimited (voice plan extra). I think Engadget got it wrong. 30$ only gives you 300MB. If I'm not wrong, then Rogers just added insult to injury.
Here's the link to iPhone plans (it might take you to region selection first)
http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-product ...- assbeard, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1FAIL. This is the old info. They haven't updated their site yet. Engadget is not the only site reporting this. There are even Rogers reps commenting officially on this change.
- tsnd, on 07/09/2008, -1/+15No Engadget got it right....
"Effective July 11, and as a limited time promotional offer for customers
who activate by August 31 on a three year contract, a data-only offering of
6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any
in-market voice plan. For example, with 6GB of data, iPhone 3G users can visit
35,952 web pages, or send and receive 157,286 emails, or watch 6,292 minutes
of YouTube videos each and every month"

3 year contract
6gb DATA ONLY for $30/mo
Is that not still horrible? - Godlike, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5DATA ONLY does kinda kill it.
- Raian, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Now this is just a hypothesis... but if Apple hasn't allocated many units... and there is 10-20 per store.... is it possible the 100,000's of thousands of people that want this plan will not be able to get their hands on a phone until after august 31st?
- Kyan, on 07/09/2008, -2/+1My, you're cynical. And I can see why.
- Bootes, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3In the US we're paying $30/month for 5GB data only and a 2 year contract.
- GregR, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2The original data plan included free access to wireless hotspots. It isn't clear if that still applies.
- etruscan, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I want to know if they'll allow this $30 promotion to be added to the iPhone plans they are offering. They seem vague about that.
- worminater, on 07/09/2008, -1/+40first off:
- chaoswings, on 07/09/2008, -1/+12It says "limited time promotional offer" what is the real price going to be after the offer has expired?
On a side note, at least they are doing something about the iPhone but I still have a bone to pick with them about their internet bandwidth caps. Those caps should be twice as high as they currently are. For someone with 4 internet users and PCs in the house 60GB is not enough. I can't even upgrade to their 90GB extreme service because it's not in my area.- etruscan, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4I think that means (and of course, with Rogers, it's only a guess) that you will only be able to sign up for the service until August 31st - after which time the $30/6GB promo will end. I don't think it means you'll end up spending more for the 6GB after August 31st.
- gfair, on 07/09/2008, -0/+10I'd like to point out that *just this week* Rogers was advertising $30/month for just 300 MB and selling it as 'the best value in the industry'.
Somehow Rogers found a way to offer 20x more value than the best value in the industry.
This is still just a cave on the data though. We still have minutes and texts that are 33% - 50% out of line with AT&T. When Rogers delivers an upgrade on ALL of its plan, then that's when they can start to hope that Canadians will buy in.- BoneStamp, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1And that's a lot better than last month when they were offering 200mb/month at $100/month... (no voice plan, no text messages).
- Iznogoth, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2On the price page for the plan of the iphone what we can read...
While the iPhone 3G Voice and Data Packages allow you to use this device to its fullest and offer savings over separate voice and data plans, they are not the only options available to you. Other pricing options are available. For example, you may choose to combine one of our new data plans ranging from $30 per month (for 300MB) to $100 per month (for 6GB) with a voice plan. Learn More. They are available by calling 1 888 ROGERS1 or by visiting your nearest Rogers retail location.
Where the special offer...???
https://www.rogers.com/web/Rogers.portal?_nfpb=tru ... - FXPooky, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Would be even cooler if they announced some cheaper plans... 80$ a month (Voice + Call ID + System Access + Data + Taxes) is still too much for me... if they announced a 3GB 15$ plan it'd be perfect, as I won't use that much data.
- Dasliberdan, on 07/09/2008, -1/+13 year contract!?!?! Suck it long and suck it hard Rogers!!
- kkiran, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Rogers is trying to force customers by the August 31 deadline. RuinediPhone got their money but I don't see all the Canadians uniting :(
3 F'ING years for an iPhone which is going to release a minimum of FOUR upgrades in 3 years! eBay is the best bet guys, play it safe, Rogers feels they can rape their customers jus so easily!
iLikeMyiPhone- zakatov, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1The hardware is pretty much the same (CPU/memory), between 3G and original, so all the software updates are gonna be available to all iPhones for a while.

- peterbarbosa, on 07/09/2008, -23/+13$30 for 6gb, strictly data is still fairly pricey. Now, if that had a voice plan attached with it, that's what I call a solid deal.
- Bots, on 07/09/2008, -0/+18the whole point of it is that they are offering you 6gb on top of a voice plan for $30. you still have to buy a voice plan.
- Spudster, on 07/09/2008, -1/+11And you still have to get a 3 year contract.
- dotorg, on 07/09/2008, -4/+1Might want to check the contracts of the "unlimited" data plans in the US.
Not sure what ATT's is, but Verizon, for example, defines unlimited as 5GB for their wireless data services. One byte beyond that is a $250 charge.- Spuy767, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I used my iPhone as a modem when I moved and downloaded 9 gigs one month with nary a penny of overage.
- Bootes, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1All the 3G services in the US are limited to 5GB a month.
- FDL1, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1If you go over 5GB on Verizon, it's $0.49/MB.
- EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1@Spuy767
The limits seem to be enforced sporadically. I think they only tend to go after people that exceed the limit on a regular basis, and typically a warning proceeds any further action.
- solistus, on 07/10/2008, -0/+16gb data and a voice plan for $30? I want some of what you'r smoking... Here in the States, most providers don't even offer a monthly voice plan below $40.
- enntee, on 07/09/2008, -11/+201I never thought this would work, but I'm thrilled that it has. It's very rewarding to know that a good old fashioned consumer revolt actually CAN make a change.
