- Evi1d33d, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3I think FreeCall only gives you 30-60 free minutes. Notice that a lot of 'free' VOIP sites have identical site layout.
- shortstacks, on 04/15/2008, -1/+12interesting story considering there is the fring voip thingy that also came out today
- killbert24, on 04/15/2008, -18/+4This way you can humiliate people you know who actually PAID for their iPhone by making a call on your CHEAPER iPod Touch right in front of them. Take that, suckas!
- rudy23, on 04/15/2008, -3/+11What do you do once you are outta wifi? You have an ipod touch which looks like it has a tumor sticking out of it.
- nickerbocker, on 04/15/2008, -2/+3On top of that you'll probably look like a complete tool in the process.
- MikeSD34, on 04/15/2008, -2/+11I'd pay more for a use anywhere cell phone with bluetooth and a camera. When you consider the extra $40-$60 for the microphone for the touch, it's really not that much more for the iPhone.
- rudy23, on 04/15/2008, -2/+8how about the monthly bill?
- cdahlkvist, on 04/15/2008, -9/+6How about you get a job?
- rudy23, on 04/15/2008, -3/+8how about I have both a job and an iphone. i was just debating the numbers.
- starbird, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2I agree with MikeSD34, because if you are going to spend $60 more, might as well spend the $40 extra for truly anywhere calling. And, yes, rudy, there is the monthly bill, but I am sure that anyone jailbreaking their iPod touch, reading stories on VoIP, etc, are likely paying SOME cellular carrier a monthly fee....
- rudy23, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1True but you do have to consider that the data plan itself is and additional $20 a month.
- MikeSD34, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5VOIP has a bill too when you're trying to call a regular phone number, and that doesn't include access to a phone anywhere you are, and access to the internet anywhere you are either. That only gets you access to a single telephone line when you're near a wifi base station. I'm not saying it's bad, if that's all you need then by all means save yourself some money.
- Echomote, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2We're discussing a hacked ipod touch, so why can't we compare it to a hacked + unlocked iPhone, the difference between the plain jailbreak and an unlock for the iphone are mouse 2 clicks away, if even that. There's a such thing as pay as you go.
Also, vo-ip works on iPhone too...

- Amadeus2490, on 04/15/2008, -0/+20You can also do this on the DS, in case anybody's interested. There are videos of it on Youtube, which I won't link to due to rickrolling.
- JudgeMonkey, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1I dunno. I found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJMliDSKDGY
Is that one of them? I haven't listened to it all so I don't know if he explains it very well. it's only a rickroll if you post to a rickroll video. Let's not make that the end of ever posting links to videos and just sayin "it's out there."- Amadeus2490, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1I don't know if this helps or hurts anything, but i'm literally too afraid to click the link you posted; my instincts tell me it's Rick Astley.
HOWEVER, there was this one video where the guy suggests that you sign up with a free trial to a VOIP service, and to keep renewing the trial. The cool thing is that you can use the touch screen as a "real" keypad, and if you use it as an Ipod clone, you can really move the dial, and everything. That's gimmicky in a GOOD way, folks.
- Amadeus2490, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1I don't know if this helps or hurts anything, but i'm literally too afraid to click the link you posted; my instincts tell me it's Rick Astley.
- JudgeMonkey, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1I dunno. I found this:
- russ3, on 04/15/2008, -2/+6There is no EDGE network for the touch, so this thing would be about as useful as my VOIP computer, or a plug-in phone.
- russ3, on 04/15/2008, -3/+9Also, the touch is 300 dollars, then you need a 60 dollar addon, and the special iphone headphones(40 dollars) and for 400 dollars, bam! a ***** i phone, than that way too expensive 400 dollar iphone.
- JudgeMonkey, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Yes, but then you aren't paying a monthly fee for phone service, and it clearly states this would just be for rare calls.
- fkr3, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2Rare calls when? When you're in range of wifi somewhere and either don't have your cell phone or don't have network access, but do have your iPod and and a bunch of accessories?
It's impressive but there's much cheaper ways to get yourself a wireless voip phone for your home.

- SkittlesUSA, on 04/15/2008, -2/+6So you need a wifi connection to make calls?

- bullsfan03, on 04/16/2008, -1/+22cups1string
- Ruger11mcrdpi, on 04/15/2008, -13/+14Ok, so this "IPod touch" is $100 cheaper than the iphone, right? But you need to add a $50-$65 mic attachment plus a minimum $16 in minutes from a VOIP service? WOW this is AMAZING. You saved Almost $35!! and you have a phone that is buggy, works only in wifi areas, and you'll STILL need a cell phone, so you can carry two deivices and tack the cost of your monthly cell bill and the initial cost of your cell phone to your "$35 savings" and you end up losing money! This is retarded. I am not a Mac fan, but I really like the iphone a lot, however this is worthless.
- wellyuk, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3No, it's not worthless. It's an option. It's not a replacement for an iphone but if you have an ipod touch, which some people do, it's another way to communicate.
- beingdevious, on 04/15/2008, -1/+5you forgot ATT's monthly service contract, for 2 years. with this alternative.. its not there. nice try.
- MScrip, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1You're right. No service contracts... but it's still not a phone. It's an iPod touch pretending to be a phone. A cell phones has contract because it's a mobile telephone. This is an MP3 player hacked to act "like" a phone.

