- digitalpencil, on 11/26/2008, -2/+14it's more lying about how good O2's 3G network is but yes.
@kronzdigg: this has nothing to do with 'mommy government' the ASA has a responsibility to vet adverts making outlandish claims and misleading consumers. it's either that or we have to start making [citation needed] stickers and attach them to every billboard just flat-making ***** up. - mickstephenson, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4@digitalpencil - have you seen the Lloyds TSB billboards? the most secure UK bank my arse! Its a wonder ASA let that one get by.
- Phalanxia, on 11/26/2008, -1/+22If you don't have rules like that, you get advertisements like "Smoking helps clear the throat".
- kronzdigg, on 11/27/2008, -6/+2 I've had 2 iphones over the last two years and sure it is not as fast as presented in the commercial but it is the best piece of mobile technology I have ever had, no question. I realize you said "about that fast" but I believe that is the whole argument right there- it was meant as a realtime demo...I didn't see anything like this is a time-lapsed demo.
- dullnation, on 11/26/2008, -0/+9*****, mine isn't even that fast over 24Mb broadband with a wifi router. In this case, the slowness is down to the capabilities of the phone.
(I love it but come on, it simply isn't as fast as on the advert.)
Oh and I saw an iPhone ad just an hour ago, they have a little message at the end near the bottom explaining that the video is edited and speeds may vary...- subliminalurge, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4That's because with most web pages, which are very heavy on javascript these days, the bandwidth isn't a factor. It's the processor that's slowing down the rendering of the page.
If I tether a laptop over Edge, I can surf quite comfortably. The same sites over 10Mb WiFi on my iPhone (and, to be fair, any other phone I've used) load painfully slow.
Which is a big part of the reason I'm in no hurry to upgrade to the 3G model. Mobile browsing is being slowed down by the CPU much more than it is by low bandwidth.

Now with 3 BLADES and an ALOE VERA strip to keep your face cool!"- MrFisty, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1But don't Gillette make that Fusion razor with the vibrating function? Apple especially get a free ride with a lot of their ads and defective products not just because the advertising standards bod there has no testicles but because of the fanboy mania that surrounds apple. Anyone who criticizes apple gets attacked and called names. Very childish.
Jobs has often said that he hates the fanboys as a bit of criticism would make apple a better company but no matter how much they screw up, the fanboys love it and make their excuses for them.- derektherock42, on 11/26/2008, -9/+3What frustrates me about people like you is that you act like everybody loves Apple, but look at all the people who dugg up your comment about it. It used to be 'hip' to like Apple; now it's 'hip' to point out Apple's problems. As if the other phone companies never make any mistakes.
- alanr19, on 11/26/2008, -4/+6You are assuming it was a mistake. Unfortunately for Steve Jobs his reality distortion field doesn't encompass Britain. They were caught out.
Have you ever noticed that they never advertise lower specs than the product has? It was no mistake.
I'm not pointing out Apple's faults to be "hip", nor am I part of some edgy backlash against the fanboys. I'm just personally sick of Apple getting a free ride every time they ***** up or lie. When MS ***** up PC users shout about it, when a linux vendor ***** up, you just KNOW someone's gonna get lynched. Not so with Apple.
I also never assume that everyone here is an Apple fanboy, but judging by how many Apple stories make the front page there are a lot of them here. It wasn't so long ago that fanboys here were nearly jerking off at the thought of Apple's new notebook manufacturing process ffs. Every new Apple ad get front page billing and analysed endlessly like its a Stanley Kubrick movie. Its that kind of mindless need to belong to a group that fanboys exhibit that I find revolting. - aragami, on 11/26/2008, -2/+4the other phone companies don't piss in your pocket and tell you its raining.

- gingerboy, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4yeah but at the end of the day the ASA is there to do a job, and apple most definitely lied their ass of here, I doubt the iPhone could even run the apps that quick never mind download the data to display!
They cant get everyone, but if they take pot shots at a few its makes others think, and surely making advertisers think about how much they can get away with is a good thing?