- Spudster, on 07/09/2008, -9/+18It's really more of a distraction than anything else. You still have to get a 3 year contract and this is not unlimited and is 30 dollars on TOP of the voice plan. The plans will still easily be 90 dollars+ a month.
This is not change that you can believe in...- fk122, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8AT&T's unlimited data plan is fair-usage capped at 5gb a month, so in that respect, it's actually a pretty decent deal...
- Logicexe, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4It's not ideal, but it's a heck of a lot better than what they had been previously offering.
- EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -3/+2I suspect Canada is more expensive to service than the US, due to a lower population density. Other factors such as taxes and regulations also play a large factor, so I'm not sure you can blame Rogers (completely) for higher prices.
Then again I know very little about Canada and may be completely wrong--I just like playing devil's advocate. - skyteria, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3Canada has a higher population density. We are heavily urbanized.
- ghoppe, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6EtherGnat: I admire the devil's advocate position, but you're wrong. The coverage area in Canada is smaller:

http://www.wireless.att.com/support_static_files/i ... - Spudster, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Great post Ghoppe, I used to always say that to my friends aswell that it was easier for American companies versus Canadian.
Although, it would be nice to see how much area per capita both countries service. Also, what does the yellow covered area mean? - ghoppe, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Yes, the area per capita question is a good one.
But on the other hand, Rogers bought the only other GSM carrier in Canada, Fido, so there's only one GSM network here. I understand that the USA has T-Mobile as well as at&t/cingular?
I suspect that the lack of competition has more to do with pricing here than the network cost/capita, but I admit I'm not certain.
The yellow areas are "soon to be serviced" areas. The map I found dates from 2006 I think. - EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1@ghoppe
I appreciate the input, but subscriber density is still tough to judge. The US has 304,550,000 people and 82% of them have cell phones, leading to almost 250 million subscribers. Canada has only 33,313,000 residents and 19.3 million wireless telephone subscribers.
That means there are about 13 times as many cell phone subscribers in the US as there are in Canada. By my eye it looks like about 75% of the US is covered (about 7.2 million km^2). By extrapolation if more than 6% of Canada is covered (about 557 thousand km^2) they actually have a lower subscriber density.
@ Spudster
The yellow areas are proposed expansion. - ghoppe, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3@EtherGnat
Thanks for the numbers, but remember that Canada has only one GSM network provider. The US has at least two (and aren't there more smaller ones?) It would be more useful to compare at&t with Rogers.
at&t subscribers: 71.4 million
Rogers: 7.3 million
So although it's more like just under 10x the number of subscribers, I agree that there are fewer subscribers per coverage area... but I don't think it's as bad as you think.
Take a look at that map. Alberta looks nearly 50% covered (go oil!), and Ontario maybe 20%, but gosh darn it, it sure looks like the rest of Canada is well under 10%.
Alberta is about 6% the area of Canada, so we have half your 6% goal right there...
I remain unconvinced that voice/data rates are so tightly coupled to the coverage infrastructure. Rogers does a lot more than just wireless cellular, and their plans are confusing with many taken for granted features (like caller ID) lumped into $15/mo. wireless "essentials" plans. (If they're "essential" why do you make them separate optional paid add-ons?)
We've been paying through the nose for data plans up here for too long. The iPhone has become a lightning rod for dissatisfaction with monopolistic and cartel-ish practices of cell phone carriers. - EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1"It would be more useful to compare at&t with Rogers."
Fair enough, but I still think it's dangerous to directly compare rates between two systems. There are so many variables--here's just a few I can think of:
* Density
* Taxes
* Maintenance and installation costs (might be higher in cold weather etc)
* Terrain affects how far signal will travel
* Labor costs
* Regulations (maximum tower height, power, etc)
* Exchange rates
* Quality of Service
I don't have answers to any of those issues, but I'm pretty confident it's more complicated than just comparing $ to $. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm trying to defend Rogers. I've had no dealings with them and have no doubt they're evil just like all the other telecomms. - Spudster, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Until Roger's produces the numbers, we'll know nothing. The thing is however, there is not a significant infrastructure overhaul necessary to support the iPhone, so the increase is clearly related to the fact that it's the heavily branded iPhone and not just another smart phone.
Also, I think the map might be a bit misleading because other companies are covering area's not included by Rogers. Northern Ontario for example appears to fit in with this. - zigspective, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2"I've had no dealings with them and have no doubt they're evil just like all the other telecomms."
No they are more evil because in many areas they have no true competition. In my area they are the only company I can go with for any cable services, either internet or tv.
Now I could understand higher prices in places that were actually remote, but I live in Toronto, we have a higher population density than LA and our weather is more moderate than New York City with the same geographical qualities. Add to this the fact that our dollar is extremely strong right now and prices should be going down, but instead they are going up and up. There is no reason why my telecom prices shouldn't be more competitive with those in the US but anyone in LA or Seattle or Dallas can get way better prices.
"* Regulations (maximum tower height, power, etc)"
That's just kind of funny because we actually ending up building the CN Tower, the former tallest building in the world, primarily as a way to relay radio and tv signals. - EtherGnat, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1"No they are more evil because in many areas they have no true competition. In my area they are the only company I can go with for any cable services, either internet or tv."
I live in the second largest city in my state, and Comcast is the only choice I have for Internet and TV. I could tell tales about our local telecoms that would curl your toes.
"Now I could understand higher prices in places that were actually remote"
Does Rogers charge higher prices in areas that are more remote? I know there is little if any variation in prices from our cell phone providers based on location, although obviously some areas are more expensive to service. More profitable areas subsidize more expensive areas, it's just the way of the world.

