- jsreid, on 01/13/2008, -17/+11I don't see why you would want to use an iPhone for a video chat when you cant have the screen and camera facing you at the same time.
- chrislee149, on 01/13/2008, -5/+8Why would you need the screen?
- ruddy, on 01/13/2008, -1/+5
- Giga, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1You could, I dunno, look at the computer screen which is in fact the screen showing the other person...
- ruddy, on 01/13/2008, -1/+5
- Yaanu, on 01/13/2008, -2/+2Just use a mirror or something.
- purethoughtfilm, on 01/13/2008, -0/+10If you read the article, you would see that you use the phone as the cam and stream it over to a mac. It's paired with another Mac running those apps. Say you have an iMac. The iPhone is the cam while you're running iChat on the iMac.
- fli7e, on 01/13/2008, -2/+1So you mean you use it instead of the iMac's built-in iSight camera?
- ajchavar, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4or if you have an older mac or a mac mini, not everyone has the newest computer. plus you can stream this from the wifi so i could give friends a tour of my new apt without carrying my computer around.
- fli7e, on 01/13/2008, -2/+1So you mean you use it instead of the iMac's built-in iSight camera?
- rento, on 01/13/2008, -3/+1The guy is right is too expensive to be used as a web camera anyway. The iphone is there only to be multitouched in front to girls.
- chrislee149, on 01/13/2008, -5/+8Why would you need the screen?
- beerbarron, on 01/13/2008, -2/+20Thats pretty awesome, I hate having my webcam stuck in one position...
- searcade, on 01/13/2008, -2/+7i wish i had an iphone
- rojano17, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1That's why i bought the 360 webcam, it has great picture and it looks very mac-like
- jjustice, on 01/13/2008, -1/+5nice, always wanted to do this with my treo! videoblogging meets webcam, perhaps?
- iHatemacintosh, on 01/13/2008, -2/+0Its a great idea but the question is... how good is the resolution ?
- Myonosken, on 01/13/2008, -10/+1Why? The camera's not exactly brilliant.
- DaffyDuck, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1There is a video demo. As someone who has spent a lot of time using webcams, I was surprised that the quality appeared to be quite good.
- TomFrost, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Because I have a G4 Powerbook with no built-in camera, and no cash to upgrade it. This is huge, for me!
- Dokument, on 01/13/2008, -1/+40so next time you (speaking of females) are in the bathroom/shower/changing room and see an iphone lying around....... yeah....
- RedHairedMan, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2[pig]Yep, for god's sake girls, give us a bit of a show and be sexy about it![/pig]
- URnotheonly1, on 01/13/2008, -10/+1lame
- bpacana, on 01/13/2008, -1/+22it would be even more remarkable if you put the camera on the front and stream the video to another iphone for video chat.
- Lorenz123, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Like the function that almost all 3G phones have ?
- skyshock1, on 01/13/2008, -1/+15And the amateur porn industry grows....
- Slimtoad, on 01/13/2008, -1/+14Yes, finally, a 24 hour viewable video of my pocket!
- aduzik, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Nah, an hour, tops. Running the camera app drains the battery really fast. When the battery meter is inaccurate, that's what I do to run down the battery and recalibrate it.
- mal1964, on 01/13/2008, -3/+2iCyber
- codyman, on 01/13/2008, -2/+7SpiPhone
- iHatemacintosh, on 01/13/2008, -7/+0Wow. Now that is pretty awesome. Good job apple
- Tddupre, on 01/13/2008, -0/+8Apple had nothing to do with this
- starlord1, on 01/13/2008, -2/+7That is ridiculously cool. Whilst only being vaguely useful just makes it more of an engineering achievement. What amazes me if this is the power of the development community on hacked iPhones, as long as the API doesn't salt the game, can you imagine the cool apps you'll produce when Apple get their ***** together and launch an API.
- Tddupre, on 01/13/2008, -2/+2yea but then you will have to pay like 5.99 for 1 app and right now they are free
- DaffyDuck, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2I'm willing to pay $6 if it's worth it.
- Tddupre, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1i mean if they apps that are doing the exact same thing they are doing now
- Philbert, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1"if it's worth it" - key phrase.
- DaffyDuck, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2I'm willing to pay $6 if it's worth it.
- Tddupre, on 01/13/2008, -2/+2yea but then you will have to pay like 5.99 for 1 app and right now they are free
- bincoder, on 01/13/2008, -18/+5A camcorder will stream too, and it doesn't cost $600.
- bob12321, on 01/13/2008, -0/+8The iPhone dosen't cost $600 either.
- node3, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Wirelessly?
Besides, it's not like someone is going to think, "I need a way to get video onto my computer. I know, an iPhone would be *perfect* for that!". This app is for people who already *have* an iPhone and would like to stream video, via WiFi, which *is* pretty cool.
FYI, the iPhone is only $399.- duser4, on 01/13/2008, -4/+0only $400!!!! No WAI!!! I'm gonna go buy one right now!
- starkruzr, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3Please show me the camcorder you use that can make phone calls, send text messages, browse the web, run UNIX software and play games. I can't wait to get it.
- ThatsShitToo, on 01/13/2008, -7/+1Nothing great really and true the camera isnt that great!
- muqas, on 01/13/2008, -4/+1Are you kidding me, it's almost a HD camera. (1600 * 1200 = 1.92 MP VS. 1080 * 1920 = 2.07MP)
Now there's something to think about.- pytis, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Megapixels are nothing if the quality sucks..the lighting adjustments, the autofocus..etc..id rather get a really good 1MP camera than a ***** 6MP camera.
