- dzarkw, on 10/12/2007, -12/+91Its just sad how often Microsoft uses stock images in their ads and website. You'd think for a company with so much money they can put toward marketing, they would be able to take some of their own photos.

Just because they can afford to, doesn't mean they squander the money. Microsoft has a history for not inventing the wheel nor reinventing it. LYK OMGZ TEH CONSPIRACAE! - RenZ87, on 10/12/2007, -63/+21That is not a macbook nor an ibook. It looks more like a Vaio or some other white pc. Apple does not have a monopoly of white computers.

Yes, there are other white computers out there, but, as an owner of a Macbook, that is definitely one. Maybe a Viao or Averatec? Those are white too.
The one in this pic has just one headphone slot - the MB has two, headphone and mic. - slundal, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42Sorry for abusing the comment system but…
That is most definitely an iBook not a Macbook or any other white computer. If you look at the ports you can see that it has a big firewire port next to the USB ports and as far as I know only the only withe computers who has that are iBooks and Macbooks. Also since there is no microphone jack, only a headphone jack it can't be a Macbook. - essjay, on 10/12/2007, -13/+119I guess the irony is, if it was a MacBook it could run Vista under Parallels or Boot camp but seeing as its an iBook (definitely an iBook btw) theres no way it could run Vista (seeing as it would be PPC and not Intel). And lets face it, have you ever seen anyone that happy using Vista? I think thats the dead giveaway its OSX.
- speiibinder, on 10/12/2007, -34/+2Can someone get a picture of an IBook that looks exactly like the one in the ad because I can't. I'm more inclined to believe that it is in fact a white PC.

Yes, but why would they bother? It costs a fair amount of money to get a single shot and all they need is a stock photo of people using a computer. - sauron256, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20...or maybe Microsoft don't discourage the use of Windows on a Mac as much as you think?
After all, Microsoft only develop software, not hardware. They couldn't care less whether you're running Vista on a PC or a Mac, so long as they've made the sale. - themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I found it pretty funny that someone tried digging an imageshack image
- mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2It would be fine if they showed a computer that could actually run Windows. Ironic, yes, but it would still make sense. iBooks, last time I checked, weren't capabable of this.

"If Microsoft made laptops, maybe this would have meaning"
If Vista ran on an iBook, maybe your post would have meaning.
The irony is pretty hard to miss:
1. MS has an ad featuring a product on which the thing being advertised *can't even run*.
2. Vista has been plagued by reporters and consumers comparing it with OS X (which actually *does* run on the iBook).
3. MS and Apple have a long-standing rivalry (which goes back to the very beginnings of the PC, and the early days at both companies). The rivalry includes Jobs vs Gates, Mac OS vs Windows and, yes, even Mac vs PC.
Even though MS does not make a PC, their fate is inextricably intertwined with the PC. So much so, in fact, that MS has defined PC standards and works closely with all major PC companies.
Aside: it's interesting to note that the three rivalries listed are, at the same time, seemingly contradictorily friendly with each other. Jobs and Gates are long-time friends, Apple and MS both make apps for the other OS, and Mac and PC hardware are highly cross-compatible. - darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I JUST REALIZED! - weisen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"Obviously Microsoft is not in competition with apple in hardware so Microsoft has every right to use their computer as long it is not showing the OS."
Personally I think that the whole thing is much ado about nothing, however even if they were in competition with Apple for hardware, I think that they'd still have the "right" to show a MacBook-esque computer.
Which article of the Constitution do you think that we are arguing here when you speak of "rights?" - barbarac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5People. Microsoft obviously does not do it's own advertising. What probably happened is that a careless agency used stock photos that were either not checked or not presented to the appropriate person at MS.
Basically a failure of process. Not a digg for me. - RenZ87, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6The dispute of PC vs Mac is really just a one sided marketing battle. Apple is fighting hard to gain market share and Microsoft could care less. Why don't you ever see Microsoft attack Apple? Apple ads try to do two thing. The MacBook's giant track pad is without a doubt the finest laptop track pad I've ever used, PC or Mac. Two-finger X-Y scrolling is the only way to go. - xzourska, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The MacBook and iBook are both nice laptops and a very well known laptop. All companies with big marketing budgets use many stock photos to save on cost.
I think that even if Microsoft advertises Vista on an Apple they will not loose their main source of licensing income...OEMs like Dell, and HP. So if they loose a few individuals purchasing a Apple instead of a Dell of other OEM Windows PC, they will make more from some of those people purchasing a box copy of Vista. Some Apple users people getting a box copy so they can work with some old Windows Apps they own, Windows Exclusive Applicaions or any poplular windows game. Counting the capitalization problems and missing punctuation, that's 9 errors, unless the writer meant to say "It's too thick to be an iBook." in which case it would be 10 errors. - Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@ DaffyDuck, English may not be his first language, give him a break.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Darcy,
Punctuation is used in all languages as far as I know. - mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Darcy, if you're correcting Davidbt about correct grammar, you might want to know that numbers under the value of '10' are spelled out.
Jkoke, never start a sentence with a pronoun, and never start the next sentence with the previous sentence's first word.
Why does everyone comment about spelling grammar when their own posts make them look like hypocrites?
-=|Mgkwho - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"That's the most spelling and grammar errors I have ever seen packed into a 6 word sentence."
You can obviously write a grammatically correct 6 word sentence in Chinese. Or Hindi. Can't you? Why does everyone think the whole world has to know perfect English to be able to participate in any thing of a quasi global nature? Don't tell me it's the most widely used language - Chinese and Hindi beat English for 1st and 2nd spot. - Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@mgkwho
"Why does everyone comment about spelling grammar when their own posts make them look like hypocrites?"
That should be:
Why does everyone comment about spelling AND grammar when their own posts make them look like hypocrites? - Racerboy1320, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Mgkwho
"Jkoke, never start a sentence with a pronoun, and never start the next sentence with the previous sentence's first word."
Counting is not a pronoun, and he only has one sentence in his post that isn't a quote. - mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Racerboy1320-
Since when is "It's" counting?
And yes, I realized after it was too late to edit I needed the 'and' :/.