- zombieball, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Unfortunately this may have not even been a consumer revolt. There are credible rumors floating about that Apple was angry with Rogers for the bad publicity their shatty plans were giving the iPhone. So Apple decided to fight back and say they were redirecting shipments of the iPhone away from Canada to meet demands in the U.S.
http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/07/07/ap ...

Consumers are going to get what they want one way or another, its just a matter of time.

I've been on the phone and at stores. Get this. They won't have any information about how many units they will receive, what plans they will offer (other than what's online), if I will have to relinquish my current plan and not be able tack on data UNTIL THE DAY OF THE LAUNCH!
Way to go Fido on managing a launch. Just call yourself Rogers already and let their PR team handle this.- ethanfortes, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1These guys are really bad at this. At both Apple and Fido stores (haven't been to Rogers) I've gotten both a "we don't know, wait 'till launch day" response, and a "*answer to question*" response.
Fido stores will have 10 iPhones on launch day and Apple stores... well won't have any :P
- ethanfortes, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1These guys are really bad at this. At both Apple and Fido stores (haven't been to Rogers) I've gotten both a "we don't know, wait 'till launch day" response, and a "*answer to question*" response.
- Antaries, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Don't see why you couldn't get it with Fido since Rogers owns Fido.
- stelth, on 07/09/2008, -8/+138Although it is not unlimited, I would consider this a fair deal. Especially since it's an "added to your plan" deal instead of an all-in-one package.
I was currently not going to upgrade, but I am now.
Though I still hate you, thanks Rogers. You listened to the people and that's a start to being better.- Spudster, on 07/09/2008, -1/+15How is it any better? You are still stuck with a 3 year contract and plans that cost over 90 bucks a month.
- thrasher6670, on 07/09/2008, -0/+14we pay that already, we're used to it. this is a lot better then it was
2 months ago it was $7/month for unlimited browsing on the special* roger browser.
6 months ago it was $45/month for 5MB
* by special i mean the short bus kind of way - fk122, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1It's better because you can choose which voice plan to go with, which options to add and then add your 6GB for $30 on top of that. So, I could choose a $25 voice plan, $15 worth of options (like the value bundle giving 2500 sent text messages, caller ID and visual voice mail) plus the $30 data plan. That puts me at $70, or $81 with taxes and fees (in AB). Pretty steep for a phone, but much, much better than it was.
- Canuck, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3It is better because we can keep our existing voice plans and simply add a data plan. 6gb for $30 is an ok offer. Not outstanding but ok.
As far as locking in for 3 years, I used to be with Telus for around 10 years. If you have an iPhone there is no one other company that supports it anyway. Yes, there may be new competition in the future, but I'm guessing it will be at least 2 years before they are in the market. So really it is only locking in for one year. - yabos, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Which is better 6GB for $30 or 300MB. The price is still steep but the data is so much better.
- TopherT, on 07/09/2008, -3/+2What is stopping people from just buying the ipod touch, installing skype on it, setting up a voicemail online, and just using wi-fi. Sure the coverage is not so great but AT&T's 3g coverage isn't so great either. This way you're not spending a red cent per month except on skype which is cheep as hell.
- dustinmacdonald, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1TopherT: You're in a dream land. Unprotected WiFi isn't ubiquitous at all. Besides, the iPod touch doesn't have a speaker or microphone.
- Spudster, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3Is it actually possible to set up skype on an iTouch?
- freqk, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1@Spundster
Kind of, though voip isb't really worth it. - ghoppe, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3@fk122
Let me get this straight. For you a "much, much better" plan is a limited time deal (end of August) which you end up paying at least $10/mo. extra for perhaps 100 more anytime minutes (but no more unlimited evening/weekends) and 6GB of data instead of 400MB...
No, Rogers has thrown a bone to say "see, we listen to the customers". All this plan is designed to do is lure early adopters that are weary of their lackluster early offer and willing to wait for better .
For the Rogers' iPhone to be palatable to me, I would need a reasonable contract length (24 mo. maximum), decent number of daytime talk minutes (if i'm paying $70/mo. for a freaking CELL PHONE would being able to talk on it for more than 5 minutes a day be too much to ask?) and decent data (I understand they are weary of "soft-capped" "unlimited" data, but this is a data device -- I don't want to worry about their exorbitant tiered overage charges. 2-6 GB is fine.)
And you know, would tossing in Caller ID without charging $7 a month for changing a freaking database field be too much to ask? And would rollover minutes be such a financial burden?
- thrasher6670, on 07/09/2008, -0/+14we pay that already, we're used to it. this is a lot better then it was
- djepik, on 07/09/2008, -1/+9Am I missing everyone's sarcasm here?
Bell is still offering Unlimited data at $10 per month as an add on.
How is 6 GB at $30 better than that?- farfromsubtl, on 07/09/2008, -0/+123G, so you can actually USE the bandwidth.
- yabos, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3Because Bell's is only for browsing and email. It doesn't include anything that actually uses a lot of bandwidth such as downloading apps or streaming videos.
- squishybananas, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0The $10 unlimited plans are for 2.5G/EDGE networks; not 3G. Fido has a similar plan for $7/month.
- darkane, on 07/09/2008, -4/+35They didn't listen to the people. They listened to Apple.
- GreenAlien, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1The people kicked off a fuss, it was all over mainstream blogs and TV news, Apple got pissed at the negative press and waved their fists over a conference call with Rogers.
Don't be so quick to discredit the people. - darkane, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1@GreenAlien Rogers listening to Apple because Apple listened to the people is not the same thing as Rogers listening to the people.
- Canuck, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I think they were worried that they wouldn't make some performance markers in the contract and would have to pay Apple penalties. By offering the 6Gb for only a month it means that a lot of people will sign-up thus helping them meet their contractual obligations.
