- never been mugged?
How about your mother mugged... or your daughter raped?
With or without guns, if people routinely say criminals getting f'd up when they try to mug / steal... maybe it would be a deterrent.
Not talking about hanging / lynching. Just saying that if you try to mug me and I have _no_ idea how how you are going to take it I have the right to snap your elbow so that I can see a bone or two sticking out through the skin.
Not cutting an ear off or a nose ... but snapping a major joint so that you'll think twice next time.
Would crime go down in the area of citizens, seeing a mugging in progress, ***** up the assailant but did not hit their head / do life-threatening damage? - Catsmacking, on 06/21/2008, -18/+15nycmac, the guy stole a purse. You can't compare that to a daughter getting raped. The deterrence for criminals should be the justice system, not people behaving as barbaric as the mugger by ganging up on him and repeatedly stomping him in the face.
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 06/21/2008, -13/+10Catsmacking: wrong
- popfrogs, on 06/21/2008, -6/+13@Catsmacking: When "the system" is so broken down that thugs like this think it's ok to commit crimes like this, the people have no choice but to deliver justice personally.
Personally I found the video disgusting due to the passive passengers. I imagine these were the same type of sheep that baa'ed all the way to the Twin Towers at the hands of 5 men. Americans just don't have any guts anymore, we expect someone to save us but never realize that someone is US. - lbdinh, on 06/21/2008, -4/+14It's a simple rule, if you're man enough to mug someone, you better be man enough to be prepared to get your ass kicked in. My mother was mugged and brutally beaten so no sympathy from me for that mugger.
Why the hell should I have to ever walk around looking over my shoulders all the time. - Catsmacking, on 06/21/2008, -10/+5Christ people, he wasn't beating up someone he was merely stealing a purse. The guy got his face kicked in several times because of it. That isn't vigilante behavior because of a broken system, that is taking your anger out at someone in an absurdly cruel manner.
Does that mean the man shouldn't have been stopped or defense isn't acceptable (and even amusing in the right circumstances)? No. Of course not. But the people who were cheering the fact that a man got kicked in the face several times by a crowd of people have a really perverted sense of the criminal justice system.
Also, please stop comparing this man to a rapist or using examples of your mother getting beaten by a mugger. There is such a thing as context. All muggers do not get put under one umbrella. Again. He ran with a purse. Wrong but please don't excuse extreme physical damage because of it.
Also, if it had been a person with authority beating up a mugger I severely doubt diggers would be cheering for the police man. So what makes the mugger in that situation any less culpable? - freshgrease, on 06/22/2008, -1/+9If you show weakness in the least bit dealing with these people, they will take advantage of it. Kick their ass till they get an injury that lasts a while to remind them of the consequences of their actions. I realize it's harsh, but these people know nothing but violence.
In my eyes, attacking someone and stealing are seen the same. You steal a purse or other asset, you ruin a person financially. You attack someone, you ruin their body (worst case scenario). Why should I differ punishment between two types of crime of similar life-altering results? It'd be better if you cleaned the crap of the street, than played with it with a stick.

Also, I agree with Catsmack to an extent. But you can't always rely on the police everywhere, all the time.Though, the attacker could have easily had a gun, so, I can't complain about people who don't do anything. It's not that they're "sheep," it's just that they don't want to engage in a fight and risk getting injured or killed. - PlaystationGuru, on 06/22/2008, -0/+4Hmmm.. - TheMoniker, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6It's the bystander effect and it applies to men as well. You should look at the literature on this sort of thing, it's quite disturbing. Get enough people together and they will, a surprisingly significant amount of the time: ignore the pleas from a rape victim as there is a rape (and later murder, as I recall) happening just on the street outside their door; everyone will sit around as they assume someone else will help a heart attack victim, etc.

- DulcetTone, on 06/22/2008, -1/+0I was mugged once, and 15 minutes later happened upon the mugger when I had a friend with me (all persons male). We counter-mugged him, chasing him and tackling him. He wound up on the subway tracks, fleeing on foot into the tunnel. The only thing that caused a hiccup in the counter-mugging was that some male subway patrons cautiously but effectively intervened to help free the mugger as we grappled with him.

