- clak, on 04/10/2008, -31/+12TUAW does okay, but this my rebuttal to this ***** piece of journalism.
Reason #1: Vista runs more software
This is essentially a quantity over quality debate. I have been both a Windows user (10 years) and a Mac user (5 years) and I can tell you that in my experience, programs developed for the Mac are almost always better. In many cases, I would have to buy three shareware programs in Windows to get the same functionality of one product made for the Mac. Now I can feel the Windows fanboys creeping up on me ready to scream out something about AutoCAD and games, but do most people even need AutoCAD? That's a very specialized market. But games, on the other hand, are important, at least to me. Apple has a stopgap measure in Boot Camp. And yes, you can run Windows at native speeds using boot camp (it's just a partitioner, not a virtual machine).
But then that begs the question: if a Mac can run OS X AND Windows AND Linux, wouldn't there thereotically be more apps available for the Mac?
Reason #2: Vista is safer
This is highly debatable because for one thing, none of the laptops at CanSecWest could be broken into remotely. It was only after allowing the hacker, Charlie Miller, to connect his MacBook to the MacBook Air using a crossover cable and directing an user to a site with malicious code, was he able to use his exploit.
I'll be sure to remember NOT to connect my MacBook (if and when I get a Macbook) directly to a hacker's computer in the future. Another thing the Apple haters are failing to acknowledge is the fact that Safari is based on WebKit, which is open source. More than likely Miller used his access to WebKit's source code to find and exploit a security hole, while had this been in the wild from the get-go, more than likely a third party would have discovered the flaw and closed it before it was ever a problem. That's the beauty of open source. Miller actually held back the exploit so that he could win some money and look like a bad ass, which is contrary to what open source is supposed to be about. So forgive me if I don't get all excited about this. This little sensational hack won't change the fact that OS X doesn't have any viruses and probably isn't going to have viruses in the near future. This is no different than when those guys working for SecureWorks claimed to have hacked a MacBook using third party software back in 2006. As far as I know, there still hasn't been an increase in viruses or malware since that time (Of course, those guys admitted to lying about it later).
Wake me up when a hacker discovers how to gain access to my machine without my interaction and install malicious programs on my Mac without my Administration password. When that happens, Mac users might be in trouble, at least for the couple of weeks that it takes for Apple to close the hole.
Reason #3: It's the money, stupid.
What the hell does hardware prices have to do with Vista being a superior operating system? And how much hardware out there is actually "Vista Capable." It seems like you have to have a super computer to run it. There's a reason why XP was given extended availability to run on the Asus Eee. Vista runs horrible on it.
And while we're talking about prices, how come the retail version of Office is still $400. You can't get a retail version of Windows for less than $200. Apple may not offer low end PCs outside of the Mac Mini, but at least their software prices are reasonable. iWork will set you back $79. iLife comes for free with most new purchases.
Reason #4: The Mac is closed; Vista is open.
Closed in relation to what? Developers? Is Microsoft releasing the source code for Vista now or something? The "closed" argument is usually reserved for open source, not hardware. And it's currently easier to develop for OS X than Windows.
Reason #5: Two words -- Steve Jobs
It's a little silly to say that Vista is a superior operating system because of Steve Jobs (huh?), but I'll bite. Maybe the writer ran out of good things he could write about Vista (Software. Check. Security. Check. Money. Check. More hardware. Check. Uh, seriously, what else does Vista have going for it? Aero?).
Anyhoo, I can give you a two word reason why Vista is a ***** OS: Steve BALLMER.- estvir, on 04/10/2008, -11/+17There are so many flaws in your 'rebuttal' I don't know where to begin, but I'll cover 2:
> But then that begs the question: if a Mac can run OS X AND Windows AND Linux, wouldn't there thereotically be more apps available for the Mac?
They're comparing Mac OS, not the Mac hardware.
> I'll be sure to remember NOT to connect my MacBook (if and when I get a Macbook) directly to a hacker's computer in the future.
Mac OS X was eventually exploited by 'tricking' a user into opening a link in Safari. No direct connection was needed and the hacker also went on record saying Vista was more secure and mentioned things like Microsoft's Secure Development Lifecycle.
I'd address the rest but I couldn't really be bothered and it'd be a long post. Basically, you didn't really think out your rebuttal and generally, when you claim something is badly written, to badly write something yourself seems kind of silly and hypocritical.- estvir, on 04/10/2008, -10/+12Oh, and 3 more for good measure:
> When that happens, Mac users might be in trouble, ..
How is 'most' adware and so on installed on Windows? By tricking users. Emails tricking users go back what, a decade? And many of them have been the biggest viruses in history (IIRC). So, unless you can guarantee /every/ Mac user is computer literature and unfailing than there is a security problem.
> And while we're talking about prices, how come the retail version of Office is still $400. You can't get a retail version of Windows for less than $200.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8129 ... - Office 2007 (Home and Student; Retail) for, wait for it, $149.99 (!) and I could possibly find cheaper versions too. I could also probably find Vista for under $200 too. So, lie more, really, it makes you look so much better than ComputerWorld in your oh-so-correct rebuttal of their 'shoddy' piece of journalism.
> What the hell does hardware prices have to do with Vista being a superior operating system? And how much hardware out there is actually "Vista Capable." It seems like you have to have a super computer to run it. There's a reason why XP was given extended availability to run on the Asus Eee. Vista runs horrible on it.
You're [legally] required to buy a Mac to run Mac OS, there are > millions of Vista Capable devices (IIRC, I'd need to find the news story again) and you do not need a super computer to run Vista ( http://arstechnica.com/guides/tweaks/vintagevista. ... -- For example). Also, people have gotten Vista running on an Asus Eee PC and I'd love to see Mac OS X (Not modified) run on an Asus Eee PC fine.
You, TUAW and ComputerWorld all fail miserably but you and TUAW more so since all you had to do was create a rebuttal to a CW article yet you managed to fail and to make it worse, both of you acted all self righteous and so on. - pitbull67, on 04/10/2008, -5/+5Both of ya need to switch to decaf or something. Both of ya lighten up. Sheesh....He likes mac....you like Vista.....it's ok. The great thing is you have choices. Your spending your money. He is spending his. It's all good. Get what ya like. Stop hatin' others who don't travel down the same road you do.
- estvir, on 04/10/2008, -7/+2It has nothing to do with what either of us like (I like Vista, Mac OS, Linux, FreeBSD, etc all for their own reasons). Hell, your reply has nothing to do with what I posted.
- estvir, on 04/10/2008, -10/+12Oh, and 3 more for good measure:
- clak, on 04/10/2008, -9/+3@estvir
The article was comparing Vista to OS X. Boot Camp is a part of OS X, so it is a legitimate comparison. It has nothing to do with the hardware.
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, as far as the security thing goes. There is a picture of the hacker, Charlie Miller, at CanSecWest and he is clearly connected to the MacBook Air that he hacked. You can clearly see it on this web site: http://dvlabs.tippingpoint.com/blog/2008/03/27/day ...
If Digg truncates the link, just paste this link in your browser and remove the space: http://dvlabs.tippingpoint.com/blog/2008/03/27/ day-two-of-cansecwest-pwn-to-own---we-have-our-first-official-winner-with-picture- screwzluse, on 04/10/2008, -1/+6He wasn't saying he wasn't connected directly. He was saying the exploit doesn't require the hacker to be connected directly to the other computer, it was just easier to do that there. I'm not saying it's true or not (I didn't read up on the exploit or anything) but it sounds reasonable to me.
- eclipse007, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4They're connected because he was serving the website that Safari should visit on his own machine, it was more convenient and reasonable to set up a website that way than to use a third party hosting service, and expose a zero day flaw to a third party (and possibly the whole Internet)!
- estvir, on 04/10/2008, -5/+3Besides you being wrong again and not really knowing what you're talking about, what all the other points? I hope you're off your high horse now and in the future won't insult others if your comments yourself are as factually/logically wrong as the person who your 'rebuttal' is aimed at.
Oh, and I have "absolutely no idea"? Haha, how is it, being wrong again. Embarrassing? - estvir, on 04/10/2008, -4/+4"Macaulay pwned the Mac by sending it an e-mail that directed a user to a malicious site. Upon visiting the site, the user—a CanSecWest organizer perched on the machine to protect it from physical assault—was infected with malware, without clicking on anything within the site."