I called to see if I was eligible for the upgrade, but because I've only had my Rogers account for less than a year I am not eligible. So once again the telcos screw over their existing customers and focus on new sign-ups. - GreenAlien, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1@darkanedarkane I never said it was the same thing. You saying they didn't listen to the people was discrediting them. Apple probably wouldnt have acted had it not been for the negative press. And Rogers may of acted based on the negative press anyway without Apple's intervention. Everyone kicking off a stink in person and in blogs, plus the petition numbers, gave the press something to report on.
Don't even know why i'm bothering to argue this minor thing with you. It's not rocket science.

First off this is NOT a good deal, its + $30 on top of the regular phone + service. ROGERS is STILL not giving us a good deal. I have $7 Unlimited, how is $30 a fair deal!?!?!?!?!?!? FOR ONLY 6GB!.
Honestly I hate Canadians I hate Canada, I can't wait till I move to the USA the percentage of stupid people HAS to be lower then here!- TopherT, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1nope, its probably higher over here. I would move to the netherlands or iceland or something.

Anyway, I think the point is that it is a *much better* deal than before. I pay $40 for high speed internet at home, $30gb for a similar service that I can take anywhere with me is something I can live with.
And don't compare it to the $7 a month package, that's like saying you ride a motorbike when all you have is a moped. - MtheoryX, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1"...the percentage of stupid people HAS to be lower then here!"

- Spudster, on 07/09/2008, -1/+15How is it any better? You are still stuck with a 3 year contract and plans that cost over 90 bucks a month.
- The_Ox, on 07/09/2008, -29/+23Not good enough. Insufficient.
- championchap, on 07/09/2008, -2/+7For what?
The second month I had my iPhone I had no internet at home so I was stuck using GSM. we don't even have EDGE in mid Wales!
Anyway!
I was using my iPhone as my promary internet browser, it was like being on dialup again.
I managed to rack up about 600MB Download in that month.
And you're telling me 6GB is not sufficient for a month?
What the hell! Are you going to be using it as a primary browser AND use it to dowload linux distros? - Zaz16, on 07/09/2008, -4/+4It's really about the principle; we're paying more for 6 Gigs where others get unlimited. I agree, I still won't be getting an iPhone at these prices. I don't like the idea of being limited.
- bluesz, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3thats what she said. :(
- cazual, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3So I guess it's not enough for your bittorrent downloads.
- Ligeia, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3Compared to what some other carriers charge for similar plans, it is a very good deal. For example, the most popular carrier in my area here in Canada charges $60 for 1GB of data with their add-on PDA plans and unlimited is $75. Keep in mind that this company does not offer any 3G service and are otherwise very competitive with Rogers' pricing.
In short, this isn't great compared to what is offered in the US, but is great compared to what the Canadian market usually bares.
- championchap, on 07/09/2008, -2/+7For what?
- jonathandyer, on 07/09/2008, -13/+6Rogers still has to step up its data plan (perhaps $30 for 20 gigs or more (They clearly have enough bandwidth for unlimited, they throttle enough P2P to offer it)) and take at least a year off that dreadful contract.
- tsnd, on 07/09/2008, -2/+4Can't please anyone anymore I guess...
I happy with the 6GB, I can't imagine going over especially considering im in wifi 80% of the day - SPECOPS, on 07/09/2008, -0/+12Even AT&Ts "unlimited" plan is soft-capped at 5GB - its in the terms of service (finally).
- vawksel, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2So what happens when you hit 5gb, it just slows down even more?
- nicc, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2is it even possible to download 5GB over EDGE in a month?!
I mean, its not like you would be downloading files... - MtheoryX, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1@nicc:
With the ***** speed of EDGE, it may take you more than a month of downloading to hit 5 GB.
- assbeard, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5OH MY GOD. 20 gigs?! on a phone!? WTF! what the hell are you doing on your goddamn phone that you need 20 gigs of data?!!!?? I barely use 6 gigs on my cable connection at home on 2 PCs.
- jonathandyer, on 07/09/2008, -3/+1It was just a number I pulled, and just because its a cap doesn't mean that you have to reach it... and as for only using 6GB with cable, just having an internet connection must make you happy. And you should use more question marks and exclamation marks as well, because the internet clearly doesn't have enough people using them fully.
- assbeard, on 07/09/2008, -5/+2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How's that, you cheeky bitch? Enough exclamation marks for you?
Sorry If I don't download a linux distro a day like some people.
People like you deserve to get fist ***** in the ass by a big angry black guy just for having the attitude you have.

Limited time? Still using the same BS stats? Damnit Rogers!
Link to release http://micro.newswire.ca/release.cgi?rkey=16070931 ...- rebotfc, on 07/09/2008, -10/+8THREE YEAR CONTRACT WHAT THE ***** IS THIS AN SCIENTOLOGY OR SOMETHING
- tiuk, on 07/09/2008, -0/+16Sadly three year contracts are the norm in Canada.
- MrCoke, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1i have a 2 year contract in canada. will never get 3 year.
- AquaOSX, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2"limited time" is code for "we'll drop this plan once we have ample supply of iPhones"
- GreenAlien, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Firstly an iPod tax which assumes all mp3 users are criminals, and now 3 year contracts just to use a cellphone. I'm starting to build up a picture of Canada!
- Tr3mulant, on 07/10/2008, -1/+0Move to the US. You can has iphonz.
- rebotfc, on 07/09/2008, -10/+8THREE YEAR CONTRACT WHAT THE ***** IS THIS AN SCIENTOLOGY OR SOMETHING
- jrattner1, on 07/09/2008, -15/+7AT&T's Voice, Data, and Text plans are just as *****
- DanBoodro, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1They're actually not too bad.