- Maverick18x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This type of thing was much funnier back when you couldn't run Windows on a mac...
- scjones, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Little girl: "WOW MOM Vista totally sucks!
MoM: "I know honey, isn't it hilarious?"
Together: "Tee hee hee hee" - RandoTheKing, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3OMG A WHITE LAPTOP
MUST BE A IBOOK!!! OMGOGMOGM
Buried for inaccurate.- GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4... because it is an ibook. Look at the ports down the right side decending by size. No PC laptop maker does that but Apple.
Blocked for being an idiot. - RandoTheKing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Previous posters have stated before it's clearly not an iBook. Now shut the ***** up *****. Go get butthurt elsewhere. Until I see a logo, you're ***** outta luck. Do you honestly think Microsoft would do something that stupid? Go outside.

- scjones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Um, woops.
- Velocity211, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3it's an ibook.
- Adrianc333, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1So what?
Windows = Software
MacBook = Hardware.
If you want to look deeply into it, just think...Vista is the choice over Mac OS X, on Mac hardware. - fittysix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0It could be an Asus model of the macbook (W7J for example), it's well known and publicized that asus manufactures the macbook in the first place, this would explain the port similarities and differences, plus possibly the thickness difference (as asus doesn't necessarily make the casing for the macbook)
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2its intelligent actually, Microsoft is saying, "Finally, we can run on the last 5% of the market. We Win!"
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The only time I said wow is when I saw vista's price tag and sys requirements.
- smilesofkarli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i just say it's funny. no need to go into depth on what kind of apple computer it is because either way...it is an apple. microsoft does have to look over ads and obviously they said yes to it...it's just a matter if they want to acknowledge it.
- peregrine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I am sick of image shack are these people fing dense? I mean COME ON. If your going to post something to a site thats known for pushing alot of traffic why put it on a site that has a limit? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH USING FLICKR? OR maybe they just spend so much ***** time taking damn pictures of ***** that you kow will get you to the front page cause it has the words 'vista' and 'mac' dammit im sick of idiots.
- Quadcore, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Where does it say exactly it's a mac? .... You've just been hoaxed again!
- guerchmann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is for dzarkw who wrote "Microsoft uses stock images in their ads and website. You'd think for a company with so much money they can put toward marketing, they would be able to take some of their own photos."
Do you realise this is probably an in-store ad department creating the ads? Microsoft does not create ads for all stores in the world. I've seen worst things, and none created by Microsoft.- mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The fact is Microsoft is still paying for them, and has the final say on the ads. The ads are for Microsoft, I don't see how that affects the agency that makes them. Regardless if this was sanctioned by Microsoft or Microcenter, other ads are purchased by Microsoft. End of story.

- sk8ordiemofo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Microsoft are hypocritical idiots. Period.
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why does this make them hypocritical? Please give me your amazing reasoning.
- sarcasmopro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Look, for the last time: The laptop in the ad is an iBook! That's it! End of story. If you don't believe it, find someone who owns one and ask to take a close look at it. Hold it in your hands, put your eyeballs directly on to the plastic if it helps, set it up on a table and stand exactly in the spot that is the camera's point of view when the picture for the ad was taken, hire a blonde woman and her daughter to sit in front of it and smile if you have to. I guarantee you will see, IT... IS... AN... iBook! And don't argue that the laptop in the picture might be a shell or a prop made to look exactly like an iBook. I don't care if it's really a giant bar of soap carved into the shape of an iBook, that's not the point.
I own a G4 iBook, I recognized it as soon as I saw the picture. It's in my lap as I write this. Everyone who brought up the point that other computer manufactures make white laptops, good for you for thinking outside the box! That's critical thinking! I'm proud of you! Unfortunately, it's not another white laptop; it's an iBook. Was it a mistake on the part on the advertiser? I don't know. Is it a stock photo? Who cares! Bottom line: It's an iBook!
Although, it might be a Sony Vaio. -
