- Shiftgood, on 10/12/2007, -22/+8I wonder if the folks at apple saw the shininess of Vista and then looked at a shiny leopard and said.. "*****, we need to make it not look so shiny and stupid like they did... we'll hafta delay it while we re-dress it to not look like our imitators to stay ahead of the curve"
just a thought - Disko, on 10/12/2007, -23/+9@ jus1haz2
Don't link directly do Joy of tech comics, link to the page they're hosted on. They need those ad views to keep the site up. - atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19@Disko
It's kind of hard to view their ads when the site doesn't load. Guess they need more ads to get a better server. - mcorto, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Haha! Cool!
- ipodsweatshop, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8Apple just wanted to show business customers that they still operate like a small computer shop and scare them away forever. I mean, I want to buy an OS that's backed by a company that will put it hold FOR A PRETTY PHONE.
Good job Apple. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3@ipodsweatshop:
Vista was delayed like 5 years. OS X Tiger is still excellent. Nothing in Leopard even looks that appealing to me. - ronaldb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ipodsweatshop:

Apple's Time Machine can only revert to a point after Time Machine was installed/confgured.
This is one of the theories about how time travel would work (if it ever does). The most popular theories state that only information, not matter can travel through time (Sorry). - crh3f, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16@Electrobot:
Way to bring things down, dude. It was a JOKE. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11What would happen?
Marty would be stuck in 1965 forever!!! - RexMaxus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@Ireland
Actually, Marty went from 1985 to 1955. Then back to 1985, back to 1955 and finally to 1885. Then he got the girl, destroyed the time machine and graduated high school of the young age of what seemed to be at least 25.
Man, I am way too much of a nerd... - zetaRegnif, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Granted that's a worst case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to merely our own galaxy.
- corvairkid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0@ rexmaxus
BTF - 1985 to 1955 to 1985
BTF II - 1985 to 2015 to 1955 to Biff's alternate 1985 to 1955
BTF III - 1955 to 1885 to 1985
So much of a nerd you forgot the second movie. - corvairkid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Damn edit.
BTF II should be 1985 to 2015, old Biff takes the DeLorean to 1955 then back to 2015. 2015 to alternate 1985 to 1955. - RexMaxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@corvairkid
You're right!
I think I forgot the second movie because I don't really like it very much. The first was great, and the third was all about Doc (FTW!). Number two was very 'we-need-a-new-movie-to-make-money' feeling.

I suspect it may apply to you ;) - hdtvdust, on 10/12/2007, -33/+30The only people who agree with you are those that have never used Vista.
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -40/+16Well Vistas main feature list is a carbon copy of Tigers so yeah I can see why they would think that.
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -33/+66Digg me down, but I'm running Vista Ultimate and it really isn't that bad, especially with ReadyBoost.
- ZebraCrew, on 10/12/2007, -30/+8I'm inclined to agree with renegade. I've used Vista, not extensively but enough to know there isn't anything in it to justify how long it was delayed. Also, they mostly took programs and ideas that were already done in Tiger.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16Took them?
Look at PDC 03 guys, all this tech was there, before Tiger shipped (Hell, before we knew Tiger existed). - ZebraCrew, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2Ok Ramble, so they redid ideas that are even older than tiger. That doesn't really help your cause that much (it helps it none, in fact).
- golgotha, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3With ReadyBoost? Do you have any idea what ReadyBoost is?
ReadyBoost is simply a poor man's method to having more memory.
RAM prices are cheap. What's the point of ReadyBoost? It reminds me of hard drive compression software like Stacker, back in the day, which was just a poor man's method of having more hard drive space at the cost of system performance. - kawera, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I'm the happy owner of both a Mac and a PC, and in my completely insignificant opinion Vista is a solid OS. I've had zero problems so far, and in conjunction with the new version of Office, it's actually both pleasing to look at and a joy to work with. The only thing missing is a stabile virtual desktop manager. I'm certainly looking forward to the implementation of that in Leopard.