- Bots, on 07/09/2008, -12/+3i guess the issue is, they listed several stores. Are these the only stores that you can get the discount at?
- Slash0, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2What makes you think that? Those are just the stores that are open at 8AM on launch day.
- elfuego, on 07/09/2008, -10/+39They've made a customer of me. 6GB for on-phone use is more than enough, and $30 added on to my current voice plan is the right price point.
Rogers/Fido should've been offering this from the start, but to suggest that this is anything other than good news is hogwash.- AndrewWiggin, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Can we add this $30 for 6GB to:
1. Any plan?
2. Any plan that started after July 11th and before August 31st?
3. Or any current iPhone plan (making the minimum bill $60 + $30)?
I thought it meant the third option from reading the release, but everyone else seems to think it is 1. or 2.- AndrewWiggin, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1OK I re-read the release and it appears that you can add it to any plan, though I am still unsure if we can add it to our current plans (maybe only if we sign on to a new 3 year contract?).
Here is the exact wording:
"Effective July 11, and as a limited time promotional offer for customers
who activate by August 31 on a three year contract, a data-only offering of
6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any
in-market voice plan." - viruz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2here are my thoughts
you can add it to any plan(including your curent plan), so long as it's one of those plans availble from rogers.com
you cannot add it to grandfathered plans or special plans that are no longer available.
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1OK I re-read the release and it appears that you can add it to any plan, though I am still unsure if we can add it to our current plans (maybe only if we sign on to a new 3 year contract?).
- fk122, on 07/09/2008, -3/+0Agree 100%.
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Can we add this $30 for 6GB to:
- mrtrik, on 07/09/2008, -3/+28I completely feel data should be unlimited - considering the pricing, bu I have just 1 question - how much data do people download on their iphone? I have had mine since Sept 07. Granted it's over EDGE, and there is no appstore, and itunes is wifi only. All that aside... I've downloaded about 600mb data. I use it regularly for email - work and gmail. I use it for maps and web anytime I need it. Granted I tend to stick to iphone/mobile friendly sites - solely because they have less clutter, and usually appear much better anyway. 9 times out of ten when i'm using my iphone for anything I'm on Wifi anyway (home, work, heck, even the commuter train). I don't really use Youtube (off wifi anyway). Am I typical or atypical? I can't fathom using, let alone, needing, 6gb/month of data on my phone (sans wifi).
- superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -0/+10Between 3G, and third party applications, the potential is there for quite a bit heavier use. Consider that browsing alone is 3x faster, making it more likley you'd have probably at least double the browsing bandwidth since you could browse more in the same short time periods...
Still 6GB seems like a very reasonable amount that almost no-one would ever run into. I'd consider it unlimited enough for my needs too. - mrtrik, on 07/09/2008, -2/+8why would someone dig down a question? I'm just being curious... I do believe plans should be unlimited, but curious as to how much people actually need/use.
- longzero, on 07/09/2008, -3/+6Data is never truly unlimited. Even AT&T is capped at 6 GB, so this news is very good.
- ted510, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Except in Thailand and other "third world countries" unlimited really means unlimited.
http://asia.cnet.com/blogs/technology-thailand/pos ...
- ted510, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Except in Thailand and other "third world countries" unlimited really means unlimited.
- briansalo, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1It basically comes down to not going over your limit and then be charged for whatever cents per kb. I agree that a typical user who doesn't do much browsing will probably use around what you use, but I intend on making use of the iRadio app and apparently now there's a program to access the Sirius feeds if you're a paying customer... That's just my reasoning though, and I'd feel a lot safer with a 6gb limit.
- BoneStamp, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I used about 100mb/month on my unlocked iPhone on Rogers. I'm now on an unlimited plan with AT&T and I use slightly less.
- NekoIan, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2So why didn't they just make it unlimited then?
- Nextrix, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I agree with your points, but the point is that Rogers will only be providing this plan for a 1 month time only to get all those contracts signed and locked in, and then they will change it back to the previous plan we all know and hate. People really need to start and critically think about every product on the market, to really be able to understand how much we are getting screwed.
For instance (and I know this is off topic), Bell and Telus announced that it will be charging for all incoming text messages. The reason why they are going to charge us is cause of the costing fees it is taking on them to provide such a service... wait what?! Let me get this straight, we can send about 160 chars (that I am aware of) out per text message, and they usually will compact that data. Supposedly this is costing more than transferring voice data... right... Now I know why I never used text besides for long distance conversations.
- chetanthaker, on 07/09/2008, -7/+1Now do we do the same for AT&T to sell unlocked phones ?
- pitchblack16, on 07/09/2008, -2/+7sweet, now how about apple re-routes that shipment to the uk
- Emachine, on 07/09/2008, -5/+45From $57.50 per GB, to $5 per GB, now that's an improvement. I might actually buy now.
- fuzzymammal, on 07/09/2008, -8/+2What about people running unlocked iphones? I don't want to upgrade to get decent data.
- ChzPlz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3It's available for any phone.
- skaughtm, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1are you sure about that? i don't think it is.
- ChzPlz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3It's available for any phone.
- pradaaddict, on 07/09/2008, -6/+14SOLD! It's far from unlimited but i'll take it. 6gb a month will be hard to burn through if you are light on ye olde YewTubes
- WYendrys, on 07/09/2008, -2/+12well, "unlimited" with most phone companies are capped at 5GBs.
- pradaaddict, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4Thats a soft cap. They won't cut you off or charge you, they instead just call and harass you.
