This will increase your depth of field (what you're actually doing is making the hole the light goes through smaller), so you can avoid the blurriness you're seeing here:

        Adjust the number until you get the correct range. With practice you'll be able to figure out the aperture you need without trial and error. Also, to avoid using the flash, you may need to bump up the ISO (usually found in a menu of sorts) as you increase that number, otherwise the picture may be blurry for another reason, not enough light.