Plus apple, suck it! my HTC is quicker :)
/s - Tarsmus, on 11/27/2008, -1/+1I completely misstated my point. It was more of a "If one, then all" kind of things. - rlindsley, on 11/26/2008, -14/+44That ad had two things wrong with it:
1) It showed 3G as 'fast'
2) The phone didn't crash at all

- cthellis, on 11/26/2008, -14/+3A) It's not slow.
B) It was unstable when you chocked the device with apps, and before Firmware 2.1 (after which it's been immensely solid).
C) Safari crashes more often because that's better than sitting there spinning your wheels for a while. All mobile browsers have memory limitations, and different interactions with websites not designed toward mobile devices.
D) The occasional 3rd party program crashes because... well... not all 3rd party programs are created equal. (It's still been about 90% better on THEIR part since Firmware 2.1, as well.)- malschla, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4Oh, so it's the 3rd party apps' fault? Wow, I think I have heard this before.

It's better for an app to drop back to the menu with no warning or explanation than it is to pop up a little box saying "this website seems to have more javascript than digg times 5, want to stop loading it before I crash?"

- kronzdigg, on 11/26/2008, -1/+4Have you ever ate a hamburger that looks like the one on TV? No.
- Keithamus, on 11/26/2008, -1/+14In the UK if your hamburger doesn't look like the one in the picture (or advert) you can ask them to remake it, and they are legally obliged to.
- derektherock42, on 11/26/2008, -0/+2ABSOLUTELY.
- Rockkybox, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4One day, my dream will be realized (on a side note, you see how the milk on cereal packets + adverts looks so brilliant? well its actually PVA glue)
- DarthDiabetes, on 11/26/2008, -1/+4If they ran the ads showing someone doing these tasks in real time, they'd only have enough air time in 30 seconds to show one feature.
- xutopia, on 11/26/2008, -3/+6I'm happy about that ruling. That advertisement is only hurting Apple anyways.
- captainquack, on 11/26/2008, -5/+1you mean it's not that fast?!?
- pattherat, on 11/26/2008, -1/+17I love my iPhone, but the 3G commercials here in Canada exaggerate as well. The speed on the commercial is even faster than my wifi connections on the phone...
- jsauter, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4In the ones have seen there is a little disclaimer at the bottom of the screen that says something a long the lines of "this ad has been edited for time compression" or something along those lines.
- Airmaxx23, on 11/26/2008, -9/+3This is ridiculous....look at how exaggerated food ads are. The Whopper in a BK ad looks nothing like the thin, crap burger you find when you open the wrapper.
- cmyk, on 11/26/2008, -31/+39Let's conduct a poll:
Who here thought 3G download speeds were as instantaneous as seen in the :30 Apple spot, digg me down.
Who understands real world technology and the confines of representing "speed" in a :30 tv advertisement, digg me up.
I'll be over here, rolling my eyes at the UKs ASA.- Korgmeister, on 11/26/2008, -0/+30The ad isn't targeting techno-geeks like us who understand this stuff.
It's trying to bamboozle regular idiots who aren't familiar with Apple's penchant for ridiculous exaggeration.- jparkinson, on 11/26/2008, -2/+4Why should a capitalist society pander to the idiots? In my opinion, if you're too stupid to fully research a product before signing a 2 (3?) year contract then you deserve any disappointment you receive.
- TheAuditor, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2Because the 'idiots' (meaning those with a limited understanding of technology) you refer to represent 95% of the population of the entire world. Why should a capitalist society pander to the small fraction that argue otherwise?
- Virgule, on 11/26/2008, -1/+12What if I thought the iPhone 3G speed were as quick as advertised by Apple but I also understand time constrain?
This poll is flawed. - derektherock42, on 11/26/2008, -8/+1You're one of the few smart people in this comments page
- derektherock42, on 11/27/2008, -1/+0S***, I shouldn't have said that...
- Funpolice2050, on 11/26/2008, -1/+12Did you even read the article or see the commercial? They repeat "It's really fast" multiple times. This isn't the limitation of a 30 second commercial it is misrepresentation. If they left out the "It's really fast" comments then you may have an argument.