As I've said before, I'd happily face any legal consequences of defending someone from a unfair attack like that and feel that anyone with any kind of soul would feel the same way. - lbdinh, on 06/21/2008, -2/+7Same here. I can't believe how selfish some people are.
If two guys want to go at it and fight, then okay, I wound't get involved. But if some harmless person was getting brutally beaten for no good reason, I can't stand by and watch.
Even if you're not the fighting type, at least try to do SOMETHING to stop it. Tell the attacker you already called the police and that he should run right now, or something. Co'mon people, be creative. - ElderBieler, on 06/22/2008, -0/+6Seriously, this world is full with a bunch of spineless pusses who mask their cowardice in elevated theories of self preservation.

So I m in Columbus a couple weeks ago. And I'm checkin my money when some kid grabs my $10 I had out. So I chase his ass down. Right when I get to him I get whacked by 4 of his friends. Then out of nowhere as far as these kids were concerned my friends come and take them down. I get up and my friend has the kid that took my money in a headlock. I knock his ass on the ground with a real hard shot. We got my money back and one of the idiots dropped their phone so we took that too. Fortunately for the girl, my friend had a soul and common decency and decided to intervene. Ignoring our school's "Zero Tolerance" fighting policy (that is, anyone involved in a fight, regardless of who started it or why you were involved would automatically be suspended from school), my friend literally tossed the thug across the table and then defended himself from the thug's equally thuggish friends. Luckily for my friend, after watching the CCTV video the school temporarily suspended the "Zero Tolerance" policy and deemed him a hero. Shame on the other passengers on the bus who were capable of intervening.

Someone stupid and weak getting involved doesn't make these sorts of random violent acts better.
- HubrisDeadPan, on 06/21/2008, -8/+26That woman directly behind the mugged guy was heavy set, she don't seem weak to me. And what is with this 'they're women' excuse? - curiousgrge, on 06/21/2008, -6/+1Well the bus driver could've certainly done something. He/she could've hit the brakes really hard assuming there wasn't any traffic behind him or assuming the bus wasn't at a complete stop.

Oh yeah, pull your ***** pants up! - ohmahgawd, on 06/21/2008, -1/+8I can't blame the lady with the child, but the heavy set one sitting alone and directly behind the attack should have stepped in. She just sat there with an apathetic look on her face, that lazy *****. Unless she's utterly disabled and we weren't able to see, she has no excuse to not step in and help. Also if you look closely, there are people at the back of the bus; they move as if to get a better look at the attack when it starts... and the bus driver, well, she/he could have done so much to stop this too. - ohmahgawd, on 06/21/2008, -0/+52You mean they actually suspended the "Zero Tolerance" Policy? Wow. I didn't know schools had the heart and intelligence to do that in such instances anymore. I have heard of instances like this many times where the school refuses to suspend their stupid policy, and the HERO was thrown in the gutter with the same lack of respect as the ***** kid who started it all.
The worst case I've personally come across is my Uncle's kid was in school, minding his own business, when some stupid bully came over, and tried kicking his ass. Obviously the kid fought back, throwing punches and trying to get away, but he was cornered. When the camera was reviewed, they saw what happened, but stood by their policy... and suspended both students. The kid was an honor roll student too, with, until then, perfect attendance.- Spiffjiggins, on 06/21/2008, -0/+28My best friend in highschool was loading books into his locker when this platinum blonde mullet wearing trailer trash douche blind-sided him with a John Wayne hay-maker punch. - bentrinh, on 06/21/2008, -1/+3What? People (including myself) at my school district have been suspended for defending themselves, while the attacker gets no punishment at all.
- Hillsfar, on 06/22/2008, -1/+9I remember being suspended for defending myself. Yeah, like I was supposed to just stand there and be beaten? - miamiflashfan, on 06/22/2008, -0/+5Wouldn't your Uncle's kid be your cousin?
But seriously, these Zero Tolerance rules are a joke. A couple years ago in our high school a kid got beaten pretty badly by some random bully. He tried defending himself and got a few weak punches in but the kid who started it really got the best of him. There was a teacher there that of course was trying to be a hero and yelled "break it up!" and whatever else, but of course the kid just kept beating on him. Both kids got suspended, 5 days in total: 3 days for fighting, and 2 days for "failure to abide by the orders of high school staff."