- WYendrys, on 07/09/2008, -2/+12well, "unlimited" with most phone companies are capped at 5GBs.
- Bayan44, on 07/09/2008, -12/+68This is still balls. Trust me when i say rogers will find another way to take your money.
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5How is this balls? It's the same price as what AT&T is offering except we're capped at 6GB (which to me seems like it is practically unlimited... I think it'll be easy to stay under that each month).
- kevingarnett, on 07/09/2008, -2/+4It's balls because this is what will happen. a person thinks...ooo this is MUCH better, (hard pressed to find..., not going to do much better..., blah blah), and they rush to sign right up for 3 years before the deadline, and they are as happy as pigs in *****. After the deadline (I give it 5 months)...they will introduce a new add on for say 25GB/month for another $30 and start dangling that carrot.
...it's either UNLIMITED at the same price of AT&T...or it's *****! They have been treating their customers like ***** for years. And when the customers finally stand up, they grab at the first nugget that comes their way, it's pathetic. - GuyDanger, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Its balls cause first off, it is a limited time offer! Which in turn means they will just screw the next guy. All they're are doing is scrambling to save face but no real change will take place! No thanks Rogers...I have 4 months left on my contract, and I will not renew!
- gavorkian, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2@kevingarnett I'm not sure where you're located, but with Roger's you're able to change your contract. Meaning if they have a better 'add-on' you can change.. and if they say no (which has never happened to me it so many years) you just speak to someone higher and complain.
It's getting OUT of the contract that's difficult.. but not impossible.
I've never had a problem with changing any previous package to take advantage of promotions. - AndrewWiggin, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I think gavorkian is right. If they change a plan around, you can always change your plan to whatever is new. You could also drop this add on at any time I am assuming.
- cdiggy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1yeah.. it's balls because it:
a) still is a 3 year lock in ...***** *****
b) still has a system access fee ...does your grocery store charge you just to enter their store before you even start buying your groceries?? ***** INSANE
c) means you now pay extra for Visual Voicemail ...see, this is where they claw YOUR ***** money back!
IT'S BALLS - DON'T BE SUCKERS!
- mattearle, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4Totally! I deeply hate Rogers and just because they got a little smart with their PR and caved to Apple, I am not going to absolve them of years and years of arrogantly doing the "wrong thing".
- cdiggy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Well put. I especially like your usage of the word "absolve". And yes, this last minute "heroics" (lmao) doesn't heal all the previous wounds they have inflicted upon Canadian consumers. It's like a dude that's kickin' the ***** out of you, he takes a break and offers you a beer, then resumes putting his boot in your ass!

I'm from the states, but man, you guys are seriously getting hammered by those jack asses.- rdolishny, on 07/09/2008, -2/+1I am using an LG shine with unlimited data for seven dollars. And I'm on Rogers. So $30 well I guess that's kinda OK.
But is the browser untethered. Does it force customers to go to rogers homepage? That remains to be seen. And can I download apple aps or does Rogers lock it?
The 11th will be an interesting day.- AndrewWiggin, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4You have unlimited data with Rogers for $7? Yeah, maybe you're right and all the newspapers and news programs and the 40k+ people that signed the petition and the Rogers website missed that and we're all feeling embarassed right now. Maybe you have WAP browsing unlimited? My dad has that for $7.
- skaughtm, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8yeah, but youre seeing ***** mobile websites. it does not equal the full-site browsing capability of the iphone.
- kentifer, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1I pay $20 a month extra on bell for unlimited text messages, unlimited WAP, and a dozen satellite radio stations.
I don't care for the satellite radio, but what the hay. - motolazrimports, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2Answer me this. Can you get an iPhone for Bell???

- superrover, on 07/09/2008, -5/+10Yeah better, but still not where they should be. Rogers, Bell and Telus are running a cartel, Canadian wireless rates are among the highest in the world, and they do it because they can. But as you can see, they do fold under pressure, too bad people wouldn't be as passionate about other things they're gouging us on like features, long distance and roaming.
Oh, and if you think you're paying too much for your plan, you probably are. Just say the magic words "I want to cancel" and if they threaten you with the early cancellation fee, say you don't care because you'll still save money in the long run by switching.- bundwallah, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Hear me now minions!!!
Wow. lots of delusional people digging this down. This guy has got it right. As someone who's been in telecom for the last 15+ years, cellular service is the biggest cash cow going. Cellular infrastructure doesn't cost 1/10th of what landline based phone/data services cost to deploy and maintain. Yet, to the consumer it costs more and it is of substandard quality compared to land lines. The major telcos in Canda are definitely colluding and they are aided by our gov't. Its'a friggin joke that a pair of twisted copper that is >50 years old delivers better quality of service and is still paying dividends today. Cellular services are in the tin can and string stages in comparison. People are sucked in by the "mobility" aspect of the service and are glad to pay hand over fist.
Word of advice, don't buy the Iphone, buy some stock in Telco's. That's where the real value is.

- Nov0, on 07/09/2008, -1/+12They'll do what they always do: increase your bill by $2 a month while at the same time reducing your total bandwidth by 1 GB a month for "quality improvements"
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/09/2008, -0/+10Well if you sign up to the promotion then they can't change it while you're under the contract. They might increase rates for when others sign up though (probably).
- birdman14, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1in 3 years im pretty sure ull get 6 gigs for 10 bux so i doubt they'll increase the rate once your data contract is up.

- R3dRabbit, on 07/09/2008, -13/+4go to rogers and read people.... it's $100 for 6GB!!
- ChzPlz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1No, it's not.
Go here: http://your.rogers.com/investorrelations/news_wire ...
and click on "Calling all iPhone 3G fans!"
