Two Part Timers Beat Engadget and Gizmodo's Keynote Coverage
normalkid.com — This year, MacRumors ’ coverage of the Macworld San Francisco 2008 keynote address knocked it out of the park. Reviews were universally positive, and it makes me really proud of what we’ve accomplished.

- wonderchemist, on 01/23/2008, -2/+173To be fair the Gizmodo reporter was too busy trying to turn off Steve's presentation projector.
- bigandy, on 01/23/2008, -21/+13To continue to be fair to Gizmodo, they are childish idiots who don't deserve access to anywhere that uses electricity.
- Bridea, on 01/23/2008, -14/+8swiiing and a miss.

- Jyushin, on 01/23/2008, -2/+59I had more than one tab loaded up with the various blogs/sites....I stuck with MacRumors after about 3 minutes - not having to refresh was very nice. Well done kids!
- cave, on 01/23/2008, -2/+20Yup, same deal for me, it's really sad how quickly the vast majority of businesses lose touch of what the customers want, in favor of silly short term gains like pageview stats.
- IHumpCars, on 01/23/2008, -23/+3Actually, the auto-refresh sucked -- I kept having it pop me back up to the top of the page. Bury FTL.
- diggzoid, on 01/23/2008, -0/+4They had auto refresh last year too but this year used a better method. Well done, by far the best coverage!
- Refrag, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1I loaded up MacRumors and Engadget on my iPhone. Macrumors was far superior both because of their iPhone optimized format (for those clients) and because of their AJAX refreshes of content. I soon closed the Engadget page and let MacRumors tell the whole story. They even had photos that went along with their updates.
- spatd, on 01/23/2008, -1/+14I also loved the auto refresh! Great job guys!
- node3, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1And their iPhone feed was perfect.
- atdakore, on 01/23/2008, -1/+9informative and concise too.
- BLAM8, on 01/23/2008, -3/+13Also, Arnold Kim is a doctor. And a really nice guy. They were definitely 5 minutes ahead of Engadget, but Gizmodo was neck and neck. Dugg!
- norbiu, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6I didn't watch the Engadget keynote. Did they still do ascending updates like last year? That was pretty stupid.
- tvon, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3No, this year it made sense
- norbiu, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6I didn't watch the Engadget keynote. Did they still do ascending updates like last year? That was pretty stupid.
- typicalusername, on 01/23/2008, -17/+9OMG! They ***** won the race to get me information that validated my whole ***** existance that day! They are hard-*****-core!
- AntBing, on 01/23/2008, -1/+8I'm worried you may never validate your existance, mainly because it's spelled existence, but partially because you're a troll.
- MacParrot, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1I highly doubt validating his existence is all that important seeing how he's a typical user and all.

