- DarkDx, on 11/05/2007, -5/+4I see what you did there.
- suprfli, on 10/31/2007, -0/+9I think this is the best tip out of all of them:
"My favorite feature of Leopard is the ability to create widgets with Safari. I made widgets ouf of the site traffic reports that I track. Now I just go to Dashboard and see four widgets instead of going to four web pages. Here’s how: Safari—>File menu—>Open in Dashboard. "
I don't use widgets that often but now that I can more easily create my own from the EXACT content I want I'll start using it more often.- christor, on 10/31/2007, -0/+7I made one for xkcd - I only wish there was a way (maybe there is and I'm not finding it), without resorting to dashcode, to scale the clipping so that it doesn't take up so much space. I'd love to have several webclips that could be clicked upon to expand to full size.
- christor, on 11/03/2007, -0/+15Why do people keep recommending archive and install or clean installs? Backing up is probably a good idea before the upgrade, but partitioning and clean installs and all the rest: there's no evidence that there is any reason to do those things. Even the "blue screens" caused by APE don't cause data loss on install, and you can always resort to your backup. Used to be that people thought (and maybe for some systems this was true) that doing a clean install would result in a faster system than an upgrade. There's zero evidence for this with respect to Leopard (or Tiger... or Panther...). Gruber ( http://daringfireball.net/2007/10/murphys_law ) has captured all this best:
"The default upgrade is the best choice for most users almost all the time. The reason Apple makes it the default and most obvious way to upgrade is that it’s the most convenient, and most tested upgrade path. Arguments that there is something mysteriously dangerous or deficient about the default upgrade procedure — and that you should do a clean install instead, followed by tedious hours manually migrating software and data and preferences from your old installation — are voodoo."- christor, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4I should add that I think these are all very good tips - even the one on which the above comment was based (back up before installing). I'm only taking issue with the archive and install part of the suggestion - because it wastes the time of so many people and contributes to the average non-tech person's vague impression that OS upgrades are scary and to be performed only by trained professionals. The voluminous book linked in the suggestion is even worse in this regard.
- dvdrtrgn, on 10/30/2007, -0/+6You have a good point. But I start clean after a couple years anyway because there is so much deadwood (files, settings, etc) that have built up.
- tablespork, on 10/30/2007, -0/+6I agree that the average user is best to go with a regular upgrade install (with a backup). For me, I know that I have messed around with my system and have installed so many different things over the years that I really wanted a fresh hard drive with nothing on it but what I actually use. I opted for the backup what I want, WIPE and install. This way I was able to copy over exactly what I wanted, down to the Library level.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2If you use a program like Appzapper, it's going to get rid of pretty much everything you don't want when you get rid of a program. I'd say I probably have a few folders and 10 or so files that aren't being accessed due to uninstalled programs. This is not exactly going to slow things down. I did an upgrade on my 2 year old system and everything is going well. No kernel panics, freezes, and overall it's snappier.
- wonderchemist, on 10/31/2007, -0/+8Being a former and current Windows user as well as OS X users, my years of Windows upgrade training has taught me to format install.
- DaffyDuck, on 11/03/2007, -1/+4You should try to unlearn this. Like disk defragmenting, it's not necessary.
- jwdav, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2It depends upon your setup - if you have a dead standard install and don't use the Unix side or have many plug-ins, by all means use the standard approach. If you've modified.updated or compiled BSD programs and use a lot of plug-ins or mods to the system, save yourself some heartache and do a clean install.
- screwzluse, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1I tried the upgrade feature and it just caused headaches. Took twice as long as a clean install and the system, once started, was actually pretty damn slow. I made sure nothing special was running but it still ran pretty crappy. I didn't try the archive option but I'm definitely going to have to say that a clean install is the best choice.

I was a die-hard Firefox user, but the day I installed Leopard, I gave Safari another try and the article is right - Safari is pretty damn fast in this release and I'm liking it a lot. The absence of the brushed metal look helps too.- Tyr7BE, on 10/30/2007, -3/+6Does it have
1) Find as you type (without brinng up that horrible late-90's styel "FIND" dialogue that blocks out half the page)
2) Decent ad blocking capabilities, a la FF's Adblock with filterset G updater
When those two dealbreakers are dealt with, I'll consider Safari again.- gregfadein, on 10/31/2007, -1/+111) Yes, and the Safari 3 beta has for months.
2) Try pimpmysafari.com.- mrBitch, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1for decent ad blocking ( ala FF style adblock plugin ) - I find " SafariBlock " does everything that FF adblock does.

