Steve Wozniak on the iPod, iPhone and future for Apple
telegraph.co.uk — Interview: Woz thinks that the downgrade on Apple shares was 'correct', doesn't like the limitations on the iPhone 3G, thinks the iPod is near the end of its dominance and thinks there might be an Apple watch in the near future.

- TehDoctor, on 10/08/2008, -2/+16Woz has always had pretty fundamental disagreements with how Apple is run. That's why he doesn't really work there anymore. Jobs is a flaming *****, too controlling.
I'm not saying Apple would be where it is today if Jobs weren't a flaming *****, but he is, and engineers don't like that.- PrometheusBorn, on 10/08/2008, -5/+6Wahhh... I'm an engineer. Wahhhh... don't tell me what I should do with my design, let me just go off on a tangent with your money and design design design.

BTW, I am an engineer. And I appreciate capable leadership and direction leading to business success than a thick headed engineer. - TehDoctor, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4Moron, did you read my whole post? Apple would not exist without that dickface and his rabid desire to sell everything Woz made. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, and I'm not complaining. I'm just explaining why Woz disagrees with a lot of Apple's choices. And honestly, Apple could be run a lot more loosely by Jobs without losing it's flair, but he'd never do it.

- soapandfoam, on 10/08/2008, -2/+3that did catch my eye, the fact that he actually praised the google phone over the 3G phone, I hope he does insist on some of the changes for future iphone apps being open source.
- redwallhp, on 10/08/2008, -0/+5Woz has always been for openness, like the Apple II's open slot-based design. Jobs has leaned more towards sealed-up, non-open systems.

HOLY ***** HEZ A TERRORIZOR!! - pcpimpster, on 10/08/2008, -9/+3Like the innovations of the first Apple computers, the ipod and iphone will be flooded out of the market by standardized, open and cheaper devices. Where the cool factor is now run over by the mainstream practicality of the device as a whole.
Alla Android, Zune, WMobile, etc, etc... etc.
Just watch, the econo box will rule ALL at the current market rates.- MrViklund, on 10/08/2008, -2/+4I can't play my Zune subscription music on my iPod. I think Microsoft has monopoly on Zune marketplace...
- pcpimpster, on 10/08/2008, -3/+2I'm just saying I write apps for Windows and can run them on all their OS tiers without ANY restrictions or permission from MS.
Unlike Apple.
Everyone screams MS monopoly but in all reality as long you drink the 'platform kool-aid' you pretty much get free reign to write software that 90% of all computers can use on their existing machines.
Apple doesn't allow that, Android(Google) and countless others do.
The same mindset that killed Apple in the 80s will kill them now. - MrViklund, on 10/08/2008, -2/+5You don't have to be a part of it if you don't like it. Apple does not want to be a Microsoft and Apple will hardly die. That is just some bitter opinion. If you like Windows. Keep on writing for it. Every one should do what they like.

What? Windows Mobile has had many years in the mobile market space, and over the last few years it's market share has almost HALVED ( from 20% down to 12% of the market).
At least try to do some background reading before you just make up random *****.
- pcpimpster, on 10/08/2008, -4/+2Only because those are a fairly new market, once the market flat lines in growth you will see more flexible, open devices taking the most share.

The dominance won't end until there's a proper competitor to compete with iPod... and I'm not seeing it.

- aydoubleyou, on 10/08/2008, -3/+10From the end of the article:
"Consumers aren't getting all they want when companies are very proprietary and lock their products down," he says when comparing the iPhone's closed operating system to the new Google phone's open source system which allows anyone to modify and adapt the way the phone works. "I would like to write some more powerful apps than what you're allowed," he laments. - Twee, on 10/08/2008, -4/+4It's funny that Woz says "I would like to write some more powerful apps than what are allowed." If anyone, he could get whatever app he writes up onto the app store even if it breaks the rules of the SDK. Hell, he could probably get his app bundled with the next iPhone software upgrade. Lets hope that Woz can convince Apple to open up the app store a bit!
- MrViklund, on 10/08/2008, -3/+2Open up for what?
- RobotBuddha, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3I don't think he'd have any fun, or satisfaction in doing it like that though.
- Solstice, on 10/08/2008, -5/+4Woz, you were on the board of directors for Danger, Inc - the OS that powers the Sidekick. That platform is just as closed (if not more) than the iPhone. You had your chance to develop a truly open mobile platform. Why didn't you have that complaint with them?
- mrBitch, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1Good point, and Microsoft now owns Sidekick.

