WSJ's Walt Mossberg Reviews iPhone 3G
online.wsj.com — Smart-phone shoppers who have been waiting for a cheaper iPhone that runs on faster cell networks might want to take the plunge on the iconic device's latest iteration, but service costs have risen and battery life has dropped.

- phore, on 07/09/2008, -3/+8A definite improvement but I think I'm going to stick with my first gen iphone. 3g and gps aren't too important to me but the speaker upgrade and having a REAL headphone jack are really nice and could tempt me into upgrading.
- digitaldivinci, on 07/10/2008, -3/+3Really..that's worth a minimum of $200 and an extra $10 a month?
I could see if you wanted to upgrade your capacity because you bought an 8 and getting the new 16gb, makes sense. I could see if you really wanted the speed upgrade. Your driving reasons are a flush jack and a speaker upgrade? Really?- HolyChimp, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3I made a profit on upgrading... Sold my 1st gen on ebay unlocked for £200, now I just gotta grab the new one for £160* on Friday
*and resetting my contract to 18 months, but I had 12 months left on it anyway.

- pastasauce, on 07/10/2008, -3/+3Get a knife and trim plastic/rubber off the headphone jack until it fits. I just saved you a lot of money.

- dmourati, on 07/09/2008, -7/+1We're banking that 3G iPhone users will want ad-supported mobile video content.
http://vsnax.com- HolyChimp, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Why, when YouTube offers it without ads?
- EtherGnat, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1It all depends on the content. There are plenty of things I want to see enough to watch some brief ads, although I doubt that site will have anything compelling.
- dmourati, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Check it out and find out for yourself.

- branndon, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5Pretty much what we have heard for the last month. Faster internet, bad battery, and gps.
- pmc64, on 07/09/2008, -5/+6do we need 2 of these on the front page?
- kajoob, on 07/10/2008, -2/+1Of course - how else do you expect MrBabyMan to justify his existence on this planet?

- Pake, on 07/09/2008, -0/+10Same damn phone with 3G and apparently we need to read every article telling us the same damn thing... that it's the same damn phone with 3G.
- erhanaltay, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2I actually found the review useful, I was considering getting an iPhone now that its cheaper & been through one generation (let the early adopters be the free beta testers) but for me the most important aspect for a phone is battery life so I guess I'll wait another generation before plunging into the 'smart phone' crowd.
- EtherGnat, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1"now that its cheaper..." if you consider saving $200 up front and paying $360 more for the service over two years cheaper. Even if you compare the 8GB to the 8GB 3G it's still $60 more over the terms of the contract. It's probably worth the extra money, but it's not cheaper.
- teknishn, on 07/09/2008, -0/+7You know what gets me. Ever since iPhone 1.0 came out ppl were screaming bloody murder over no 3G support. Apple said we couldn't do 3G because of what the current chipsets did to battery consumption.
Fast forward to today and we have better 3G chipsets, but still chew up the battery more than 2.5G..... so now its time to complain about the battery?
I use my iPhone 1.0 quite a bit and when I get home I still have 50-75% of my battery left on average. On crazier days I may have 25-50% left. So 3G talk time is 'up to' 5hrs vs Edge 'up to' 8hrs. I guess I have to ask... who needs more than 4-5 hours of continuous talk time in a given day? And if you do and its that important, there is a setting to turn off 3G and talk on Edge.
Oh well, I guess its just annoying that we finally get what we asked for, its common knowledge that 3G comes at a price in terms of power consumption, and now there is the beginnings of whining about the battery.- smashingmonkey, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2It's not that difficult to grasp... it wouldn't be a problem if they just let you get to the battery. Lots of us have multiple batteries for our phones for those heavy use days. Not an option on the new iPhone.
- teknishn, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2Yeah, that is true. While I don't anticipate it being a problem for me, I can see it really biting some folks. Expect to see a giant sales spike in car chargers.
- williambeutler, on 07/10/2008, -1/+150-75% after using it "quite a bit" during the daytime? That isn't my experience. If I'm listening to music most of the day and use the browser when I walk to lunch or the post office, I'm certainly below 50% by the time I get home. On heavy usage days, I have to ration my usage -- or I did before I brought my spare USB cord in to the office.
- kuppoppo, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3Then you might need to think about your insane addiction to electronic devices.

- yourpalOZ, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2Lets all pass on this one till they lower the monthly cost to reasonable.
My old one does more than I need and Damn its hard to read anyway. I bring the EEE Asus for real browsing - Skidmark66, on 07/10/2008, -3/+2mossberg reminds me of a corpse, a corpse with depression, i can't believe people listen to that zombie . .

- zedebsky, on 07/10/2008, -2/+2How about the fact that this phone should have been 3G from the beginning?! They were too concerned about it sucking too hard on the tiny battery they insist the device has to have to maintain it's "stylish" form. So you paid several hundred for the first gen and then a couple hundred more for the second and by the time you add it all up you could have had a 3G phone from the beginning with more features. Once again, form over function from your friends in Cupertino.
- teknishn, on 07/10/2008, -1/+0Ive owned everything from RAZR to Palms to Blackberrys and I found the iPhone battery to pretty much destroy them all. Especially considering the size and resolution of the active touch screen, ipod, web, email functionality. iPhone has done better than all those other devices that don't get nearly the same sort of use we have become accustomed to on our iPhones. The 3G rig still matches or usually beats other smaller screened 3G phones that don't even pack nearly as much tech and functionality.
I agree a removable battery would be nice though. Its not something that I would need, but I know others that probably would because of the 3G power drain.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck- teknishn, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1+100 That is the most fully gay thing I have heard. So now we have the ability for personal or business but not both.
- PosedMagnet, on 07/10/2008, -2/+0So... don't use MS. Do people even still use exchange?
- maxsunset, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2I'm sort of surprised no one has mentioned how "scratchable" the new shiny black plastic is on the 3G. It seems it was the topic-de-jour with the first ipod nano, and apple went to great lengths to have a neigh un-scratchable device with the first iphone, and yet know one seems to care now...
- TimmyGUNZ, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Who cares? I think most people keep it in a case anyway, don't they?
- teknishn, on 07/10/2008, -2/+0I hate cases. I tried 2 different top of the line cases on my iphone and hated them with unbridled passion.
I guess its too early to tell on this new rig. Though I will pony up for and use the dock now so it doesn't get scratched laying down while charging. The thing I hated about aluminum is the denting. I still have my original launch phone from last year and the thing is riddled with dents in the back of it at this point.

- solid12345, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Am I the only one who doesn't care if my phone gets scratched? I mean nobody is going to come up to me at a restaurant or bar and laugh at me for having a scuffed up Iphone.
- Taiyaki, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2More resale value if its in good condition.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Who cares? I think most people keep it in a case anyway, don't they?
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1I didn't forget about that. It's something I absolutely love about my iPhone and hate about my iPod. The back just looks so bad on iPods but the iPhone is basically unchanged (unless you scratch it pretty good, which I did, but that's fine because it was my fault). It's the first thing I thought about when they announced a plastic back.
And no, not everyone uses a case, I think cases are the worst idea ever (plus they're such money grabs). They charge you to make your phone bigger and ugly. One thing I like about the phone is that it's so thin (thinner than a RAZR even). - PosedMagnet, on 07/10/2008, -1/+0Battery life is actually longer...
- hit9ent, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I wish steve jobs was my dad.