This was just released - Rogers hasn't updated their plans on their website yet. - assbeard, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1FAIL
- bouche, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1yeah, I was wondering how much a voice plan would be.
What is the lowest plan worth, and for how many minutes? Their site is getting hammered.
- ChzPlz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1No, it's not.
- dcbebop, on 07/09/2008, -2/+5Why the hell are internet plans bandwidth restricted?
- jsauter, on 07/09/2008, -4/+6Because 5% of users use about 50% of the bandwidth?
- skidooer, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Because when your personal connection is nearly as fast as your ISP's connection to the internet, something has to give. If we want to go back to a slower last mile, you would be free to saturate your link all you want.
- Bots, on 07/09/2008, -4/+2Data costs money. When people use more bandwidth it costs more money.. are you understanding the connection?
- zyl0x, on 07/09/2008, -3/+21Yeah that's like saying that instead of making you saw off both your legs, they'll only make you saw off one leg at the knee. The old plan really sucked balls, and the new one sucks less, but it still sucks.
- spoonchucks, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6They're still ***** you, they're just not aiming for deep penetration anymore. :)
- worldchanger, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2at least they bought some K-Y.
- spoonchucks, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6They're still ***** you, they're just not aiming for deep penetration anymore. :)
- stjoad, on 07/09/2008, -11/+2That's it. I'm getting an iPhone. Glad to see Rogers listened!
- Proctor, on 07/09/2008, -15/+1I use like 2gb on edge every month. Not enough for 3G. I'm not in canada so I could give a ***** less.
- jsauter, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Thanks for letting us know.
- bigmof, on 07/09/2008, -8/+0Victory for Canadians! Sort of. Well I suspect that the U.S. will experience an increase of new citizens from Canada.
- skaughtm, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2its not a victory, its rogers caving for a month and a half. they will have the iphone for YEARS.
- sb66, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1doubt it
- NikoK, on 07/09/2008, -8/+3So an extra 30 dollars just for data? Still absurd if you ask me.
- gquaglia, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3That is pretty much the standard here in the US.
- nightmare1228, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2In the US we are paying $30 for data as well.
- nicc, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2you will be paying $30 for the data on the 3G.
if you use the EDGE version it is still only $20
- nicc, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2you will be paying $30 for the data on the 3G.
- Darrelc, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1It's not too bad. I'm on o2 in the uk and im paying 90$ a month for 1200 minutes, 1400 texts and unlimited data which is normally $15. Not too bad. Not on an iPhone though.
- sayguh, on 07/09/2008, -1/+12So..... I have a $20 a month Fido plan ($27.50 with systemaccess / 911)
Can I add on the $30 so $57.50 for 6GB if I sign a 3 year contract?- sedawk, on 07/09/2008, -0/+12Yes you can
- sayguh, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4well then colour me interested
- wellyuk, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1@sayguh,
That'll be the pink paint then. - sayguh, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Hmm, Bots says you have to have a $30 voice plan to qualify
- ChzPlz, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3Supposebly.
- ChzPlz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1"Did they go to the zoo? Supposebly." :)
- Kevunism, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Nobody has said anything about Fido having the same deal yet. However, I suspect it will be the same, as I read somewhere that they were making the plans the same for Rogers and Fido to avoid mass provider jumping. So yes, in all likelyhood that's how much you'd be paying.
- longzero, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4It is the same deal with Fido
http://www.cnw.ca/fr/releases/archive/July2008/09/ ...
- longzero, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4It is the same deal with Fido
- Bots, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3i just spoke to a rogers rep. I was told that you have to have at least a $30 voice plan in order for the $30 dollar data plan to be applied (read - voice my match or surpass data costs for it to qualify). Not sure if this is true or if Fido has the same restrictions, but its food for thought.
- sayguh, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3Before or after system access/911 fee?
- mrthebunny, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3I don't see that clause anywhere in the press release.
- mrhedges, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but do you want caller ID too? That's another $5-$7. ***** ridiculous.
- cdiggy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1yeah.. ***** ridiculous is right! EVERYTHING else about Rogers is still completely *****
- sedawk, on 07/09/2008, -0/+12Yes you can
- Nextrix, on 07/09/2008, -3/+21How about they provide this deal as an actual plan and not some month promo *****, and then jack the old plans back into action. If we were able to make a large corporate business change it's marketing plan by the masses that are/were boycotting (especially cause of the internet), who knows what we can accomplish if we stick together. This idea was proven this week that if a large group of individuals really are willing to let there voices be hear we can shape this world into a better place. Even though the iPhone is not something that will change the world for the better or anything (well maybe in the minds of the few), the meaning still has a point.
NO DEAL!- skaughtm, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3you're exactly right. what are people so excited about? clamoring on about how we made a change? we made them change for 45 days out of thousands.
- poplsr, on 07/09/2008, -19/+14How the ***** are any of you happy about this? $30 for 6GB? In addition to your $60 plan? Plus $15 for things like voicemail and SMS? So essentially, for $1500 a year you STILL GET SUBSTANTIALLY LESS than AT&T customers get for less than half that. Plus, it's still not unlimited. This is actually slightly more offensive than their previous plan.
- jmnx12, on 07/09/2008, -2/+7well its not 60$+30$ its 30$ data+whatever voice plan you pick that makes me happy
- djepik, on 07/09/2008, -8/+5I don't understand why people think this is a good deal.
Bell is *permanently* offering $10 per month for *unlimited* data.
This is more of a slap in the face than anything.- JnOrris, on 07/09/2008, -0/+7Its 'unlimited' data on phones with mobile web browsers, no youtube/streaming video abilities. That's like saying to someone with an HDTV "Hey I get all the ***** Definition channels for $10 while you are paying $30 for HD!!! ha!"
