- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16nice i like how you made a video and not just an image
- cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i hadn't thought of recording the swarm as a video... when the announcement was going on and the news was starting to hit i was at work and i was wondering what the swarm looked like... our IT guys said that "non-industry traffic" on our network shot through the roof during the announcement.
good stuff. great submission.
dugg. - skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Here are some more pictures of the iPhone story in the first hour that it was posted. The pictures are better than the video at showing how insane it got.
http://neutyp.com/digg/swarm.html - PimpinOnWelfare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I love how digg makes digg!!
- clangan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31Phone to rule them all.
- digg-dugg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4FAKE. this is video from the upcoming game 'spore'.

- jacobcarbonero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10The swarm feature is ridiculous!!!
- DGSK387, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5awesome. I remember something similar happening when the news broke about Steve Irwin's death. this is a bit more though.
- iching, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Thanks Digg Labs it was totally nuts and that is an understatement.
Very Revolutionary Products to say the least.- joshuacw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Reminds me of an old Apple technology from the mid-90's called Hotsauce.
- migurski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43The full-res version of that video can be viewed at http://s3.amazonaws.com/com.stamen.video/Swarm-iPhone-1024x768.mp4
- iamhumble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Kudos to you!
People that post helpful comments like these is what makes DIGG so great. - jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Do you REALLY need a full res version for this :P
To each their own I guess - iamhumble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yes, I do. I ran out of carrots today so my eyes are bad. Plus, I am like using 2048 by 1536 here and too lazy to switch it.

@jamsea:
the Digg Swarm in HD after the jump! - modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason for high-res is so that people can check to see if their own usernames show up anywhere in the video capture. =P
If only this video were several hours long... - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL - Did you know the whole carrots thing was a lie invented to explain why British planes could spot u-boats in WW2? They didn't want to let the germans know about radar, so they made up a lie that also helped to soften the blow of rationing. ;)
- iamhumble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Kudos to you!
- jumanji69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36does any else not quite understand how the swarm feature works?
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Yes, it's an enigma wrapped in a riddle.
- S1ngular1ty1, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1Isn't it obvious? It is just showing the uses who are looking at a submission at any one time.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I dont get the white lines between stories.
- meamog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@drizek
Unless I'm mistaken, those lines represent diggers digging stories, IE, showing the trends of diggers in real time. The thicker the line, the more people digging those "connected" stories. - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm not quite sure what everything indicates or is supposed to represent. I occasionally view it just to get a visualization of traffic, but as a "tool" I would need a further understanding of what it all means with some kind of a guide - which I'm not sure exists.
- aquigley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd guess some simple type of Force Directed Layout algorithm is behind it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Force-based_algorithms - cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17To my understanding if for example a digger named "bob" dugg "Macworld Keynote" then he will be represented as a yellow bit on the side of the story. As more people digg the story then more yellow bits swarm it. Then lets say that bob dugg "iPhone Announced" afterwards, his yellow bit will move from the pervious story to the new one. As his yellow bit jumps over a white line links the two stories, to show that the person moved from one to the next. As more people do this then the white line will get thicker, indicating the trends on digg.
[sorry if that was a bit long, and perhaps patronizing. but hope it helps]
I think swarm is cool, apart from the fact that im addicted to middle-clicking to open in new tab. I know swarm opens links in new windows (and you can force new windows to be new tabs) but I hate it when it switches focus to the newly opened window. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a post in the digg blog that explains how they work.
- captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A great screen shot of a spambot on swarm via dip42

http://digg.com/software/Who_dugg_that_crap_Digg_Spambot_live - ApplCmptrDood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Digg Swarm is a more lyrical view of Digg. Stories come in as circles with the title inside of them, and diggers “swarm” around these stories when they digg them. Every time a story gets dugg, it increases in size — so the bigger the story, the more active it is. As people digg more stories, they move from circle to circle, and increase in size. You might see enormous diggers moving quickly from story to story; those seem to be people digging without taking the time to read stories…
Stories start off placed randomly on the screen, but as they get dugg, their positions change depending on who’s digging them. Stories that are closer together are being dugg by the same users, and you can roll over stories to see these connections. The thicker the line, the more diggers in common that story has — which starts to suggest connections between stories over time. And selecting a story provides more detail about it.
Hope you enjoy, more to come soon." - from Kevin's blog post :-)
- Hayes, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4 I really have to stop digging stuff just because Kevin Rose does.
- modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@Hayes, that made me laugh, but down you go.
- atomicfission92, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Cool stuff
- KragTheDigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2/dugg for gratuitous use of Swarm, which is a Good Thing ! :)
~K - mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12One question. How was this submitted four DAYS ago and just made the front page?

"Kevin has posted an explanation of the Digg algorithm on the Digg Blog. They have been monitoring the stories this past week and have made some changed which will go live today. This means no more stories sitting in the queue w/100+ Diggs!"

- mr1saturn, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Fantastic, another iPhone related article! I certainly haven't had my fill of iPhone and iPhone related stories. Please, keep them coming!

Mind you, I really like the swarm. It certainly is a fun thing to watch. - jamima69z, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5i swear to god,if i could get my hands on an iphone,i'd smash it with a brick and post the video to youtube.

- RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think the iPhone will be in that big of a shortage for people to care if / when they smash it.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27It's like watching sperm fighting over an egg.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, similar to the iPhone display at MacWorld.
- ruslanr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1holly crap.
I submitted this 4 days ago...
http://digg.com/apple/Digg_Swarma_after_iPhone_announcement- HOTM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Maybe cause no one knows what Digg Swarma is?
- mpnsf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2if you wanted to record something like that and didn't know how to, what type of person would you be looking for to help you and where would you go to find that type of person? (serious question here)
- RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Not as much as Sadam's.
- ocha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1DiggSwarm is awesome for big news events.
It's fun watching a real time visualization of the digg landscape beyond just checking the front page and refreshing. - moncur, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Dude...
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"Im in yer digg stealin yer homepage!"
- Drood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Swarm is really interesting to watch, and my kids find it fascinating, and we were watched the iPhone story...
But capturing a video of it to whore yourself on Digg is just sad, and pretty much sums up every hardcore user of the site.
What next? Hidden camera footage of Kevin Rose's enormous *****? - ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know I'll get dugg down as being an idiot here, but can someone explain to me what the lines between stories represent?
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe read some of the comments above?
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ahh...thanks, that was easy, even considering how drunk I am..sigh
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1OMG iPhone.................................................................................................................................OMG iPhone...........................................................OMG iPhone...................................................................OMG iPhone....................................................The gayest ***** i have ever seen yet on digg. OMG apple made a face melting easily broken tied to AT&T phone. I too am flaccid with rage.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2face melting? that's news to me..
- bblades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A story on how a story is popular? I am psyched about the iPhone and how Apple is going to force the hand of cellphone makers to make a decent product for once and not stand by ancient technology cough Palm cough. This is just lame though.
- bipple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont get this at all, can someone with the security of a true teacher explain to me where one can access the illustrations of a swarm in progress on this site.
thanks in advance- saralk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Go to the very bottom of this page, and under "Digg Labs" click on "SWARM"