YOU have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Don't insult my intelligence by your moronic replies, you'd be more welcome in the comment section on YouTube or on an Apple fanboy sites.
- passedoutghost, on 04/10/2008, -1/+3"But then that begs the question: if a Mac can run OS X AND Windows AND Linux, wouldn't there thereotically be more apps available for the Mac?" YOUR DOING IT WRONG ('begging the question' is not used in that context)
- estvir, on 04/10/2008, -4/+3And the actual logic behind that comment of his is downright retarded.
- shawnz, on 04/10/2008, -2/+4"1. Vista runs more software"
"This is unequivocally true ..."
"3. It's the money, stupid"
"Granted, we Mac users pay a premium ..."
"4. The Mac is closed; Vista is open"
"Again, this is true ..." - Seidoger, on 04/10/2008, -2/+2Nice! Vista runs more software, because you know I want to own and run more software than any other human has owned and ran before.
- BlackCow, on 04/10/2008, -1/+2"You don't end up saving any more building your own dream system than if you had it configured some place else."
Completely 100% wrong, newegg is proof of that.
"I have come around to enjoying not building my own machine from scratch. Don't get me wrong, for certain projects it is a TON of fun"
So basically you like building computers but now that you use apple you don't like it because Steve Jobs says so. I don't think there is ANY way to argue that apple is right in not allowing people to build their own.
- estvir, on 04/10/2008, -11/+17There are so many flaws in your 'rebuttal' I don't know where to begin, but I'll cover 2:

Why can't we all just get along?- pitbull67, on 04/10/2008, -1/+17I've never understood the mac vs windows thing (now mac vs windows vs Linux). I use all three. Actively. I have machines set up to do different tasks and they have different strengths. Now I will admit my main desktop is an iMac and my main laptop is a macbook pro.....but that is because on those machines I DO have all three with me.
This argument over which is better is kinda silly. They all have positive points. I am a life long windows guy. I actively use multiple distros of Linux. I am new to the mac and happen to think it is a great computer. Cost is irrelevant to use. I love my mac. I love using ubuntu on my old Sony laptop....it really zips in this environment. (7 year old Sony with 512m of ram). I have a monster PC with vista ultimate running on it....and doing so relatively well.
To pick one platform and say that is the only one for you......totally limits your options. I have learned this through experience. Use them all. You get the best of ALL worlds.- diblasio, on 04/10/2008, -1/+3I totally agree. I use all three as well. Everyone is so busy pointing out the strengths of their favorite OS that they forget that after a while ALL of them are annoying. When I get tired of one, I go to the other. No big deal.
- phunlee, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4me, too. on the usage. I barely use Linux, but am between mac and pc all day long. I do lean to Mac as a favorite, tho. It's like dipping into a perfectly temperatured hot tub, after taking a cold shower all day long with Windows. Anyone else? Just me? That's okay.
- topgigmedia, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6The argument is stupid... It is really like saying one car manufacturer's model is better than another of comparable features, etc. It is really all matter of preference. That said, I prefer OS X to Vista, but I do not begrudge someone who prefers the ladder.
- jtbandes, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5I prefer the ladder. It's really handy when you need to climb something.
- ScottyDelicious, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3;)
- topgigmedia, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4eeek! I meant latter - it was late ;)
- jtbandes, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5I prefer the ladder. It's really handy when you need to climb something.
- Urkel, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2Actually, most of us could (and do) get along. Despite all the sensationalism and comments based on picking sides, a very large majority of both PC and Mac users respect each others OS choices or could care less what other people do. The problem is that these "regular" people don't bother talking about unimportant things like this which results in the biggest assholes having the loudest voices.
- dariusperkins, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2History is littered with kids (and adults for that matter) arguing over the relative merits/foibles of their systems (atari st/amiga, SNES/Megadrive, ad nauseum).
Their underlying worry is that they have an inferior system and have to denounce the other to vindicate their choice.
Either that or they're worried about their tiny penises.
- pitbull67, on 04/10/2008, -1/+17I've never understood the mac vs windows thing (now mac vs windows vs Linux). I use all three. Actively. - quoigonfishin, on 04/10/2008, -18/+5I use a MacBook Pro for my photography business. This past Sunday the display stopped working so on Monday I took it into the Apple Store genius bar. After a few tests it was determined that the logic board (a.k.a. motherboard) was bad and needed to be replaced. (It's still under warranty , thank goodness!) I left my laptop at the Apple store at 3:00PM on Monday. On Tuesday around 3:30PM I called Apple Care to find out the status of my repair. THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED! In fact, if DHL hadn't screwed up the overnight shipping I'd be typing this post on it right now. I'm expecting to receive it tomorrow. I could have bought a PC and maybe (then again maybe not) saved a few dollars on a comparable machine but who else would have turned around a logic board repair in less than 24 hours? That just rocks!
- DeathJux, on 04/10/2008, -3/+18This has nothing to do with OS X vs. Vista.
- quoigonfishin, on 04/10/2008, -6/+2Actually I think it does.
This was in response to his third point "It's the money, stupid." I should have been more specific in my comment. My point is that a Vista PC may cost less but if you use your machine for business being without it costs far more than the few dollars you would save up front.
I hope this helps to clarify.- actionscripted, on 04/10/2008, -2/+3If you use your machines for business, you'll have an easier and cheaper time hiring a Windows admin than a Mac admin (or "Genius" as it may be).
- quoigonfishin, on 04/10/2008, -6/+2Actually I think it does.
- i70CuDa, on 04/10/2008, -2/+8then one time, my dell got repaired.
- MurphyMac, on 04/10/2008, -3/+1The Genius Bar is kind of related. Because the overall experience of owning a Mac is way better if you have convenient access to a Genius Bar. And there's nothing like it in the PC world. That said, CuDa made me laugh.
http://murphymac.com/the-genius-bar/ - mntbikeracer1, on 04/10/2008, -1/+4That's nice, and my Thinkpad has been repaired in just as timely a manner in the past. This has nothing to do with software.