- joeycerone, on 01/23/2008, -3/+29Yes I started with gizmodo, engadget and macrumors up, and 5 minutes in the only one I had open was macrumors. Nice stuff!
- MacParrot, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Our guys were unable to get into the keynote this year and macrumors made it completely unnecessary. Kudos
- bigandy, on 01/23/2008, -2/+6the best, as with every year!
- digitallysick, on 01/23/2008, -11/+3engadget ftw
- phoochka, on 01/23/2008, -11/+3Wow digg reaches new lows :/
- OpaqueMurdock, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2If digg is supposed to be all about what you personally are interested in... then yes. :/
- typo900, on 01/23/2008, -5/+2Your mum reached new lows....with me
- MacParrot, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Wow, (notice I put in the comma you missed) phoochka reaches new highs, but it was with a completely stupid comment. Sorry, you lose.
- typo900, on 01/23/2008, -8/+2when i was a boy, i use to run around for hours throwing strawberries at funny looking people
- neiltc13, on 01/23/2008, -15/+2MacRumors spam is on Digg again!
- leerayIG88, on 01/23/2008, -15/+4hah! Part timers at Engadget and Gizmodo's? I work Full-Time at Microsoft!
I WIN! $$$!!@!@!- norbiu, on 01/23/2008, -1/+11On the contrary, you lose.
- lfernandez91, on 01/23/2008, -0/+4Did you even bother reading the title?
- leerayIG88, on 01/23/2008, -5/+1Don't Bury me, Gahh!!
- toasterweasel, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6So there's the real reason Vista was delayed so long.
- 0260, on 01/23/2008, -8/+3people actually do this?
- faramarzhashemi, on 01/23/2008, -6/+2It was great and refreshing. the way you went about it was sensible!
You have my complete and undivided support, until you ***** it up. But i hope that never happens. - indyhouse, on 01/23/2008, -11/+2MacRumor's coverage was terrible. It just mostly photos and they sent a text update every 5 minutes or so. Their live IRC chat consisted of "A new photo has been posted... a new photo has been posted... a new photo has been posted..." No information. It sucked. Ars Technica's IRC channel updated 5-10 times per minute with a constant flow of information. By far the best.
- Pegasus_Strain, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2This is the second year in a row I have used MacRumors irc coverage and I love it!
- charlie55, on 01/23/2008, -1/+4sometimes i get bored of stories about media coverage, instead the news.
- tupperbacharach, on 01/23/2008, -6/+5Wow. This story is almost as exciting as the "Macbook Air unboxing."
Steve Jobs would get a lot more respect from the non-fanboy, normal people, if at one of his keynotes, he would do something like this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=9GZbfD0R6Vc - cgomez, on 01/23/2008, -1/+13Please don't mention Gizmodo in the same sentence as Engadget.
- inajeep, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Except in the above example of what not to do.
- aladrin, on 01/23/2008, -2/+7While MacRumors' site was technically superior (that no-reload was a life-saver), Engadget's coverage of the keynote was a lot more thorough. During the important bits, Engadget had more accurate and complete information -by far-. I watched both because I wasn't sure whose would be better.
- shieldss, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3During the important bits, Engadget's server was down.
- deanlowe, on 01/23/2008, -0/+5Engadget needs a layout change if they want to do more Live Blogging. The 2 column side bar has got to go.
- mandarin, on 01/23/2008, -5/+2And the purpose of knowing the coverage which is public at 5 minutes earlier is......?
- Sidnicious, on 01/23/2008, -0/+0"and I wasn’t first in the Superpass line"
That was us, bitches!
In all seriousness, you guys had some great coverage — and definitely deserve media passes, despite IDG's insane requirements.- MacParrot, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1I think most of the problems was that CES and Macworld weren't run at the same time this year (this is a good thing IMO) so there were more press passes requested than usual. Add in that interest in what Apple is doing is higher as well and there you have it. We got 5 of our people in last year and exactly zero this year. Either that or we pissed off IDG or Apple (or both) at some point.
- dude666, on 01/23/2008, -1/+0SlashGear.com Live Cast stays up and running without a problem. They are also using Ajax live casting system
- Konrad9, on 01/23/2008, -2/+3I was watching it live until someone made them shut off the video feed.
OH NOES, CUSTOMERS ARE WATCHING THE SUPER SECRET KEYNOTE SPEECH.
Seriously Apple. You are a great company and I really like most of your products, but stop being retarded ***** with ***** for brains (pardon my language) and give us a live stream of your keynote.- inajeep, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3I was with you up until the turret's outburst.
- Konrad9, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1Tourette's syndrome?
Yeah.
It comes out when someone needs to get yelled at for doing really stupid stuff.
- Konrad9, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1Tourette's syndrome?
- inajeep, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3I was with you up until the turret's outburst.
- jabberwolf, on 01/23/2008, -2/+1Macworld - whatta waste of time !
- MacParrot, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2Macworld was actually great this year. Between some new gear from Apple (whatever you think of it), new verwsion of Microsoft Office for the Mac, Devo at the Macblast party, and just the general insanity that comes with nearly every trade show it was a good time.
Your comment? Well, not so much.

- thinkart, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1also had several tabs open on my desktop...making sure i didnt miss anything (insert dork joke here). i also opened mac rumors feed on my iphone. i have to say their iphone feed was TOP NOTCH. i preferred it's simplicity over all.
- bulius, on 01/23/2008, -0/+0Agreed. There's nothing nerdier than watching the mac rumors feed specifically for the iphone to hear about the iphone update.
...then immediately twittering it from your iphone.
- bulius, on 01/23/2008, -0/+0Agreed. There's nothing nerdier than watching the mac rumors feed specifically for the iphone to hear about the iphone update.
- diggzoid, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Did anyone see the little boy on his webcam at cunning.tv? Hysterical! They got wiped out after 2000 people logged on.
- TheRealM3D, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1My entire office watched on MacRumors and it totally blew away all the other coverage on the web. I started getting messages from friends as other services dropped and I immediately pointed them to MacRumors for the duration of the event. Thanks a lot guys! We really appreciate your efforts.
- funsutton, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2I watched the presentation via Macrumors on my iphone. It was extremely painless!
- mediateacher, on 01/23/2008, -1/+0I have watched the Macrumors site in the past and wanted to view it for this Macworld but could not get a connection to them; I watched both Engadget and Gizmodo instead and, yes, refreshing was a pain but at least I could connect. Anyone else get shut out?
- ryanrit, on 01/24/2008, -1/+0I have to tell you, we found the guys at thelife.com were ahead of everyone else. They probably had an advantage in being new, so less stress on their server, but we relied on them for our live coverage throughout the day. They were thorough, and beating Macrumors speed-wise. What live coverage you ask? Why www.TheDigitalLifestyle.tv I reply. The little all-Apple tech channel that could.
- bbeep, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1As I was reading the updates live, it just reminded me how archaic the whole system is. Considering the advertising and publicity Macworld generates, it's incredible that Apple wouldn't go to any lengths, or costs, to make a live feed available right from their website. I mean THANKS to MacRumors, but it's just pitiful and mindboggling that we have to get updates from a rag-tag bunch of bloggers rather than straight from an Apple provided feed.
- cosulliv755, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1These guys did an outstanding job of covering the event, I really enjoyed it, and they deserve this praise. Well Dug.