- Ruger11mcrdpi, on 04/15/2008, -1/+0Really? Are you serious? AT&T charges you? AMAZING. It's a phone, they are the carrier, of course they charge you. My point was if you did this crap to an ipod touch, you'd need two devices and you'd STILL be paying the same monthly fee. (maybe a bit less with a different plan)
That was almost as bad as the punctuation or spelling trolls.
nice try.
- MScrip, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1You're right. No service contracts... but it's still not a phone. It's an iPod touch pretending to be a phone. A cell phones has contract because it's a mobile telephone. This is an MP3 player hacked to act "like" a phone.
- leek, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3you also forgot that the iPhone is not available in every country. Get your head out of your ass.
- wvstephens, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1This is the internet the Iphone is available anywhere if the buyer is willing to pay shipping. But it is an option.
- phike, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1$60*24 months = $1,440 in savings, FYI.
- djogwe24, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2This is not worthless at all. It is still in the development stages so it might not be all that useful now, but that is how all companies started out. Facebook only became useful once a lot of people found out about it and joined. This technology has the same potential. If wifi networks keep expanding to more and more locations, then this service becomes a lot more useful. And as far as international calls, this is a very cheap way to communicate that does not necessarily replace your actual phone, but it can act as a sort of "international calling card" where you pay an initial fee for minutes to freecall or skype, and then use the minutes as you need them. All im saying is this product has the potential to be great if it allows you to turn any open source tech gadget into a phone. SWEEEET!
- brdude, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1This is one of the things i was waiting for so I can go and put all that money down for an iPhone. Now all i have to wait for is 3G and I should be set.

- plusmedic, on 04/15/2008, -0/+7Baller? You're joking, right?
- Simply_J, on 04/15/2008, -1/+9You're forgetting something. If you buy a new iPhone you have to sign at least a two year agreement where you have to pay AT LEAST $60 a month + taxes. Is this hack perfect? No. But it's a good start for a product that wasn't even meant to be a phone to begin with.
- wellyuk, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1I pay $35 a month for my mobile phone bill. And I only have a one year contract.

- m4lomb, on 04/15/2008, -7/+2Apple had it coming... I applied for the iPhone developer program and have not heard back. Likely a scam to get people to buy macs/iPhones. Steve Jobs, go jump in the lake.
- mashw, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3They never got in touch because you suck. High five!
- outofreaches, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5Yeah, that must be it. *rolls eyes*
- leek, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1dude that was a limited application on the developer program. too bad you've been "limited out".
- se1zure, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2sucks for you. It it makes you feel worse, and I hope it does, I got in.
- skater9269, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2Definitely not a scam I applied and was excepted immediately. The tools are great, especially aspen simulator. (I still would not mind Steve Jobs jumping into a lake) *Gets idea for iPhone/iTouch game and goes to use iPhone SDK.
- Wolfspirittt, on 04/15/2008, -0/+4I still think this is pretty dumb. I hate it when I hear "hey free phone calls with VOIP!" The idea is there but you have to realize that unless you are in a major metropolitan area that has free wifi EVERYWHERE then this is pretty much useless. There is a huge difference between being always connected through a cell phone service, and trying to call up using VOIP on a pda or mp3 player made into a pda (ipod touch) using your neighbor's wireless or sitting in a starbucks. BOO.
- leek, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1you're right about the difference, but still, for those who actually have access to wifi networks most of the time (at work and at home is already quite good), that can be a valid option for personal communications.
- nybike, on 04/15/2008, -3/+2Check out this You Tube video of Fring on the iPhone:
http://mailbysnail.tumblr.com/- Zappaman112, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1Why do you need an extra application to call people with if your iPHONE is already a PHONE? The texting makes sense though.

- ctonks, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1i'm hanging out for an ipod touch BT dongle which allows DUN.
then ipod touch + hsdpa mobile = best mobile browsing experience ever.
but i suspect this isn't going to happen for a while due to the fact someone will need to write the kext to do this as the iphone BT sux. - meehawl, on 04/16/2008, -0/+0For the last year I've been enjoying Skype Mobile and MS Portrait (for video VOIP calls) on my Sprint Mogul. Having an always on, unmetered, unlimited 3G data connection helps a lot (or I can use the WiFi if I am in an area with bad 3G coverage). Can't really see doing video VOIP over EDGE.
- mzieg, on 04/16/2008, -2/+0Caveat: I love my iTouch. However, name ONE person you know who owns an iPod Touch but doesn't already have a cell phone. Bor-ring!
- misterparry, on 04/16/2008, -4/+3$299 ipod touch
