Syncing Google Calendar With iCal
googletutor.com — Google calendar can be a great tool for organizing your life. However, sometimes you would still want to use your own desktop application. Apple ’s iCal, which is built-into Mac OS X, can be used to subscribe to your Google Calendar, and will automatically check Google Calendar every few minutes to check for new items.

- shyguy01, on 10/16/2007, -0/+61To me, syncing implies two-way: this is still just one-way
- duzbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was going to say the same thing, I would love to be able to edit the calender from iCal.
One advantage is that it is then put onto your iPod.
I am not Digging the story, reason, there are instructions for this on the Google calender web site. - ggriffit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, a true sync would upload and download. Like the nonexistent IMAP Gmail.
A much better, free solution I use it icalx.com
Free, fast and simple. This way I can have a calendar that when I modify my other computers, my family and friends all get the changes. Plus you can password protect certain calendars for private use. - mikepictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1worse, it only synchs additions, not deletions. If you delete your google entry, the deletion will not carry down to iCal.
When I realized that, is when I stopped bothering trying to synch.

- bettaa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I concur...spanning sync, ftw!
- xjebbx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Spanning Sync is perfect, and as i can tell flawless.
- furyg3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@xjebbx
Uhh, not flawless.
#1 You will have to pay for it. Yes that's a flaw.
#2 It's in beta, and registration is closed for the beta testing group.
#3 Being in Beta, it has lots of bugs.
Hopefully Google will roll support for syncing gCal with iCal in a future version of Google Notifier (or other standalone app). - xjebbx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@furyg3
As far as i can tell, i have noticed no bugs, (doesn't mean they are not there).
either way it has worked perfectly for me.
- jeremiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This also works with any ical formatted datasource - I have my group events @ http://www.meetup.org pulled into a google calendar layer.
- trump48257, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Yea like 36linescreen said check out SpanningSync. It just entered public Beta today. I've been in on the private beta for a couple months and it rocks. It does sync BOTH WAYS. You can set up your iCal to sync with google at predetermined intervals and sync specific calendars on google with specific ones on iCal.

Here is the link to download the public beta:

And here is a TUAW article about it:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/01/30/spanning-sync-announces-public-beta/ - iNunchuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone know what port spanning sync program uses? I've been trying to "sync" but it says that there is an error connecting.
- r3neGaDe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not sure what port it uses but I'd try attempting to sync a few more times, that's what ended up working for me. If that doesn't work, it might be their servers. According to the post on SpanningSync's blog:
"The bad news is the servers are straining a bit under the load. More than four times as many users have performed a sync in the last three hours than in any previous 24-hour period. On average, that means we've seen a 3,200% increase in traffic since the public beta opened.
We'll be adding some additional hardware tomorrow." - mbradbury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@r3neGaDe
Why would syncing my machine and Google Calendar affect their servers? surely its not syncing via there server with my gmail username and password. or is it?

- indiekid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4SpanningSync is the way to go all the way...it works sooo well!
- Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is there any such thing for Pocket PCs? I have a Dell Axim on the way which should arrive this week, and I was wondering if there was a way to sync it up with Google Calendar.
- Sferrero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea, Check out GooSync I've been using it for a while now and it does Two-Way Synching quite well. I actually use it to sync my Outlook calendar with Google.
Outlook < ---- > Pocket PC < ---- > GooSync < ---- > Google
http://www.goosync.com/ - Sferrero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a side note, I believe GooSync requires an internet connection on the handheld device.
Works for regular Cell Phones, and other handhelds not just Pocket PC - Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahh, awesome, thanks. The axim I'm getting does have wireless internet so I should be fine. Thanks for the tip. Gonna try it out with outlook now.

- stupidbrowner, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Anyone have any good suggestions of doing this in windoze or linux?
- ptFoe, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Since when was iCal available on Windoze or Linuts?
- badriram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4both the new outlook and the windows calendar application (vista) support ical with webdav support
- crescentmage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://www.syncmycal.com/ works pretty well for syncing Outlook with Google. The trial version limits you to 3 days from the current day, but otherwise is fully functional.
- Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Linux calendars compatible with Apple's iCal: ical, Java iCal, Calcium, Chandler, Evolution, Kontact (KOrganizer), Sunbird. For Windows: Java iCal, Outlook, and Sunbird.
- concertina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@stupidbrowner
If you're using linux + gnome + evolution, you can use the SyncEvolution plugin, but only offers read-only access.
http://www.estamos.de/projects/SyncML/
I believe you used to be able to subscribe directly to google calendars in Mozilla Sunbird, but I don't think that works with the latest versions. - jvicinanza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3$25 is pretty expensive for an Outlook plugin!
- isaiah1112, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This feature of Google Calendar is just awesome. It makes keeping my three workstations up-to-date with my most recent appointments. Even though I wish there was a "backwards" sync allowing editing of events in iCal this still makes my life 100x easier to organize.
- MacsBaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Google just needs to add a task list, PLEASE!
- trump48257, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isaiah, SpanningSync that many of us are talking about does just that.
- rot13ubercrypto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Still waiting for a good way to do two-way iCal synch with a private calendar (e.g. PHProjekt or HORDE.) Last I checked (October) it was one of those things many were bitching about but nobody had yet figured out how to do...
- erictheninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Buried for being lame. You're just downloading your Google Calendar into iCal. This is a feature that's been available since Google Calendar was introduced and is no different than subscribing to a calendar on any other WebDAV server.
This is not synchronizing, it is subscribing.
Check out spanning sync like everyone else has said. - JPhilipson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I didn't know they started posting common sense stuff on digg. 'Is that what subscribing is?'
I'm going to post an article on digg. "How to subscribe to any calendar, not just Google!"
Lame... - benliong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3While Spanning sync is great and all (I downloaded the beta but wasn't in the private beta group so it's just sitting on the status bar doing nothing), it would have been better if it was a isync plug-in. As far as I'm concerned, I don't need another application to do sync, especially when there's a perfectly good one (isync) that does ical synchronization with plug in architecture.
The only reason I can think of for them to have to do that, is that there is no protection for isync. Users can simply copy the plug in and give it to their friends. Perhaps with their own application, they can have a lot more control to minimize piracy. - LMN8R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blah, all I need now is a tool to sync Google Calendars with Rainlendar and I'm set.
- redberger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0i sync basecamp project schedules and google calendar to my ic MBP's icalendar and then sync it into my my sony eric ericson phone so i can check my sched on the go.
- mrbenns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1would be nice to use this as a way to sync Gcal with Ical and therefore with Yahoo Cal, which my 3G provider insists on using :)
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is not sync, it is a bog-standard iCal subscription. Marked as inaccurate.
- mekanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1watch the video:
http://spanningsync.com/screencasts/intro/
It syncs your google calendar with your ical, and vice versa. Changes in google show up in ical, changes in ical show up in google. It isn't just subscription.
- mekanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1watch the video:
- senne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've used this for some months now. My iCal syncs automatically with Google Calendars and my iPod automatically syncs with iCal. That's some syncing!
- vector13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think a lot of people are in the same boat as me. They want to use iCal at home but want to be able to edit their data on the web when they are at work and away from their home machine. This article describes exactly I've been doing while I wait for spanning sync to be finalized. I use google calendar as my main calender at home and at work, subscribe to it in iCal and then use isync to sync my ipod and nokia 6131.
In a perfect world I could use iCal at home, gCal away while at work have those two stay in sync. Then I would also be able to download the most up to date version of from google to my phone. 1 way download would be a good start. Real two way would be great. Gcalysnc (http://www.gcalsync.com/) doesn't seem to like Cingular's WAP connection