- assbeard, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4you don't get it. it's not $60 and then another $30 for the 6GB. that $60 plan is a bundl;e. the $30 for 6GB is if you want to make your own "Package" and add data to a voice plan
- stjoad, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5In addition to a $60 plan? I don't know what you're talking about. I have a $20 voice plan, so I'll be paying in the neighbourhood of $75-80 after taxes and fees (with text & caller ID).
Also, Bell's "unlimited" data is specifically for browsing, email, and IM. Streaming/GPS not included.- tiuk, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1That's enough for me, I'd rather not pay $80-90 a month.
- poplsr, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Yeah, well I have a $60 voice plan because I need a $60 voice plan. In itself, that's ridiculous. The $60 AT&T plan would cover all my needs, but once you add up all that stuff on the Rogers plan, it's $100+ a month. This is not a good deal. This is everyone being happy about being slightly less ***** over than they were yesterday.
- davewelsh79, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Are you sure you have a $20 voice plan and not a $27.45 voice plan? The cheapest plan I can find is from Fido and it's $27.45 + tax.
That would run a total of $64.92 per month (tax included) if you got the 6GB plan. It's not horrible, but you have to be happy with 200 anytime minutes. - poplsr, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1And that doesn't include the visual voicemail.
I can't believe how many people are happy about getting ***** like this.
- yabos, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2You don't have to go with the $60+ plans, you can pick whatever plan you want.
- jmnx12, on 07/09/2008, -1/+24an email from andrew sherbin from rogers canada
Hi John,
Glad to hear you like the offer.
The offer is for a limited time, but the other pricing will remain
(iPhone Bundled Plans or any Rogers voice plan + data plan). It is good
for the 3 year term of the contract. Standard policies apply when the
term is over, so it will be dependent on your needs and the pricing we
would have in place at that time.
Cheers!
Andrew - blumpy, on 07/09/2008, -4/+24It's still not unlimited, and it's on available for a limited time. They are just providing the lube for the time being, we are all still be screwed in the long run.
They need to also have something for the casual data users... $10 for 6GB, $30 for unlimited would be something in the ball park that would make alot of users sitting on the fence to go with the iphone.- IronicMoustache, on 07/09/2008, -0/+16Gb for casual use? I've had my iPhone for a year and I've used 1Gb, surfing, e-mail, and some YouTube. You're not tethering this to your laptop, it's just mobile data.
- gquaglia, on 07/09/2008, -5/+10Steve Jobs gets what Steve Job wants. The extortionists at Roger's should have realized that when they signed on with him.
- sulleh, on 07/09/2008, -1/+7I still won't buy. The voice is overpriced, and what about users who sign up outside of the promotional date / users of first-gen iPhones?
- djepik, on 07/09/2008, -14/+16$30 for 6 GB !> $10 for Unlimited (from Bell)
I don't understand why people think this is a good deal.- Kevunism, on 07/09/2008, -3/+14I've read this comment from you 3 times above. Bell does not have 3G. Stop posting this comment.
- johnsea66, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6No, they don't, however they have a better system then Rogers in most places. Take for example in New Brunswick, only one city has 3G for Rogers, and it sucks. So thoose of us in other cities, have to use 100kbit edge on Rogers. However, Bell/Aliant has 700kbit internet that is unlimited for 10 bucks....So ya, Rogers still sucks
- JnOrris, on 07/09/2008, -1/+7Yea buddy you really don't get it. great you have unlimited data on your blackberry with a ***** browser and no multimedia functions, congrats! here's a cookie, now shut up because no one cares.
- djepik, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1I actually just 3 year old phone on which I make 15 text messages and 100 mins of calls per month.
This is just really interesting to me. - LifeSaverS, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2you clearly don't own or have ever used a blackberry
- djepik, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1I actually just 3 year old phone on which I make 15 text messages and 100 mins of calls per month.
- davewelsh79, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6Is Bell's $10 plan really Internet? Or is it just a scam like all Canadian providers have been selling where you only get a limited web access? web != Internet. Internet includes downloading and uploading files, SSH, FTP, POP, IMAP, SMTP, even bittorrent (for all the good it'll do you).
I'm not trying to troll. I'm just too lazy to scour the web trying to find out what Bell is _really_ offering.- viruz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6it's a slightly better scam, it's unlimited browsing + email + streaming "TV" (i believe)
and TV consists of CTV news , CNN and the likes, not real TV like Spike or Space. - djepik, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3what *isn't* included with Bell?
I had no idea it wasn't just straight up internet. - AndrewWiggin, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1What's not included would be programs that use a live connection to the internet (like games that you would play on your computer don't use the internet the same way as your browsing does). For example if a multiplayer game came out for your Bell phone (unlikely, but likely for iPhone) then you couldn't use it.
- viruz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6it's a slightly better scam, it's unlimited browsing + email + streaming "TV" (i believe)
- Kevunism, on 07/09/2008, -3/+14I've read this comment from you 3 times above. Bell does not have 3G. Stop posting this comment.
- sayguh, on 07/09/2008, -4/+2Can anyone explain the "Enterprise" access thing? It's $15 a month in the states to get access to your corporate Exchange data...
I don't see any mention of that on Canadian side... is it included? additional fee? - whitecranberry, on 07/09/2008, -8/+7LOL ROGERS
- freqk, on 07/09/2008, -3/+2LOL INTERNET
- Aerandir, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1LOL IPHONE
- travismacrae, on 07/09/2008, -6/+12Well.. this isn't really "caving". It's a limited offer and still a limited amount of data with uncompetitive rates.
I think the title of this digg is more than a little misleading. -