- jparkinson, on 11/26/2008, -5/+3"its really fast" is a relative statement... compared to dial up it is really fast. they didn't say that it is the fastest connection you could possibly have.
digg me down if you wish, im just playing devil's advocate - Funpolice2050, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5You are missing the point. They say "it's really fast" and then show footage of the phone loading web pages and processing applications "really fast". The argument is that the combination of the phrase "It's really fast" and supposedly actual footage of the phone being really fast is what got the ad pulled.
- jparkinson, on 11/26/2008, -5/+3"its really fast" is a relative statement... compared to dial up it is really fast. they didn't say that it is the fastest connection you could possibly have.

ALL COMMERCIALS ARE LITERAL! ALL CONSUMERS ARE IDIOTS! EVEN A 5% DEVIATION MUST BE BAAAAANNED! - DeFex, on 11/26/2008, -1/+20Duh apple, you cant blatantly lie in your commercials in england like everyone does in north America.
- mentalacuity, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8Though I agree consumers should do their own research, for me the larger point here is that as Apple grows they will start coming under much of the same scrutiny that has afflicted other giants like Microsoft and IBM. It is how they will respond to this increased attention that will define them in the future.
- spoonchucks, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1They don't have to respond to it as long as the fan boys are at their front lines.
- spoonchucks, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1They don't have to respond to it as long as the fan boys are at their front lines.
- CussinSailor35, on 11/26/2008, -2/+12They should ban it. It's flat-out false advertising.
- anbudom, on 11/26/2008, -5/+5They should also consider banning most charity advertisements, like 'give us money to help end world hunger', surely these are also misleading.
- mickstephenson, on 11/26/2008, -2/+5key word: help
- danjwray, on 11/27/2008, -1/+1'helping' to end it suggests that it is going to end at some point.
- barfooz, on 11/26/2008, -2/+9I think Apple is the new Hillary Clinton on Digg. The Apple haters seem to be growing exponentially.
- specialK16, on 11/26/2008, -2/+5And that is actually good, believe me.
- Caiman, on 11/26/2008, -0/+9Blame the mactard fanboys for that one.
- Rockkybox, on 11/26/2008, -1/+6Well yeah but to be honest apple deserves a little ***** slinging, I don't know about anyone else, but I would be indifferent to them if they hadn't started some stupid slagging match with Windows (Microsoft, to their credit, hasn't stooped to their level), its like a scrawny little nerd starting a fight with a rugby player, you want them to get beaten up just to set the balance right in the world; oh yeah and a large proportion of their fanbase are smug *****
- mickstephenson, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5That couldn't possibly be Apples fault, could it? it's totally a conspiracy!
They started it off with having incredibly annoying "I'm a mac, I'm a PC" and it snowballed from their.
Guess what? people don't like preening self righteous indie ***** telling them they are lame because they use the wrong operating system.
- inlovingmemory, on 11/26/2008, -2/+15Goes to show that Apple can't pull the wool over the eyes of the British consumer.
- Psara, on 11/26/2008, -0/+0Implications aren't the same as inferences :)
- Rahzo, on 11/26/2008, -3/+2After seeing the commercials I felt like my iPhone was just slow.
- BebopBlues, on 11/26/2008, -4/+5I bought a Mac expecting to get Justin Long, all I got was a stupid computer. BAN ALL APPLE ADS!
- AndrewMoyer, on 11/26/2008, -2/+2ARTICLE:
The U.K.'s advertising regulator banned a video advertisement for Apple's 3G iPhone, saying Wednesday that the ad exaggerates the phone's speed and is misleading.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received 17 complaints about the advertisement, which shows a person whizzing through tasks such as opening a news page in a browser, using Google Maps and downloading a file.
All of the tasks "had waiting times of only a fraction of a second," the ASA said in a statement. A voice over says no less than five times that the 3G iPhone is "really fast."
In response, Apple told the ASA that the claim is a comparison between the 3G and 2G iPhone models, and that users would understand that performance could vary. The ad did include a text disclaimer that read "Network performance will vary by location."
However, the ASA found that the snappy visuals combined with the repetition of "really fast" would "lead viewers to conclude that the device actually operated at or near to the speeds shown in the ad."