- pcpimpster, on 10/08/2008, -3/+1I'm not saying Apple will die, i kind of said that in my first post. Sorry.
All I'm saying is they wont be the defacto for the two devices once those markets flat out.
For the simple fact that Apple controls the environment to such extents that it will eventually shut out innovation and usability.
Who knows. buy what you like, i like those new ipod commercials with the bleeding colors. - Michaelabehsera, on 10/08/2008, -5/+9Hands down one of the smartest ppl of the century

- pixelguru, on 10/08/2008, -4/+3What's a watch?
- edalytical, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2Really that's not far from reality! I don't know of a single person that wears one. I already have a cell phone that tells me time. I don't need another device to duplicated functionality I already have.
On the other hand, a simple remote control might be nice for things like snowboarding. This device would attach to the outside of my glove and would enable me to control my iPod, or make calls from my iPhone while on the mountain. That way, I'd have no need to remove my gloves and fish my iPhone out of some pocket.- artofficial, on 10/08/2008, -1/+2I don't know about you man but when I hit up some backcountry I turn all that ***** off.
- GreenWolf21, on 10/08/2008, -0/+0I hope they make them all shiny and iced out. bling bling
- Me1000, on 10/08/2008, -1/+1artofficial... You aren't going far enough backcountry then, because when I hit up some backcountry I don't even get a signal so i use my phone for the sole purpose of telling time.
- RobotBuddha, on 10/08/2008, -2/+1They're the little things that can tell you time while a plane is taking off or landing. Pretty much the only moments I've ever found myself wishing I had one.
- Me1000, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1You could just look at your phone... Contrary to popular belief, you will not crash the plane if you have an electronic device turned on...
- edalytical, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2Really that's not far from reality! I don't know of a single person that wears one. I already have a cell phone that tells me time. I don't need another device to duplicated functionality I already have.
- chadadams, on 10/08/2008, -5/+3Woz your great! But I have to disagree, I do agree that maybe the "traditional" iPod classic style mp3 player will go away, but it will be replaced by the iPhone. Heck, Sony knew this when they killed the Clie PDAs, and moved into "music" cell phones. There will still be iPods, nanos if nothing else for the fitness crowd that doesn't want to smash up an iPhone.
One more thing to note: RIM, Microsoft, (especially) Palm!! Get off your asses and make something we crave to buy! Android is already better than you mp3 player and mobile browser wise!! - lebondarken, on 10/08/2008, -8/+2I wonder if Jobs is going to downgrade Woz back to OS9 for this.
- Wilddigi, on 10/08/2008, -8/+1Like the moron replied me, Why would he know?
- puzzud, on 10/08/2008, -1/+1I've considered the conventional cell phone design being replaced with a wrist watch design.
Just think about how 'big' portable time pieces must have been when they came out. And just as you throw your cell phone in your pocket, so did the gentlemen of yesterday throw their pocket watches in their... well pockets.
Technology got smaller and then they were fastened to wrists for convenience. I've wondered when we'd start toting our computers on our wrists ala Predator.- RobotBuddha, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1It's easy enough to get a wrist strap to hold a touchscreen smart phone. The fact that any woman within eyesight will run away at top speed makes it a less than desirable choice though.
- Norumeni, on 10/08/2008, -1/+1Oh GOD NO! I hate wristwatches!!!!!!!!!!!!! Putting a cell phone in a wrist watch is the stupidest idea EVER! If it weren't for my cell phone, I would be a wreck from being nervous of the time, because wrist watches are ugly, uncomfortable and overpriced.