- jaisin, on 04/10/2008, -7/+13I haven't used Vista at all extensively so I can't comment on it, but I do use OS X and XP. I like both operating systems, but I think OS X is more polished. What I mean by polished is hard to explain, but I didn't really understand it until I used both OSs side by side for 6 months. At the start, I preferred Windows because it was what I was used to; I barely touched the Mac that I bought. Now I know how to get things done on both operating systems, and I think OS X is a better choice for me. I only boot into XP for gaming, but most of the stuff I do is on the internet anyway so the OS doesn't matter that much.
- actionscripted, on 04/10/2008, -2/+13That polished feeling you can't clearly define is a superior implementation of usability and design conventions. Fitt's law being one of the best examples.
- kiddailey, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Another example is screen redraw. In every version of Windows that has ever existed, there's always been this annoying redraw that happens. Desktop icons flash when you close windows, reveal the desktop or minimize stuff, window borders and contents draw on step-by-step, etc. As your computer gets busier, it becomes more pronounced. Even the "Expose" in Vista feels unpolished in this respect.
Compare this to OS X where objects are apparently rendered "out of view" so you don't see redraw and objects on screen have smooth transitions (shrinking to the dock, expose, etc). When I click the minimize in Firefox on OS X, my desktop icons don't flicker.
- DeathJux, on 04/10/2008, -9/+54God DAMN it, I hate all this stupid ***** rivalry between OSes! Guess what, they both work! What you prefer depends on what your purpose is!