- Versh, on 06/21/2008, -1/+15Yep, Columbus Ohio suuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.
Once walking home from work at 11:00 PM, I saw a COTA bus stop and release it's passengers on the corner of Broad and High (downtown specifically), and one man took 10 steps from the bus and started to urinate against a wall. Meanwhile, some woman was slapping her toddler's ear calling him a "Little *****." Then some homeless man seeing my work uniform asked for some bus fair, and when I said "Here's 73 cents, that's all I have on me", he complained "Mutha *****." Yeah, to summarize, the Columbus public transportation is like a human garbage collection system. However, a majority of the passengers are just the "silent aggravated on the verge of irritation" types, so I guess it isn't all bad.- KaJuN4, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2Ah that brings back memories. I was very often the "silent aggravated on the verge of irritation", especially on Ohio State's crappy bus system. Just one of the many reasons I had to get out of there quickly.

- franklymister, on 06/21/2008, -3/+41I'm a gun owner, but I don't think a gun would have done much in this situation.
Even if he had been carrying a concealed handgun, there wasn't time to react and reach for his weapon. If he did get to his gun, there's no saying that the mugger couldn't have overpowered him and taken it - or the victim might have fired and missed, and hit another person.
Another armed passenger might have been able to stop the mugging, but no one on that bus seemed like they were going to stop anything.- ElAssoWipo, on 06/21/2008, -4/+7Imagine if everybody else had a gun.
I do agree with you, but if other people had a gun, this situation would've ended quickly.- franklymister, on 06/21/2008, -1/+7If the right person were there with a gun, yes. The trouble is, the right person wasn't there, either with or without. Just a bunch of people too scared and cowed by life to do anything.
- iticu, on 06/21/2008, -4/+7Or the attacked could have had a gun aswell, and then both would be shooting everywhere in panic.
And missing your target on a bus? Well, I suppose they could just pray that the streets around them aren't crowded. - ksgant, on 06/21/2008, -3/+4Interesting theory...though if "everyone" had a gun, then how many accidental shootings would there be? Lets say for instance someone is being mugged and a bystander takes out their weapon to defend the victim. Now, he has a gun out, pointing it at someone.
Now along comes bystander number 2 and all they see is a person holding a gun over someone that's laying on the ground and another person with a lot of yelling. Does the new bystander quickly size up the situation to the correct conclusion...or will they make a mistake and assume the person with the gun is the perp?
When that idiot shot up Virginia Tech, if others were allowed to carry guns, they would have taken him out...but after they take him out, in all the confusion, who's to say someone else may have gotten someone wrong...then they themselves mistaken for the shooter. (In reality though, there may have been far fewer deaths than the one guy taking so many out...but hopefully you get my point).
I know, a lot of "what if's" in my argument. I'm just saying we should think things through before making blanket statements like "Imagine if everyone else had a gun". It could cause more problems than it solves. - esfisher, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1@ksgant
If everybody had a gun, no one would be dumb enough to hold their gun in a threatening manner in public. - Frostek, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1I don't know about that - there doesn't seem to any shortage of foolish people in the world.
- JudgeMonkey, on 06/21/2008, -2/+3Did you see how the other people failed to do a single thing? Who cares if he shot someone else, they weren't doing anything with their lives anyway. Make sure you have some grenades, and trip mines, then u could stop a whole gang of teens attacking you. ..I'd rather live in a country where no citizens are allowed to have any firearms.
- personalj, on 06/22/2008, -1/+2Move to the UK, they don't have firearms but you can enjoy living in a society where the crime rate is twice that of the US. Besides, criminals will always have firearms.