Free international shipping. Superior customer service. Not so sure about the quality of the gadgets though, but most are adequate.
- daschupa, on 10/08/2008, -6/+1As long as Apple keeps throwing in more crap into Ipods and making them purty and fashionable, their reign of dominance won't quit anytime soon.
- MrViklund, on 10/08/2008, -12/+2Apple is the best company ever!
- dave_colorado, on 10/08/2008, -6/+12honestly, woz is tiring these days. what does he even contribute anymore than asinine analysis?
if he's got so many great ideas he should go out and build them. i'm so tired of this guy. thanks for your contributions 30 years ago. Now what have you done for me lately?- Galaxylander, on 10/08/2008, -2/+5I agree, and I love how he's doing market predictions for Apple, when Woz himself has admitted that he sucks ass at marketing anything. Apple never would've taken off without Jobs to market it.
- RobotBuddha, on 10/08/2008, -2/+2I don't know about you, but if I was rich I'd love to make my official job complaining about technology in general, and apple in particular. That's way more fun than actually writing code.
- SealHammer, on 10/08/2008, -8/+4Apple is an OK company, but Jobs is a jackass. The Woz is one cool dude though, and I have to agree with him, too. The only people who buy Apple's ***** anymore are the 8-year-olds who don't even understand what an mp3 is.

- ATLien74, on 10/08/2008, -2/+9The Woz, telling it like it is! I love this guy!
- choppergirl, on 10/08/2008, -4/+1Woz hasn't written a single line of damn assembly code in 20 years. So uh... treating him like a fat hacker hero from a bygone era is a bit much. His motherboard bumming hacks to save chips were actually a pain in the ass down the road, when programmers had to code around all that crap. Lets start with how video memory was laid out in a ***** up fashiion on the Apple ][, and then we can go spiralling down the toilet bowl of programming techniques from there.
- bipolarruledout, on 10/08/2008, -1/+2All of intelligence with less vapid cool and smug.
- superjamie, on 10/08/2008, -2/+3Why do people keep asking Woz about Apple? The turtleneck-sweater company who make iPods and iPhones is vastly different to the company he and Jobs started, making Apple IIs in his garage. Buried, irrelevant.
- hongkongjapie, on 10/08/2008, -2/+3Does anyone still care about what 'the Woz' has to say? I admit, he had a big hand in the creation of Apple and was a good engineer and developer, but besides the initial apple products what else can we tribute to woz? The universal remote and segway polo?
Although I would love to see Apple moves away from tightly controlling every aspect of their platforms, Apple as it is today is a reflexion of Steve and not Woz. As seeing the end of ipod dominance? Here in Australia it seems like half of the electric appliances sold nowadays have an ipod dock, haven't ever seen a zune dock or even someone with a zune. If somebody has an mp3 player other than ipod it is most often their mobile or a no-name cheapo chinese thingy. Maybe the market in the US is different or I manage to look at the wrong places. Does anyone have a reliable marketshare pie of mp3 players?- nafnosseb, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1hey hongkongjapie...Australia you say?
- kreatre2007, on 10/08/2008, -3/+2Steve Wozniak created the products that launched Apple. It it were not for Wozniak, Apple may not even exist today. That being said, I am very thankful that Steve Wozniak put so much commitment and creativity into building wonderful and innovative designs. However... He needs to shut the hell up. He's a bit late to the party on this one. Apple is well aware of the things that he is talking about. That's why they are slowly transitioning the iPod into less than just a music and video player but, also a gaming and communications device. Apple knows how to evolve and grow. Wozniak did not. That's one of many reasons why he left Apple.
- fraul, on 10/08/2008, -8/+2I don't know why people give a damn about Woz. I couldn't care less for his opinions about anything.