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2002/07/12 - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I have a macbook with Vista Ultimate installed and the only reason I boot up into OS X now is because it's where my music is. I don't know about the general consensus of make users, but I'd take Vista over 10.4 any day. Even 10.5 doesn't look that appealing to me actually.
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4I gotta disagree. I use a MacBook Pro running OS X as my primary machine and its a piece of *****, at least if you're a power user. For the computer illiterate or if you don't want to do anything other than check email, manage photos, and browse the internet; its a wonderful OS that is better than Windows.
I'm currently running XP in Boot Camp/Parallels and on my Windows desktop, but I tried one of the RC's of Vista and it was pretty badass other than the graphic drivers sucking. I'll probably upgrade to Vista Ultimate once the graphic drivers are up to date. - popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@crh3f
Ah good ol' PA. It speaks the truth once again. - Refrag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2crh3f, the funny thing about that comic is that both of the PA guys are now Mac users.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"I'm running Vista Ultimate and it really isn't that bad" - theMurdocVolta
"Not that bad" seems to be the general consensus of Vista based on the reviews I've read. "Not that bad" is typically not a good sign, but sadly enough to Windows users "not that bad" is a very good thing indeed.
Is "not that bad" the best Microsoft can do? Apparently so.
(Disclaimer: I'm still using XP - haven't tried Vista myself yet) - theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Disclaimer: I'm still using XP - haven't tried Vista myself yet"

- marksmayo, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30Digg this comment down. Joy Of Tech posted recently about how digg had direct linked to the comics before, and it is actually quite harmful to them - they rely on advertising, and you're bypassing them just to get the free comic which they put time and effort into. I used to use FreeBSD, but got tired of crap not running on my box and taking 5 hours to get any new hardware I buy working (ie wireless cards are the devil)

Hilarious and true for the BSD's and Linux's out there too, not just Mac!- ZebraCrew, on 10/12/2007, -22/+5Good luck getting all your games to work on vista like they did on XP. From what i've heard from a friend it's hell trying to make games act the way they should on Vista. Mind you, this is what i've been told so if it isn't correct you have an issue with a fellow PC user, not with me.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13All my games work fine.
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Mine too, amazing!
- pengu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1I'd take that one 5 hours of getting something to work over 2 hours a day lost productivity because of windows.

- Smills, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yup, all my games work fine on Vista too. Black and White 2, Prey, Call of Duty 2, Quake IV, Unreal Tournament 2004, FEAR, Command and Conquer 3, Company of Heroes, and so on. I think that Vista does need to be tried before criticized.

- Qwiggalo, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8My Audigy 2 ZS's Vista drivers are bugged but least I didn't spend 3000$ on a slower Mac then on my 1200$ PC to find that out.
- ZebraCrew, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Really? i'd like to see the comparative specs on the two machines you're referring to. And if you built your own then of course it was cheaper. That's the price you pay for having someone build it for you (however, it doesn't bother me really).
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's THAN. Why do some people have so much trouble with this?
- Qwiggalo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dells are cheaper then Macs.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
2x1GB DDR2 PC2-6400
GeForce 7950GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
I have my Your You're Its It's To Toos down but not Except Accept or Then and Than. English language is retarded, and you will always understand what I mean using then or than. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you really want to compare a CoreDuo with a quad core xeon?
Come back when you do a real comparison - Qwiggalo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not comparing my medium-high grade PC to the ultra immense grade MacPros which are 12,000$.
I can compare them to the suggested MacPros that cost 2500$
Let's see here smart guy,
Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors
4MB shared L2 cache per processor
1.33GHz, 64-bit dual independent frontside buses
• I'll have to admit its got me beat on that.
1GB (two 512MB) of 667MHz DDR2 ECC fully buffered DIMM
• Faster RAM (Mine clocks at 400MHz), but I've got 1GB more
Display: N/A
• I could throw in my Dual Monitors (which are run comfortably at 1600x1200 70Hz) I bought for 300$ each and still spend less money.
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with 256MB of GDDR2 SDRAM (single-link DVI / dual-link DVI)
• Oh man, no contest amirite? But what's a Mac need a Graphics Card for imeansrslylolroflmayoWoW
250GB Serial ATA (3Gb/s); 7200 rpm; 8MB cache
• Slap my ass and call me a macparrot, look at that... NOT only do I have twice the space, but my cache is twice the size!
16x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
• I was sure my cheap-o 30$ DVD Drive I bought was gonna be worse, but to my surprise I guess I was wrong! Honestly, I'm not too sure what "SuperDrive" is suppose to mean, but I was given specific knowledge about my OEM DVD Drive when I bought it, http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16827131047
Ok, _I_ did my research, what about yours? BTW it's Core 2 Duo, not CoreDuo.

- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Those that can do. Those that can't, teach. Those that can neither do or teach go onto social engineering tech sites and complain. As someone said earlier, what's your URL for your comics again?
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Joy Of Tech, amateur? What?
- cartoonboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry, I haven't checked this thread for a few days, so pardon the delay.
@macparrot No, I don't teach, but I've been cartooning very successfully for 20 years now and know ***** when I see it -- especially if I produce it. I'd be embarrassed to put that crap out. Would I ever give you my URL? Probably not, because if you're so visually illiterate you have to be an apologist for mediocre cartooning, it would be like casting "pearls before swine."
My advice to "The Joy of Tech": Try the "Joy of Drawing Lessons".
- lopla, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4OSX Tiger is already ahead of Vista in all respects so big whup on a Leopard delay.. And I am an MSCE who is stuck evaluating WinXP, OSX Tiger, Vista, Linux and I have to say the company will not be going to Vista and is leaning towards Linux on Mac hardware now. So yeah I am screwed and now no fanboy of msft afterall who do you think just screwed me? Vista is basically windows ME with a glossy theme. It's nothing sort of an abomination.
- willwander, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15your evaluating OS's for your company, and you think vista is ME with a glossy theme..sheesh, god help your company
- dscx, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1What the hell is the point of an MSCE anyway if your not using Microsoft products. Also playing with Linux on your Mac hardware is one thing at home, but buying a load of licenses for a business and then not using them is just about the most stupid thing I've heard for ages. If you are in-house IT, save yourself some work an just leave OS X installed, all the employees would hate you otherwise anyway.
P.S. I have evaluated Vista too though and have to agree with your conclusion, it's junk. People seem to be getting dug down for saying Tiger is better than Vista today (oh how fickle digg can be) but I'll state it anyway.

It wasn't funny, it wasn't clever (Vista sucks har har, that's reeeal original), and the drawing sucks.- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Yeah! Your comic that you showed is so much better! Oh wait...
- casidnet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@macparrot
I can't draw. I also doubt I could write a funny comic.
Doesn't mean I don't know a horrible comic when I see one.
I avoid creating a webcomic for the above facts. Methinks these people should too. - Snaggy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1FYI, this particular Joy of Tech comic's drawing style is intentionally childlike. There was no need for complicated drawings on this comic, in fact, they would have just complicated this comic. The wistfull illustrations add a sence of playfullness and fun to the comic's text, which is essentially a top ten list.
Once the digging is over, feel free to check out Nitrozac's other work, I think you'll find lots you'll like. - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At the risk of being dug down, "intentionally childlike" means not traced over existing images, like the majority of JOT comics are. Top Reason: Apple decided they could make more money getting Apple fans to buy their $500 phone than buy their $130 OS upgrade.- ZebraCrew, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Probably, iPod fans more than Apple fans. It seems like alot of the Apple fans are either pissed that they went with the iPhone first or simply don't care about the damn thing. (i for one don't care about the damn thing)
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I would agree. The iPhone doesn't have anything I want as I use a cell phone to (GASP!) make calls and the iPhone's storage limitations makes it a pretty sucky iPod.
As far as 10.5 delays goes. 10.4 works pretty good for me so I'll wait (like I have a choice or anything)
- radius7, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Alright ppl , its time to switch to Ubuntu ....
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4C'mon man, "ubuntu" is SOO last season's Digg comment buzzword. All the hipsters have moved on to rabidly supporting one pay OS or the other, get with the times. But for your benefit, i'll say this: it's way more hip to support the pay OS that less than 5% of the world uses. Apple is like terrible indie music, digg? It's a pretty safe bet to rave about OSX, because it'll never have the majority market share. But be warned, if it does, Windows is going to become the new "in" thing.
You have to stay on top of these things if you want to be cool on the internet, man.
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4C'mon man, "ubuntu" is SOO last season's Digg comment buzzword. All the hipsters have moved on to rabidly supporting one pay OS or the other, get with the times. - jenniw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It's probably more fun to play with the iPhone than dig through a gazillion lines of nested code indeed...
- tuzziel, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Vista needs to get rid-off that depresing black windows. Cleanliness of mostly while OSX is just way better for most of us.
In the XP you had that "silver scheme" that was just right, but not in Vista, there you have no choice, but to go with the default (yes, you can change the colours of the windows, but the all the other options are worse then the defaults).- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I might have dugg what you said if I had any idea what that might have been...
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Black windows??? I don't know what screenshots you have been looking at, but I don't think they were screenshots of Vista. The taskbar & start menu is black, but the windows (TB + border) are either glassy or white or any colour you like, hey that rhymes. With you saying the theme looks depressing, I'm wondering if you were actually looking at the new Leopard theme, though that's not black either, just dark dull grey.
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So if you don't like black, why don't you pick your own? If you don't like the other defaults, why don't you make your own color...you can do that. Or is that not user friendly enuf for you?
- shawnz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sir, I believe that's called ruining the punch line.
- doctorweird, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Bury As Lame
- CrushThemTorg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Here's a brief summary:
"Hay guyz, iPhone."
"rofl." - vintechsys, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Steve Jobs: "Whew!, we no longer need to rush our OS because vista sucks." "Our 5% market share is safe."
- zaqintosh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4It's quite frustrating, as nice as OSX is ... I'll never use it. Not as long as it forces Apple hardware on me. It's the same kind of crap Sony pulls in almost every industry.
Yes I know OSX can installed with a patch on normal PC hardware... yes I've tried it.. it's a bitch and a lot of motherboards / peripherals don't work on it.
Anyhow, wake up apple, let consumers decide what to do with OSX. I don't need to buy a computer that looks like the space shuttle to enjoy it. - SuperSunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Then Apple isn't for you. That is all, period. Don't complain, stick to whatever you use, and let those that use it, use it. I for one accept my new MacBook overlord.
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2to whom are you replying? moreover, why is your out of context comment being dugg up?
- everybod, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Actually, the real reason it is delayed is because of the new touchscreen technology they are working into Leopard.
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4yea, thats a fair upgrade right? Why just upgrade to the new OS, buy a whole new touch sensitive computer. Only 3000 dollars. Since you have no problem with that, why don't you buy me one too?
- everybod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Send me your address.
- ImASpartan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Does it bother anyone else that the #1 dugg story at the moment is an unfunny comic? Why do people digg an item just because it has the word 'Mac' in it?
- Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Because it's cool to lay into Microsoft and Apple ***** golden roses.
- LIQUIDMASS, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6LMFAO! lookit the Microsoft fanboys get all angry.. HAHAHAHAHAHHA.. thats why we digg these articles cus it gets your pantys in a bunch! HAH! VISTA WAS 6 YEARS LATE! 6 ***** YEARS!
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In all fairness liquidmass, Vista was not 6 years late unless it was supposed to come out a week after XP was released. Vista was 2 years late tops. Since 10.5 was originally scheduled for October 06, many could (and probably will) consider that it is late by at least a year.
I don't use Vista (or any flavor of Windows at home) so it never bothered me. Not sure why it would bother you if you use Macs at home. The first step to a better digg is not to be an OS troll. Make fun of others who are if you wish, but at least try to be objective with your comments.