- dmallymally, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2so true, i own a mac and a ps3, but just because i own those, doesn't mean i think the 360 and pc's suck. it's a matter of personal preference, i just like the interface of the mac better than windows, and it was pretty much a toss up between the 360 and ps3 when i went to buy.
- actionscripted, on 04/10/2008, -7/+2When you say "they both work", you mean they all work, right? It's not just Vista versus OS X.
- DeathJux, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3The article pits Vista against OS X, hence the use of "both," but obviously there's a myriad of OSes out there, all suited to different people and purposes. Windows and OS X just happen to dominate the desktop/personal computer market.

- RamezaniK, on 04/10/2008, -5/+11Just 1 reason why Gralla's article is pure *****: Every single argument is completely unsupported and circumstantial at best. I don't care which OS is actually better, but the only things that article shows are poor writing skills, lack of rhetoric and logic, and skin-deep Vista-fanboyism.
- JeffH, on 04/10/2008, -1/+6You're right, it was a crappy article and this counter-article is just as bad.
Both of them don't cite anything, base everything on assumption and opinion, and have extremely childish writing tones. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 04/10/2008, -3/+5MacOS sucks because it's a poor gaming platform, the hardware is apple only, and everything seems to be sold at a premium, and people who are vocal about using the platform think it's the best choice for all situations.
Vista sucks because you can't run it on older computers. The drivers have been slow to be upgraded. Companies like creative have used it as an excuse to drop support for older hardware, where the XP drivers still work in Vista, and you can steal driver files from the installer and install using Windows directly.
Linux Sucks because the damn thing wont install stuff easily without having to use console, compile, figure out wine, buy cedega, or discover repositories that I don't have.
Bootcamp sucks because I'd have to turn off bittorrent and my IM etc.
VM's are just as useful on any platform.
There I pissed everyone off. I gave everyone a reason to not like this comment. - erikerikerik, on 04/10/2008, -1/+1a prime suspect!!! both articles read as a long list of fallacies. Just poor argument on both sides.

um that's all i got...some one else pick up- Shadowgamers, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1The open source and filesystem of Linux, the Plug-n-Play and market share of Windows and the GUI and various other features of Mac.
:V- Pake, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1You can get the OSX GUI look on Linux and there aren't really any features that Linux or Windows can't get. Dual booting Windows and Linux seems to me the best option still.
- Boondoggle, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1GUI "look" does not equal GUI. the look is the least important part of it.

- Shadowgamers, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2I liked the time when I used to be able to google about an OS without finding a million and a half blogs on the subject of which one is best :V
- drewX2, on 04/10/2008, -3/+2Why is it if people disagree with articles relating to Apple they have to be fanboys? What about it being vice versa? Why cant it just be people disagreeing. There is no reason to label people.
I suppose its easier to hate on a minority when you outnumber them eh? Sounds like real life.- erikerikerik, on 04/10/2008, -2/+1STFU fan boy!!!
I kid! I kid.- drewX2, on 04/10/2008, -0/+0If you wanna get technically I probably use Linux more then anything else. If its one thing I have learned today is that most people around today did not get smacked enough as a child. Spoiled kids growing up to make fools of themselves by posting and saying foolish comments instead of being mature. Sadly more than 50% of diggers fall into this category.
- erikerikerik, on 04/10/2008, -2/+1STFU fan boy!!!
- donkeydrop, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3All five reasons are true, so bury as lame flamebait but not for inaccuracy.
- Pake, on 04/10/2008, -1/+1If it wasn't for the applications I use that are for the most part Windows only, the question I'd have to ask is: Why run OSX when I could run Linux? It's free, safer, faster, open source, etc. I know this will piss off Apple lovers, but quite honestly the only reason to run OSX is to be different and think you're cool or just a fanboy. If you seriously want functionality or security, you'd be better off with Windows or Linux respectively.
- drewX2, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2I have used all three operating systems extensively in the last 10 years and currently still do.
Have you?
Each operating system has its pros and cons. All my servers are Linux except for one which is a windows server. I use windows for troubleshooting with clients and I use OS X myself for everything. The problem is 9 out of 10 people are ignorant because they have never tried OS X. - Boondoggle, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1yeah pake you're sounding like someone who has made a half-hearted attempt with OS X at best. OS X has a lot to offer that is not available in any of the several current linux distros that I'm running right now. Linux is great, and even has a few features I wish OS X had, but for majority of task that the majority of users want to do effectively OS X is the better choice. Using both XP and Vista at work daily for years as an IT professional has made me acutely aware of the strengths and weaknesses of that platform. At home I use OS X for my main desktops.