2. How about supporting the creators of the websites you love be not bypassing their only source of income?- DarkDx, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4People that are blocking ads are not exactly the people that would click on them. You know.
- RicoX9, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1I support the creators of websites who don't direct my browser to *attempt* to download content from slow, overtaxed advertising networks/servers and make pages take 10x as long to load, if ever. Also don't support the yahoos who fill up a page with flash/java based ads.
Like DarkDx said, we're not the ones that are going to give you clicks anyway. I steadfastly refuse to click them, so I don't need to view them.
You can have my AdblockPlus when you pry it from my cold, dead browser.- mrBitch, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1I like Adblock too, that's why I installed " SafariBlock " - it works exactly like the FF Adblock plugin.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1I miss Pithhelmet for blocking ads but I ended up finding a good hosts file to block 95% of the ads. I actually like this better because it doesn't add much overhead and won't intruduce any bugs which could come from a plugin. Safari badly needs a new tab button though.
- ckSubs, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1I need mouse gesture support and very customized tab behavior. Until I get those, I'm sticking with Opera.
- gregfadein, on 10/31/2007, -1/+111) Yes, and the Safari 3 beta has for months.
- dvdrtrgn, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5Speed isn't everything. Yes Safari is very good but it just doesn't have the power of Firefox. I use BOTH because I do dev work. Firebug and WDToolbar are tops.
- Lionhart, on 10/31/2007, -2/+11But it still doesn't have adblock...so I am sticking with Firefox.
- BRODEL, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2Bah, you've got people digging you down so they'll probably digg me down too, but this is THE reason I can't even consider Safari. I've looked around for adding adblocking to safari and everything I have tried sucks horribly compared to adblock plus for firefox. I want to use safari, but having to wait for ads to load from some slow ass server negates the speed increase of safari.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Try installing the hosts file from this site then give it another shot.

- coolbru, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2Huh? Firefox with no ads is still much slower than Safari. Firefox on a Mac is a fantastic developer's browser, but it is dog slow, ugly and cumbersome as a user's browser. SafariStand helps quite a bit with some missing features like remembering open tabs/windows.
BTW there is also a greasemonkey plugin for Safari around. - m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Do you people even *try* anymore? http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19202

"wow, that will really help"
Spaces does a good and simple job of separating my windows that never want to go away. Elgato's EyeTV is one of those that is ever present before my eyes. So now I relegate it to one of the Spaces windows.
Quick Look is exactly that, and it works well and flawlessly.
The new Finder left hand ala iTunes navigation has good points, but may take some getting used to.
"interesting, but doubt I will ever use it"
iChat's background and iCandy effects.
Mail's fancy templates.
Busy Desktop pictures
Oooh once, then ignore screensavers.
"Apple, what have you DONE!!"
Transparent menu with no control over opacity!!??
Making a useless, uncontrollable Dock into less than useless?
No more "This folder only" settings!!!???
I haven't gotten in to using Automator or Time Machine yet. I have been quite let down by this release. I wish they would have graduated from the Middle School Aqua buttons and given us control over the the interface theme. But Apple knows better than the user... right?- Tyr7BE, on 10/31/2007, -5/+3"I have been quite let down by this release. I wish they would have graduated from the Middle School Aqua buttons and given us control over the the interface theme. But Apple knows better than the user... right?"
Way to tell it like it is. This is one of the very reasons I've lost a lot of interest in my iBook. I never liked the Aqua buttons, or the Aqua theme in general. Don't like it? Tough. That's what Apple provides so that's what you'll use. That's why I'm leaning towards ubuntu these days on my desktop. Seems to be just as featured as OS X, does more than everything I need to do, and most importantly, lets me control what it looks like. I'd much rather be surfing gnomelook.org for deadly GTK and compiz themes instead of eating apple's ***** and thanking them for it.
And yes, I know there's some third party thing that hijacks your UI and lets you theme it how you like. Two problems with that: I don't want to go installing some third party hack just to theme my UI, especially if i have to pay for it or crack it, and 80% of the themes for that thing look like my ass since nobody tends to use it. - screwzluse, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2I'd definitely have to agree about the dock. I don't personally mind it so much but those damn little glowing orbs are hard as hell to see on any sort of blue desktop. I find it tough to actually see, at a quick glance, if a program is running. It's just ridiculous that there's no option to change the settings (unless I've missed them, but I doubt it).
- rebotfc, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2Is everyone blind, ive not seen a menu yet that has been hard to read because its slightly transparent.

- BRODEL, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5I tried this a few months ago and it didn't block much of anything. Maybe I'll try it again and see if it has improved. Going by the screenshots, it still doesn't have a preloaded filterset like adblock plus. If I have to manually block every ad, it's useless to me.

Leopard is not a very good at this moment. It doesn't keep your preferences. Time Machine doesn't work half of the time. I am not a Fan Boy. I have been using Macs for about 5 years now. I love them. Leopard sucks.
Vista gave me less problems that Leopard has.- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/31/2007, -1/+51. Leopard kept my preference and those of several upgraded machines just fine.
2. Time Machine works dandy. The only problems I've heard of have been NAS support, which isn't officially supported anyway.
3. If Vista has given you less problems, then you're doing something wrong. - djpants428, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3wow, really? I've had next to no problems with Leopard, on the 3 machines I've used it on. One machine had the sidebar get a little messed up and i had to re add the places folders. On another the quick launch dock folders got messed up and i had to toss a plist file to fix it. Besides those two little issues with preferences, i have had no issues that caused me any more than 10 seconds worth of grief. Leopard as far as I can tell is a very polished product, compared at least to 10.4.0. The Tiger version at launch was much less stable and had a bunch more problems. I don't see 10.5.1 getting released in the next month like they did with 10.4.1.