- DaffyDuck, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1True. If you ask me, all cameras on phones suck. It's just different degrees of suckage.
- pytis, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Megapixels are nothing if the quality sucks..the lighting adjustments, the autofocus..etc..id rather get a really good 1MP camera than a ***** 6MP camera.

- mal1964, on 01/13/2008, -8/+1Did you spend to much on the phone,so now you cant buy a mac that has a cam?
- banmaster, on 01/13/2008, -5/+2Or a $15 webcam, you know, a device actually designed to be a webcam.
- mal1964, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Before my post i thought the phone plugged into a PC as a cam, after i was duh, all you need is the phone.
- 0rdinary, on 01/13/2008, -8/+1Wow... You would you reduce a 400$ super-gadget to a device you can buy for 350$ less?
- wiihuck, on 01/13/2008, -4/+2for $50 more, i'll take the one that's a phone too
- node3, on 01/13/2008, -1/+6How does it reduce the rest of the iPhone?
- starkruzr, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5No amount of sense is proof against stupid, knee-jerk, bad logic.
- adc89, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3Don't use the calendar either! You can buy one for $399.50 less!
- xen0blue, on 01/13/2008, -9/+1
- DaffyDuck, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2No *****, Sherlock.
- Lorenz123, on 01/13/2008, -4/+2My old Motorola A925 had this function with a 3rd party app. Fun for 10 minutes .....
- multiquote, on 01/13/2008, -4/+1It would be cool if you could swivel the camera to view you so that you could use it in chat rooms like http://www.oohya.net
- drcreek, on 01/13/2008, -0/+6Someone should so stream macworld tomorrow using this method
- beerbarron, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2hell yes they should, when the official sdk is released, I look forward to this!
- Mizzike, on 01/13/2008, -1/+2These kids keep getting younger and younger. Pretty soon, we're going to have geeks who hack products that haven't even been made yet, while they're still in the womb.
- shafiq, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1anyone heard of movino? i can do the same thing too.
- DaffyDuck, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Congrats. Here's a cookie.
- beerbarron, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2Although I found the first post negative, I wonder if your holding it screen facing forwards, you get to see what your streaming? Would be real handy, for remote desktop help
- rento, on 01/13/2008, -7/+1rrrrrr yeah... welcome to 2005 iPhone. No seriously I am happy for you, gotta be hard being so expensive and reaching such features, well done. Yep.
- skellener, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Leave it to third party developers to surpass Apple in useful products. Apple hasn't replaced the iSight camera they discontinued in Dec. 2006. So unless you have a newer Apple 'book' or iMac, Apple has not provided a hardware solution for using iChat. Bad Apple!
Here's a perfect example of something Apple itself COULD have done using it's own technology, but didn't. Kudos for making Apple technology more useful guys! - vw195, on 01/13/2008, -6/+0Congrats Apple !! Although we WM users have had this capability for a LOOONGGG time.. but you are catching up :)
http://www.ateksoft.com/webcamplus.html- jonshipman, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1$17.90? no thanks...
one good thing about the iphone is that all the apps are free. WM, has its benefits - but every app costs money. And not $5 either, IM+ is $40. $40! For an instant messaging app!
- jonshipman, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1$17.90? no thanks...
- originaladam, on 01/13/2008, -1/+3Too bad you still cant use your iPhone to capture video to its self.
- joeycerone, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2This. is. cool.
- sevenalive, on 01/13/2008, -6/+1"an iPhone is way up there on the cool quotient." Ya, i don't think so.
- nocash23, on 01/14/2008, -5/+0use your iphone for just about anything other than a phone. what a piece of crap.
- arctic, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2You have no cash.... lmao!
- nocash23, on 01/15/2008, -0/+0not enough cash to be a brainless consumer zombie i guess. oh and by the way, "lmao", "brb" and all the other "internet slang" is for 13 year old girls. maybe you can use your pink rhinestone covered iphone to text the rest of your american idol watching, latte drinking, yuppie friends...bitch.
- arctic, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2You have no cash.... lmao!
- kkiran, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Interesting project - particularly using as a SpyPhone cam... kudos dude!
- YoGramMamma, on 01/14/2008, -1/+1If this is released and works well after the SDK... i can see it being pretty cool.
hey, ichat friend, I'm ichatting with you on my desk, you know, using the built in isight on my iMac... oh... whats that you say, you want to see the new car thats in my garage? oh what about my new dinette set i spent 49 dollars on at IKEA?? oh sure, well i will just switch over the video to my iphone and so you like that, while i can still hear your convo from the speaker in the iphone.....
ahh how nice...
sure beats lugging the imac around!!! - MrViklund, on 01/14/2008, -1/+1Just wait until the SDK is out. That's all I'm saying. Just wait. Why waste your energy now when you might have to redo everything. Guess some haven't heard that an SDK is on the way.
- tfitzgerald, on 01/14/2008, -2/+0Wow, umm that is SOOO 2004, I know, I used to do that demo on stage, in 2004/2005 Cept we did it over BT or Wifi. we were able to switch video sources between built in webcam and the phone, on the fly. So, once again nice attempt at innovation. As they say, there is nothing new under the sun.
- CuddyBuddy, on 01/14/2008, -1/+1Hmmm...iPhone or iAll?
- rothgar, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2and now for something completely different.
http://digg.com/tech_news/Turn_your_WM5_Smartphone ...