- mehan, on 04/10/2008, -4/+3taking OS advice from a self-described apple "fangirl"?
***** no. - kiwimonk, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2and all i wanted was a milkshake :/
who cares. - erikerikerik, on 04/10/2008, -2/+2Yesh, what a whinny little bitch.
I don't care WTF I'm using, if it gets the job done then its the right tool for me. - Stryder81, on 04/10/2008, -2/+1lol That kid Chris Pirillo saw this and bugged out on it. I came across this today...

- Stryder81, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1lmao I had no idea, I came across that video when lookin at some mac video

- woofers07, on 04/10/2008, -1/+3I'm getting pretty sick of this OS debate. No one is gonna convince the other to switch, why don't we start debating our religious beliefs while we're at it? I'm burying any Mac, Unix, or Windows fanboy rhetoric stories from now on.
- xgambetx, on 04/10/2008, -4/+2well vista is a completely new OS while leopard is just and extension really
- erikerikerik, on 04/10/2008, -2/+4ya got those backwards. =X
but yeah OSx was allowed a true "reboot" while Vista had to pander to the corp crowd. - xgambetx, on 04/10/2008, -4/+1backwards?
i think not- WoollyMittens, on 04/10/2008, -1/+2LOL... it's so childish to bury someone in your own thread.
- xgambetx, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1hmm??? never did i bury someone in my own post
wow douche

- Me1000, on 04/10/2008, -1/+1If all you look at is then UI then you are correct, but when you actually look at the core os there are loads of differences.
Leopard was called a developer upgrade before it came out.
- erikerikerik, on 04/10/2008, -2/+4ya got those backwards. =X

I hope you lose your job. For one, you knew that this would spur hits and traffic with it's title, but all you did was present false if not idiotic points. Do a little research... nigh a mention of Bootcamp... (Preston Gralla - "What's that?").
Computerworld should be ashamed of this piece of trash. I utilize both Windows (XP and Vista) and OS X. The general consensus in the tech world is that both have their place and are not segregating the market, just finding consumer who are more apt to choose their hardware/software on the basis of feature set, pricing, aesthetics, etc...
Mr. Gralla lack of insight and valid info on the topic leaves questions of why he is affiliated with Computerworld, an established part of the tech community... - xgambetx, on 04/10/2008, -2/+2wow this site is stupid
"a $600 PC is fine -- but if you want to keep something around for a while, the price point is going to be almost exactly the same Windows or Mac."
a worthless comment
"You don't end up saving any more building your own dream system than if you had it configured some place else."
wow.... you easily save a couple hundred just by doing this....- WoollyMittens, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Picking components saves you from buying what Dell thought was a good deal for them. It's much more efficient to have a tailor-made pc for yourself, but it's not for lazy people I suppose. Dell has underpaid uneducated chinese people putting pc's together: It's not that hard.
- WoollyMittens, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3This is as retarded as xbox versus playstation. Guess what? The rabid fanboys all trying to vindicate their purchase. People who have both systems never bitch in this kind of tribal warfar, while they are the only ones who can make an unbiased judgement.
I use both OSX and Windows XP. They both have strong points. They both have weak points. Make the best of both. - 0xC0FF33, on 04/10/2008, -2/+2I know, you'll hate me, but I love vista.... I use them all - OSX, Linux, BSD, Plan 9, Windows, Old MacOS! Every OS has its pro's and con's, but I really disagree the article! It's not the topic itself - its the arguments Mr. Gralla took.... he has no idea what he is writing....
- agimat, on 04/10/2008, -2/+1[ I want to make it clear that I'm not coming at this from the typical rabid Mac-fangirl stance. ]
Riiight.