- maexus, on 06/21/2008, -2/+5I don't think whether or not you have a gun on you increases or decreases the chances of a mugger or thug carrying a gun.
- itsbob, on 06/21/2008, -5/+8It does however increase the chance of a mugger taking the gun from you and using it.
- dood, on 06/21/2008, -3/+2I guess the key here is to only encourage non-muggers to carry guns. Good luck with that targeted campaign. Heh.
- vtnerd, on 06/22/2008, -1/+4@ dood
Yeah, because the muggers and criminals are all lined up to get fingerprinted and pass their background checks for their concealed carry permits. Oh that's right, the criminals don't bother with those steps because THEY ARE CRIMINALS.
- maexus, on 06/21/2008, -2/+5I don't think whether or not you have a gun on you increases or decreases the chances of a mugger or thug carrying a gun.
- radsprack, on 06/21/2008, -7/+12This logic of yours confuses and infuriates me. If...what...how. Alright, let's say that this guy had a gun. He could have possible pulled it out and shot the guy. But the attacker could have also had a gun and this theft would have been over much faster.
- squaredUP, on 06/21/2008, -0/+5No. If they both had guns we would be watching a video of one bad ass close quarters shootout. Not just some plain old fist fight.
- dood, on 06/21/2008, -1/+2We might've even caught one of them shooting the mom or the kid on accident.
- vtnerd, on 06/22/2008, -0/+4@ radsprack
If a giant space alien landed their UFO on the bus there would be a bunch of smashed people, but that doesn't have anything to do with the situation either. Crazy what-if scenarios are no substitute for facts. Guns are used millions of times per year in the US (2.5 million to be more precise) defensively and the overwhelming majority of the time without any shots being fired. Did you get that? Pointing a gun at a criminal's face is enough to get them to stop and that should be no great surprise. Burglars in the US admit to being more afraid of armed homeowners than the police. Guns work as a deterrent and if you think that kid would have kept fighting with a gun pointed at him, you're watching too many movies.
The attacker is a criminal. Criminals aren't allowed to carry concealed weapons, but they do it anyways. Responsible, law-abiding citizens should (and thankfully do) have the right to defend their lives with the notable exception of college campuses.
< off topic >
The assholes in the administration here at Virginia Tech had a "sound policy" preventing weapons on campus at least a year in advance of our massacre. A whole lot of ***** good their "sound policy" did for the 32 defenseless victims who tried to hide behind desks. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws have guns.
< / off topic >
- squaredUP, on 06/21/2008, -0/+5No. If they both had guns we would be watching a video of one bad ass close quarters shootout. Not just some plain old fist fight.
- HubrisDeadPan, on 06/21/2008, -5/+13I would rather have carried a non lethal weapon like brass knuckles or something to severely beat that mugger with. I'd gain much more satisfaction if the thug lived with severe injuries not only to his body but to his pride and ego. It's possible it could teach him a lesson and he could change his life and become a better citizen. There's no need to jump straight to a lethal solution to a common thug.
- wreckosaurus, on 06/21/2008, -2/+7He's not going to change. Trust me, you think after one failed robbery he's going to decide to go to college and become a decent citizen, he'll just be sure to bring a knife the next time. Besides, brass knuckles are illegal, fire arms aren't.
- BossKey, on 06/21/2008, -3/+1"There's no need to jump straight to a lethal solution to a common thug."
That's one of the huge problems with using guns, an deadly offensive weapon, as a "defense." You go from zero to lethal with nothing in between. If everyone has a gun, the only way to win is to draw and shoot before anyone else does. Which works fine as long as the bad guys don't draw first, and in that case what have guns solved?- compulsive1, on 06/21/2008, -0/+10If everyone has a gun, situations like this one are much less likely to arise in the first place.
Just like thugs don't jump a tough looking group of individuals and go for the easy single person target, the knowledge that an aggressive act will bring on possibly deadly repercussions from bystanders puts certain breaks on this type of behavior. Self preservation is stronger instinct than greed. - BossKey, on 06/22/2008, -1/+1Sure, but if everyone has guns and someone decides a conflict needs to be resolved, you have a far higher chance that it's gonna involve the use of guns. That's far too steep of an acceleration curve for a conflict.
Take a neighborhood saturated with armed gang members, for example. Everybody's got a gun. Does that mean you have a wonderfully peaceful neighborhood? Shouldn't that be your ideal neighborhood? A place where your family feels safer? What...you mean it isn't? - vtnerd, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2Guns are used defensively in the US 2.5 million times per year on average and the overwhelming majority of those cases do not involve any shots being fired. That's a whole heck of a lot of "non-lethal" gun uses if I do say so myself.
The non-lethal part of a gun is when you point it at the attacker and tell them to stop. The lethal part comes in when they decide to continue threatening your life and continues until they stop their attack or are no longer a threat.
In other words, this is not a huge problem with guns and it's not even a problem. - compulsive1, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3@BossKey.
Well, if you HAD to live in a high crime neighborhood would you chose to own a gun or not? I live in a fairly peaceful city and don't feel the need to carry gun, but I own one for home protection. If the economy tanks and crime goes up I will probably get a concealed carry permit and start carrying while I walk the neighborhood with my dog especially at night.
This is a subject of a recent supreme court case in DC, where people are asking the courts to nullify the local law prohibiting all private gun ownership.
Owning a gun is not a magic panacea that will protect you from any and all violence, just like having an education does not guarantee one's economic security, or wearing seat belts does not guarantee survival in a crash. But, all go a long way in achieving their intended goal.
- compulsive1, on 06/21/2008, -0/+10If everyone has a gun, situations like this one are much less likely to arise in the first place.
- ProfessorFoo, on 06/21/2008, -2/+10Wow I didn't know digg was full of stone cold killers. I tend to think of killing someone as a final resort, but I guess the world would be better if you could just shoot everyone who inconveniences you. Yeah, that is probably an understatement of what he did, but wouldn't a taser or mace work nearly as well as a gun? Even if you did manage to kill him without getting yourself or someone else shot instead, you SHOULD feel terrible about it for the rest of your life if you are a decent human being. Killing someone in real life isn't like killing someone in a video game, no matter what happyseamonster wants to think.