Also, not all mobile phone users may be aware of the differences between 2G and 3G technology, ASA said.
Apple did not have an immediate comment on the ruling. - scot333, on 11/26/2008, -8/+2LOL. Yeah, splatter "THERE IS PROBABLY NO GOD" ads everywhere, but ban an apple ad. Jesus, you'd think the ***** brits would have better things to do, like eating fish n chips.
- serif69, on 11/26/2008, -0/+2People on digg think those ads are misleading, too, since they say "probably".
- Rockkybox, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5Well we're not down the range wasting bullets, dreaming for the day we'll be able to shoot someone for real; so we've got to do something with our time.
- jferrari, on 11/26/2008, -8/+2The UK media especially the BBC (just read the tech news section) has been extremely biased against Apple recently, there are much more blatantly false ads on our TV. For example BT ads claim you can get TV down our phone lines, which nearly anyone who has broadband in this country knows is a lie. Although our country claims our media is free it is controlled by only a couple of organisations, who just happen to have other interests in the music, telecoms & media industry.
- toxicpiano, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3What are you talking about?
tvcatchup looks like tv down a phoneline to me. Your just another conspiracy believing idiot, obviously. - HolyChimp, on 11/26/2008, -0/+2The BT ads claim you can get TV over your internet connection. It also has "subject to minimum line speed" at the bottom, since you need at least 2mb in order to get the BT Vision, which the majority of people can get in the UK.
- waydee, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3The BBC devoted an entire article and multiple pluggings on radio, tv etc. for the release of the iPhone 3G.
What other company gets exposure like that when releasing a gadget?
- toxicpiano, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3What are you talking about?
- splinter09, on 11/26/2008, -6/+1Coming from the UK nothing surprises me. They are so politically correct over. to much talk no enough action, where really is needed.
- hawarkarem, on 11/26/2008, -1/+4I'm from the UK and we are far from politically correct these days. That stereotype is from the 40's...oh and you accidentally the grammar.
- jparkinson, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4when they do talk, i'm sure they use 'to' and 'too' correctly.
- Headinawheel, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1@splinter09: You -really- don't know much about UK do you?
- AndrewMoyer, on 11/26/2008, -1/+4I mean, this can't come as any surprise.
Anybody who's tried Vista can tell you Apple's advertising is full of spin and deception. Why should they be any more forthright about their other products?
I guess that's marketing for you. - DamnMan, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5Sure all advertisers embellish a little bit, but the ad vs the real product is off by a factor of at least 10. Even with optimal conditions, 100 yards away with a direct line of sight in the middle of the towers sector, 2Mbps is about the max I've ever seen. And that was a closed 3G network all to myself on a service account.
Even my computer with a >8Mbit connection would have a hell of a time keeping up with the ad, its clearly *****. - jiaoziren, on 11/26/2008, -1/+2spot on! mate.
- supersteve, on 11/26/2008, -5/+5I for one have never had a better internet experience on a phone or PDA, than I have had with my iPhone 3G.
The commercial is misleading but come on when did we as a society start to believe TV ads?
Try a iPhone out for yourself. If it's to slow for you get a phone that is faster.... good luck finding one. - jtechs, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1They should have said,
The new iPhone, Seems much faster then the old one, Web pages can appear to load faster then ever before, feel the applications install almost in an instant, apply directly to the underarm for softer & smoother feeling skin.... winner of the London iPhone Association's best iPhone Phone Award 08/09 - supersteve, on 11/26/2008, -7/+2Vista/XP ads never show it crashing all the time. and people who hate their computers because they use Vista/XP
- Tichondrius74, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1Either you have never used either of them or you do unspeakable terrible things to your computer to get it to do that.
- beerbarron, on 11/26/2008, -6/+4So when I see asda adverts, advertising Christmas items depicting a scene of people smiling and having a good time, asda will give me this? Seriously people they have an allotted time to advertise, if they showed the iPhone downloading an app, it would take up all the add. All they need to do is have a status at the bottom of the screen saying, speeds may vary depending on connection, it's how they sell cars!