- greenmountain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The pressure really is on Apple now, as they have effectively said, this phone is our number one priority.
This period of Vista's clunky start could have been one of startling growth for Apple, instead, they have everyone wondering what is up. Vista's lousy press is the big reason Leopard needed to be on the market last fall, as it would have motivated a lot of switching.
All Apple really had to do was make it pretty, a different look, waive it around before Christmas.
"While you are waiting for Vista, check this out..."
The thing is, all of us get the fever for something different, even if it is working. I am about to check out Vista, even though XP is rock solid. I check out each new Ubuntu release. Basically, the "Ooooo a New OS" fever is on, and Apple is not there.
Americans do this with everything, everyone has traded in a perfectly good car, folks tear apart perfectly good kitchens and baths to change the color of the sink,we move to bigger fancier houses we don't need.
This phone, who needs that? iPhone customers already have an mp3 player,an iPod,a cell phone, a computer, and a CD player, and a CD writer, and a car stereo, etc. These are luxury items, baubles that Apple has made number one priority. This strange announcement has generated bad will from the true faithful for the first time in a while.
While Apple sits still, Vista will be on 150-200 million machines by the end of the year. 150 million chances to change minds, a strong base of folks who will be able to say what it is, rather than what they have heard.- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uh, who cares how many machines vista winds up on by the end of the year? microsoft already has a 93% market share, and that won't be changing. they don't NEED to impress. Apple, with its sub 5% share, should really be working on wowing people, however. unfortunately for them, they're too busy cranking out ludicrously expensive phones with no talk time.
- LIQUIDMASS, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Screw the iPhone.
- thesoze, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Jobs should have named it iOwnU
- BLACKEAGLE, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2mac=fag
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hmmmm, you seem to have problems with basic math. Let's see, that's pi divided by 12 carry the 4...OK got it!
blackeagle=moron
Fixed it for you! You're welcome.

- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ROTFLMFAO, let's go buy socks for our ipods dude.
- fLUx1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn I want my macbook SOOOO bad!! lol
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1let's go get loans and buy some ridiculously expensive laptops that will burn our legs and discolor after mild use!! lol2
- bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 I love how they blamed it partly on Time Machine. That worked out well. I wonder though if you can go forward in time. If you time machine a file, into the present with the same file name, will it write over it? If so then could you go back before you grabbed the old file and brought it to the present? Or will You need Dimension Machine, where you go to the dimension where you didn't in fact get the file from the past and bring it to the present...
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1spoiled it in the description :(
- Wandel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Top voted reason in the poll: There you go, Apple copying Microsoft again.
Just sayin'...
