- phoenixrip, on 07/15/2008, -1/+18Great Idea, fugly interface from the looks of it., but a great idea none the less.
And yes, file magnet already exists, but it sounds like this will be a little more advanced, and hopefully won't require a seperate OS X.5 app, seein as it support bonjour.

DataCase has you covered, no matter what kind of computer you use."
"# A computer (Mac, Windows, Linux, Other) with a web browser
# Mac OS 10.3+ for AFP integration"
Seemingly it will have one interface you can use wherever, but a more convenient interface for Macs. (And I believe it will work for others, you just don't have support right out of the box. Bonjour isn't supported in Windows by default, so you need another control app. - ngmcs8203, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1*****, well maybe my gripe was directed more at File Magnet for having it's Mac ONLY line near the bottom of the description on the Apps page. Way to waste $5 ngmcs8203!
Anyways, I should have seen that this was a tuaw article. They made it sound like it was Mac only, because they are a Mac Website. This will definitely be handy then if it is cheap(by not having us pay a monthly subscription fee) and has large file transfer capabilities.
I like the idea of syncing to an offsite server like Dropbox does, but this doesn't do what my iPod did (by acting as a storage device)

- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1Great idea, except I didn't write it. If I had written it I would have personally added Windows support as well (which neither of them seem to offer as far as I can tell)
- benliong, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Apparently having a network drive just "pop up" in windows file explorer is a lot harder with windows not having something like bonjour to auto-discover the service. I'd say that using the browser is a good touch though, since the browser's become the most platform agnostic application in the world.

Of course, to make it work you'd actually have to write a WIndows bonjour module... probably not that hard, but extra work anyway. - serif69, on 07/15/2008, -2/+4That's exactly what I just said, except sarcastically.

http://lifehacker.com/396420/diskaid-transfers-fil ... - AndreiOttawa, on 07/15/2008, -3/+24You can now buy 8GB USB drive for under $30. It's small, durable, fits nicely on a key chain.Works with any OS and the best part is that it does not come with a 3-year slave contract.
- aladrin, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3My issue with that solution is that it's just one more thing to carry around. I can carry 1 device before I get to the point that I start getting frustrated with charging, belt-space, etc. My current phone does phone and camera stuff. I'd like it to do PDA stuff, but to get one that has all the features I'd need (to combine 3 devices) is impossible.
If my phone also acted as a decent USB drive (meaning no reboots, no funny cables, etc), I'd be very happy about it.
Unfortunately, this program only works well with Mac. Using a browser to copy files off of the device is too much. No mention if it works with Linux, either.
I think that sums up the complaint nicely. 'Just carry another device' is not an answer.- newstart, on 07/15/2008, -4/+2
You are already carrying three devices without knowing it: A Phone, An iPod and a Revolutionary Internet Device - CCmachined, on 07/15/2008, -2/+2you dont have a chain or ring for your keys? err, does not compute.
and actually, "just use another device" IS the answer. any other phone with a decent amount of memory on it allows you to store files on it just like a USB drive... and wait for it... SWAP files via Bluetooth! Revolutionary?! iPhone... oh look its a iPod with a new screen and AT&T. thats just awesome...? - AndreiOttawa, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1I have a USB drive for work. It's encrypted and I use it to store files if I work from home or meet with clients. It is small and durable. And the best part-it's super cheap. If I lose it, it's no big deal: drive is cheap and the data is encrypted. And I always have a backup.
I don't believe in putting all my eggs in one basket. Plus, what are the chances of somebody trying to steal a used USB drive vs. an iPhone? And don't you need to carry a cable to hook up your iPhone to a computer?
- newstart, on 07/15/2008, -4/+2
- shil01, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2a USB drive isn't a wireless solution like this app is offering. This is very convenient.

- lvlln, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1I could do this on my iPod Touch about 9 months ago. In fact, for a while, it was the only way to use it and the iPhone as a storage device. Convenient in some ways, but much slower than the traditional USB method.
- trollick, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3The amount of technological innovation that made this possible is mind boggling.
I mean if yesterday someone told me that it would be possible to copy a file to a flash device, I would laugh in his stupid face.
The Singularity is near! - zbeast, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2hay this is a good idea..
it's a real shame it's not a built in feature of the phone.

- CCmachined, on 07/15/2008, -4/+2and wait... what other phone that plays MP3s couldnt do this already, and even swap files via Bluetooth? Buried for iHypeDevice stupidity.
even worse, how many iPhone users run Macs? 10%? total BS. - Ellipsys, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3This is nice and all, but what I'd really like is if someone would write an application that allows the iPhone to show up as a regular mass storage device in any OS, regardless of the installed drivers or protocols on the machine (beyond mass storage support, that is). It would be even better if the mass storage volume was read like "normal" memory for media files, so one could copy and paste their media and have it show up. This would also help the iPhone to integrate with all other media players that support mass storage devices, regardless of operating system. Having to ensure the computer you're connecting to has bonjour support or, a SSH application, or any other protocol just to give the "illusion" of mass storage is little better than the ass-backward current practice of requiring iTunes for just about everything
- CCmachined, on 07/15/2008, -6/+1plus, how long til a firmware update stops this working, and the wait-til-its-cracked cycle starts all over again. iTunes DRM anybody?
- s0u1man, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4If you had read the article, you would know that this is an application that is going to be released via Apple's officially-sanctioned store. So, to answer your question, a long, long time.
- CCmachined, on 07/15/2008, -4/+1oh, so a different business model. "Charge extra for standard features found on most similiar phones, but poorly implemented?" (app-based instead of nice, easy, universal USB storage)

Worthless, in my opinion. - johncap, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I'm surprised this feature isn't built in.
- DelMonte, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Maybe it's not the real reason, but aside from making it easier to jailbreak/unlock the iPhone, having disk access on the iPhone/iPod Touch could be "dangerous".
With disk access, malware could install itself on the iPod system folder and do some nasty things. Writing on the system partition from the outside wouldn't require any authorization. Given the mainstream popularity of the iPhone/iPod, it would be easy/profitable for malware authors to post links everywhere for "free iPhone wallpapers" that link to a trojan that installs malware on the iPhone.
The difference with the classic iPods is that the iPhone has a "real" OS that exists within it's own filesystem. Older iPods where using a custom "monolithic" undocumented OS that was residing in the firmware, completely shielded from the filesystem on the HDD/Flashdrive. You couldn't really insert any malicious code into the OS. After years of people hacking the classic iPods, I've never seen any successful attempt at running any new program from inside the stock OS. (Sure you could install iPod linux, but it completely replaces the stock OS while running.) - sputza, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1A windows version would be nice.