- Ebulating, on 06/22/2008, -2/+3I'm from Wisconsin and I feel the same way. I am so sick of hyper violent black thugs like that guy preying on people, both white and black. If you read the crime statistics, you would know that more violent crime is committed by blacks, proportional to population. Wisconsin has VERY little crime, except for the predominantly black parts of Milwaukee, where shootings are incredibly common.
- learnmorepanda, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1@Ebulating - We appreciate the emotional response supported by your anecdotal evidence.
I prefer my dumb thug that robs me physically than the the smart thug who robs me fiscally. A mean street gang's ability to destroy pales in comparison to that of large organized governmental, religious, and corporate organizations. Better yet, what ethnicity do these men tend to be, statistically speaking? But characterizations of evil white tyrants are not popular. Either way no matter how true the racist remark rings you cannot simplify people to that degree. Otherwise genocide is justified.
I'm not happy about what the boy did. But stressing the fact that this boy is black is small and is irrelevant, making your comment is intellectually worthless.
- vtnerd, on 06/22/2008, -1/+1I would feel terrible, but I would much rather kill an attacker than be killed. The victim, had he been armed in this case, had no way of knowing if his attacker has a gun or knife or any other weapon. The victim had no way of knowing if his attacker would leave him alone after taking his iPhone/iPod.
Why would you assume that someone who is beating you, unprovoked is going to leave you alive?
IF I had a concealed carry permit (and I don't yet, but I am pursuing it) and someone attacks me like that they're going to get a gun pointed at them with a verbal warning to stop. If they continue to threaten my life then they've made their decision and tied my hands. Assuming it is safe to discharge a firearm (ie. no innocent person directly behind or next to the attacker) and they refused to stop their attack, I would be within my rights to defend my life.
There's no question as to whether I would feel horrible that those choices had to be made or not, but I have a family and I would rather feel the weight of my actions for the rest of my life than give up and let an attacker do whatever they wanted.
There's a crude saying, "better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6" and though it sounds callous it's absolutely true.
If you think things should be different, I hear the UK doesn't believe in the right of self defense (anything that can be used as a weapon is not to be carried and guns are banned). You would be well warned that their rate of violent crime is much higher than in the US even though gun-related offenses are lower.
